I typically try to avoid jumping into the deep end of the political pool on Tuesday evenings, but this one requires some discussion. Not quite Flaming Skull worthy. Another activist judge ruling. Good evening clever and busy brained people. Thank you for stopping by on Tuesday, March 32nd for the April Fool's ONT edition. April 1st - where we all get to lie a bit for a joke (good or bad...don't make me no nevermind). Here is a touching tribute to the Boston Red Sox fans played on the big screen at Petco Park, in San Diego. What is the best April Fools prank you have played or have been the victim of? My staff snuck the keys of my truck off my desk and parked it in a high traffic area. They wrote on the windshield in white shoe polish: "For Sale - $1500" and added my mobile number.
Baseball has cranked back up and there will be the annual viewing of the Sandlot. Oh yes, there will be quotes.

Election updates from 8:50pm EST. Wisconsin Supreme Court. Heavy turnout. Ballot shortages in blue Milwaukee. The old - anyone in line by 8pm local time would be able to vote - has been rolled out. There will be legal challenges. Early numbers favor the Susan Crawford, the choice of the Democrat Party. 57.3% to 42.7% for Brad Schimel. About 40% reporting. If Crawford wins, which appears extremely likely, we will see very predictable headlines tomorrow. Florida. House seats formerly occupied by Matt Gaetz and Glen Waltz. GOP projected wins for both seats. Jimmy Patronis with 57% - 95% reporting. Randy Fine with 56.7% - 95% reporting. We should be running up the score while we can. The left never quits.
Below is a very brief Q1 Report. It's been about 70 days since Trump took office. We can have a bit of ONT fun with all the winning. Summary - ONT Style Prior to January 20, 2025: Living in a country with an administration and alphabet agencies focused on graft. State weakness and no border control. Lawlessness, highly partisan enforcement of federal laws (targeting conservatives and Christians) - add in some Identity Politics / DEI, inflation, energy dependence, and a constant stream of pretentious media gaslighting and social media content. Credentialed people acting like they were first-round draft picks while riding the money train of the system. They absolutely sucked at leadership and Americans told them so - with their votes. Where we are today: America first. We have transitioned in about 70 days to the early stages of the grown-up version of leadership and governing for the betterment of the United States and its citizens. January 6th pardons. Illegal border crossings have slowed to a drip, rounding up the criminals-invaders, deportations, strengthening the military and its leadership, protection of the US Dollar, getting men out of women's sports, USAID and their Marxist agenda has been gutted, DEI / CRT has a finger in their eye to the second knuckle, the Education Department is getting squeezed, progress being made with smoking out the deep state actors, emission rules rolled back, and withdrawal (again) from the Paris Agreement. And egg prices falling/normalizing! Trump has a vision, talented people around him, and the balls to make things happen. Sprinkling of Accomplishments and Progress Border: Invoked the Alien Enemies Act of 1798. Deporting Criminals. Deporting pro-Hamas students and professors from college campuses. Illegal border crossings cut to very low levels. Drug cartels designated as foreign terrorist organizations. Fun Stuff: Liberals Crying. Further eroding the reach and effectiveness of the legacy media. Released JFK records. Revocation of secret service details. Revocation of security clearances. Sampling of In Progress Judiciary: Strange, I have no recollection of voting for any of these judges. The activist judiciary branch must be reined in. SCOTUS inaction is getting tiresome. Law Enforcement: Would like to see the DOJ go on offense a lot more. The FBI has a lot of house cleaning to do. When Epstein files? Doge: Off to a great start. Much work to be completed. Too many things to list! College: This is going to be a long march. A Look to the Future? Taxes: No taxes on: Tips, overtime pay, or Social Security. Making the Trump tax cuts permanent. Cut the corporate tax rate. Trump and Vance are on pace to be the most impactful president and vice president in my lifetime.
Touring an old missile site during daylight hours would be kind of cool. Atlas E, specifically. Spartan website design but it has an excellent aggregation of some amazing resources (sounds familiar) for the Atlas E missiles.
Following is a series of documents pertaining to the Atlas E version of the SM-65 missile system. There are different sections including news articles, diagrams, construction, operational and historical documents, etc. This page has sub-sections for the three operational Atlas E ICBM squadrons with information specific to that squadron.
The 82-foot-tall missile had a speed reaching nearly 16,000 miles per hour. A self-contained, automatic inertial guidance system was accurate to within one-and-one-half miles. It was a liquid-fueled missile that delivered a nuclear warhead more than 100 times more powerful than the atomic bomb dropped at Nagasaki in 1945.
The liquid fuel, a mixture of liquid oxygen and kerosene, which propelled both the Atlas E and Titan missiles, was a major problem. It required that the missile be stored empty and fueled for flight.
As the song goes, a fine girl.

Came up with the idea to prank my Army roommate, we were living in spiffy new “barracks” that shared a common kitchen and bath and individual rooms. We each had phones, too. Pretty swank for Army dogs. We’d play hours against each other on Descent as well. Anyway, I came up with a “Robocall” scenario. "The liquid fuel, a mixture of liquid oxygen and kerosene, which propelled both the Atlas E and Titan missiles, was a major problem. It required that the missile be stored empty and fueled for flight."
The Titan I used the same propellants as the Atlas. Titan I had a very short operational life. The Titan II was a major redesign that used on-board storable hypergolic propellants instead of liquid oxygen and kerosene. Titan II was a success. Titan II ICBMs were on SAC operational alert from 1963 to 1987. Titan IIs were the launch boosters for all of the NASA Gemini missions to Earth orbit. One April 1st, he cut a wooden board out, just the size of the brownie pyrex, with one piece missing. Iced it. My younger brother was the first up... Dad, these brownies are a little hard. A lot of the early missiles had paper thin skins, the strength was achieved by virtue of being filled with fuel. Something like 2% of the total weight was actual metal, usually Inconel-X ; the rest was propellant.
I found a 700+ page .pdf on the Mercury program that goes through NACA and NASA and all the thinking that went into the early rocket development. The Army had their Nazi team installed down at Huntsville, the Air Force had Dynasoar, and lots of missile programs, the Ames research team, another at Langley, and the Soviets were kicking our ass. Posted by: Common Tater at April 01, 2025 10:35 PM (uG1+h) Propellant tanks of that design had to be constantly pressurized for structural stability. Those tanks were similar to current beer and soda cans. When pressurized they resist buckling and sagging. When unpressurized they are flimsy shells that can withstand very little force from any direction. It must have been an operational nightmare keeping Atlas tanks constantly pressurized during final missile assembly, acceptance testing, transport, storage, and tanking with propellant. Interestingly one of the big problems they had, was termed the “re-entry barrier” in the same way they termed the “sound barrier”.
They had a lot of trouble keeping warheads from burning up and being destroyed due to the tremendous friction heat build up of the earth’s atmosphere. Eventually they settled on a blunt shape, and ablative material to shed heat and keeping things nice and cool, so warheads, instrumentation, and later Astronauts, wouldn’t burn up. Maxime Faget was kind of the brainchild for that, smart guy. Posted by: Common Tater at April 01, 2025 10:55 PM (uG1+h) 164

Posted by: MkY at April 01, 2025 10:43 PM (cPGH3) OKC bombing was ANFO: ammonium nitrate (a crystalline solid) and fuel oil, commonly used as a commercial explosive in mining. NH4NO3 Anhydrous ammonia is NH3, a building block for lots of chemistry, and used as commercial fertilizer, too. NH4+ is the ammonium ion. When NH3 reacts with something, like water or acid, it snags a proton from the anion, and becomes NH4+. E.G.: NH3 + H2O = NH4OH, ammonium hydroxide, found under nearly every kitchen sink. Anhydrous was the fuel for the Oklahoma Federal Building bombs. Screwed up a whole lotta farm purchases.
Also created a spectacular Boom in the Texas town of West. Meth cooks kept sneaking in to the West Fertilizer Company to steal NH3; apparently didn't turn off the taps. > The neighbor said he believes they had a little oxidizer spill while transporting the missile. (Probably nitrogen tetroxide.)
Nitrogen tetroxide is nasty stuff, but it isn't the kind of thing that hangs around for years and years. Effective oxidizers (especially in a rocket context) are reactive as hell, and they'll oxidize just about anything they touch, generally breaking down in the process. Nitrogen tetroxide, though colorless itself, exists in equilibrium with nitrous oxide, which is brownish/reddish/orangish, making it easy to spot leaks. I remember reading a story from a NASA dude who was visiting one of the Chinese space facilities, many years back. He'd pretty much shit his pants every time he looked up at the current rocket on the pad and saw the tell-tale orange plume coming out. This was a near-daily occurence, the way he told it. Effective oxidizers (especially in a rocket context) are reactive as hell, and they'll oxidize just about anything they touch, generally breaking down in the process.

I remembered some funny quotes from somebody about rocket fuels. It was John Drury Clark: "Now it is clear that anyone working with rocket fuels is outstandingly mad. I don’t mean garden-variety crazy or a merely raving lunatic. I mean a record-shattering exponent of far-out insanity." "It is, of course, extremely toxic, but that’s the least of the problem. It is hypergolic with every known fuel, and so rapidly hypergolic that no ignition delay has ever been measured. It is also hypergolic with such things as cloth, wood, and test engineers, not to mention asbestos, sand, and water-with which it reacts explosively. It can be kept in some of the ordinary structural metals-steel, copper, aluminum, etc.-because of the formation of a thin film of insoluble metal fluoride which protects the bulk of the metal, just as the invisible coat of oxide on aluminum keeps it from burning up in the atmosphere. If, however, this coat is melted or scrubbed off, and has no chance to reform, the operator is confronted with the problem of coping with a metal-fluorine fire. For dealing with this situation, I have always recommended a good pair of running shoes." Posted by: publius, Rascally Mr. Miley (w6EFb) at April 01, 2025 11:50 PM (w6EFb) 289

The United States Agency for International Development (USAID) has long portrayed itself as America’s humanitarian aid organization, delivering assistance to developing nations.
With an annual budget of nearly $40 billion and operations in over 100 countries, it represents one of the largest foreign aid institutions in the world. But recent disclosures reveal its true nature as something far more systematic: an architect of global consciousness. ... The ultimate battle isn’t just for truth – it’s for the human spirit itself. A system that can engineer perception can engineer submission. _zerohedge Posted by: Braenyard - some Absent Friends are more equal than others _ at April 02, 2025 12:34 AM (4GPKZ) 375

You can read the story of Strom's filibuster. To pee, he he rigged a contraption with bag or bottle in his pants. An external catheter type thing. He even planned for a #2. He set up a shittin' bucket. He couldn't leave the floor, so he had instruction for aides to fetch the shittin' bucket from a cloakroom. They were to hold some blankets to cover him while he took a dump on the floor of the Senate. He didn't have to make use of that, thankfully. Well, I am getting tired. Finished my mudding and sanding on a section of wall, after priming it yesterday. Priming discloses a lot of fuckups in the original mud and tape job. Hung a coat of finish paint on it. Looking at the dried paint, I can see some broad shallow depressions where the joints simply didn't get enough mud to compensate for the thin edges on the panels. Someone else can fix it, if they care. Not me.
I have about eleven feet of wall left to do in this room. Three panels, two joints to tape and mud. Then paint that, and move on to trim. I will have this room finished before I make the trek back North. Posted by: Alberta Oil Peon at April 02, 2025 01:03 AM (8zz6B) 395
Back in 2011, the Universities of Manchester and York teamed up with the London School of Economics and Political Science to conduct the "Great British Class Survey." I personally don't endorse their findings, but their study produced a word that immediately became a commonplace among the Davos crowd, and it seems to be spreading - Precariat.
It's a combination of "precarious" and "proletariat" that is used to describe those at the bottom of the UK social structure, whose lives are made miserable by the absence of predictability and security, leading to material and psychological harm. Friendly Reminder: If China invades Taiwan the stock market gets cut in half. Apple, Nvidia, all of it. Conflict/trade issues would cause a global recession on top of it. It would make tariffs and Ukraine look like nothing. Immediate global disaster. Still the ultimate risk. --- I don't think so. They are building foundries over here, American companies are building foundries too. Besides it's doubtful that China can just take over Taiwan. Posted by: schizoid at April 02, 2025 01:11 AM (ppQY2) Problem is the representative system was conceived at a time when candidates rode on horseback around their district to campaign and meet their voters. Towns were fairly small, and most of the population was rural. Now the cities have become large, and rural areas are relatively depopulated. Perhaps it's time to get away from strictly geographic representation, and start to apply "affinitive" representation. Say a State has 50 reps. make half of them tied to districts as before. Make the other half tied to "affinity groups" (like the pop breakdowns used in polling, for example). These would "at large" reps. If you had a rep for "white, college-educated", any voter in the State, could vote for that candidate, as long as they fit the descriptor. Not sure if this could be made to work. Just a random thought. Posted by: Alberta Oil Peon at April 02, 2025 01:33 AM (8zz6B) Posted by: Alberta Oil Peon at April 02, 2025 01:35 AM (8zz6B) 424

Arguably denying someone the right to vote for a candidate based on their race is "abridging" their right to vote. It doesn't seem strange but probably somewhat unusual . My mother stayed in touch with her ex and he was a professor where I went to college. Posted by: FenelonSpoke at April 02, 2025 02:24 AM (aVyep) 455
Goodnight, Fen.
JQ, it is great that you and XW get along. I don't think it's weird. If it helps your hubby that is good. Posted by: ScaryMary at April 02, 2025 02:24 AM (dQoNW) 456
'Night, Fen!
ScaryMary-- it's kind of funny sometimes, to see the look on hubby's face when XW & I have a friendly chat! LOL Posted by: JQ at April 02, 2025 02:30 AM (rdVOm) 457
JQ, I am biased. My hubby's folks had a drama-filled divorce when he was young. He didn't have all of his loved ones at graduation, or our wedding, because of hard feelings. So, I think is really good that you and XW get along now.

DH stopped to see Piper at the PetER on his way home. She still isn't up to eating, but she was stoned out of her little mind. I wouldn't eat anything if I was that out of it either. Until she eats, and doesn't die from it, she remains at the ER. Poor baby. But DH is her person, and she liked the visit, as much of it as she could comprehend in her drugged out state.
I miss my baby Piper and want her home, but not until she can eat, certainly. Maybe tomorrow. Ruby walked circles around here waiting for DH and Piper to come home. She is still a bit restless, but I think she's exhausted now. The bond with littermates is remarkable. Aw, that sucks, ScaryMary!
From what I've been told... Hubby & XW also had a very drama-filled divorce. (I had nothing to do with it, btw) Hubs & I started dating several years afterward. We attended son's HS graduation with XW and her husband. It was awkward then, but we all behaved ourselves to honor the young man! Posted by: JQ at April 02, 2025 02:43 AM (rdVOm) 462

It was actually sort of hilarious, considering how much work he went to for a fairly short duration of burn. Winter in Alaska does weird things to people, for certain. JQ, I think it is great that you and XW get along, makes life so much better for all of you. I am glad that you had a good day today. It made everything right in my world when hubs and I had a good day. There were times when the staff would say, wow, he remembers you, and I went home very happy.

Well, just learned why there weren't any pics or videos from the Fram2 yet. There are now, see SpaceX X feed. The entire crew, all four of 'em, got motion/space/zero g sickness. They were puking about all day. They're good now. One of them said he would think the nausea was gone, then try to sip a little water, and boom, he'd be puking again. Night Braenyard.
tcn, I really hope that you get to Texas in October. JQ, someday you need to get there too, it is a healing place. I don't have to get up early, but I have a long afternoon in store. I do not want to top off my drink again. I am going to bed. Good night, Horde. Posted by: Debby Doberman Schultz at April 02, 2025 03:04 AM (0nHVk) 469

It's funny, but there is no correlation between earth 1g types of motion sickness, and space sickness at all. People who get terribly car sick can have no space sickness, and then those who don't have earth motion sickness much and be the worst in space. They have a scale named after senator and Shuttle astronaut Jake Garn, the Garn scale. Garn suffered the worst space sickness every seen. On earth, he had no motion sickness trouble at all. They say Garn was so bad, that the other severe cases they'd had would only be about 0.1 Garns. Posted by: publius, Rascally Mr. Miley (w6EFb) at April 02, 2025 03:21 AM (w6EFb) 473
Interesting, publius! I figured the curse of motion sickness was *universal* somehow. Car, train, boat, plane, carnival rides, narcotic meds... it was a godsend that antiemetics became available OTC...
Even if I were smart enough, would never attempt to become an astronaut. I *hate* puking. Posted by: JQ at April 02, 2025 03:26 AM (rdVOm) 474
The mechanism of motion sickness is not known definitely. There are only theories, educated theories, but not proven. They are convinced it is sensory conflict. Different sensory systems are giving your brain conflicting information. But exactly which systems and what conflicts are involved is not well understood. Car sickness is usually your body is telling you you're moving, but, if you're reading or something (that would always get me, especially in the back seat), your visual system is telling you you're not moving. So, look out the window, and let your visual system sense movement. In space, 0g, your vestibular system gets all confused. The little things in your inner ear that tell you which way is down are useless. Here your eyes can tell you're moving, but your vestibular system senses nothing. So here, close your eyes or focus on something narrow field not in relative motion. That can help. But it's a lot more complicated than that in zero g. We once flew in a single engine prop plane somewhere in the very 3rd world. During our one hour flight we went drastically up and down like a yoyo due to thermals (rising heat columns).
There weren't enough bags for all of us. Upon landing, Mrs. BD laid flat on the tarmac and couldn't move, let alone get up, for about 15-20 minutes. I felt very sorry for the pilot. The plane was a mess! Posted by: Biden's Dog sniffs a whole lotta malarkey, at April 02, 2025 03:39 AM (V4rQC) 477
Jim SND good for you to move on to where you thought you could get better care. Too many people just take what they are fed by drs with no question.
Prayers up from here for you. I don't know if you realize how respected and loved you are here. I remember when you were roofing, fell thru and busted yourself up, esp your ankle. It was shortly after I busted up my ankle and you kindly emailed advice for rehab. Thanks for being such a good friend, you are a good soul. T Posted by: Farmer at April 02, 2025 03:46 AM (55Qr6) 478
That zero-g spinning camera video from the other day, really had my tummy churning. Had to stop it a couple times.
Yes, I do have some inner-ear issue that has caused vertigo in the past. Also, some hearing loss & tinnitus...but not when I was a child. Meh. I just keep my feet on the ground and don't try to read while traveling, take Dramamine when 'in doubt' and so forth. Posted by: JQ at April 02, 2025 03:51 AM (rdVOm) 479
