THE MORNING RANT: Buck Shots – 4/04/2025

Monkey - Rodeo.JPG

My apologies, but personal obligations prevented time for much content today. But here are a few quick shots:

There are some conservative legal minds I follow on Twitter, whom I greatly admire, and I am very impressed at their efforts to document all the legal machinations going on with the rogue federal judges and their extra-constitutional interference in the Executive Branch. Unfortunately, documenting this nonsense is like trying to be the scorekeeper in a game of Calvinball. The Trump administration is trying to play by judicial rules that are constantly in flux, and outside the enumerated powers of the Constitution.

I assume the day is coming when Donald Trump will let John Roberts know that the Chief Justice had a chance to sit on that zoo judiciary of his, but now it’s too late, and those rogue judges will just be ignored going forward.

In fact, President Biden already set the precedent that the President can boldly ignore judicial rulings, including from the Supreme Court itself. In Biden’s own words, “The Supreme Court blocked me from relieving student debt. But they didn’t stop me.” Democrats, the media, and the Washington establishment were uniformly ecstatic at Biden for ignoring the Supreme Court.

Thanks to Joe Biden, President Trump has the green light to ignore not only the rogue federal judges, but also SCOTUS itself, and no one has any standing to complain. They didn’t think the new rules would ever come back to haunt them.

*****

Did any of you see this story out of the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel? “Wisconsin Trump voter, whose wife was detained by ICE, says he doesn't regret his vote

It reminds me of this gag:

*****

I stumbled upon this quote from Donald Kingsbury’s book “Courtship Rites.” It is a brilliant and concise corollary to Chesterton’s Gate.

Tradition is a set of solutions for which we have forgotten the problems. Throw away the solution and you get the problem back.

*****

Throckmorton’s First Law of Live Music: “If There’s an Upright Bass in the Band, It’s Probably Going to be Good”

Ace of Spades reader “Average Guy” sent me some links to a band named “Over the Rhine” whom I was not familiar with. There is so much that is good in this song, “Beyond the Recognition.” The slide guitar and piano really create a mood.

Thank you, Average Guy

Have a great weekend.

There are somewhere around 50 million foreign-born persons living in the US right now.

Trump needs to be cancelling visas left and right and kicking out everyone here without any legal status post haste.

In other words, I agree -- the rate of deportations needs to go up big time. Yuge deportations. Nationalize greyhound bus if you have to, whatever it takes.

Completely! Their cultures are so marvelous that they should not be deprived a minute longer! Why should they live in this mire of fascism?/

I went online earlier and saw small UK manufacturers bitching about the cruelty of the tariffs and calling the US vile names (90% of their business is in the US). It was fun to see people besides myself announcing the desire to buy from American producers as the UK can't see that their tariffs have the same effects on our small businesses.

That fight has been a long time coming and it's long overdue for it to come to a head.

Judges aren't allowed to issue nation-wide injunctions, and regional injunctions can't be ignored when inconvenient. We see both all the time. Some Hawaiin judge issues a nationwide injunction in favor of some pinko shit and if an appeals court issues a circuit injunction in favor of some non-pinko shit, it just gets ignored.

Just ask residents of the Sixth Circuit about that. The court overturned the COVID vaccine mandate in that circuit (the scope was correct), yet employers across the country refused to recognize it. If your company was headquartered anywhere else, most still imposed the mandate in contravention of the injunction. Zero consequences.

This "heads I win, tails you lose" crap has to be dealt with.

Over the Rhine is a neighborhood in Cincinnati. Been there more than a few times. My old boss lives there.
Was a big settlement of German immigrants in the 19th century. Was full of breweries and beer gardens. Everybody drank beer (even kids) because the water was really bad and not sanitary ...at all.
Carey Nation blanched at entering the neighborhood. There were 107 bars in a one mile stretch. Facist pig that she was.

At least you have a standard of some kind. That puts you up on most judges, who have no standards (just a short-term benefit assessment masquerading as a standard).

Is yours a *good* standard? No. Is it *a* standard? Yes. Net effect of change as compared to current conditions: positive.

How much of Jewish religious law is this?

Particularly dietary law - bans on pork and shellfish. Pigs have been domesticated for farming, but they are known to carry some nasty parasites and diseases. Seafood has its own share of parasites, and proper storage back then was probably harder with clams and other bottom-dwellers than it was with fish.

Technology and undestanding has moved on, with some blips. But it seems like the stuff we know know, is sort of what they knew then. Only now we have root causes and workarounds, so we can now have tasty, tasty bacon.

Well, most of us, anyways.

125 I get it at one level, but the Biden repudiation of SCOTUS was not based on any substantive argument at all. Whereas in at least many (hard to know about all, there are so many now) Trump v. "judiciary" cases now under way, the judges are being lawless (as well as violating their own normal procedures, just for an extra bit of zest).

And it appears to be pervasive, beyond the headline cases. Prof. Cleveland stumbled across a case in MA where a court was getting involved in an immigration matter that was expressly excluded from their jurisdiction by Congress, precisely to avoid the inevitable overflow/paralysis that will result if such involvement occurs (and this was when the caseload potential was a small fraction of what the last 4 years has created).

This all leaves aside the arrogant and unhinged departure from professional or serious standards, such as the SF fed judge who barfed up his own ignorant and idiotic mindthoughts about motivation on the part of the executive. These people are designed to be nothing more than glorified clerks. Their transformation into substantive players is an indefensible disaster.

Answer: They all have good paying jobs based on, or unaffected by, pre-Trump economic policies.

Doesn't mean they're automatically wrong, but it is something to keep in mind.
Posted by: I used to have a different nic at April 04, 2025 11:39 AM (ExV1e)

It's been a commonly accepted trope in Economics 101 for my entire lifetime. I'll admit, I didn't question it until I heard a podcast with Steve Bannon as the guest a few years ago. The host said something like "but tariffs are terrible and lead to trade wars" and Bannon asked the guy to explain how that worked and he couldn't.

And Bannon basically said, "yeah. It's an orthodoxy that tariffs are bad. But everyone, including us, uses them. I don't think there's any truth in it" and went on a whole history lesson, and thus started my path down the "tariffs are an important tool for protecting national sovereignty, and also make a ton of sense in a free market system, since they require minimal government intervention in the market, unlike something like an income tax which causes massive economic disruptions at home"

Exactly. The real sad thing here is we could have kept the '50s roaring economy going for at least another 20 years if our leaders had been more concerned with the American middle class, and less concerned with dominoes and foreign wars and bribing half the globe with access to the US market.

At this point, there are so many other structural issues, I don't know if we'll ever see that kind of roaring economy again.

But at least we can staunch the bleeding a bit by re-ordering the world economy to be a bit more US-friendly.

We had to do it. It's the cost of empire. It looks like the vassals pay tribute to the capital, but it's actually the other way around.

The key question is always, "is it worth it?" The answer is almost always "yes" - at first. It's why empires rise. Greater peace, greater homeland defense, greater stability, more markets, net benefit to the imperial capital. But that is usually transient and eventually the empire becomes too great a burden. The imperial administrators steal everything and bloat, nepotism takes hold, costs run out of control and the empire collapses. And even if none of that happens, other things change the math and empire stops being worth it.

We're on the other side of it. Empire is no longer worth it. It maybe never was, but it certainly isn't now.

Posted by: Joe Mannix (Not a cop!) at April 04, 2025 12:02 PM (WkNQM)

We've kneecapped the middle class, created a massive unaccountable imperial government, a huge domestic and international spy apparatus, completely done away with the idea of being a "free market economy" or a "self governing country", and now we're at the stage where the "elites" are stealing everything that isn't nailed down while inviting the barbarians in to sack the capitol as they flee for the exit.

FDR gets outsized - but not undeserved - blame for turning a major crash and dislocation into a epoch-making disaster.

Hoover gets virtually no blame for it, and *that* is where the primary injustice lies. The same medicine in 1929 as we got in 1920/21 - a healthy dose of Mellonism - would have worked. Unlike in 20/21, Hoover got his way in '29.

Bush 43 committed three unpardonable sins:
1. Formation of the Department of Homeland Security
2. Medicare Part D
3. No Child Left Behind

Some of his foreign policy stuff was decent - the '4x4' realignment to the pacific and the successful transfer of the locus of conflict from our shores to the Middle East and Central Asia (which ended in failure, but the initial strategy of it wasn't unsound), etc. - but he was a domestic disaster

Bretton Woods wasn't until 1944. In the 1920's, the US was not the worlds reserve currency.

It's hard to say where a recession / depression starts or to point to a single event as "the depression." In the US, we point to the stock market crash because that's easiest, but clearly the bad economic / monetary decisions pre-dated the crash. Markets don't crash for no reason.

Yes, New York banks started calling German debt during the 1930's, but then again, all banks were calling everyone's debts.

Had Europe not had so much war debt, things could have played out much differently.

But that's what I mean, there are so many variables and it's so complicated that there is not a simple answer.

I'd say the most basic takeaway is lots of debt is bad. Can cause problems when there is an economic hiccup.

3. Put them in a closed circuit

As the administration works to improve our lives & economy in the long run, progressives have again wrestled msm news away & the low infos are sucking it up: Fox News (& a zillion others) 'Whoopi Goldberg signs off "The View" with rallying cry to resist Trump.' "The View" co-host Whoopi goldberg signed off Thursday's show with a message to the 'resistance.'

Tomorrow, April 5, there's another planned, nationwide rally or visibility event, "Hands Off!"

>Axios Philadelphia, 'Philly's anti-Trump "Hand Off" protest expected to draw thousands.'

"State of play: Protesters are rallying against several Trump administration policies, including its handling of Social Security benefits, layoffs across the federal workforce, attacks on consumer protections and anti-immigrant policies and attacks on transgender people."

"This is about power and greed versus people & democracy." Exactly.

Caught w/ hands illegally in Social Security & the VA. Their civil society jobs - largely created out of whole cloth - & their bottomless government grants & contracts for loyalty to the left.

Yelling Tariffs! is a means to their end.

Actually Hawley was born in Bellefontaine Oregon, and later became the President of Willamette University

Looks are subjective, but I think the car is gorgeous. I saw it in person. It's better looking in the metal where you can see better some of the lines and detailing.

The anime thing I refer to is the style of making the damned headlights look like "angry eyes". It shows up everywhere, not just Lambos. I see it on Jeeps, on ATV's, and grocery-getters.

And that swoop in the side, with the vent forward of the rear wheels? Looks like Lambo made it functional, but the profile was found on Mustangs for years, and actually originated on the '53 Studebaker. If I had the coin to buy a Temerario, I'd have one of the top street rod builders build me a restomod '53 hardtop with LS engine and full Corvette running gear.

330 Smoot-Hawley caused the Great Depression!

I see liberals all quoting that in lockstep. They forgot the part where FDR was shoving Marxism up the country's butt with no lube.

also forgetting, "The Germans stopped issuing bonds to satisfy the WWI reparations so the easy money backing the boom went away, and all the banks holding those bonds as reserves went with it"

332 Which, I hear tell, is all Thomas Massie's fault.

Damned that Massie! He of all people should understand that standing on principles is no way to win. That is why the Dems beat us every single time.

333 I still love the "tariffs are necessary for other countries to protect their native industries but are an evil tax that hurts the people if it is the United States."

Posted by: People's Hippo Voice at April 04, 2025 12:45 PM (xFA3k)

334 The left's position on tariffs only makes sense if you view the US as fundamentally evil, the source of all that ails the world and deserving of punishment.

Which is the motivation for all of their policies.

But, sure, this time, let's pretend that they are against tariffs for good and noble reasons.

336 I first heard Ove the Rhine on a Paste magazine music sampler (when they were still a print magazine that came with a sampler CD in every issue). Like the one song enough to buy the double CD it was on. That turned out to be mostly the singer and the piano player only and kind of bland. There were enough good songs that I still have the CD but I don't pull it out but once a year or so. The sound much better with the whole band they have in that video.

337 The Demonrats constantly abuse the Constitution, the laws, and the govt to push an agenda that will destroy American society. They will get a revolution or a civil war, and they'll hate the results.

338 Brilliant post, Buck! Throwing the demokkkrats crap back at them will probably just enrage them more. It should be a meme bonanza!

339 So what do they risk if they turn out to be wrong? (As they almost certainly will.)

Also, who decides who is a "top scientist?" Are there league tables or something?

I wish there were, it would be like something out of Futurama.

I see Prof Farnstrom failed to predict the squirrels. You failed to move the decimal point, you HACK!
