Howdy, evening, and morning to all the cowboys, late toilers, and early risers!
'Tis Woden's Day: 67 F. in my neighborhood, with little wind. Stirling, the big black component of the Killer Kittenz From Outer Space is galloping around as though he were three *months* old instead of three years. Little gray Dagny is sitting in her window being aloof. Time for me to finish the second cup, change, stretch, and do my roadwork. Mornin' Wolfus. Carrying on from your comment late in the ONT - I agree, get your personal electronic as well as physical files and possessions out of the office, and do it as soon as you can. They might restrict your access on the last couple of days.

Notsothoreau, if you're here, I have a phone meeting with your financial advisor guy this morning at eight -- getting a second opinion about this annuity business. Nice of him to bother with somebody from a far distant state!

Posted by: Grumpy and Recalcitrant at March 26, 2025 *** I've got to see about my continuing use of my work email too. Normally I think they give you an additional six months after you leave. What concerns me is that if I have any documents that need to be scanned and emailed back. I have a printer, B & W, here, but no scanner. I'd hate to have to hunt for a parking place and go back into the office just for that. Once upon a time you could go to a Kinko's and they'd scan documents, but FedEx took them over. Are they still around? Posted by: Wolfus Aurelius, Dreaming of Elsewhere at March 26, 2025 04:12 AM (omVj0) 10
@Wolfus:
FedEx Office still offers scanning as a service: https://tinyurl.com/3ved4sbt There's a "Find a location" button at the top of that page. Posted by: Grumpy and Recalcitrant at March 26, 2025 04:27 AM (O7YUW) 11
Congratulations on your retirement, Wolfus. Kinko's became Fed Ex Office stores. They, or the UPS stores should be able to help you scan and email docs. You may check your local library, also.

Birdbath status?
Posted by: Just Wondering at March 26, 2025 04:30 AM (dg+HA) 13
Dishwasher + Cloud in order to get all the basic functionality:
There is only one sane answer: Nope. Refuse to buy it. Let the store know you want something that is stand alone, and be sure to tell them exactly why. Maybe they don't realize they're selling a lemon that will hurt their reputation when things eventually go pear-shaped because the manufacturer pulls something bone-headed. If the store claims stand-alone appliances without cloud aren't made anymore, don't believe them. Someone makes those. Go with a commercial unit if you have to, or find a place that fixes, refurbishes, and sells old appliances. Give them your business instead. Go to auctions, go to yard sales, find a tossed appliance on the road-side and take it on as a project. You can tear it down for scrap metal if you can't fix it and make some money at a scrap metal place that way. Get creative. Posted by: Grumpy and Recalcitrant at March 26, 2025 04:32 AM (O7YUW) 14

Morning all!
In Florida at a rental and they have the same dishwasher as Jeff mentions in his article. Of course, no manual on how to run it. I had to go online to find a copy and fiddle with it for 15 minutes to get it to work. Of course a QR code so I could use my phone to talk to a piece of equipment to tell it to wash the dishes. The rental also has a microwave with the mandatory, I guess, 30 settings to cook, saute, flambe, defrost, popcorn(it's still gonna burn) settings. C'mon. A dial to turn to minutes more or less, and a go button. That's all that's needed. Posted by: Bruce at March 26, 2025 05:08 AM (kcNOc) 28

Okay, so my friend sent me an order from Omaha Steaks. One of those 50% off or so deals. Sirloin burgers, sirloin steaks, chicken breasts, large hot dogs (4 each), a 12 pack of Italian meatballs and 4 caramel apple puffs.

Morning, 'rons and 'ronettes. 33 chilly degrees here at Stately Poppins Manor.
A few observations: - I hate "House of the Rising Sun." In fact, I can't stand most of the Animals' songs. - I would wash my clothes by hand rather than buy a washing machine that needed to be connected to the cloud for anything. - I need to switch to either home-made bread or cut it out entirely. What I eat now gives me heartburn. - I wish I could go back to sleep. And now to work. To use even something as simple as a rinse cycle, you have to connect it to wifi, download the app, and set up an online account.

This is actually a good site, IMO, if you're a conservative leaning Christian and deals with those hard types of challenging questions such as "Did God create evil?", "Why do bad things happen to good people?". I find their responses much more satisfying than Harold Kushner's book about bad things happening to good people, because he basically says, "Well, there are certain things God can't do." And yes, I think Rabbi Kushner is/was a good man and I appreciate his thoughtfulness Ana attempt to help people. The. Ok just didn't resonate with me.

From what I've gathered from various forum posts, since 1948 TIAA has always delivered on their "additional amounts" on their traditional annuity payments. And they say there are no fees for a traditional annuity with them. I'm waiting to hear back from two live TIAA sources about this "additional payments are not guaranteed" thing. My GE washer and dryer use an app for cutom functions and will text me when done. I don't have to use the wifi but I see that coming in the next generation. And then it will be a subscription to flush the toilet. This is nuts so RTM before you buy something.

Here's a thing I learned from having watched "The Girl That Got Rattled" story from the Coen Brothers' "The Ballad of Buster Scruggs". The recently deceased brother of said girl had a yappy Terrier named "President Pierce" that he had brought along for their journey west on the Oregon Trail. One of the trail bosses inquired of her whether her brother was a "doughface". Having never heard that term, I looked into it and found that In the years leading up to the American Civil War, "doughface" was used to describe Northerners who favored the Southern position in political disputes. Typically it was applied to a Northern Democrat who was more often allied with the Southern Democrats than with the majority of Northern Democrats. Today's RINOs and NeverTrumpers were yesterday's doughfaces. Posted by: Krebs v Carnot: Epic Battle of the Cycling Stars (TM) at March 26, 2025 06:33 AM (YKAdI) 92
All of the appliances we installed a little over a year ago are connected to wifi. It's awesome. Get notifications when things are done... can start the dishwasher after I've left the house and forgot to start it before I left. We often preheat the oven when we're on the way back from hockey games so we can throw dinner in as soon as we get home.

Posted by: Defenestratus at March 26, 2025 06:34 AM (WYStd) =========== I get it, but I never leave the house with an appliance running. That rule saved me big bucks one when I reluctantly left a full dishwasher with dirty dishes before a long day out. It would have been so nice to come home to sparkling dishes, but it's against my rule. When I got home, I ran the dishwasher. That was the cycle where it broke, spewing water all over the floor a few minutes after i turned it on. It would have gone through the whole cycle like that. So, the guy's house that was totally WiFi on the IoT lost it's Internet and power during an ice storm. His wife calls from their car at home and tells him she and the kids can't get into the garage, the door won't open. The front door's locked and the app won't let them in.
So he goes home and is dismayed that the house is locked up. There's no key, just an app for the wireless locks, the wireless garage door opener, etc. They end up busting a window (the alarm's down too) to get inside. Then find out they can't turn on the lights, the IoT appliances are dead and the WiFi thermostat won't operate, even after power was restored but their Internet was still down. They had to get a hotel room for two days until their Internet came back up. He said some things were Bluetooth and worked, but the whole IoT stuff was DOA until the Internet came back up. This was about 7 years ago, so stuff's probably changed since then. Posted by: Martini Farmer at March 26, 2025 07:02 AM (Q4IgG) 114

I'm pretty sure that seven years ago, they had hotspot features on the phone, and anyone who would make their home that dependent on WiFi would spend the few extra bucks for a data plan that accommodated internet disruptions. I have had to do that a lot for the regular internet disruptions here: The Air Quality meter, the weather stations, etc. besides the normal business use for internet connections. Just set the phone's WiFi name to the name of the partitioned off name used by the home's WiFi router. Regardless, even with every IoT device I have (except for the aforementioned) I can use the lights and appliances like a normal human being rather than expecting a Home Assistant to manage them. Ah, the bleeding edge example of the people who immediately give their email address and phone number to the business that has no real need for their email and phone number when asked.
I have appliances that are WiFi enabled. I'm guessing it is for the occasional firmware updates. For example the refrigerator. I'm supposed to get an alert on my phone or Alexa if the door is left open or the temperature rises. If the power goes out I'm just going to assume that I won't get an alert and the temperature is rising. (that is what whole house generators are for) Given that a computer I just bought 3 months ago got bricked last week over a Windows update, I'm sort of hesitant to have my appliance that are working Right Now to have them phone home for a firmware update. Especially after the warranty expires Read your EULA, it probably doesn't cover them bricking your appliance. Posted by: Unknown Drip Under Pressure at March 26, 2025 07:21 AM (a4flb) 126

Imagine, if you will, growing up in an era where off/on for example, was clearly delineated by a positive action then arbitrarily being forced to adapt to a soft system that you HAD to embrace if you wished to continue with your career as the friendly guy who fixed your car right the FIRST time. This changed the diagnostic procedure completely, Detroit wanted to have the procedures remain proprietary in order to freeze out independent repair shops, we were making great inroads into what was an enormously profitable market.

Posted by: Unknown Drip Under Pressure at March 26, 2025 07:16 AM (a4flb) I like the idea of connected devices, but the reality is much different. I use a grand total of one connected device, which is a door lock which opens via an app. So I can give people access to my home with a simple texted link. But this lock is also a key lock, so if the system fails, I can still get in. Posted by: CharlieBrown'sDildo at March 26, 2025 07:25 AM (L5An7) 129
I have an electric toothbrush that has bluetooth (ha) enabled and you can get an app for it on your phone. I haven't done anything to set it up on the web, though, and it works just fine as a toothbrush.
That's the sort of thing I would prefer--have the IoT as an option if you want it, not an essential thing in order to operate it at all. Posted by: BeckoningChasm at March 26, 2025 07:26 AM (WPL6O) 130

I like the idea of connected devices, but the reality is much different.
Its nice to have a Ring doorbell detect a human approaching and turning the porch light on between dusk and dawn. Its nice to know when the garage door has been opened/closed. Its nice to hear a bump in the night and yell out "Prison Yard" and 50,000 lumens all around the property come on at once. Its stupid for the dryer to notify your phone when the clothes are dry when it already has the ability to tumble them to keep them from getting wrinkled. I have not a single appliance in my home that I want connected to the internet or my phone. I don't want an oven that watches the roast for me. I don't want my refrigerator ordering food (or telling me my milk is expiring). I don't want to be able to unlock my front door from the office (not even my home office).
I have this massive urge to bring down the internet right as all the boomers/gen x'ers exit this world, just to hear the wailing and gnashing of teeth. The cries of "Please teach us a life hack for this!" will be tremendous. Posted by: GWB at March 26, 2025 07:48 AM (T3e+N) 137
