Good for her. I mean that. She was a heart failure waiting to happen. She is still very obese but it's good that she is working towards healthy. Most of the recent shooting rampages have been girls that try to turn into boys. Can't handle the testosterone hormone is possible reason just like the rare XYY genetic types.

The males that commit violence are quite often just males in a dress instead of any actual medical dosing or transing. They just declare themselves female and often these are the ones in female sports, going into female locker rooms, etc.

Simply an expression of anti social behavior to screw over a gender they believe has it all. From what I've read, asb disorders are not nearly as common among females wanting to be male.

I have a strong memory -- or so I thought -- that Sam actually puts on the Ring at Cirith Ungol and stabs a bunch of orcs with Sting while invisible.

However, upon re-reading it, he never puts on the ring when he's actually in Cirith Ungol (or in Mordor, period) and never stabs any orcs while invisible.

I know Tolkein rewrote parts of LOTR. Does anyone remember this? Is it possible I read one of his "uncorrected" versions of LOTR?

There is some kind of Watcher statue at the pass and he uses the ring to force by it and go into Mordor then he turns back when he hears that Frodo isn't dead. I don't recall if he mentions getting by it a second time.

Morgoth was the big bad in the first age. Sauron was his lieutenant and Lord of Werewolves, so, as Tolkien noted somewhere, less evil in that he at least served another at one time. Morgoth only served himself.

Remember, Morgoth and his titanic struggles against the other Valar is simply a backstory by JRR Tolkien. Wasn't even released until after JRR's death. Sauron was a reflection of the damage that Morgoth left behind when thrust literally out the world by the Valar. Morgoth left his taint on the world so that it was never quite perfect again until the remaking. Arguably, Tom Bombadil was the only one really not affected by that as he appears to have been in Middle Earth even before Morgoth and light itself.

Yeah, The Hobbit was essentially a lark for his kids that got published. The publisher asked for a sequel. He tied The Hobbit to the Silmarillion, and there's also assertion that he wanted The Silmarillion published at the same time as The Lord of the Rings.

in the book, Sauron doesn't immediately know you have the Ring on or see you. It's implied that he kinda has a sense but it's not like it is in the movie, where he just sees you right away.

in the book, sam puts on the ring right on the border of Mordor and Sauron doesn't notice. in the movie, he never puts it on, because the movies have established the rule that if you put it on Sauron immediately sees you.

the books can be good but are surprisingly light on action. A lot of the epic fights are only narrated in retrospect, with one character filling another in after the fact, when we know the battle was won, so there's no excitement.

the movies are much, much better for action and tension during fights.

Morgoth was a Vala (the Valar were sort of Archangels who were present and sang along with Eru Illuvatar (i.e., God) sang the universe into existence. Morgoth, then named Melkor, sang a dissonant tune, not in keeping with the others.

Sauron was a Maia (the Maiar were like regular angels, of a lower rank... Gandalf, the other wizards, and the Balrog were also Maiar, as were some distant ancestors of Aragorn and Elrond).

Morgoth was defeated and cast out of the Universe, but the Universe was diminished in the process. Sauron was basically a Shemp to Morgoth's Curly... not of the same caliber.

Tolkien's dayjob as a Prof at Oxford was etymology for entries to the Oxford English Dictionary series and so he was knowledgeable about the different nuances of language influence to the extent he could and did invent his own Elvish language (and dwarvish to a lesser extent).

Often epic poems were used along with sagas by the Norse among other peoples to inform how the language was to be understood by context. So Tolkien's aim was to create a mythos for the English people.

If you want accessible Tolkien. Try Farmer Giles of Ham--a funny dragon story with a dog.

A macabre Frankenstein story had a dude wanting to be a woman to the extent they implanted a dead woman's womb, etc. into this dude. Of course he died of sepsis. About the same as the dude whose fantasy in Germany was for someone to kill him, cook him, and eat him. Someone took the bait and did so. Guy claimed consent from the victim as a legal defense. German courts decided NAH BRO, but gave him a relatively light sentence from memory (hazy but eight years sticks in the mind or something).

You need to think of it as a study of mythology of Middle earth like Bullfinch's mythology for Roman and Greek that I ran into in 6th grade for a while. Did the Vikings and put the subject aside. But its not a story, its a reference. Their are some good stories in there, like Luthien and the Silmarils vs the Sons of Feanor that show a very different kind of Elf fighting a hopeless war against a god to recover them, while taking days off to betray and slaughter their kin. Right up my alley.

Good reading except compared with the Lord in the OT. Alluvatar is hands off apparently in Tolkien's hands. Similar to conceptions of the Lord in 17th century rationalism circles as in a Creator who then let his creation flow rather than controlling it.

In the books the ghosts take out the fleet, and then are occupied by Gondor troops from the south led by Lord of Dol Amroth and given and given a ride to Minas Tirith.

But yes, the point of that was letting the ghosts redeem their oath and not breaking your own as the new King.

Peter Jackson took out one of the bigger fights, the Scouring of the Shire. I understand it, but Frodo and the gang infiltrate, raise a revolt in the shire an fight several battles against Saruman and his human henchmen.

I don't disagree with PJ doing so, but it shows how the 4 hobbits have grown relative to the hobbits in the Shire.
