First World Problems...

DumbHandle555.jpg

It's difficult to see in the photo, but that door is guaranteed to smash one's fingers or knuckles if opened the normal way, by grasping the handle and pushing.

Why? Because the handle is mounted so close to the edge of the door that it is impossible to open without pain unless one is delicate and careful and holds the handle by the edge while simultaneously curling one's hand away from the other door.

Which nobody does. So they smash their thumbs or knuckles or fingers, depending on their preferred door-opening technique, against the other door, and then curse.

Loudly.

12 Similar enough, the back seats of Jeeps aren't meant for humans.

If you have knees, they will always bang on the frame, and if you have feet, they have this lip on the bottom you have to lift them over, while banging your knee on the frame.

And if you try to swing your legs out, and get down from the seat without touching any of the metal, you look like a five year old getting out of a bar stool, the seats are so high.

Designed by people who have no friends.

14 The china door-knob fell off the fitting at my dad's house's front door the other day, and on inspection, the lead cramping it to the cast iron shaft came off from too much work. I suspect that knob is original to the house, and it has been there since it was built in 1898, though it might date to the first remodel about 1900 when they built the extension.
Things just don't last like they used to!

(I am researching if I want to melt and pour more lead to fix the handle back on. Because of course I do.)

46 Our dorm room in Leningrad had a squeaky hinge. Very loud. Finally one of the guys had a brainstorm. He brought butter back from the cafeteria (the butter was fresh and excellent, BTW) and used it to lubricate the hinge. Problem solved.

I was the one who initiated the ritual of someone saying something "Brezhnev's mom wears army boots" every night before lights out. For the benefit of the poor bottom-rung KGB shlub who was tasked with eavesdropping on college guys talking about women and sports and how shabby the USSR was.

This was a pre-Revolutionary building, right across the river from the Winter Palace.

57 The US Institute of Peace thing reminds me of a classic. That institute was the darling project of then-Sen. Spark Matsunaga (D-HI), who was a very nice guy (and his front office receptionists .... wow, always very hawt and Japanese-American).

One of Spark's other pet projects was a "Peace Academy". When the Dear Colleague letter came around asking for co-sponsors for his bill to establish such, my staff superior had one of the great comments of all time.

He scrawled, in the space on the cover sheet where his remarks go - "I was under the impression we already fully funded 3 peace academies?". The boss signaled his laughter and approval with his distinctive giant check mark over the whole page. Hilarious.

95 I finally replaced my In-Sink-Erator (I love that name) with good old plain pipe.

Disposal was there when we bought the house. But didn't really use it because we are on septic. So once in a while I'd have to put the little weird wrench thingy in the bottom and turn it to break it loose. If finally bit the dust so I replaced it with another disposal since they are stupid easy to replace.

This one rusted up too much to save it, too. So this time I spent more time and less money and just replumbed it with pipe.

96 Last night my wife and I decided we were going to Europe in May. Can't decide where. Neither of us have spent time in Poland, Czech, Hungary, etc. so we figured we should go there. Then I really thought about it, and decided it would be a lot simpler to go to Germany (where I was stationed from 91-94), but that violates the principle we were pursuing, which was to go somewhere neither of us have been. So we are in First World Problem limbo at the moment.

97 Sunday afternoon is a time for reflection. March came in like a lion. Lots of snow and bitter cold. The snow and cold gave way to a couple of beautiful days followed by more snow. The sun returned with the promise of spring and here we are. The penultimate day of March and I’m enjoying watching the snow fall outside. No lambs here.

107 @Shadout That is what started our conversation yesterday. We have had 3 instances where we have had an overseas trip cancelled due to war/unrest. One was to Spain in High School when we bombed Libya and Spain closed their airspace to US planes (or something like that), one was the pandemic, which was planned to go back to Germany with a bunch of Army buddies, and one time my wife had to leave Italy as a college student because of some terrorist bullshit, ended up chilling in Brussels. Anyway, she asked me "Where do you want to go that we might not be able to go in the future". My instinctive response was Poland, etc.

119 For the benefit of the poor bottom-rung KGB shlub who was tasked with eavesdropping on college guys talking about women and sports and how shabby the USSR was.

Classic Cold War story - one of the Western embassies in Moscow had a New Year's party for all the Western diplomats in an insecure part of the embassy.

As the alcohol flowed, one of the diplomats began talking about the poor KGB shlub who had to listen in on their drunken conversations, and was missing out on the New Year's festivities (which is a big, big deal in Russia).

They kept commiserating about the poor KGB guy not being able to enjoy New Year's, and then, a few minutes before midnight, the phone in the room rang.

One of the diplomats picked up the phone, and heard the sound of a popping champagne cork on the other end of the line. The other party then hung up.

Warsaw/Krakow have excellent bus and tram systems, and there are good trains from city to city. Be aware, it's all in Polish and dadgum that is hard to learn. Taxis are not expensive, so they are easy to use to get around town, and there are tours for the salt mines andd Auschwitz, which are a better choice than going on your own. The Elektor Hotel in Krakow was the hotel of choice down there, and the Sheraton in Warsaw is really good.

Both the milk and the dark chocolate are good, and the history of the company is really cool - Wedel was Polish-German, but refused to join the volksdeutch during WWII - he kept putting off the Germans demanding that he do so in order to keep his factory running to provide as many jobs as possible for Poles. He ran an underground school when schools were closed, provided meals, medical care, and used chocolate bars as a means of sending messages to the Resistance. It's been bought and sold to chocolate conglomerates now, which is a shame.

What the others have said. I have had good luck taking it apart as far as possible and then soaking it in a CLR type acid. You don't need to disassemble it though.

If the showerhead unscrews from the hose, take it off and soak it in a large cup or container. If not, let it hang from its hose and put a ziploc baggie around it. Fill with enough CLR or whatever to cover the openings, then zip tie or rubber band the baggie to the hose and let it soak for a couple of hours.
