The Morning Rant: Minimalist Edition

punk-monkey.jpg

There are jabbering fools on the left who make statements that, while seemingly in English, make absolutely no sense. For instance, transsexual and race jargon lends itself to nonsense, and many on the left are happy to use it. Perhaps it makes it easy to speak without engaging their brains, or maybe they enjoy carefully hiding the truth with an argot that most people can only scratch their heads at and cringe. Or maybe (and this is my choice) they really are stupid and ignorant and think they are making sense. Or all three -- that's always a good choice.

However I don't expect arrant nonsense from The Trump administration, but we got it in spades from Steven Witkoff, the United States Special Envoy to the Middle East.

And it's not just nonsense... it is ahistorical, devoid of facts, and ignores a massive amount of evidence that supports the contrary position.

Hamas 'not as ideologically extreme as portrayed,' says Trump envoy

“We need to understand what Hamas wants and then think about what we can offer them to make them leave. That is what needs to happen here. At the start of the conflict, we heard that ‘Hamas is an ideology, and they are ready to die,’” the official told controversial media figure Tucker Carlson.

“I don’t think they are as ideologically extreme as they're often portrayed," Witkoff went on to say of Hamas. "They send young children who understand nothing to commit suicide with explosive belts. Once we understand that they want to live, we can talk to them more effectively.”

He said it was imperative that Hamas disarms. “They need to demilitarize, and then they might also be politically involved in Gaza.”

Where to start...

First of all, the Hamas ideology was on full display on October 7th, 2023, when they sent thousands of their terrorists into Israel to murder Jewish Israelis and anyone else they could get their hands on. The barbarity on display that day was a testament to their ideological fanaticism, and to suggest otherwise is simply ignorant, or willfully blind for political purposes.

Second; it wasn't just Hamas that demonstrated savagery and inhumanity. It was the supposedly innocents of Gaza that poured through the fences and raped and murdered and tortured and kidnapped... all in service to that evil ideology.

There is ample evidence that the entire culture of Gaza has been subsumed into a rabidly anti-Jew, anti-Israel mania. School books, children's cartoons, entire curricula are dedicated to the single-minded goal of the destruction of Israel and the Jewish people. The focus of Gazan culture (such as it is) is death in service to this mania. The people of Gaza seem to support it enthusiastically, as evidenced by their active participation in it.

Whether it is a reflection of larger Islam (it clearly is), or a malign mutation simply doesn't matter. The facts on the ground should govern, and Witkoff is either blind and a willing dupe, or has ulterior motives that are antithetical to the Trump administration's realpolitik in the Middle East.

Witkoff is an awful choice for Special Envoy, and why he was chosen is an interesting glimpse into Donald Trump's mindset. They are birds of a feather (NY city real estate), and Witkoff is known to be a good negotiator. But he also has a significant financial involvement in the Middle East, included with Qatar, which is the primary supporter of...Hamas!

He needs to disavow his connections to Qatar, repudiate his idiotic statements about Hamas, or resign.

I hope he resigns. People that conniving, or that stupid have no place in the Trump administration.

The Dems are yammering about a developing conflict between Witkoff and Rubio as a way of trying to develop dysfunction in the Trump admin. The accusation is that Witkoff is functioning as a SoS, and Rubio is being cut out. Rubio denies it, of course, but I'm not so sure.

77 I'm no fan of this Witkoff guy and think he's in over his head. That being said, I think the basic point he was trying to make isn't that controversial.

He was trying to say that Hamas isn't all just insane suicide bombers, and that some of them want to live. That was his point about how the leaders send dumb brainwashed kids to blow themselves up, while they remain in safety and in many cases luxury. These people, mostly the leaders, do certainly want to live. They want someone else to blow themselves up.

On that point, he is correct. I'm not sure what his larger point was. I think he was trying to say that since not all of Hamas is willing to die, there's some daylight to try to broker some kind of deal. On that point, I think he's wrong. 85 Presidential envoys have one key fact over US history, they have the confidence of the president that sent them which State Dept or other formal envoys may not have. Also sidesteps past history of those formal envoys.

FWIW, I don't care so much about the blathering that envoys or politicians do; it is more about their actions. Did Witkoff betray Israel? Demonstrate partiality through his actions against Israel as to no longer be an adequate negotiator? And so on. As far as conflicts of interest, everyone has one that is probably useful to act as a negotiator between sides.

So the real question is a) whether both sides want peace (which it is apparent that Ham Ass does not), or b) if not, what is the US going to do that Israel cannot?

That has become apparent that US is now leaning on Egypt to actually do something for the billions that we have sent them to get the Palis out of Gaza.

I think the US is doing that to try to avoid the harmful dilemma that Israel faces otherwise. Either endless occupation as a police state which breeds even more hatred or OT style slaughter because Gazans base their society on killing Israelis and nothing else. Either will isolate Israel

The problem with doing that is a) harm to the Israelis' own psyche as doing that is contrary to much of the values that Israel promotes, b) it will utterly isolate Israel internationally in a way that the internal slaughter of Cambodians by the Khmer Rouge did to that state.

Today's Israel is so solicitous of not offending Muslims that it allows them to control access to the Temple Mount and other religious places to the detriment of Jews (and Christians somewhat). The reason is the risk of offending 1.8 billion Muslims is not worth the gains in the view of the Israeli government. Slaughtering all the Gazans, Old Testament style, would certainly make Israel a pariah state, likely even in the US.

So the best option is what Trump proposed--haul Gazan bodies outta there to other Muslim nations. Separation is about the only thing left to prevent Israel from becoming a police warden over Gaza again or becoming a pariah state. Gazans have defined themselves as killers of Israelis--that leaves Israeli with few options--run an outdoor prison or slaughter.

I read the Atlantic post last night. I think its Wuhan Flu-Wet Market implausible.

Donald Trump wouldn't put up with a security breach infraction for a moment. As of now, I haven't seen one mention of Michael Waltz being fired.

I know next to nothing about PDC encryption, but how does one read encrypted messages with White House-level security encryption on a private phone or PC without the necessary modules or even a software encryption key? One doesn't get access to decrypted messages by being inadvertently added to an IM or email list.

Remember the brouhaha that erupted when Barry was castigated for texting on his Blackberry? IC boffins had to re-engineer a Blackberry with the necessary hardware/software to enable the device for POTUS-level encryption.

Sketchy, to say the least. The texts read rather polished, too.

Tiresome inside the Beltway crap meaning nothing. But, the story as I can best decipher is that Waltz had a staffer that set it up. Whether Waltz did this leak intentionally or via poor judgment of double checking his device, the end result has been nothing other than a tempest in a teacup.

Often, too many of these people in high places have the personal understanding of Maxwell Smart of technology and that means overreliance on aides to wipe their butt and do that 'complicated' stuff.

Then the last possibility is that the leak was done intentionally which we cannot rule out. No ops plans, etc. were discussed as it appears as mostly political. Why this could have been done is a warning to other bad players in the world, like Iran as it shows a very different and competent administration working together.

Observationally, we cannot tell the difference from the outside; all we can know is that the Houthis got pounded and a leak occurred at Waltz's doorstep--whether intentional or not.

Given the blather in statements, it really doesn't matter as Ham Ass shot itself in the Ass again by failure to release American hostages and trying to attack Israel again. Simply put, I think Witkoff is there to try to get Gaza to self deport to another locale far away from the Israeli border. Trump is leaning on Egypt via its billions in aid (and probably the Saudis, etc. that can lend billions more to build somewhere for those pariahs to go.

So like the Waltz story, focusing on words rather than actions can often be a problem because far too often in humans, words and actions are two widely divergent realities.

Yep. Personally, I think we should return to the less imperial court system before the 1890's 'reforms'. District court judges used to be something like magistrate judges are today. For any important decision, you had two judges involved--often a circuit judge (which would now only be appellate) plus a district judge (or two).

Moving back to three judge district court panels for declaring laws/actions of fedgov or state laws unconstitutional would be another improvement (this was the law from the 1900's to 1976 (again reforms).

Their concept of sin is that they are helpless to resist, and the only remedy is to have zero temptation. So when they leave their own country and travel of course they sleep with prostitutes, and it's the fault of the evil west that we put that temptation before them.

It's a huge driver for the absolutism of their cause. They cannot possibly co-exist or compromise, and at the same time be serving allah, because he's told them they can't stop sinning until everyone is under islam, by choice or by force.

OT and late, but something nice for today: NIH cancels three grants at U Penn. Two of them -- TWO -- examined nicotine addiction and vaping among sexual and gender minorities.

NIH:

“Research programs based on gender identity are often unscientific, have little identifiable return on investment, and do nothing to enhance the health of many Americans. Many such studies ignore, rather than seriously examine, biological realities. It is the policy of NIH not to prioritize these research programs.”

Grant money withdrawn, study canceled even though it was a few years in (this was a 5-year grant ffs).

“Michael Waltz has learned a lesson, and he’s a good man,” Trump told NBC News."

"...the Hegseth post contained operational details of forthcoming strikes on Yemen, including information about targets, weapons the U.S. would be deploying, and attack sequencing."

"According to the lengthy Hegseth text, the first detonations in Yemen would be felt two hours hence, at 1:45 p.m. eastern time. So I waited in my car in a supermarket parking lot. If this Signal chat was real, I reasoned, Houthi targets would soon be bombed. At about 1:55, I checked X and searched Yemen. Explosions were then being heard across Sanaa, the capital city.

I went back to the Signal channel. At 1:48, “Michael Waltz” had provided the group an update. Again, I won’t quote from this text, except to note that he described the operation as an “amazing job.”"

Sorry, but that particular appeal to authority was ruined by high ranking scumbags a long time ago, and it's only gotten worse and worse and then more worserer as the years pass.

Most likely done by George Marshall under orders from FDR. The leak was to McCormick who was publisher of the anti FDR Chicago Tribune. There is an interesting story from the inside by a retired officer (General Wedemeyer) who was in the War Plans department at the time and questioned by the FBI over it. The whole FBI leak investigation was basically perfunctory exercise.

FDR wanted Mustache Man to declare war on the US and spent about a year trying to incite him to do it. Thomas Fleming wrote the story in 1987 in American Heritage.

314 There is no such thing as a great movie because cinema is a fundamentally preposterous medium for artistic expression. It engages too many senses to be poignant and too few to be immersive.

"Enjoyable" is the highest height cinema can aspire to. "Not boring" is the normal victory condition. "Great" is for the theater or the museum, not the movies.

Harrumph.
