Weasel, has anyone ever pointed out that your left thumb in the 1917 video makes it look like the spent round is stuck in the rifle? (At least on a phone.) The angle makes your thumb look like it's sticking right out of the loading area, and the spent brass isn't visible enough as it exits. It's kind of funny.
Also, nice shooting and nice info. Posted by: GWB at March 23, 2025 07:18 PM (mot4u) 25

have you been to the range?
Yes. Twice in the past few days. As I previously reported on the gub thread, I was struggling with proper grip. I wasn't shooting badly but was not comfortable or consistent. Felt like I had plateaued and was having trouble diagnosing and improving. Clearly the targets were off, the ammo was flawed, the gub wasn't zeroed, and the floor was sloped. After fixing all that, I kept trying to work on my own fundamentals, but obviously wasn't hitting the mark. After an unsatisfying range trip, Grateful and I sat down and talked about it, analyzed it, broke every aspect into smaller pieces, and said incantations. Talking it though was very helpful. Thought we found a thing or two. Made a second range trip to validate. Confirmed. Much better. I made a breakthrough that feels like a much better foundation for progress going forward. Fundamentals, kids! That Weasel guy knows what he's talking about. Full credit to Grateful. Unpossible without her. Posted by: TRex at March 23, 2025 07:19 PM (t/HCa) 28

Anyway, range report, monthly silhouette match. Yesterday dawned bright and cool with very little breeze. But, by the time the match started, there was still very little breeze but things had warmed up a bit.
Match format was such I started at the 400 meter silhouettes, from there to 500 meter silhouettes, all half size, turkey @ 400 and rams @ 500 (turkeys are tall and thin, rams wide but short) I started off well on the 400 then missed the last two turkeys, for 3 out of 5, 4 for 5 @ 500 meters on the rams. At 200 and 300 meters, I technically went 10 for 10, but, alas, shot the wrong pig @ 300 meters, so, it didn't count. In the end, 5 for 5 @ 200 meters on the chickens and officially 4 for 5 on the pigs @ 300 meters. I tied with 2 other shooters for last place, with an aggregate score of 16 out of 20. Three guys shot a perfect score, had a shoot off which lasted 1 round, because the first guy hit and the other two missed. Great match day, all in all. One of the pleasures of a model 1917 or similar 30-06 is that those bolt action rifles can be used for reduced loads with cast bullets. Everything from lower power loads with good old 4759 powder down to gallery loads with a cast round ball thumb pressed into the case mouth. Those loads won't shoot over the horizon but will punch paper or hit a gong out to 200 yards once you learn how to adjust the battle sights.

Damn arthritis is spreading and getting worse in my hands. I might have to do a little gun trading this week. The 1911 is getting tough regarding the hammer, mag and slide release. Surprisingly, the Ruger lil' bastard LCP is no problem in the left hand, but right handed I'm having grip trouble. That's OK as it is pretty much dedicated to left pocket carry because of the cane. No problems yet with the G17.

Went to Shooter's Outpost in Hooksett, NH yesterday. They have a museum room, and my jaw is still on the floor.
In the center of the room are machineguns. As in Vickers, Lewis, Browning, Maxim, MG34, MG42 etc. But the REALLY special stuff is on the walls. Thompons, Grease Guns and MP40s, naturally. But how about a PPSh41, Swedish K, Beretta Modelo 12 and even a Walther MPK? Not rare enough? How about these: Japanese Type 100 SMG. STG44 with a Krummlauf barrel. And a complete Springfield 1903 with a Pedersen Device and magazine. I felt like I walked into Ian V. Hogg's complete bibliography. Posted by: Taro Tsujimoto at March 23, 2025 07:29 PM (5YmYl) 42

41 At the end of WW2, American forces occupied one of the larger German small arms plants, maybe DWM or Mauser. They had a huge reference armory with guns of the world. In it was an 03 Mk1 Springfield and the super secret Pedersen device with all the accoutrements and spare magazines. How did they get that?

For today's DMV MGC trip today, I brought a SIG M11A1 and the Walther PPK/S SD. I confirmed that the M11A1 hits below point of aim consistently. Any ideas to correct this? A "Bubba" job to the front or rear sights is not possible because both sights have tritium inside.
The Walther PPK/S SD has had a lot of teething troubles. Rounds would fail to extract after the first ten rounds or so. I traced that to the grip screw backing out after prolonged firing. Tightening up the grip screw appears to solve the problem. I managed to get through about half a box of ammo today without a failure to feed today. The tiny sights and lighting conditions on the range made the sights difficult to pick up. I had to bring in the target to 3 or 5 yards to get rounds into the target consistently. Shooting the PPK/S SD suppressed is a lot of fun. The .32 ACP ammo it uses is mild in recoil, and the suppressor did a good job keeping the sound down. The direct blowback action does put a bit of gas in your face, though. The suppressor does completely block the use of the sights. But if you'll be using this for real, 3-5 yards is all you';; get from this setup. You have to be very close up to use this. Posted by: Ed L at March 23, 2025 07:35 PM (AiJK3) 48

Posted by: haffhowershower at March 23, 2025 07:32 PM (NMT5x) Don't know if this was mentioned, but in a work of fiction a son was introduced to shooting with cans of tomatoes. Don't remember the caliber, but watching the can explode when hit would probably be fun to make happen. Water bottles might also work - and likely easier to clean up. So here's an idea I'm throwing out, maybe for the TxMoMe, or any other get together for that matter.
Since our 250th birthday is coming up next year, how about featuring gubs in the .250 caliber range? What I mean is, a featured shoot for those that have those calibers, or at least '250' in them. I've got a Lyman's reloading book from 1970 and I'm looking through the calibers. .22/250 .25/20 Winchester .250/3000 Savage .25/06 I'm sure there are more, and there can be some wiggle room. I think a .257 Weatherby Magnum would be allowed. .250 for the caliber, and the 7 because it'll be shot on Sunday, the 7th day? I don't know, just spitballin'... Posted by: haffhowershower at March 23, 2025 07:38 PM (NMT5x) 52
Ed L, what kind of ammo in the M1911A1? Some ammo is loaded right to original military specs and some is a bit hotter. Maybe see if there some hotter ammo out there which is reliable?

The DMV MGC finally managed an outing at the range today. Weasel, I want you to know that it was the threat of reporting the slackards to you that made it happen.
Had a small personal triumph. I took apart the Glock48 which had been jamming and cleaned it. when I went to put it back together, did something wrong and the slide got stuck. Could not remove it to reposition. I thought I was going to have to have Blaster help me out. When I checked it this morning was able to remove the slide and by turning the gun upside down was able to properly set it correctly on the guides and Voila, fixed. 54 They told me awhile back I had the flavor of arthritis that would spread and they were right. Knees, ankles, hip, and now in the shoulders and hands. I had a chiropractor at the VA (our clinic has one along with an accupuncturist) show me how to shoulder a rifle without discomfort. Forget the USMC elbow raised and imagine I'm shooting a shotgun at a Wabbit. As far as the hands, I just might go back to a good ol' J frame for EDC.

This week at the range, I forgot to bring enough 9mm ammo so I only had one box. I used my church gun (PSA Micro Dagger) to practice draw+fire drills and then practiced double taps with my G44 in .22. Even in .22, you really want to clamp down your grip on double taps to keep them in the 10 ring. Still...fun enough. Just need to buy moar ammo! Put this under guns you didn't buy but at least had a reason. Pawn and gun shop had a Colt Pocket Positive, which is one of the neatest little guns of the 20th century IMHO. This one was bright and shiny, with a real nice old reblue, maybe even factory, and a 2" (maybe a skosh shorter) barrel. Trouble is it was .32 Colt, not .32 Colt New Police. New Police is actually .32 S&W while .32 Colt is simply not available. The little guy was a consignment from a local that's been doing a safe clean out for a couple years.

Since I have reached the bottom of the content, where the ammo links are, I will again mention Ammo squared. They are like ammo mutual fund. Send them some amount of money, tell them which type of ammo to buy (you can divvy it up between calibers and types of ammo), and they will keep it in your account. Let them know when you want it delivered and it gets shipped to you, some or all of it.
Most of it is not brand specific, but you have categories like n send you an email when they're about to "9mm, range, 115gr" and "30-06, Garand, range". They even send you an email to remind you that you're about give them your money (because you initially set it up like a mutual fund where you auto-buy). I need to get enough in there to have some sent to me, and I'll provide more info. Posted by: GWB at March 23, 2025 07:56 PM (MFVNc) 76
I have noticed that the price of ammo has come down some. I bought some 124 gr to try out in my Glocks and it seemed to work very smoothly. it used to be more expensive than 115 gr but now seems pretty similar.

Ed L, Firing a faster and lighter bullet than the pistol's sights were regulated for results in low hits. You get a similar issue with rifle sights but worse. Basically your Sig might require a different 9mm ammo than what you shot at the range. This is assuming everything else was correct.
The Sig design was built around 124 gr NATO which is a bit stiffer than std pressure under SAAMI but not +p. You can also play around with recoil springs which can tune your Sig. Just a thought. Posted by: blake - semi lurker in marginal standing (tT6L1) at March 23, 2025 07:38 PM (tT6L1) The original spec for the 1911 pistol trials was a 230 FMJ bullet delivering 802 feet per second of velocity at the muzzle. By the 1980s, MILSPEC ammo was still 230 FMJ, but the muzzle velocity was between 820 and 830 feet per second. The caution about using hotter than MILSPEC ammo is the wear and tear hotter ammo will put on your pistol. The places I know of are the breech block where the firing pin protrudes, extractor, and the frame behind the barrel link and recoil spring. Of course, your recoil spring and mainspring will wear faster. If the steel on the frame or breech block begins to visibly deform, it might be time to retire the pistol. Keep in mind that WWI/WWII steel isn't as strong as modern steel and therefore, won't take the pounding we can dish out w/ hot ammo. Posted by: Ed L at March 23, 2025 08:06 PM (AiJK3) 85

Posted by: Ed L ======= Winchester, among some other brands, mostly imported, sell range ammo in 9mm 124gr that is NATO spec including the crimped primer pockets. Look for the symbol. Assuming nothing else happened, the typical issue with fixed sights comes from shooting relatively fast and lighter 115 gr or lighter at 1200 fps or greater when military spec 9mm, are regulated for about 1180-1200 fps. Slightly under what SAAMI calls +p as far as pressure goes. Reloaders can speed up or slow down loads to fit sight regulation but the easiest way, albeit pricey at times, most people do is to have adjustable back sights. Adjustable sights are especially important in revolvers because something like the 357 Magnum or other high performance magnums shoot to different points of impact relative to the sights depending the bullet weight and velocity. Cop or military revolvers in 38 Spec. have fixed sights for durability but that usually means cop guns being regulated for the FBI load-aka 158 gr +p if old. Sometimes 130 gr Std Pressure for military revolvers. Posted by: whig at March 23, 2025 08:29 PM (ctrM5) 115

I had one of those tiny Rossi .22s, replicating an M frame S&W Ladysmith. Put one shot down range, must have clipped the bleach bottle right at the cap and knocked it over. Posted by: Ed L ======= FWIW, play around with ammo selection before trying to tweak recoil springs. Euro 9mm that is NATO might shoot fine to where the poa equals the poi at something like 15 or 25 yards (might be in your manual what the sights and recommended ammo load are regulated for). FWIW, you can also try a heavier bullet at std pressure aka the 147 gr std. pressure. Even though it is slower, it will shoot higher than faster and lighter. If you really want to know, there is an actual formula incorporated bullet weight, velocity, and sight height. Matters a lot for long arms at a distance as you have to zero with each different load (powder+bullet (and sometimes primer)) at whatever your zero range will be. Recoil springs kits are usually tweaked for competitors that often have a set of chrony specs they have to meet for competition and that can mean faster, heavier, or higher pressure loads (especially for comped race guns) and often they tinker with recoil springs (if they do not reload) to meet what they need. Since Ed brought up shooting low...
I was reading about the Beretta 30X this week. That's the mouse gun I've had my eye on, and I might have enough refund to buy it. There are 3 models. One that I want is the Get Home edition, with a threaded barrel. Because the gun is so small, the sights at "suppressor height" evidently make the gun's POI lower than the POA. It is accurate, just not where you're putting the sights. It's still what I want. It ain't for work at a distance where it matters. Posted by: GWB at March 23, 2025 08:42 PM (EpnP+) 127
WRT shooting glasses: Yes, I wear them. Long story short, I’ve had corrective eye surgery, technically I am good to go w/o glasses. Just bought a pair of prescription Oackley shooting glasses last year. The prescription is, of course, additive to my surgically corrected eyes. The lenses are progressive. My eye doctor (who is a shooter too) gave me the prescription.
My shooting got measurably better, and I’m pretty sure it wasn’t a fluke. My normal shooting is long range pistols, usually single shot stuff w/silly rifle calibers, brakes & rifle scopes. Ranges from 100 - 1200 yards, typical 200-1000. Lots of precision. So, consider adding a prescription to your safety glasses. Posted by: Just anothermike at March 23, 2025 08:42 PM (f2FgH) 128

Posted by: Ed L ======= Specs of your +p should be on the box as to fps velocity and bullet weight of course. It gets weird as zeroing for fixed sights means you find the load that shoots true to your sights and stick with it or do the kentucky windage which is not a great thing to do with a defensive weapon because it makes you inconsistent in fast shooting. Last is to switch out the rear sights for rear tritium sights. They make them for a lot of pistols but usually expensive. You can also reach out to Sig as they have pretty good customer service. If you ever get into Smith and Wessons, 3rd generation and earlier 9mms and other domestic brands are specifically built around the 115 gr bullet at 1250 or so fps. Euro guns from the 60's on are built around the 124 gr NATO spec at the 1180-1200 fps. Posted by: whig at March 23, 2025 08:43 PM (ctrM5) 129
My neighbor wants a carry gun and we've been discussing some options. Florida enacted constitutional carry but he went and got his CCW so as to be able to do same-day purchase at stores and gun shows, and also be legit in reciprocal states.
We looked at all the specs for the small semiautomatics but I'm now advising him to get the Smith 642 Airweight 5-shot DAO revolver in 38-special. This because fully loaded it weighs just a pound, and is quite concealable. One sticky holster is good for the pocket or inside the waistband. The only local range here has 90 different guns one can rent, but none is a 642. They have a Ruger LCR. Would this handle the same as the 642? We've watched the comparo videos on YouTube and one guy says the LCR's shape causes blisters on the web of the shooting hand. Posted by: Mr Gaga at March 23, 2025 08:43 PM 642 is a good choice, but requires some effort and practice to master. The LCR would give him some indication about shooting a DA snub, but a 642 would likely be more comfortable, especially with a Hogue. Most snubs don't let you get your pinky on the grip, and the pinky contributes ~33% to your grip strength, so he'll get an idea of how that will work for him. 125 I stopped doing +P quite a while back. Mostly in an effort to establish some uniformity as to how my firearms behaved. I don't miss it much.
Posted by: Notorious BFD ======== I use it in one place. Self defense snubby loads in a Smith steel framed Model 60. Since I reload, I segregate all the nickel plated 38 SPC cases and use those for the +p as invariably these are from +p self defense loads that I shoot when testing out self defense loads. I don't segregate the +p brass cased from the other generic brass. I do that for two reasons. 1) I create loads that are equivalent in recoil and poi to my self defense load du jour in the snubbie and I always keep some of the +p loaded to the old FBI 158 semi wadcutter hollow point with swaged lead bullets. 2) I see nickel plated brass not in a factory box, I know instantly that it is self defense equivalent reloads and +p to boot. So avoid shooting in old collectibles. Nickel plated brass will crack, usually at the case mouth, before brass will so better to use it sparingly for self defense equivalent training ammo than regular range ammo. My two cents, but I'm pretty sure it won't handle the same way. For revolvers, the grips can make or break the gun in how it feels in the hand. If they're available, I'd try the standard weight S&W J-Frame. The big problem w/ lightweight guns is that the recoil (especially from snubbies) makes them difficult to use and an unpleasant experience to practice with. I'd recommend a 3" or even a 4" barreled revolver over a snubbie for a rookie shooter. If you're determined to roll w/ a snubbie, the Colt Cobra has full sized grips, which are critical to aiming and control of the weapon. They might not be there for a S&W, and definitely not an LCR. Posted by: GWB at March 23, 2025 08:53 PM (QoQrd) Walther has the PPK/S SD which comes with a threaded barrel from the factory in .32 ACP. If you can get a small enough suppressor, it's definitely possible. Posted by: Ed L at March 23, 2025 08:57 PM (AiJK3) 149
Thanks, whig. I'll make sure to bring 9mm +P ammo and NATO spec ammo (if I have them). I'll compare the points of impact for all of them. The drop from point of aim becomes really noticeable at 10 yards, but it's definitely observable at 7 yards.
Posted by: Ed L That is about where it should be noticeable. Shorter than 7 yards, it doesn't matter much. Since I reload 9mm and have pistols regulated for the 115gr and the NATO 124, I have to have two segregated ammo piles which kind of sucks and I also started switching my self defense 9mm over to 147 gr due to its penetration, std. pressure, and lighter recoil impulse. The top 147 gr self defense loads from Winchester and Federal HST lines are very good at the sweet spot of penetration and consistent expansion to meet the 12-18 inch penetration and something like .60+ on expansion. Mr. gaga,
Duncananthrax is giving good advice. If you need a house and yard (or even car gun), consider a 4 inch steel ex cop gun which Smith made a bunch of them. If a carry revolver gun, three inches is the sweet spot of having enough distance between the front and rear sights, plus still concealable, and a bit more weight to add to shootability. If you do pocket carry, you do not want a hammer spur so buy one without it. These are not 25 yard guns (not accuracy so much as sight length and greater recoil). Mechanically a 1 7/8 barrel Smith snubbie is as accurate (leaving aside bullet drop) as a 8 inch barrelled hunting Smith. But, due to recoil and short sight length, most people cannot shoot them nearly as well. Posted by: whig at March 23, 2025 09:02 PM (ctrM5) 157
So here is the situation with Ed Ls M11A1
This is essentially an Sig P229. It shoots about 2 inches below point of aim at 5 yards. I don't think this is a SAAMI pressure thing. I think it needs different sights and I thought I had it figured out but then I think wait no that's wrong. It has XRAY3 sights and I am familiar with #6 and #8 front and rear sights for Sig. I presume they have other numbers I have never seen them. Ed L will have to remind me but I think we figured out he has #8 front and rear and if he puts a #6 on the front which is lower that means the front of the pistol has to come up a bit. I've also switched to 147 gr when carrying 9mm.
It also did well in the infamous Thompson–LaGard animal tests back in the early days of the 20th century. Posted by: Mark Andrew Edwards ======= It is a bit easier on the older 9mm as well and very often shoots close to the existing sights at the range on something like a Browning HP. Ironically it is the reverse in 40 S&W, the lighter and faster going from 165 to about 135 gr are easier to shoot than the original 180 gr. load. Posted by: bill in arkansas Smith aficionados argue about the various hammer spurs as to which is better for single action shooting. Doesn't matter much to me as I always shoot revolvers double action unless testing the single action function and that is also why I never bought any single action revolver. If you carry a double action revolver for self defense, you never want to cock it accidentally from force of habit. Plus, if you do not fire a cocked revolver, it is a pita and somewhat of a safety risk to decock it. Jim Cirrillo of the NYPD recalled in a memoir, he ran into one guy that had tied something around the cocked hammer to keep it from going off. He was carrying this pistol like that on patrol for something like weeks after he cocked it one time and did not know how to safely decock it. There is a reason that cops went to DAO only on revolvers before the Glocks came in. Posted by: whig at March 23, 2025 09:15 PM (ctrM5) 182

Is that a lost fundamental, Weasel? Posted by: GWB If you must, you can shoot a snubbie at a long distance but it definitely takes a lot of range work to do it. Repeating it in an emergency is not something you want to count upon. At greater than 20 yards or something, unless they have a long rifle or a shotgun, it is better to escape and evade anyway. I spent enough time with my model 60 as to be able to trigger cock it but I don't recommend doing that as it can mess up your defense stroke. Simple manual of arms for any firearm is better unless you are willing to put the time in training. I can't right now so simpler is better, I don't carry DA/SA anymore, no classic Sigs with decockers, no Browning HP, and so on. I carry either a revolver, a Springfield XD, or a Smith and Wesson 3rd Generation DAO only. All have basically one trigger stroke to manage and only slide locks/magazines to operate on the XD and 3rd Gen along with slide manipulation. All are factory. I was looking for naysayers to say something about getting the silencer hung up or equivalent barrel length (as MAE mentioned). I was thinking I would need a custom holster (shoulder, vertical carry) to allow for the length. And, the strength at the attachment point of the suppressed. Howdy Jim!
My youngest daughter has had a feeding tube for several years. It has been a great system for her, and she could still get nutrition in - even when she felt like sh*t. Which is very valuable when your body is already fighting other medical issues! Once she got over being self-conscious, she would put the pump in a back-pack and do feedings during class at high school. Weasel has my cell# if you ever want to call me if you have any questions on that system. I have quite a bit of experience as her "tech support". Posted by: Pillage Idiot at March 23, 2025 09:20 PM Try it and see! Posted by: Duncanthrax ------- Pillage, I've used White Out for years on sights. In the range bag for use to make old white three dot sights come alive again or to coat the top of a ramped sight. Nasty bright colored nail polish (the cheap enamel crap at Wally world) also works but get some nail polish remover and clean/degrease before application. Easily removed the same way. If you need it, you can make poor man's night sights with phosphorescent paint. Shine a light on the sights for a time, it glows afterwards for a bit. Hmmm. So in Sig world a #6 front sight is taller than #8. And a #6 rear sight is lower than a #8.
And the recommendations - FROM SIG - seem inconsistent. And depend on caliber. So theoretically a 9mm P229 should be 8 front and rear. Or maybe not. And the general rule is as number goes up your group goes up. So that would mean the gun needs more than #8 to lift the groups up. But also they are zeroed for 25 yards. And there is a chart for what size sight to adjust what amount of elevation. Posted by: blaster at March 23, 2025 09:31 PM (QfvaV) 211

Posted by: ScaryMary ====== It gets weird when a person is trapped in a car and you can end up being on TV and in court like that poor guy caught in a leftie temper tantrum in Austin around the George Floyd unpleasantness.
