Good morning! Gardening weather has arrived in N Texas and the lawn season is upon us. Spent yesterday afternoon mowing, raking, fertilizing and watering the back yard. The grandson helped out too as much as a 5 year old can, so it was a good time.
Probably gonna continue working the back today, cleaning up around the pond and the patio getting the beds, pots and baskets ready for the new stuff. I love this time of year. Posted by: CrotchetyOldJarhead at March 22, 2025 04:17 AM (3Ope8) 3

I enjoy the gardening part. Especially when it pays off with produce. The yard part,,, not so much. I really should go load my front tine tiller in the truck ( not fun for a 70 yr 2 day old light in the backside guy ) bring it home and till up a couple beds. Picked up 50 bare root strawberry plants Thur. On the other hand, what few walleye there are in my home lake, even fewer 18+ in keepers, should be starting to spawn any day now, and the winds are light today for a change, and... Here in the northeastern part of the US we had a taste of spring. But as mother nature always does, she says wait a minute winter isn't done so the little flowers that were happily blooming will be covered with some snow this coming week. Jet stream shift.

TeeJ - the backyard is only about 150x30 and there's an 18x18 pergola in the center with a small pond at one end so the only real 'lawn' to mow is pretty small. I'd love to have raised planters for things like strawberries and veggies.

This is from a book which the people at the church which I serve and mec are studying for Lent- "Give up Something Bad for Lent" by Rev. James W. Moore. Chapter 2-Gave up harsh, condemning judgements for Lent. Rev. Moore includes this tagline, "Lord, make my words tender and sweet today, for I may have to eat them tomorrow." Rev. Moore includes this story: In his book, "Look at the burning bushes", Bidhop Bob Goodrich writes about a schoolmaster some years who demanded strict discipline in his classroom. He required his students to hold their textbooks in their left hands as they stood to recite. Early in the term, one boy stodd holding his book in his right hand. The teacher interrupted with the stern reminder that he should hold the book in his left hand. But the student continued with it in his right hand. The teacher exploded, shouting at him, "You take that book in your left hand right now or suffer the consequences!" "But, sir, I can't, " said the boy. The teacher was so infuriated that he ran to the student screaming at the top of his voice, "Don't you disobey me!" Then be grabbed the boy and began to shake him and pushed him harshly down into his desk. Posted by: FenelonSpoke at March 22, 2025 06:20 AM (42Vb+) 40

Just then an empty sleeve swung into view! The. Boy had no left arm, just an empty sleeve! The teacher was embarrassed. And he stammered out an apology. Two imortant lessons emerge from this dramatic story . First, everyone has an empty sleeve that we cannot see, and if we knew about it, we would be more understanding and less critical . We need to be more sensitive to the empty sleeves hidden away in the lives of people . Second, our harsh condemning judgements boomerang . They come back to haunt us. They reveal far more about us than they reveal about the one we are judging. Why am I sharing this story.? Because I like the book and I need its advice as well. (That's why I'm studying it too), and because I think fconservatives and we on this board need to be kinder to each other . As a fellow poster here says, "Be kind, fellow babies." I won't embarrass my brother in Christ who I think came up with this phrase but I like it. Forgive me if I'm not kind. I will, through God's grace try to do better. We interviewed the fifth of the candidates for my position yesterday. an attractive Puerto Rican lady with almost no accent, she has all the qualifications we need, and is looking "for a life," as she put it. Her current job, commute from the other side of the lake, and her kid use up all of her time and energy. My job, as soon as the office move is over with, would be a lot easier on her.
We have two more last-minute applicants next week. Of course my boss should have moved on this in mid-Feb., when I gave my notice, but Mawdi Graw got in the way. Now even if they hire somebody Wednesday, it could be two weeks more before the winner can sit down at my desk . . . and I'm gonna be gone. At the 32 second mark may want to pause and read the Top Gun homage. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zVq7WoflC6k Posted by: Anna Puma at March 22, 2025 06:36 AM (wNl7U) Heh. At first I was thinking 'where is the homage?' and then just paused it. Posted by: Aetius451AD at March 22, 2025 07:07 AM (bss/y) 85

excerpts:
Jeff Blehar is *BOX OFFICE POISON* retweeted Super 70s Sports @Super70sSports 8h Super Sky Point to the great George Foreman. This one hurts. A kid who arrived on the national scene when he won gold in Mexico City in 1968 and waved American flags. Who became the most feared boxer of his era after destroying Joe Frazier and Ken Norton in a combined four rounds. An invincible force who was outthought and outboxed by an allegedly washed up Muhammad Ali in Zaire in 1974 and who retired three years later, exhausted after another upset loss and changed by the subsequent religious experience that prompted him to retire in his prime. ... Goodbye to Big George, a man who achieved a dream he believed in for two decades - the dream only he thought was possible. A man whose goodness redeemed him from the darkness that prevented him from enjoying his initial fame, fortune, and acclaim. He won so much more in his middle age than that heavyweight crown he prized so much. I never met George Foreman but I loved him. Rest in peace, champ. TechCrunch was part of the failed "Verizon Media Group." In the 2010s, AOL (which owned TechCrunch at the time) established an advertising platform to try to compete with Facebook and Google. Verizon grew interested in this, and purchased AOL, and then purchased Yahoo and stuck them together in a conglomerate they weirdly named "Oath Inc" which was later renamed more sensibly to Verizon Media Group.
The Verizon CEO who did all this left not too long after these purchases were completed and the new CEO was not interested in the ad markets, and quickly decided to sell everything off after it became clear VMG couldn't compete with Google and Facebook. Apollo Global Management then purchased the Frankenstein media conglomerate and renamed it to simply "Yahoo." They haven't really done anything of note since then. I am surprised it took Yahoo this long to finally sell off TechCrunch. I know all this because I was a die-hard user of the old AIM messaging service and I was aggrieved when Verizon shut it down a year or two after the AOL acquisition. For a long time, letting non-technical people program things esp websites has been a sort of holy grail. Coldfusion promised it, the underlying marketing being you didn’t need to hire expensive (qualified) programmers, now anyone can build an maintain a website!
Very, very few people would build a house this way, and no building inspector would let anyone live in it. But somehow software is completely different and doesn’t require any knowledge or expertise or experience? Want to code? Great! Welcome! It’s a lot of work to learn how to do it right.
