Trump Strikes Agreement With Paul, Weiss Law Firm, with Firm Agreeing to End All DEI Practices and Donate $40 Million in Pro Bono Services to Causes Trump Chooses

Hello everyone. I hope you're all doing well.

Paul, Weiss acknowledged the wrongdoing of its former partner Mark Pomerantz, who was a key instigator/plotter of the Alvin Bragg fake charges against Trump in the Stormy Daniels matter.

President Donald Trump has reached a peace deal with a prominent law firm, agreeing to lift a punitive executive order in exchange for concessions that include an agreement to do pro bono work on behalf of conservative causes.
The White House said in a social media post Thursday that it would rescind the executive order Trump imposed March 14 on Paul, Weiss, Rifkind, Wharton & Garrison as part of a broader assault on law firms he viewed as antagonistic.
Paul, Weiss pledged to abandon diversity policies and to provide free legal representation equivalent to $40 million for clients with a "full spectrum of political viewpoints" to include the president's antisemitism taskforce, "fairness in the justice system" and "other mutually agreed projects," according to the post.
Paul, Weiss had no immediate comment but the White House included a statement from the firm's chairman, Brad Karp, in the announcement.
"We are gratified that the President has agreed to withdraw the Executive Order concerning Paul, Weiss," Karp said. "We look forward to an engaged and constructive relationship with the President and his Administration."
The agreement removes the immediate threat to Paul, Weiss from an order that would have sharply limited its ability to interact with government agencies and its access to government contracts -- actions that a federal judge said in a similar case involving another firm appear to violate the Constitution.

I'm worried about the part of the agreement about $40 million for pro bono services for Trump's favored causes. That's not a direct personal benefit, but it is an indirect personal benefit. I think Trump made a mistake in agreeing to that or asking for that.

It feels like a trap to me. A judge will overturn this agreement and use that part of it as proof that Trump is weaponizing government for his own benefit. I wonder if Paul, Weiss offered that themselves, knowing it was a Poisoned Apple that Trump should not take.

Trump issued the executive order to punish Paul, Weiss for its past association with Mark Pomerantz, a former partner who investigated Trump's finances and payments to porn star Stormy Daniels for the Manhattan District Attorney's office. The lawyer ultimately resigned after District Attorney Alvin Bragg chose not to pursue charges.
"The President is agreeing to this action in light of a meeting with Paul, Weiss Chairman, Brad Karp, during which Mr. Karp acknowledged the wrongdoing of former Paul, Weiss partner, Mark Pomerantz, the grave dangers of Weaponization, and the vital need to restore our System of Justice," the White House said in the statement.

I am not sure why. Trump basically donated what would have otherwise been a settlement. They admitted to wrongdoing. I’m sure the agreement with all those lawyers involved is water tight.

The US News ratings are nonsense. Something like 25% of the school's score comes from some secret group of lawyers who rank schools based on how they feel they should be ranked.

But yeah, it's not about quality of education, it's about networking and having the right class markers.

State school law schools use the same books and often same professors as the Top 14 schools. The education itself is the same. Students may (MAY) be slightly smarter at T14 schools, but ultimately it all comes down to the class markers. "Yes, I went to Choate, then Yale then Harvard Law.*" "wow, you're hired."

They're part of a social club for elite judges and lawyers, the DC chapter of something called the Inns of Justice that has chapters all over the country.

He's chummy with Boesberg and obviously has been for a while. It does not mean that they're coordinating anything.

Also, Boesberg's whole thing has gone precisely nowhere (and going to go no further when the government's application for a stay probably gets accepted today or early next week by the appellate court), and focusing on him as a key lynchpin when he's actually a small, ineffectual part of the whole judicial resistance is silly.

It would have been a better strategy to let Trump have the gangland victories on immigration, but do everything to keep it quiet.

Front-loading resistance on immigration here, when the administration's efforts are almost all focused on gang members, is just going to create a deep and wide desensitization towards sob stories on immigration going forward.

Of course, this is after a campaign where Trump promised, many time, to set up the largest mass deportation effort in history, which obviously wouldn't just include gang members.

NY state is on the warpath so they might try to figure out some new wrinkle on lawfare there. I don't think the emoluments clause at the federal level goes anywhere because lawfare group tried that stunt in the first presidency and has now established caselaw precedents making it a very difficult avenue of attack now. Seth Tillman pretty much eviscerated claims that it applies to the president anyway.

Yeah, I know. State schools spend a lot of time on theory, too. Which is fine, in theory; CompSci isn't really a "programming" degree.

The problem is, that's what a lot of people think they're getting. Then they apply for jobs they're unqualified for and I have to tell them they need to start from scratch learning to code.

(They also don't often understand the theory, but that's another matter entirely.)
