22 Evening and morning, early risers and late toilers. 'Tis Friday, the consummation devoutly to be wished!

I went to my former boss's retirement party last night. Good food and people to talk to -- but I stayed a little too late, and got caught by the speeches. They were short, but because of them I didn't get home until after eight p.m.

Well, it's Friday. And cool, 52 F., with little wind. Not too bad.

64 Had my meeting with the retirement account counselor yesterday. He tells me I don't have to take all the funds as an annuity. I could leave, say, 10% behind, take the rest as a monthly payout; then, if I find I need the remainder, I can arrange a second annuity from all or part of that. The difference will be about $80 a month or so -- that is, the little payout would be about $80, adding to the big one.

Is that a worthwhile thing to do? Not really asking for financial advice, just trying to find out if some of you who are retired have done the same, and how it worked out.

Gotcha. I don't have a pension, just IRA/401K, so I can't provide any useful insight. I think a lot of the choice would depend on how your pension works, like does it increase over time for inflation, and how comfortable you are with some risk.

I would search for a fee-based financial planner to review your current assets including your pension, any retirement savings and prospective SS distributions. I am assuming you have a 403b7 or similar investment account based on your posts here. That can, and should be rolled-over to an IRA when you retire. Given your age, I would invest in a high quality balanced mutual fund. At this point, you are seeking some growth but also stability of principle. If you can live off your pension $$ and SS, I would. That could allow your IRA to grow before you need to take any minimum distributions at age 73. Note that I am not a financial advisor - just getting my own house in order for when I officially turn 29.

100 WI would search for a fee-based financial planner to review your current assets including your pension, any retirement savings and prospective SS distributions.
Posted by: Heavy Meta at March 21, 2025

That's just it -- the amount I could roll into an IRA is what provides the pension, the monthly payout. If I don't touch it, I wouldn't have the monthly payout.

I tried to find a financial planner last year, but there are so many advertising, and the one I consulted had no advice for me -- certainly nothing that resembles what you're talking about. I don't know if what I have is a 4037b.

102 You can roll your 401k into an IRA (in my case I had to wait a year) and then draw on it. You can even draw it out early if you are under age 59.5 without penalty. I assume that you are over 59 and a half, so that is not an issue.

103 In my case, I had a Fidelity 401k and I rolled it into a Fidelity IRA.

104 This is TIAA, so I don't know if this is, or is comparable to, a 401K or not. How can I go about finding a financial advisor, though? I've asked, and nobody knows one, or is willing to tell me. Charles Schwab? Somebody else?

It's a little late now. I'm due to head off into the morning light on the 31st, and had been planning on that money every month.

I understand if I roll this over, the principal can continue to grow. But I'm very risk-averse. This would be guaranteed money, every month as long as I live.

Top o ta mornin to ya, gov'nor.

Went to see good friends that moved back to the family farm from Manhattan. That farm was first bought in 1865. They still had a wood cupboard that had traveled by mule-back with the family to the new farm.

But 160 years of continuous improvement, and some original outbuildings , was stunning to see.

After Vietnam, my friend became an artist, and he showed me his studio. He can give the Art thread examples, a lecture, and how to set up a very nice artist production facility. His wife will not pose for him, so he is no twisted Andrew Wyeth.
