Sefton: sefton at cutjibnewsletter.com | THE MORNING RANT: Periodic Roundup of the EV Follies – 3/21/2025The Biden administration awarded Canadian electric bus company Lion Electric nearly $160 million to manufacture hundreds of battery-powered buses for school districts nationwide as part of its sweeping climate agenda. In recent weeks, Lion has initiated bankruptcy proceedings, laid off all employees tasked with building its buses, and paused manufacturing operations. There are dozens of school districts across the country still waiting on delivery of their Lion EV school buses. Lion's financial demise leaves dozens of school districts—including those in California, Montana, North Dakota, Iowa, Alabama, and Maryland—questioning whether they will receive the buses the Biden administration promised them. Lion has yet to deliver $95 million worth of electric buses to 55 districts across the country…The school districts that didn’t take delivery of Lion’s electric buses are actually the lucky ones. The school districts that got hurt the worst are the ones that took delivery of these barely operational abominations. School districts could get a free Lion electric bus through the Biden EPA’s “Clean School Bus Program” for each functioning diesel school bus they disposed of. Now those school districts are without the functioning buses they got rid of, while also stuck with inoperable Lion electric buses. “Maine’s Lion Electric school buses have been a disaster. What’s next?” [CentralMaine.com – 01/27/2025] This woman proudly standing (cackling?) in front of a Lion electric school bus is not the President of the United States, for reasons including her support of “venture socialist” boondoggles like the one that sent taxpayer dollars to Lion Electric for inoperable EV school buses. President Trump’s Environmental Protection Agency began the process Wednesday of rescinding vehicle fuel efficiency standards that Republicans have called a de facto “electric vehicle mandate,” The Post has learned. An administration official said dozens of additional regulatory rollbacks loomed on what would be “the biggest day of deregulation in American history.”This is also why I voted for Trump… “The General Services Administration is shutting down its EV chargers, calling them ‘not mission critical’” [The Verge – 3/11/2025] The General Services Administration (GSA), which manages buildings owned by the federal government, is planning to shut down all of its electric vehicle chargers nationwide, describing them as “not mission critical.” The agency, which manages contracts for the government’s vehicle fleets, is also looking to offload newly purchased EVs.All the “true conservatives” of Conservative, Inc. who were working to defeat Donald Trump were also therefore working to perpetuate the EV mandates and keep taxpayer subsidies flowing to the EV hustlers.

WASHINGTON (AP) — Energy Secretary Jennifer Granholm has sold her ownership interest in an electric bus maker that President Joe Biden touted during a “virtual visit” last month. A spokesman said Granholm sold her holdings in California-based Proterra Inc. this week, clearing a net gain of $1.6 million. The sale fulfills Granholm’s obligations under an ethics agreement three months before an August deadline, the Energy Department said. Proterra died later that year. Yet the ford CEO still has his job probably received some huge bonuses for killing ford. Posted by: Jukin the Deplorable ============ Yep. Basically, EVs may have killed Ford Motor Company as they shot themselves in the head over it financially. Because boards and CEOs can do awful shit with other people's money, it indicates that there is an awful principal-agent problem in modern corporations that needs fixing. Mebbe something like board members and executive suite officers that make disastrous decisions like this should have 90 percent of their direct financial payments clawed back to the date of those disastrous decisions. Right now, none of those directors nor the executive suite has skin in the game. So they float from disaster to disaster just like government. In addition, I think you are going to have to strip voting rights (require opt in from fund participants) from the big State Streets, Blackrock, Vanguard funds. They are the real villains denuding companies of value like Ford along with the federal government. Posted by: whig at March 21, 2025 11:11 AM (ctrM5) 32

Ford SVT used to mean something. I had a 1998 Cobra Convertible and loved it.
Anyway, it's an odd confluence of events here. Natural demand for EVs has always been pretty close to zero. Tesla comes along (as mentioned, niche) and I think a fair number of consumers said they *liked* the idea of an EV, which was amplified by the greenies in the US government and sent out a seriously flawed demand signal to automakers. It takes a fair amount of time to get a car from a drawing to production, and I think what sounded like a fairly reasonable car that would sell at the time ended up being inferior to alternatives. Turns out the people who said they liked the idea of the EV...weren't actually buying them, or if they were it was because of government subsidies. My training in Economics tells me that if a product requires a subsidy to build, then a subsidy to purchase, it's really going to be a crap product no one really wants on the merits. Since the book "Economics" came up yesterday, I'll conclude with the observation made in that book that when you start messing with the principal agent in an economic system, all sorts of downstream effects happen. In this case...we see it. Posted by: WitchDoktor at March 21, 2025 11:18 AM (PzXaK) 62
The entire huge push for every car company going to EVs was based on the expectation of gigantic subsidies from the government. Subsidies that are not realistic to expect now. The EV market is poor to begin with but overflooding it with 5 times as many cars as it will bear is just ridiculous.
None of those state goals like California saying no sales of any cars but EV by some future date will survive reality. All those predictions of the future being EVs as gas powered cars vanish are as true and rational as Krugman declaring the internet a "passing fad" Posted by: Christopher R Taylor at March 21, 2025 11:18 AM (2VST1) 63

There's always going to be a small market for EVs. If I were a part time Uber driver for instance, or had a job I had to drive to and back every day as a second car. But both would require me to be wealthy to afford an EV to begin with.

Posted by: Christopher R Taylor UPS has converted to compressed natural gas (CNG) as well. It has been and actually is also fairly easy to convert standard IC engines into propane operation. Don't think it is much more complicated to do so with CNG. But, you have to have a compressor attached to nat gas pipeline to do that which is fairly expensive. Easier for individuals to use propane. Father had several farm vehicles, that were seldom used, converted to that in the 70's. Less problem with sludge from old gas screwing up the engines and they would run fine on propane even if not run for six months or so. Same reason I prefer running generators off of propane despite the slight decline in energy output. Worse for natgas hookups compared with propane and not functional as a portable. I think the EV was/is designed for those 15 minute cities the WEF and other globalists want to shove everyone into. For one, you'd never need anything else unless you were traveling to another of those 15 minute cities.
In that case, there'd be public transportation available. And it would be available only if you had the proper level of social credit. EV's limited range is a feature, not a bug. Should we be encouraging everyone to go out and buy an EV because they are good for the environment? Teslas even?
No. I’m not encouraging anyone to spend money in this economy. I doubt they're any better for the environment as a whole. If you want to do better for the environment expand mass transit and stop treating it as a makeshift homeless shelter and mental ward. The adverse effects of EVs are shifted to lithium mining and electric production on the grid. Enriching Musk is good for the environment? How is the EPA doing under DOGE? The BLM? EV, yes. All things Musk, no. Mass transit, best of all. EVs aren't to save the planet. They’re to save the automobile industry. No! We ought to be turning our cities into attractive affordable places where car ownership is unnecessary. Cars are bad for the environment no matter what powers them. It's not just the cars, it's all the infrastructure required to support them to. What sort of "freedom" is it to live in a nation where we are forced to own automobiles? I resent the fact that I must own an automobile to be considered a fully functional adult in this society. Toyota has been playing around with that tech for decades with little to show for it other than demo vehicles. There is an easy and abundant less polluting fuel just waiting which is CNG but the net zero climate cultists hate anything to do with carbon. FWIW, if you feed methanol, etc. into fuel cells, they actually work pretty well except they release some small amount of carbon. But, you do not get combustion gasses like NOx etc. which you do if you burn CNG and those combustion gasses are treated as EPA pollutants. Posted by: whig at March 21, 2025 11:36 AM (ctrM5) 141

Anarchist protest toolkits “created and used” by “Beautiful Trouble” and cohorts including Lisa Fithian, “a lifelong advocate for violent protests, abolishing the police, dismantling the state [and who] guided Columbia University students to break into its building” were shared on USIP’s website as models for “change” and “peace.” Posted by: SMOD at March 21, 2025 11:38 AM (RHGPo) 150

One national standard is arguably better than 50 state ones.
While I don't disagree in principle, the way the EPA works right now is flat out unconstitutional. IF they had a policy of only dealing with cross-state or border environmental issues, there might be a basis for it. But again I fear that mission creep would lead to abuse of power in short order. For example, the EPA started with oceans and rivers, stuff like that. The Columbia River goes through two states. The Mississippi through 32 states (more, if you properly consider it the Missouri river). So the EPA said "OK this river is multi-state, which makes it federal, so we can regulate issues involving this river in its interstate effects." Then they said "since we can regulate the river, we also have to regulate the tributaries and streams that feed INTO the river". Then they said "ALL WATER IN EVERY STATE eventually leads to rivers and oceans, so we can regulate how you dig wells in your back yard." The feds have to be watched like a raging fire. I'm starting to wonder whether these losses are real losses, or on-paper fake losses. Or maybe some of both. In the same way that Hollywood movies can gross a billion dollars but somehow barely break even, I'm sure there's lots of fake accounting going on at Ford to show huge losses for tax purposes, and to try to gin up a yuge bailout (which won't happen under Trump).
Posted by: Elric Blade ======== Real. Ford spent a lot of money (and TN taxpayer money) on an EV plant around Memphis TN that will never open. R&D funds spent to electrify while ignoring the IC engines. EVs that cannot be sold at a profit recovering the labor, parts, and capital investment that Ford put into them. And so on. Posted by: whig at March 21, 2025 11:14 AM (ctrM5) == Even more critical is they stood down ICE vehicle engineering support to ramp up EV engineering support. They no longer have the engineering support to support their ICE vehicles, and the standard F150 has had some problems as a result. They have a bunch of EV engineers they no longer need. And the ICE engineers are gone. Ford is truly fucked. It's an asteroid moment. Posted by: Black JEM at March 21, 2025 11:50 AM (GZYu7) 228
To that point, Mr. CBD sent me this quote: ”Imagine we lived in a world where all cars were EVs, and then along comes a new invention, the ‘internal combustion engine!’ Think how well that would sell: A vehicle half the weight, half the price that will almost quarter the damage done to the road. A vehicle that can be refueled in 1/10th of the time and has a range of up to 4 times the distance in all weather conditions. It does not rely on the environmentally damaging use of non-renewable rare earth elements to power it, and it uses far less steel and other materials. Just think how excited people would be for such technology. It would sell like hotcakes.”
We actually had that world. Before the advent of the ICE, Prime thought that the horseless carriages would be electric. Edison was actually working on that when Henry Ford - who worked for Edison at the time - was working on his own ICE. Edison liked the idea, and encouraged Ford to keep at it. The War of 1812 had several causes but the main ones were these:
British decided that the seas belonged to them, and they could do pretty much whatever they damned well pleased at sea, especially because they had to survive against the French. They further decided that any sailor on any ship that spoke English was probably an English deserter, especially if they had any tattoos that depicted any English ship. So they would routinely stop all US ships and search them for "deserters" and take whoever they damned well pleased, unless they had documentation proving they were US Citizens... and sometimes even if they did. The other main cause (related) was that the British were really pissed off that American ships were neutral, and could take supplies into French harbors without interference, doing trade with the French through blockades etc. So they had a personal grudge that made them want to stop US ships and search them for deserters. Most of England was pretty sympathetic toward the US, hating pressing sailors and not pleased with the treatment of the Navy toward Yanks. Much of the NE US didn't want the war because it resulted in blockades of Boston and New York, etc. Posted by: Christopher R Taylor at March 21, 2025 11:54 AM (2VST1) 246

The most frustrating thing for me about the EV push was that it sucked all the oxygen out of the room for every other experimental technology like hydrogen. Electric Cars are very, very old technology, every bit as old as Internal Combustion. But... not nearly as advanced or high tech. Its better than it was in 1917, but nothing remotely like how gas powered cars have advanced.

Posted by: rickb223 Actually nope. Commerce clause is the least controversial of any of the powers of the national government from the Founding. Simply put, even the NJ plan at the Convention had a version of the Supremacy clause and the Confederate Constitution actually had a stronger one in it. One of the reasons that the Articles of Confederation failed is you had to have unanimous approval for changing it and with no national enforcement mechanism other than kicking out an asshole state or making war on it, the Articles had no way to prevent states screwing others and their citizens, or usurping federal powers (as in foreign affairs) etc in direct violation of Articles. Rhode Island's behavior was especially egregious but many states happily screwed others by setting up mini borders to 'inspect, tax, etc.' commerce going through it bound for other states. Re travel, rivers, air, or power, cross state lines and that means federal supremacy clause applies even under a stricter std. prior to Jones and Laughlin Steel v. NLRB. When cars were starting out there were three competing ideas and technologies:
1) Internal Combustion: which had the advantages of easy to fuel and good power and range, but the drawbacks of being really flammable and messy, dirty, and smelly. 2) Steam: had the advantage of a ton of power and water is dirt cheap. But the drawbacks are that it takes a long time to build up a head of steam to get going, and sometimes explode. 3) Electric: had the advantage of decent power and it was both quiet and clean (something women especially liked), but drawbacks of being short range, somewhat dangerous with lead acid batteries, and slow refueling. ICE won because they perfected the carburetor and it just was a better overall option. But the EV is freaking ancient and failed. The 9th is one of those amendments that the Supreme Court has never embraced which is a shame. US has a rich history of individual rights derived from common law that have simply been ignored or swept aside. Like the privileges and immunities clauses in the Constitution and 14th amendment, this was a far better ground to argue that Americans have ancient common law rights individually far beyond the enumerated ones in the Bill of Rights. Going back to the Magna Carta in some cases. Among those, rejected by Scotus in Slaughterhouse Cases, would be a right to engage in an occupation, and so on.

So, those are state powers under the 10th Amendment aka police powers for the health, safety, and welfare of students. The only thing granting power to the Feds in education is that Congress has the spending power to bribe states to follow its rules. Nothing more. Any state could have walked away from the roughly 10 percent of their budgets from the Fed and ignored Fed rules. FWIW, back when I spent time in classes in public administration, one of the issues involved in a comparative sense is that some issues are better addressed at the local level, some at some subnational level, and others at the national level.
One example was education. States and even localities within states are better equipped to figure out what their students need to learn and by pushing those decisions to the local level allows parents and students more power than they would if nationalized. Another was economic development which was better handled at the state and local level due to superior knowledge of workforces, fit with existing infrastructure, and so on. Defense, however, works better at the national level than state or local. And so on. Posted by: whig at March 21, 2025 12:28 PM (ctrM5) 331

This is what happens when government decide our technological future.
Make EVs better and cheaper and they will find their niche. That is the real problem - EVs are still not good enough. Posted by: El Mariachi at March 21, 2025 12:59 PM (ZBykU) 336
GSA: This year’s conference set a new record with over 2,600 registered attendees joining the annual immersive, multi-day event. The conference kicked off with a keynote panel featuring GSA’s Senior Advisor to the Administrator, Climate, Jetta Wong; Federal Chief Sustainability Officer Andrew Mayock; and GSA Public Buildings Service Commissioner Elliot Doomes.
The group discussed the importance of EVSE infrastructure and how fleet managers have access to resources to help their agencies meet their fleet goals. In fact, in FY23, GSA ordered over 5,800 zero-emission vehicles for our federal agency partners – an increase of 63% from FY 2022. So far in FY24, almost 4,000 ZEVs have been ordered – about 20% of all vehicle orders and almost 30% of all light-duty vehicle orders. Over the three-day conference, there were 44 training sessions with topics ranging from electrification and new vehicle offerings to deep dives into policy, best practices surrounding aspects of fleet management, and industry and vehicle manufacturer panels. ---- Meanwhile, they sat as everyone worked from home...unless traveling and partying. And it's all just ducky with the agencies, Judges, Congress. Posted by: L - No nic, another fine day at March 21, 2025 02:05 PM (NFX2v) 337

The tragic thing about Ford is that when the Great Recession hit in 2008, they were the solvent of the Big Three. How far have they fallen.
