When you look at it objectively the Left’s and Right’s protest movements are nearly identical. The Left tries to kill their opponents and destroy their property while the Right calls Bud Light drinkers “homos”.

14 Does anybody use Windows Defender? My Win 10 machine is still running fine but the McAffee A/V expires next week. I don't feel like renewing it since Win10 stops updating in Oct. At that point, I put Linux on it. In the mean time, I was going to use Windows Defender. I've never used it.

-

Yes, without hesitation. It's pathetic that Windows makes a better / less intrusive / less bloated product than Norton, McAffee, etc. now.

If you're going to pay for anything pay for Malwarebytes. Run it and Defender and you're ahead of the game.

20 FWIW you can install Windows 11 and it will just have an "activate now" almost invisible nag box down at the bottom right that doesn't affect anything and isn't clickable. You can run it that way indefinitely.

There are lots of Windows 11 keys on Stacksocial for $20-30, too. I've used a half dozen or so without issue. I've also had a machine running without activation for a year or more just to see what it would do. So far nothing except run fine.

Posted by: Boron Cobbie - What different discussions are 53 and 21 year old women having? at March 20, 2025 04:52 AM (qSMcm)

21 Just to add:

I'm a Linux fan (and an even bigger Tails fan) but there are probably going to be scenarios where you need to return to the Windows fold for certain things. It's not a bad idea to have a cheap 256GB SSD with it loaded up that you can either keep installed and boot Linux from a USB before Windows boots, or get familiar with how to swap the hard drives out.

23 Evening and morning, all,

I'm up later than usual because I have a long day. Got a retirement party for my former boss to go to. It starts some 90 minutes after my usual going-home time, so I'll have to kill more than an hour at my desk. Wish I could nap. Oh, well, I'll be able to get home before eight p.m.

Temp is 62 now, going up to a dizzying 65 this p.m., so at least the weather is cool.

I bought four 5-port 2.5Gbit Qnap network switches today because I need to upgrade from gigabit and these were 70% off. In theory it shouldn't be possible to screw up the security on an unmanaged switch since they don't have any security. We'll see how it goes.

Something I've been shocked to see is how Nvidia cards have skyrocketed.

Not the new 5000 series. That's to be expected. The new releases have been nuts for the last 10 years or so.

But right now the old 3060s are selling for the same as new 4060s last year, and 4060TIs are $100 more than they were last year. Not even the 16GB models, which would at least make SOME sense. Just the plain old boring 8GB bog-standard "buy this lowest passable quality product that will perform adequately but will make you want an upgrade pretty soon" level one.

In theory. This is Qnap we're talking about here. Just make sure your firewall is set up to reject any outbound traffic to the world, or any inbound traffic to the firewall itself from any unrecognized MAC addresses that suddenly appear on your network.

btw, that retarded imbecile fake "critic" shill Grace Randolph avoided reviewing Snow White. I believe she did this to see which way the wind was going to blow.

135 Why I'm no longer talking to architects about microservices.

A lot to agree with in that article. Every industry has its cargo cultists and people who discover a word that the cool kids use then try to apply it to their own ideas.

Lets say that there were domains within the enterprise that could benefit from µArchitecture, the "cognitive load" is really on the software directors and VPs who don't want to have some teams building monoliths, others µArch, and others using virtual actors, because too hard for compartmentalization, integration or developers who are résumé building and hop from team to team playing with different methodoligies.

µArchitecture is expensive and should be considered a potential tool, not an end.

Besides, Harry Sissy risks being cancelled, and what will he do if he can't be a top twinkie for the Democrats? Don a paper hat and ask if you want fries with that? He probably can't even do that without the customer wanting to punch his very punchable face.

149 The 9070 XT is mostly out of stock but the base 9070 module seems to be in good supply, with even overclocked models available at or close to MSRP.

Taking a quick look on Amazon:

No direct sale for 9070, all are Marketplace sellers scalping well above MSRP.

I see exactly one model of the 9070 XT for sale, the PowerColor Reaper at $1098.95.
So double the MSRP.

Newegg seems to only have the new GPUs for sale, but they’re all in pre-built systems.
I don’t think Best Buy and MicroCenter are any different.

I’ve heard on YouTube that AMD has stock left around the world but not in the U.S.

I’m also hearing that AMD will resupply sometime in April.

It’s starting to look like 2020 all over again for the consumer GPU market.

151 Don, that “prophecy” is dated from 1978 so, nothing compelling there.

Now, there WAS a radio or SIGINT type guy who went AWOL in 1963, tried to claim asylum at the Swiss embassy or something like that, who claimed there was a plot to kill Kennedy that he had unearthed through some sort of spook clandestine code or somesuch. That really happened, and is pretty strange. Look into that one.

157 >But when you look more closely, things get even worse.

The problem is that Github was designed by and for open source zealots, and its design is thoroughly unsuitable for enterprise closed-source development. Microsoft tried to sunset Azure DevOps in favour of Github, realized it was impossible to get Github to be enterprise ready, and is now supporting two DevOps suites, neither of which are a good choice for enterprise closed-source (either due to a complete lack of support or a blazing hatred of the entire concept of intellectual property).
