Hidden Mother Cafe

A whole series of weird, creepy "hidden mother" photographs.

Hidden mother photography is a genre of photography common in the Victorian era in which young children were photographed with their mother present but hidden in the photograph. It arose from the need to keep children still while the photograph was taken due to the long exposure times of early cameras.
The daguerreotypes that became publicly available during the 1840s had exposure times from tens of seconds to several minutes. While exposure times shrank as photographic technology developed, to get a clear picture of a child during the 19th century the child had to be persuaded to stay still, which could be difficult to achieve. One technique was for the mother--or sometimes the father, a nanny or the photographer's assistant--to be hidden within the frame, often behind curtains, under cloaks, or disguised as chairs. Mothers were also sometimes obscured simply by removing parts of the photograph afterward, or by them standing slightly off to one side so they could be cropped out. How successfully the mother was hidden varied. Sometimes, simply draped with fabric, their shape would be obvious. In some photographs, arms are clearly visible. A paper overlay could be used when framing the photograph to hide the parts showing the mother, focusing on the child instead The practice of hidden mother photography continued into the 1920s, fading away as cameras became more ubiquitous and exposure times became faster, rendering need to hold small children rigidly still no longer necessary.

It doesn't say why the mother had to be covered. I imagine the baby would keep turning to look at the mother, if it saw the mother, so they hid her under a carpet.

Capybaras are even cuter as babies because of course they are.

Pigeon has discovered a new way of hoarding food. Might make it hard to fly away with his haul, though.

You ever see an action movie and the hero is "hidden" up on the ceiling but the ceiling isn't that high and you're like, "There's no way if someone walked into that room he wouldn't naturally just see the guy perched on the ceiling. You just see it. Your cone of vision extends upwards, too."

That always bothers me. But this cat suggests that maybe it's real.

Near the
end there are a couple minutes of kids exiting a school and hanging out in the playground. It is the Mark Sheridan school in Bridgeport section of the city and the building still exists.

Exposure time is also why they took photos of the recently-deceased, according to a Hollywood documentary I saw starring Nicole Kidman. It was actually easier to kill the subjects you were photographing, take your photos, then resurrect them than have people sit still for half an hour.

It does, but your focus is not on everything you can see all at once. Its like studies they've done on gun battles where you focus so much on your target you can miss things right next to them, like... another dude with a gun.

There's a famous dude who made picture books with kittens, in costumes making little scenes. The clothes were hand made to clano the kittens stay in the position and they tried to work when kittens were kinda sleepy.

The assistants would sometimes hold the kitten up in the pose behind a black curtain, and they worked on the more sunny days.

It reminds me of that Far Side cartoon where all the "sheep" have visible seams on their necks and a couple of wolves with their heads out of their sheep costumes are saying "Say, is anyone here a real sheep?"

A lot has to do with where you are. Say if you're in Pock-ee-stahn you'd pronounce Cooba different than if you were on Your-in-us.

I am more sympathetic to the practice in WWI in England to isolate into a single picture or add to another group picture the image of a soldier in uniform who had been killed. The hoaxer of the Cottingly Fairies did some of that work a little later, though she didn't need it for the hoax. I am not good with names, and when I was a senior in high schools some of the younger kids joined the gaming club, and I couldn't remember who they were. So I gave them nicknames. One kid in particular I struggled with, and so he was The Kid Whose Name I Don't Know.

It stuck. Like everyone else know his name, but when they said it, I'd be "Who is that?"

When was the last time a party got smoked and then lost the media that protected them and the bureaucracy that funded them and helped rig elections for them? They are freaking out about Trump and Elon ripping apart the bureaucracy because that's their base of power.

2024 was not a normal election. They spent years doing nothing but trying to destroy us. They didn't run anything well while they were in charge because they didn't think they had to. They thought they would win forever because they owned ever lever of power in government and out. And now it's all falling apart. Even the states where they have power are falling apart.

The corrupt judiciary is all they have left and that's not enough. They might limp along for a while as a regional power but rage and violence is not a path to national power. I don't see any path out of this for them.

All joking aside, I like to meet people where they are and help them with modifications as they build strength or maybe even modify forever if they have an issue needing it. I have been able to challenge those who need it, and handhold those who need it all in the same class pretty successfully. This particular case was just so abrupt and loud and funny. It’s never happened before! I have had people say it’s not for them, which is fair, or just not come back. The entire class was like okay…that happened, and all I could do was pick it up on the next 8 block and keep going!

I absolutely believe there are jobs they should not so...artillery crewman, tank crewman, combat engineer. Jobs that require a lot of heavy lifting won't work. But everything else, Ive no problem with it.
