St. Patty's Day 2025 Overnight Open Thread [Doof]

doof-Green-Beer.jpg

Howdy to all ye Hordeluns, and a Happy St. Patty's Day to ya! If yas aint drunk yet, we'll try to fix that for ya. Step inside the O'EnnTee - but watch out for pinchin' if ya don't has any green on ya!

Saturday Night St. Patty's Day Joke

A man stumbles up to the only other patron in the pub and asks if he could buy him a drink. “Why of course,” comes the reply. The first man then asks “Where are you from?” “I’m from Ireland,” replies the second man. The first man responds “You don’t say, I’m from Ireland too! Let’s have another round to Ireland.” “Naturally,” replies the second man. Curious, the first man then asks “Where in Ireland are you from?” “Dublin,” comes the reply. “I can’t believe it,” says the first man. “I’m from Dublin too! Let’s have another drink to Dublin.” “Of course,” replies the second man. Curiosity again strikes and the first man asks “What school did you go to?” “Saint Mary’s,” replies the second man. “I graduated in ’67.” “This is unbelievable!” the first man says. “I went to Saint Mary’s and also I graduated in ’67!” About that time, in comes one of the regulars and sits down at the bar. “What’s been going on?” he asks the bartender. “Nothing much,” replies the bartender. “Just the O’Malley twins are drunk again.”

Bonus joke from The Gipper

OK - one more!

Flynn was reminiscing about the first time he took his son Paddy out for a drink. They went to the local pub, which is only two blocks from their home. Flynn got him a Guinness. Paddy didn't like it - so Flynn drank it. Then Flynn got him a Smithwick's, Paddy didn't like it either, so Flynn drank it. It was the same with the Harp and the Murphy's. By the time they got through the Irish whiskey, Flynn could hardly push the stroller back home.

St. Patrick's Day Traditions

Chicago is well known for its tradition of dying the river green

doof-chicagoriver.jpg

Here are some other Unusual St. Patrick’s Day Traditions Around The World

Strange St. Patrick’s Day Traditions In The United States

1. New London, Wisconsin
In New London, leprechauns crawl around the city and change all the signs to “New Dublin” for the day — even on the highway.

2. Portland, Maine
Talk about a rude awakening: the Paddy’s Day Plunge of Portland, Maine, involves jumping into the freezing Atlantic Ocean at 5:30 a.m.

***

5. Hot Springs, Arkansas
Hot Springs is the home of the world’s shortest St. Patrick’s Day Parade, which takes place on “The Shortest Street in Everyday Use in the World,” as it was named by Ripley’s Believe It Or Not in the 1940s. Bridge Street, which is only 98 feet long, hosts the hour-long parade, which includes Elvis impersonators, a Blarney Stone kissing contest and various other performances.

Unusual St. Patrick’s Day Traditions In The Rest Of The World

6. Montserrat
This Caribbean island, home to a sizable Irish Catholic population since the 17th century, is the only place in the world outside of Ireland where St. Patrick’s Day is a public holiday.

***

9. International Space Station
How “international” are we talking here? Because apparently, St. Patrick’s Day isn’t only earthbound. In 2013, a Canadian astronaut wore green, took a photo of Ireland from space and posted a video of him singing “Danny Boy.”

29 An American, a Russian, and an Irishman were out at the pub in London. The Russian sneers and says that in Russia, Vodka is so cheap they only have to pay 2 Rubles a bottle.

The American snorts and says that in Wisconsin, good beer is so cheap it's only a dollar a bottle. They both look at the Irishman.

The Irishman says he's not sure about that, but in Ireland, whiskey is so good that they pay you to drink it and not only that, he said, they'll even get you laid as part of the bargain!

The Russian and American cannot believe it.

"You get all the whiskey and sex you want and they pay you for it? Have you ever had this happen yourself?" the American demands.

"Well no," the Irishman says. "But it happens for my sister all the time!"

41 When I went to college, i received a bouquet of 24 roses on St Patrick's day, with a card that read, "We're sorry you're not Irish." No name on the card, by the way. For the next five years, I received two dozen roses every St. Patrick's day, with the same card, covering undergrad and grad school.

It wasn't until I was married and home from overseas for a complicated pregnancy that my mom told me she and my dad did that, because... "I wasn't Irish and would never properly celebrate St. Patrick's day."

Mom and Dad were teetotaling Southern Baptists, so I have no idea why they thought up this rather epic troll.

Years ago got tickets to see The Pogues at the Roseland Ballroom on St Patty's Day which was a Friday night. On Wed I was in court with another attorney who was going to see them Thurs. He said Shane McGowan fell off the stage last night in Boston and broke his knee. He figured the shows would be cancelled and Friday morning he came in and said the Thursday show was cancelled, but there was nothing on the website about Friday. Three friends and I got a limo drove to NYC. The Pogues came on stage pushing Shane out in a wheelchair with a big cup of whiskey in the cup holder. They blew the place away. Told my friend when I saw him Monday and he was pissed

Trump confirmed Montana Sen. Tim Sheehy; Sean Spicer; Rep. Ronny Jackson (R-Texas); and Walt Nauta, to sit on the Naval Academy’s board of visitors.

The boards are effectively advisory panels and can weigh in on curriculum, teaching, finances and other matters, with members nominated by Congress and the president.

Oh, and our elderly kitty seems to like the new digs. Did really well on the ten hour drive.

O’Glub has a fancy curly one. O'Glub should work, if copy-paste doesn't change it for a curly one.

145 An Irishman's been drinking at a pub all night. When he stands up to leave, he falls flat on his face. He tries to stand one more time, but to no avail. Again, he falls flat on his face. He figures he'll crawl outside and get some fresh air and maybe that will sober him up. Once outside, he stands up and, sure enough, he falls flat on his face. The Irishman decides to crawl the two blocks to his house.

When he arrives at the door, he stands up and falls flat on his face. He manages to crawl through the door and up the stairs into his bedroom. When he reaches his bed, he tries one more time to stand up. This time, he pulls himself upright but he quickly falls right into bed. He is sound asleep as soon as his head hits the pillow.

He awakens the next morning to his wife standing over him, "So, you've been out drinking again!"

"Why do you say that?" he asks innocently.

"Mick at the pub called. You left your wheelchair there again."

171 Apparently, the last invasion of Britain happened at Bristol when a small French diversionary force of regular soldiers and convicts landed there to distract the British while the French invaded Ireland.

The invasion of Ireland was called off but the Black Legion did land and was soundly defeated by a capable British woman named Jemimah and a scratch British force.

The leader of this Black Legion was an Irish American who hated the British.

After a while, I had a revelation: the Irish use music as part of their war against Britain. A good half of the Wolftones' repertoire is anti British. A lot of the Clancy Brothers and Tommy Makem are anti British. Name any prominent Irish group and they have anti British songs. (Real groups, not made up ones like Irish Women and Celtic Storm.)

Irishman's First Drink With His Son
===========================
While reading an article last night about fathers and sons, memories came flooding back to the time I took me son out for his first pint. Off we went to our local pub only two blocks from the cottage. I got him a Guinness. He didn't like it, so I drank it.

Then I got him a Kilkenny's, he didn't like that either, so I drank it.

Finally, I thought he might like some Harp Lager? He didn't. I drank it.

I thought maybe he'd like whiskey better than beer so I tried a Tullamore Dew. Nope!

In desperation, I had him try that rare Redbreast, Ireland's finest. He wouldn't even smell it.

What could I do but drink it?

By the time I realized he just didn't like to drink, I was so freakin' shit-faced I could hardly push his stroller back home!

--------------

Was at The Gym last weekend and while on the rowing machine for an hour, a TV was showing an Me.TV old episode (before my time, but I'd heard about it) of "Wagon Train."

Surprisingly, at the end, after a young mid-20s woman seduces a 17-year-old cowboy for an ulterior motive -- they both get a good spanking over the knee by the wagon train boss.

I thought: "there's no way that an old man spanking a young woman over his knee" could ever be depicted today.

The odd thing though is Amaranth comes from an edible plant.

Of course either way...why the hell do we so broadly dye food anyway? I doesn't affect the taste or smell. I remember when there were no red M&Ms and...they were just as enjoyable as now.

222 Most of Tesla’s $7.1 billion in net income last year doesn’t even derive from selling electric vehicles, solar panels or battery storage. Some $2.8 billion came from the sale of regulatory credits to other auto makers that need to comply with government EV mandates. As EV mandates have increased, so have Tesla’s profits from such credit sales.

Tesla made another $1.6 billion in interest income on cash and short-term investment holdings. Democrats can thank the Biden inflation for allowing companies to earn higher interest on their cash holdings. In addition, Tesla recorded nearly $600 million in book income from price appreciation in its bitcoin holdings, but this is akin to an unrealized capital gain.

228 An interesting comment I just read on a youtube video:

I once had a Pentagon historian tell me that "we don't know" is never good enough for companies or the government, and that "if I were honest", then I'd just go with the predominant hypothesis, even if it's wrong, rather than say that we simply don't know. That helped me to confirm that we are led by the least of us. Nature rewards "doing human" - not being honest and factual. According to our betters, the intellect is only there to serve the will. It's only to be used to get you what you want - so long as what you want is not merely "truth" in the abstract.

Said the ladies that worked there would take cellophane tape and stick it on the suits that came back from the moon and give them away to friends and such.

276 Yeah, about that. Last year they told us we had to get Real ID before December, because they wouldn't accept any other ID after the first of the year.

Turns out, they keep pushing it back because too many people decided not to bother doing it.

And illegals fly all the time without it - they are exempt from that "rule".

I've read that the May deadline isn't hard and fast either...TSA is going to "start enforcement" then but they are being vague about what that actually means. It's very possible that for some period of time they will let people with noncompliant IDs through with a warning. Because they know that despite all the delays there will be absolute chaos at airports if they bar noncompliant people from flights.
