Hello, everyone. Since the Horde is the greatest collection of intelligence in the cosmos, I have a question. It regards electricity.
I live in an apartment on the 99th floor of my block. And lately, my electricity just pops off. KER-Bang. I have to go to the bathroom and punch the button-thing and it all comes back online.
Since my computer, with its various graphics and such, is on that circuit, this presents a dilemma. If I am editing a graphic, and the power goes off, this is considered not good.
Last time this happened, several years ago, the maintenance folks said this was due to something I had that was "messing" with the, shall we say, "electrical flow." And it indeed turned out to be an old UPS that just couldn't adjust.
Now, it is happening again. Lots of times. I've put in a maintenance request, but I will bet several dimes that they will say the same thing.
So, ultimately, my question is, how can I determine which (if any) of my "electrically dependent" devices might be the problem? What equipment should I get? Meters? Plugs?
I apologize for my ignorance in these matters, which should be plainly known by all.

That's a tripping GFCI. It could be a bad GFCI unit, or an actual ground fault, a "leak" of current to ground, which it detects. If you can figure out what's on the circuit, trying unplugging it all, and seeing if any such thing is the cause.
It can also be wiring faults at receptacle. These GFCIs can be quite sensitive. Just a few mA of leakage current will trip them. If some wires, even neutral to ground "near faults" caused by wires mashed together, or rubbing and wearing insulation can do it.

I think I was just too old or out of touch to appreciate Fallon's skits. I watched a bit of Kimmel for awhile, but then Trump won in 2016 and Kimmel went insane and all the comedy seemed to disappear from most of those shows.

Now I would have paid money to be in his military unit, I guess he was in the Marines. I guarantee he was a riot almost every day, and probably got in a lot of trouble. Unplug appliances, one at a time, and see if the outages cease. I would cast a particularly jaundiced eye at any devices that contain heating elements that cycle on and off, like coffee makers.
Computer power supplies, themselves, can do this on their own, if a capacitor within them, or on the motherboard starts breaking down. I have experienced this.

Carlin was great, and could play it straight when he wanted. In later years he must have been clinically depressed, and bitter. Maybe an occupational hazard. I thought Kramer made Seinfeld, or at least approaching half. He is another that takes humor very seriously, if that makes sense. Historically speaking, he studied all the old school guys, who learned how to comically fall down stairs and not damage their bodies too badly.

I'd just add one more item to those above about David Letterman - in addition to the gags and stunts, there was another feature to his comedy: he set out quite deliberately to subvert everything about the traditional talk show, and he wasn't afraid to go in some rather dark directions to do so. Letterman wanted to do the talk show from Hell, and he pulled it off.
Conan O'Brian deserves mention as well - his mix of the whimsical with the nonesensical was a treat to see, and I'm still not sure how he got away with it. Anyone remember a certain bear that was a recurring feature of Conan's show.
Finally, Stella - the Three Stooges meet Dadaism. Their raking leaves sketch is the perfect illustration of what unrecognized geniuses they were.

I think there's suspicion that they had a pretty good idea what the little Communist was up to and didn't do anything to stop him. That was not my read. I think he’s plugged his computer in in another room and it’s tripping the GFCI, probably because some idiot wired the outlets inline and so the downstream outlet in the other room is protected by the GFCI.

Once that is achieved, do some activities you may have never done before, like bowling or darts. Something easy and full of companionship and laughs.

AFAIK, code requires the bathroom GFCI to be on its own circuit. IIRC, I put the ceiling heat lamp on the same circuit so its timer switch, adjacent to the sink, was also protected by the GFCI.

I keep saying this. God bless her, she shouldn't have even gone up for a week at her age, and body weight. She was borderline too thin before she left, given her age.
I went carnivore in 2021. Was 57. Both my primary doc and my endocrinologist ( I'm hyperthyroid) were fully on board with it til I hit a certain amount of weight loss. I had gotten down to 117, which is what I weighed in high school, so it wasn't unprecedented, but I'm 5'8" and they both went ballistic, and said that weight at my age was an entirely different situation than being that weight at 17, when I was not actively losing muscle, just as a matter of aging.
I eat a high fat, high protein diet, ketovore, not pure carnivore, and even though I get more than enough protein and fo strength training, I still struggle a bit to keep muscle. I cannot imagine that Miss Suni is going to bounce right back from this. She never should have gone.

For new runs, I think you’re right. In BC’s case it’s likely an older building where they put multiple rooms on the same breaker. GFCI probably went bad at some point (as they have the lifespan of fruit flies, at least the new Chinesium ones do) and maintenance guy rewired the downstream leg to load instead of line.

Definitely don’t do it yourself, BC. I’m comfortable working with electricity, but I would never touch the wiring in an apartment building when I lived in one.
Independent electricians probably won’t touch it, either, as BC does not own the building. And building owner definitely does not want it. Best bet is to talk to maintenance and articulate the problem and see if they can fix. If not, ask if they’d be ok with you hiring an outside electrician.
Or, just wait for it to trip, then find an outlet that still has power and run an ext cord.

Purchase a circuit tester, push the test button in the bathroom. Test the circuits in the other rooms. Determine which were controlled by the bathroom GFI. (no power). Move computer plugs to an outlet which did not stop working.

Old school: plug a radio into the outlet being tested, and play it loud enough to hear from next room. Hit "test" button on GFCI outlet. If radio goes silent, that outlet was controlled by GFCI, if it continues playing, it was not.

I've been thinking about that since this conversation started. BC should explain his residence situation to each electrician he calls if he goes that route. They'll either work on his condo/apartment or they won't. I'm guessing, but outside guys may agree to find the problem but not fix it due to liability. At least BC can then suggest to the building maintenance guys what/where to check.

Norm was a charmer, and there was never any venom in his jokes. The guy was a Mensa level genius, and balanced that with a refreshingly humble demeanor. He was literally the smartest guy in the room, and made certain that none of that came out in his performances. Other celebs were mesmerized by him - Bob Dylan invited Macdonald to stay as a guest at his home for a week, just for the purpose of conservation. The only negative reactions he seemed to get were from self-important Hollywood luminaries - I remember seeing him on Conan when Thomas Hayden Church was promoting some vanity project, and was showing off some photos of windmills. Norm asked him "Do you tilt at them?" Church snapped at him, but was notably deflated for the rest of the segment.

Heard a true story about British military humor, or at least attitude: an artillery unit was stationed on a steep hillside, towards the top, shelling positions on the other side of the valley. One of the howitzers wasn’t properly secured, and the recoil from firing caused it to plunge down the slope, towards some troops a couple level’s below. They were horrified, but didn’t want to show it so they finally sent a runner down to ask “have any of you chaps seen a loose gun down here?”
And he brought back their reply, being “”What color was it?”

But that was the whole point - you weren't supposed to like him. If anything, he went out of his way to make audiences hate him, or at least find him unsettling. His stint in Mid-South Wrestling is probably the ultimate in what he was looking to do - he was an out-and-out Heel, and the other Faces and Heels worked together to make sure he got over. If Kaufman could have handled the toll on his body from taking bumps, he might have remained in pro wrestling for quite a while and been the happier for it.

I know there are other Spanish comedian actors, but the only other ones I know was the group Les Luthiers out of Argentina, which is quite funny, and probably the only use of puns in all of Latin.America in all of history. Cubans can be funny in a sort of a wry slice of life way, but most Mexicans I have seen tend to do a lot of mugging like early Jerry Lewis.

El Santo had amazing commitment to kayfabe - he never removed his mask in public, not even in the luchadore films he starred in, and was actually buried with it when he passed away. As far as I know, he never took the role of a Rudo, or Heel, and his funeral was one of the most heavily attended in Mexican history.
