Hello, everyone. Since the Horde is the greatest collection of intelligence in the cosmos, I have a question. It regards electricity. I live in an apartment on the 99th floor of my block. And lately, my electricity just pops off. KER-Bang. I have to go to the bathroom and punch the button-thing and it all comes back online. Since my computer, with its various graphics and such, is on that circuit, this presents a dilemma. If I am editing a graphic, and the power goes off, this is considered not good. Last time this happened, several years ago, the maintenance folks said this was due to something I had that was "messing" with the, shall we say, "electrical flow." And it indeed turned out to be an old UPS that just couldn't adjust. Now, it is happening again. Lots of times. I've put in a maintenance request, but I will bet several dimes that they will say the same thing. So, ultimately, my question is, how can I determine which (if any) of my "electrically dependent" devices might be the problem? What equipment should I get? Meters? Plugs? I apologize for my ignorance in these matters, which should be plainly known by all. Posted by: BeckoningChasm at March 19, 2025 10:10 PM (CHHv1) 30

That's a tripping GFCI. It could be a bad GFCI unit, or an actual ground fault, a "leak" of current to ground, which it detects. If you can figure out what's on the circuit, trying unplugging it all, and seeing if any such thing is the cause. It can also be wiring faults at receptacle. These GFCIs can be quite sensitive. Just a few mA of leakage current will trip them. If some wires, even neutral to ground "near faults" caused by wires mashed together, or rubbing and wearing insulation can do it. Used to watch the Tonight show some, I can still remember laughing over the times Johnny would have the wild animals on. When Leno retired that was it for me watching any of the late shows. I likes Jay's skits.
I think I was just too old or out of touch to appreciate Fallon's skits. I watched a bit of Kimmel for awhile, but then Trump won in 2016 and Kimmel went insane and all the comedy seemed to disappear from most of those shows. Posted by: PaleRider at March 19, 2025 10:15 PM (bP/i4) 46

Jonathon Winters probably deserves a mention. I never really “got” his humor, I think he was genuinely crazy.
Now I would have paid money to be in his military unit, I guess he was in the Marines. I guarantee he was a riot almost every day, and probably got in a lot of trouble. Some of the best natural comedians were people in the military who didn’t GAF to a certain degree. I don’t know what it is, but the highly (literally) regimented routine really brings out the best humor at times. Posted by: Common Tater at March 19, 2025 10:17 PM (YovzQ) 50

You have to hit the button on the outlet in the bathroom to get power to your computer? If so, it’s likely dumb wiring and a failing GFCI (the bathroom outlet.) Posted by: Disinterested FDA Director at March 19, 2025 10:17 PM (OGo8+) 51
Comedians? I'm going old school: Steve Allen. I remember watching his show as a kid and just laughing.
Favorite story: There was a sketch where Allen was the bartender in a Western saloon. Tom Poston (a regular) swaggers in and orders a whiskey. Now he thought they were going to use colored tea as in the rehearsal. But no, they gave him real whiskey. He slammed the shot down and said, "I'll have another." On live tv. Posted by: BeckoningChasm at March 19, 2025 10:10 PM (CHHv1) Unplug appliances, one at a time, and see if the outages cease. I would cast a particularly jaundiced eye at any devices that contain heating elements that cycle on and off, like coffee makers. Computer power supplies, themselves, can do this on their own, if a capacitor within them, or on the motherboard starts breaking down. I have experienced this. Letterman was really good earlier on, he didn’t take himself too seriously, and did crazy stuff. I liked Jay Leno who had a lot of respect for the craft I think. So does Seinfeld. Johnny Carson left big shoes to fill that’s for sure.
Carlin was great, and could play it straight when he wanted. In later years he must have been clinically depressed, and bitter. Maybe an occupational hazard. I thought Kramer made Seinfeld, or at least approaching half. He is another that takes humor very seriously, if that makes sense. Historically speaking, he studied all the old school guys, who learned how to comically fall down stairs and not damage their bodies too badly. Big second for Norm Macdonald - the guy was a literal genius and could have chosen any route in life, but, luckily for us, he made comedy his pursuit. Check out YouTube for his story about fulfilling a terminally ill young boy's request from the Make-A-Wish Foundation, or his gag about the moth visiting an ophthalmologist.
I'd just add one more item to those above about David Letterman - in addition to the gags and stunts, there was another feature to his comedy: he set out quite deliberately to subvert everything about the traditional talk show, and he wasn't afraid to go in some rather dark directions to do so. Letterman wanted to do the talk show from Hell, and he pulled it off. Conan O'Brian deserves mention as well - his mix of the whimsical with the nonesensical was a treat to see, and I'm still not sure how he got away with it. Anyone remember a certain bear that was a recurring feature of Conan's show. Finally, Stella - the Three Stooges meet Dadaism. Their raking leaves sketch is the perfect illustration of what unrecognized geniuses they were. Posted by: Count Orlok at March 19, 2025 10:26 PM (Wl9BE) 82

If youre fixing to make a decision about whats right and wrong in your life
do you ask other peoples opinion about it? Thats a pretty good indication you fixin to mess up. I was getting ready for a date one night when I was a little ol boy, and I walked into the side room and I said, Mama, is my shirt dirty? She said, son if youre in doubt, its dirty. Pull it off and get you another one.
So if youre fixin to do something, and you want to know if its right or not, number one, do you ask other peoples opinion about it? Number two, do you argue with yourself. Man, I have spent a many a mile on the highway arguing with Jerry about I oughta do a certain thing and I knew in my heart that I was lying. So if you arguing with yourself, pretty good indication you should not do it. Number three, do you feel uneasy when you do it. Had you just soon for somebody not see you doing what it is you done decided is all right for you to do. Number four, can you give thanks to the Lord and say Lord, I thank you for providing this for me. Nobody defects to the Soviet Union, much less a US Marine veteran in 1959 and returns without getting a lot of attention by various three letter agencies. He could have been an informant. About 4:30AM here. Yeh. Houtis. One missile. Wake up the whole neighborhood (Jerusalem and all of central Israel).
Jumped out of bed at the siren. Had to wake up Mrs. BD. Jumped into our robes but decided to stay in the middle of the house, away from windows, and not join all our neighbors heading down the building staircase to the shelter. And, really, it’s not a great idea to chain multiple rooms together. I prefer my GFCIs not inline, but I’ve got some in the master bathroom where a single GFCI protects multiple outlets. Kind of annoying, but reasonable and allowed by code.
But I wouldn’t run a separate bathroom chained off of that single GFCI because it makes resetting more difficult and unintuitive, making it more likely somebody will do something bad in the future. Posted by: Disinterested FDA Director at March 19, 2025 11:09 PM (OGo8+) 209

She was borderline too thin before she left, given her age. I went carnivore in 2021. Was 57. Both my primary doc and my endocrinologist ( I'm hyperthyroid) were fully on board with it til I hit a certain amount of weight loss. I had gotten down to 117, which is what I weighed in high school, so it wasn't unprecedented, but I'm 5'8" and they both went ballistic, and said that weight at my age was an entirely different situation than being that weight at 17, when I was not actively losing muscle, just as a matter of aging. I eat a high fat, high protein diet, ketovore, not pure carnivore, and even though I get more than enough protein and fo strength training, I still struggle a bit to keep muscle. Posted by: Gref at March 19, 2025 11:12 PM (aBgBM) Definitely don’t do it yourself, BC. I’m comfortable working with electricity, but I would never touch the wiring in an apartment building when I lived in one. Independent electricians probably won’t touch it, either, as BC does not own the building. And building owner definitely does not want it. Best bet is to talk to maintenance and articulate the problem and see if they can fix. If not, ask if they’d be ok with you hiring an outside electrician. When I travel for work to any major city, I'll check out the local comedy club which is invariably called something like (Chuckles, Laffs, Laugh Factory, etc). One show I always coveted was Bob Saget. I knew from experience that he was absolutely nothing like the character he played on TV, and there were always a lot of people who came to his show that had no idea how outright raunchy and brutal his comedy was. He did a good show, but the real show was all the people shocked by his lack of any sort of filter. It was glorious watching the expressions.
My other favorite comedian (who is, also, now deceased) was Patrice O'Neal. I swear he did shows just to make the audience uncomfortable. He was, also, brutal in his comedy. God help the person who showed negativity towards his set, because he'd absolutely tear them apart. Also, glorious. Posted by: Orson at March 19, 2025 11:30 PM (dIske) 249
233 For new runs, I think you’re right. In BC’s case it’s likely an older building where they put multiple rooms on the same breaker. GFCI probably went bad at some point (as they have the lifespan of fruit flies, at least the new Chinesium ones do) and maintenance guy rewired the downstream leg to load instead of line.
Posted by: Disinterested FDA Director at March 19, 2025 11:16 PM (OGo8+) Serious question: what are the legalities of bringing in an outside electrician to work in a (presumably) rented apartment? Thinking there might be a liability exposure that the independent might not want to assume. Posted by: Alberta Oil Peon at March 19, 2025 11:23 PM (MqtqS) I've been thinking about that since this conversation started. BC should explain his residence situation to each electrician he calls if he goes that route. They'll either work on his condo/apartment or they won't. I'm guessing, but outside guys may agree to find the problem but not fix it due to liability. At least BC can then suggest to the building maintenance guys what/where to check. 1. Donaldus Maximus and Putin had a nice long phone chat, which included discussing the war. Little came of it. 2. The Ukrainians attempted another small cross border raid into Russia, perhaps attempting to relieve some of the pressure on what remains of the nearby Kursk salient. It did not go well for them. 3. He was literally the smartest guy in the room, and made certain that none of that came out in his performances. Other celebs were mesmerized by him - Bob Dylan invited Macdonald to stay as a guest at his home for a week, just for the purpose of conservation. The only negative reactions he seemed to get were from self-important Hollywood luminaries - I remember seeing him on Conan when Thomas Hayden Church was promoting some vanity project, and was showing off some photos of windmills. Norm asked him "Do you tilt at them?" Church snapped at him, but was notably deflated for the rest of the segment. Posted by: Count Orlok at March 20, 2025 12:01 AM (Wl9BE) 287

As for Andy Kaufman, his aim wasn't so much for comedy, but for a combination of what the younger comedians refer to as anti-comedy and "facting." There was some humor involved, such as in his stint in pro-wrestling, but he wanted to subvert, confuse audiences, and break the fourth wall in any way that he could. Jerry Lawler was one of the few that got what Kaufman was doing, and their session on Letterman was a masterpiece of maintaining kayfabe. Well, then, I was a primary target and I still don't like him. I never watched Taxi, either (too busy being a reckless yute).
Posted by: RickZ But that was the whole point - you weren't supposed to like him. If anything, he went out of his way to make audiences hate him, or at least find him unsettling. His stint in Mid-South Wrestling is probably the ultimate in what he was looking to do - he was an out-and-out Heel, and the other Faces and Heels worked together to make sure he got over. If Kaufman could have handled the toll on his body from taking bumps, he might have remained in pro wrestling for quite a while and been the happier for it. Norm was definitely taking the piss out of O.J. Lorne Michaels told him to quit doing the jokes. The next Weekend Update, he did O.J. jokes. End of Norm's stint on SNL. IIRC, they did bring him back to host a show, maybe because of the uproar over his being canned. The O.J. jokes were funny. Cruel but funny.

And, before the evening comes to an end, let's not forget Wayne and Shuster, the comedic duo of Johnny Wayne and Frank Shuster, the Canadian comedic performers who delighted audiences from 1941-1990. It's hard to single out their best work because they were so creative. "Rinse the Blood Off My Toga," which paired Shakespeare and Mickey Spillane, and "A Shakespearean Baseball Game," which is just what it sounds like, right down to the iambic pentameter. The last featured the line "O, what a rogue and bush league slob am I!... O, curséd fate, that I, who led the league, should bat .208." Parker and Stone have never admitted it, but I think they inspired Terrence and Philip.

And I see that Rodney Dangerfield didn't get any respect from TRex... typical.
That man never did get any respect! Posted by: SimoHayha at March 19, 2025 10:08 And there's other oldies all these you pups learned from, like George Burns and Jonathan Winters. Sometimes it's a thin line between comedy and insanity and Winters crossed over it truly. Posted by: Farmer at March 20, 2025 03:26 AM (55Qr6) 422

I don't mind the Stegosaurus plate thingees on her hair, black ladies can get away with things Ike that, but I am puzzled about her scalp showing with all those braids and no particular pattern that I can see. To say nothing about those braids on her forehead edges.
Sometimes black ladies' hairstyles are protective; they're doing it to give their hair a rest from chemicals, etc. This one I am puzzled about, because most of that hair is probably not even hers. I don't know if it's some Black Kween energy or what. And she appears to be wearing Barry's clothes, no? Posted by: Tammy al-Thor at March 20, 2025 04:02 AM (Vvh2V) 428
