37 From the MET:
This allegory was painted for the papal nephew Cardinal Francesco Barberini. As in a tableau vivant, recognizable people have taken emblematic roles: a young woman has dressed as Italy (wearing a castellated crown, holding a shield, and standing on a cornucopia); two hairy-chested men play the parts of river gods (the Arno, with a lion, and the Tiber, with the twins Romulus and Remus and the she-wolf that suckled them). In this work, Valentin pushed the practice of painting from a posed model to its extreme, creating a unique masterpiece as radical as anything by Caravaggio. Indeed, even Gustave Courbet, two centuries later, did not surpass the realism of the models-cum-river gods. The painting occupied a place of honor in the cardinal’s residence and must have provoked fascinating conversations.

86 A remarkable painting. The way Boulogne uses bright colors in clothing and skin tones against a dark background makes the figures and objects pop on the canvas. Given the circa 1600 time period, I was surprised at the realism of the people and flow of clothing. I don't know about the symbolism in the painting but it seems sure it is there. For my taste, his use of dramatic lighting makes the image even more effective.

Looking at the other paintings on his Wiki page, he uses similar techniques to create a sense of drama and just as effectively. The viewer feels like they are seeing something in person, not just a painting in a frame.

I wonder if he was an influence on the the later Dutch masters like Rembrandt.

======

It is being reduced to statutory minimums, which will shut down many functions and departments within it.

It was spun off from HHS in 1979 through an Act of Congress. It'll take an Act of Congress to shut it down completely. And Johnson has said that will happen.

So...we'll see.

137 Pretty pic.

The best allegory of modern Italy is from a Japanese anime, Hetalia. All the major WW2 countries are anthropomorphized to be people.

Italy is two characters: a glorious ancient Roman soldier chad, and a weak beta soy boy male that is modern Italy post Roman Empire. The Roman Chad Italy is constantly frustrated at seeing the beta he evolved into.

Sadly, the allegory works for a LOT of countries nowadays, not just Italy. (Looking at you, Greeks and Scandis.)

179 This allegory was painted for the papal nephew Cardinal Francesco Barberini. As in a tableau vivant, recognizable people have taken emblematic roles: a young woman has dressed as Italy (wearing a castellated crown, holding a shield, and standing on a cornucopia); two hairy-chested men play the parts of river gods (the Arno, with a lion, and the Tiber, with the twins Romulus and Remus and the she-wolf that suckled them). . . .

I refuse to use these services because the vig is like 40%, at least in NYC. The menu prices you order from on the app are already increased 15-20%. Then they charge you a "delivery fee" and a "service fee." Then they suggest a 20% tip!

There's a Chick-fil-a by work where I usually lunch since the cafeteria here is garbage. I rack up the reward points as a result (current balance is 33,253 points).

Honestly I rarely touch the meat with my hands before it is cooked - I use a fork to take it out of the container it comes in and but it in my dish. If you use a pre-made marinade the whole thing takes like 5m of your actual time the night before, and 5m the day of.

You can also throw on a bag of rice to have with it, which is also easy. I do cut up some peppers or broccoli though and that does take longer.

295 Another easy cooking method - just buy steaks and throw them on the grill.

Your women-folk will look on you with awe, and the steaks you cook will likely be better then anything you can get in a restaurant unless you go to the real high end places

298 Holy crap, just read the post from Trump on Paul Weiss.

It's hard to explain but, that's as close as you'll ever get lawyers to admit they really, really, really f'd up and are really, really, really sorry.

They basically crawled on their belly to the throne of Trump and scrapped the floor with their noses bowing on the way out.

I'll tell my wife that I am an incel. I am the cook of the family and if I can manage to whip up a meal within 10-30 minutes from the fridge and freezer even with fairly crippling arthritis, anyone can do it.

Have a main meat dish to cook, then add at least two different veggies as side dishes. Frozen veggie packs (or even canned) makes it a snap to do, fresh requires more prep but doable if you can use a knife. Arthritic changes in hands precludes doing things like deboning, but lots of easy ways to cook meat quickly via the skillet, indoor grill, etc.

Key to rapid cooking is the thickness of the meat. Thicker requires longer.

313 When I was in kindergarten, I decided to cook a hotdog in the microwave.

It was on the first commercial break of back to back episodes of Inspector Gadget, so I calculated the correct time to cook as 55 minutes to line up with the end of my show.

It was just a black shoestring when i went back downstairs.

314 Door dash has its uses - It was a life saver when I had pneumonia and it was just my little one and me. She was too young to cook, and I was SICK. I had to feed her until I could drag myself to the kitchen. There was 24 hours of her watching whatever she wanted on TV because I couldn’t do anything, I probably should have been in the hospital but I had no one to help me with her.

I had pedialyte delivered when we both had the stomach virus and we were alone. I wasn’t going anywhere and I wasn’t going to ask anyone to go to the store for me for that.

Pesto is one of those sauces I prefer to buy rather than make (even if I could nowadays). Kirkland's Costco brand is both excellent and inexpensive plus a little goes a long way.

Carmelizing onions without burning them requires a bit of knowledge--e.g. dry the damn things off and use a modicum of cooking oil/butter/etc.

I rarely use skirt steak for fajitas because it requires marinination to be tender rather than beef jerky.

326 A "friend" of mine cooked last week filet mignon with mushroom sauce, scallops, broccolini, and smash potatoes. She brought everything to my place and cooked it all herself. It's rare, though.

327 The heightened realism of the work made me think this was a 19th century work. The unification of Italy was in 1861. Reading on in the comments, it was an early 17th century work which blows my mind. Still it’s like a painting of the allegory of Germany when there were still many “Germanys” - as in pre-1871, not the post WWII split.

Posted by: NemoMeImpuneLacessit at March 21, 2025 11:06 AM (4rvfO)

328 I was curious, so:

The painting features three central figures, each embodying a symbolic aspect of Italy:

The Young Woman as Italy: At the center stands a majestic female figure, adorned with a castellated crown, holding a shield, and standing atop a cornucopia. She personifies Italy itself, symbolizing its strength, sovereignty, and abundance. The crown evokes the fortified cities of the Italian peninsula, while the cornucopia signifies its natural wealth and fertility.

The Tiber River God: On the left foreground, a robust, bearded male figure represents the Tiber River, which flows through Rome. He is accompanied by the she-wolf suckling Romulus and Remus, the legendary founders of Rome, tying him to the city’s origin myth and its historical centrality in Italian identity.

The Arno River God: On the right foreground, another male figure symbolizes the Arno River, associated with Florence. He is depicted with a lion, a symbol of Florentine power and pride, highlighting the cultural and political significance of Tuscany.
