I think hippos are generally considered the 2nd most dangerous African animal after Cape Buffalo. I have this weird memory from 20+ years ago of taking the kids to a zoo, probably Audubon in NOLA, where they had an audio tour thingie and the hippo had its own catchy little jingle that had the lines (something something something) do not let him alarm you he is a vegetarian and would not want to harm you I was amazed at the utter bullsh*t they were trying to teach kids. In astro-gnomonical news, today is the equilux, or as closest to it as we get for most everybody in the US. About 12 hours of daylight vs 12 hours of night. This occurs before the equinox because sunrise and sunset are defined with the upper limb of the sun just touches the horizon. We are also in the window near the vernal equinox when the rate of change of daylight is the greatest. Here at ~35N latitude, that's 2:11 per day. Up in Alaska, it's over 6 minutes per day. 3 days until equinox and the start of astronomical spring. Posted by: publius, Rascally Mr. Miley (w6EFb) at March 17, 2025 08:16 PM (w6EFb) 66

I didn't know this before my first trip but bull elephants have a period known as musth when their hormones spike and they are ready to breed. They protect their females and get very aggressive. We were on one of those typical trucks with bench seats you always see in pictures of game drives. There were two German tourists behind us. We came upon a bull who was in musth and he got very angry. He would charge at us from behind the truck, trumpeting and throw dirt in the air with his trunk and the game warden would speed up and then slow and let the elephant catch up and he kept repeating it. The Germans keep screaming MUST GO FASTER! GO NOW! They were terrified and the game warden and the rest of us were laughing our asses off. Posted by: JackStraw at March 17, 2025 08:17 PM (LkLld) 69

Quite likely there are deviant individuals on this very blog that could profit from this therapy. Posted by: Cattle Annie and Little Britches The Watusi have a breed of cattle named after them. Posted by: Ben Had Wiki, about the watusi cattle: It was probably introduced to Uganda between five and seven hundred years ago by nomadic pastoralists from more northerly parts of the continent. So, brought in from the northeast part of Africa quite recently. Not the sort of animals stone-age Africans had to work with. Maasai, the same. Herders for about the last 400+ years. Europeans and Mideasterners have been farming for 5000-7000 years. Mostly because they had animals that took well to domestication. Cattle, horses, sheep, goats. Even hogs are easier to domesticate than most of what Africa had to work with. Posted by: mikeski at March 17, 2025 08:58 PM (DgGvY) 138

NASA actually tried out a zero-g on Skylab back in the '70s. It was a complicated contraption. Pressurized water through a shower-head nozzle. Maybe the only time a herd of cattle was used offensively in a war was in 1591 in Mali. The Battle of Tondibi pitted the invading army of Morocco against the Songhai tribe, the cattlemen. Songhai tried to stampede their 1,000 cattle herd toward the Moroccans, but the invaders shot their guns and cannons, and the cattle turned back on the Songhai. Defenders had no gunpowder weapons, so they were doomed.
Moroccans thought the Songhai had gold mines and gold wealth, but they had none, or very little. Posted by: Cattle Futures And Past at March 17, 2025 09:16 PM (G5+As) Posted by: Tonypete at March 17, 2025 09:16 PM (cYBz/) 157
