My high school had a setup that I suspect has long vanished — the open campus. In practice, that meant coming and going wasn’t monitored. One could just walk off campus and leave, so skipping school was extraordinarily easy, whether one took a full or a partial day.Heck, during my senior year, I left after sixth period basically every day since journalism conflicted with one of my AP courses, meaning that I had journalism during seventh period. The teacher didn’t show up because it wasn’t the normal class period, so neither did I — especially since my physical attendance had no bearing on whether or not I submitted my reviews of the latest grunge releases for the school paper (my musical focus at the time was a tad monomaniacal).
Which isn’t to say my friends and I never outright skipped, opting to not even bother showing up before leaving. The open campus still made it easier to avoid detection in those situations. (The fact that we worked in the attendance office made it easier to obscure the record the next day.) For example, if your father saw you at your friend’s house, he could assume it was because it was lunchtime. At least, he could assume that until the school called because you needed to fill out a form for a writing contest you were selected to participate in, at which point your friend’s phone rang.
See, I remember high school being the same way. I tried to get my son to enjoy the freedom he was earning, but sometimes he just didn't want to. He'd rather have his face burried in this phone than go outside.

On Covid
Reading further, I am reminded that my initial attitude was bemusedly and mulishly obedient, a grudging “whatever, let’s just try to make the best of a bad situation.” But this is when I start to feel an acute twinge of pain, and it becomes hard to go beyond that without pausing for a deep breath. Because I remember what happened next. I remember what was taken from me. I remember what they took from my son. And I am once again painfully overwhelmed by the lone true emotion that dominates my memories of the Covid Era: rage.This is the real reason I haven’t written about Covid. I cannot summon memories of that era without becoming furious at what I suffered through, without reliving the sense of utter betrayal from all authority we experienced during that period. It's a tragedy the way his son was treated, but he also references a tweet from the time where he said Covid was “20X more fatal than the flu”. We all know now that that wasn't true.

During the latter part of my senior year I was 18. The legal drinking age in MD at the time for beer and wine was.... 18. Within walking distance was a deli. That served beer. In cans/bottles. Good subs. And beer.
It wasn't a daily occurrence, but I did run out of lunch money early a couple weeks here and there.

As everyone knows, the CDU, having "won" the election, proceeded to betray its voters by starting coalition talks with the SPD (Social Democrats). And as everyone also knows, this required the CDU to scrap all its tough talk during the campaign about a strict immigration policy, in hopes that the SPD would also compromise.
Well. The SPD is now--get this--not compromising on its open-borders policy. They are now demanding that the CDU agree to allowing 500,000 immigrants into the country per year, give voting rights to non-citizen migrants, and agree that deportation will be only a "very last resort," for repeat criminal offenders.
All or most of which I predict the CDU will cave to, because, having thrown away the possibility of allying with the AfD, they have no more cards left.

I sure do hope so! I will know more in about 6 weeks, when I have my next CT scan.
I honestly don't know if the numbers correlate to the size of one's tumor. This medication has only been on the market a couple of years, and the study that was done on it didn't mention anything about tumor size in either the main study or the supplemental report. I don't know if they were even looking at that as a data point.

The Firefly Blue Ghost Lander is going to have some interesting things to deal with during the eclipse tonight. It's going to try to get a first-ever shot of a solar eclipse from the Moon.
When the sun is blocked, the solar panels will not longer be operative, and the lander will have to use battery power. They're having to figure their power budget carefully to operate the cameras during the event.
And then thermal management is another. The lander is just coming off high noon on the Moon. During this, they had to cycle power off and on to keep from overheating. They're just coming back to 100% duty cycle now. But during the eclipse, the temperature is going to drop like a rock rapidly.

One of our sons was convinced that by our not wearing masks, we were trying to kill him and his wife. That and other matters (TDS, "gender confusion") drove him to cut us off and we haven't had contact with them nor our two grandchildren since my Mom's funeral in '21.

Something that really, really pissed me off was our daughter-in-law was pregnant at the start of the bullshit. The doctors and hospital wouldn't let them step a foot into the buildings unless they got the SHOT.
The repercussion is that our darling granddaughter had problems speaking and it took lots of speech therapy to get her on the right track to learn how to talk. Even today she has difficulties.

It is a nasty cancer. So nasty that of the 100 people who were enrolled in the study, only 1 was still alive 2 years later.
And so rare that they had to go to 27 countries to finally find 100 people (out of 800 who - over 8 years - were initially recruited for the study) to be able to run the study (the other 700 were either too sick or no longer around to be able to participate).
My oncologist has had a grand total of 2 patients who were able to take this medication. Neither one is still alive.
I would REALLY love to be the one who makes medical history, and I am certainly fighting as hard as I can to beat this. But I have to be realistic about what I am facing...

Nearly killed me. O2 sat at 60%. Did it all..
Ivermectin, hcq,nac,vit c,d . Nope and nope nothing helped.
Got the glassed lungs. Went to hospital. No spouse allowed, abandoned like a sick dog. I Refused their only allowed remdesivir intubation treatment, got SCREAMED at by the er doc for refusing, and was then literally abandoned to the basement of the er with no water, no food, no pillow ,no blanket, not one visit by attending nurses for 12 hours while they had a birthday party for a nurse in the room next door. Thank God I had my rosary and my down coat.
I was then transferred to the upstairs Covid wing, the nurse there scrambled to get me out because she feared for my life and said so. Out in 4 hours.
Whew. Two months on o2, but the concentrator they sent me home with failed three times, so my beloved spouse bought and had an emergency shipment of a concentrator so we could have reliable equipment.
A nightmare I will never ever forget, and I blame evryone involved. Top to bottom. Total culture of death.
Covid was nothing to screw around with and they were positively salivating at reducing the population. I saw it with my own eyes.

Looking back, there is NO doubt in my mind that this was the intended outcome.
They tagged me as a do not resuscitate the minute I was admitted. With a fever of 102 and low O2 I was not clear on what was happening and conveniently had NO advocate because of their policies. I snapped to attention late and demanded they reverse the DNR toe tag as I'd reconsidered.
Accused the admitting doc of trying to set me up to be killed. That got her attention.
I told the er doc that his remdesivir treatment was responsible for killing upwards of of 40% of the people he was giving it to, he was at the time surrounded by an entourage of travelling nurses, probably five. I kid you not, he started screaming at me about how I didn't know shit from shinola and how about a little sympathy for what he and his staff were going through.
That's when I started bawling and literally held my rosary up in his face. Get away from me, you creep.
That's when they literally abandoned me. I'm alive today because I refused them.
If I ever ever see that doc again.......

Just ran the eclipse at high speed in Stellarium. The Moon's magnitude doesn't drop that much at all all until the moment it's nearly completely in the umbra. Then it drops to a minimum of -1.x. Still bright in absolute terms, but dimmer than Venus right now.

1. You must be your own advocate when entering the system. No one in the system now has your best interest at heart. God help you if you are not lucid at the time of the event.
2. It was very, very hard to convince my family and friends that it actually happened in this manner. They simply did not want believe me....until multiple people started getting their identical stories out. That poor little Downs teenager, Grace was her name, her family got the story out and that's when my friends and family started to believe.
Just a disgrace how this was handled and I hope someday justice will be served for those who fell victim to these monsters.

Hi, Mike! Looking forward to meeting you tomorrow. We got Osprey's water system working. Cut back the 3/4" PVC pipes that led to the water softener, which had frozen and split. Observed standing water in both pipes, suggesting no leaks below the cut points. Glued up a new "U" bend of PVC pipe to join the cut ends, let glue set for an hour, and turned on the well pump. No leaks! Woot!

I mean it’s not like I’m watching my phone 24:7. But if my kids are out somewhere I like knowing I can take a quick glance and know where they are. And my youngest has told me she feels safe knowing where mom and dad are. I remember when I was a kid back in the olden days of land lines I’d get freaked out if my parents were late getting home. I d think we’re thy in a car crash?
Add the anxiety every kid has today and stuff like that is much worse.

I am fortunate to be among the 40% who has responded well to this medication. We were shocked when one of the oncologists told us that a 40% response was "FANTASTIC!" - I guess I always thought the numbers were higher.
I actually responded to this the first week that I took it - my numbers dropped by 75%. I don't think anyone responded that quickly in the study. I am immensely grateful - and I think I might have a fighting chance - thanks to my oncologist being willing to bail on the first line of chemotherapy when it became obvious after just 2 months that it wasn't working to stop that treatment and move on to this medication. The oncology surgeon was very surprised that he had done that - as he told us, most doctors wait 6 months to see if 1st line chemo will work.
He may have bought me a lot more time.
Now I need people to pray that my eyes don't get messed up again!

The Firefly Blue Ghost lander is in the Sea of Crisis. Look up at the Moon, and look near the limb at about the 1 o'clock location. The Sea of Crisis is a little dark spot. That's where Blue Ghost is. The Erf is getting close to the Sun, but not yet from its POV.

They did restrict restaurants a little longer, and they did make everyone put up the signs that said you had to wear a mask, but the only place that enforced it was the hospital and medical clinics.

Quite the ooposite to me. While they were pushing the exhaustive hand-washing to save lives story, I thought of all the homeless people who are obviuosly not washing their hands a gazillion times a day (nor wearing masks, either, but that's not important right now) so why aren't there mountains of homeless corpses piling up on The Streets of San Francisco, e.g.? People need to stand trial for some very serious crimes. Let a jury hear the evidence and, IMO, the evidence is damning.

Before the Plague hit, there was a phone game called Pokemon Go that became a craze. The funny thing is, you couldn't just play it on your phone. You had to have location services enabled, so you could be geolocated.
The reason? The game forced you to wander around in reality to catch "pokemon", rather than just staying at home to do so. So you'd have roving groups of people rushing to certain places in real life for a chance to unlock rare and special monsters. Or to do the "pokemon gyms", which were some sort of "king of the hill" team game.
So, still on the phones, but they actually got out, and had to go to places. Met other people who had something in common (the game). A little bit of exercise, even.
And then the lockdowns began.

From Tranquility Base, you'd be seeing a red ring of fire around the dark spot that's the Erf. That's the red sunlight being refracted from the daylight side of the Erf.

When the August meteor showers (Perseids) cranked up, we'd go to the backyard and stretch out on loungers to watch the shows. Had plenty of beverages, radio & blankets if it was chilly. Fun!

Wish I could be on the Moon watching this. Right now, the sun is blocked out completely, a ring of fire around the Erf. Saturn would be very close to the earth on the lower left. Mercury and Venus would be above it, shining fairly brightly.

We have our monthly dept. meeting on Zoom today (my last one!!! Whee!!!!), and I need to call a local lamp store/repair shop to make sure they're open tomorrow. I know how to change a lamp socket -- the current one is difficult to put the 3-way bulb into "bright" -- but I always have trouble getting the socket out. Perhaps the shop can do it in a reasonable time for not much $.
