Nope. It was your standard run-of-the-mill regional conference for higher-education (and some K-12) folks. But we do it quite well after doing it for 16 years now. People really like it.

Relatively few graduate students this year for some reason. (They tend to sign up for a free lunch.)

Baboons are really bad news, they are strong, mean and go into a frenzy at need. Leopards are one of their main predators, and they really hate leopards.

Also it is apparently important not to let them have access to any of your equipment, because eventually they will figure it out. Especially stuff that goes "bang"

Something I learned first hand about Moose. Their front legs are too long causing them to bend their first joint down in sort of a kneeling position when they graze.

I turns out that if you purchase an airhorn and "inadvertently" fire that off when they are in that position, they'll fall over. Or so I'm told

We have insurance, but we went bare bones on the drug part (whatever it is). My wife got a cancer diagnosis about 2 months ago. Having immunotherapy and some cancer drug to enhance same. Immunotherapy (every 3 weeks) was just under $87,000. (!) per.
Drug company waived the deductible.
Cost $0.
So, every now and again, the blind squirrel does get an acorn.

I'm an independent contractor, wifey is retired, and we have refused to participate in DeathCare on principle -- and refused to pay the "mandate" fine.

Anywho, fortunately we're both very healthy and pay occasional medical costs out of pocket (where your costs are like 50% of what they would normally bill insurance -- how is that not straight-up insurance fraud?), and we'll be enrolled in Medicare (ugh) in a couple of years.

Jesus Christ that brings back some memories. Early 2010s I was on a gas diving job in California, installing risers on a platform. Superintendent was one of those crusty old fucks who should have retired but he can't because he has no life outside of work, and his wife chain smoked and rescued stray cats.

Anyway, he could also be a massive drama queen. He was going on and on about how stressful the job was, and he ended up writing 'DNR' across his own chest in Sharpie and made a show of showing it to me (I was the diver medic). I ended up telling him that's not how fucking DNRs work and that if he went down I'd bring him back just to piss him off.
