I have to admit I was late to the realization that long ago the political class figured out how thoroughly passivating the effect would be to simply have the *appearance* of an opposition, but actually do nothing. And the key of course is that the opposition party cannot actually win, or it becomes obvious that they intend to do nothing.
Anyone who was in government during Trump's first term when the GOP never put forward a single bill to end Obamacare is obviously complicit and should be primaried. Which I think is probably just all of them.

I actually used to read some of the CATO institute's stuff... like in 2009. Even back then it seemed watered down libertarianism, kinda fiscally conservative but leftist on everything else.
The Mises Institute (mises.org) is much better but they've got some crackpots there as well.

A lot of the libertarian policy organizations (Niskanen, CATO, and Reason among others) were infiltrated during the Obammy years to become liberaltarian. Cato was one of them. Cato is also one of the remaining Koch Brothers playthings.
The libertarians left in those organizations were socially liberal and did not seem to much care about economic liberty other than open borders.

Reagan was far better than the NTers ever were. They were fake and phoney from the beginning and their whole Weakly Standard, National Review, etc. were set up to corral and control conservative thought to GloboHomo and to support endless wars abroad.
What Reagan was though is a Greatest Generation who came of age during the New Deal and he viewed the enemy of the US as the decaying Soviet Union and its flunkies rather than spend political capital on destroying domestic liberalism that was morphing into leftism at the time.
Simply put, the number of people alive from 1980-88 that could actually remember Harding's avoidance of a severe lasting Depression versus FDR's endless one were very few. Big government became simply something that was instead of killing it.

Reagan had to work with a Democrat controlled House and a slight Republican majority in the Senate.
They did cut a lot of regulations that were left over from the New Deal, so that helped.
But yeah, cutting government wasn't really a priority as Reagan was determined to cut taxes and grow the DoD budget and he had to make deals with Tip O'Neil to get a lot of that done.

Its a good enough movie but as the years have gone on, it is revealed that every one of the 4 leads are despicable, horrific people: Madonna, Rosie O'Donnell, Tom Hanks, and Geena Davis. Its a tough watch knowing now what we know about them. I can put up with one scumbag in a movie (like, say, Bull Durham or O Brother Where Art Thou) but the movie being led by a cast of awful people... its too much to ignore.

Its a good enough movie but as the years have gone on, it is revealed that every one of the 4 leads are despicable, horrific people: Madonna, Rosie O'Donnell, Tom Hanks, and Geena Davis. Its a tough watch knowing now what we know about them. I was just reading some stuff about what happened to Starship 8. Stuff is leaking out, and it looks like this.
This is the new Block II, or "v2.0" design. They made some significant changes to the fuel and LOX plumbing system and tank systems. Apparently that design has some serious vibration problems.
That caused the failure of Flight 7, and they tried to make some changes, but apparently they didn't work, or even made it worse.
Anyway, the problem is resonant vibrations on the methane fuel lines that runs through the LOX tank. The sub-cooled LOX is enough to *freeze* the methane, so vacuum insulation is required, which can cause these resonances. When the LOX tank is filled enough, the vibrations are damped, but when it gets close to empty, they run amok.

We ran through the half dozen mergers and spinoffs in our company over the years along with the usual corporate numbers maneuvering and figured out that we have survived over two dozen waves of workforce reductions and layoffs.
It's about time the federal government workers realize that they are not in fact America's pseudo-royalty.
I worked for several years with a US Department of Ed contract and I can assure you everyone in a GS slot there could have been replaced by a plant in the lobby.

Reagan and Nixon were born only two years apart. JFK was born in 1917, so he's not much younger than Reagan or Nixon. They were all Depression-era young adults, and FDR's New Deal cast a huge shadow over everyone alive during that time. Reagan, as he often said, was a Democrat whose party left him a long time before.
What I'm saying is that the greatness of Reagan was that he transcended the influence of FDR, and created a new way that didn't exist before. I will not take that away from him. Trump has just built on what Reagan did to, I think, exceed him. Time will tell, however.
