9950X3D launched at $699 - This is a more reasonable "bleeding edge/recoup the R&D costs" sort of initial price when it's put in comparison to previously released chips and their current market prices.
GPU release pricing had skewed that percentage increase upward to the point of insanity. I hope that corrects back to normal as well. Posted by: Grumpy and Recalcitrant at March 12, 2025 04:17 AM (O7YUW) 11

I have never understood the fascination with Apple products.
The first iPods were amazing, and as Pixy points out, their stuff is very nice looking, but the premium is ridiculous. And the iPhone operating system is irritating as hell. Although... The DEI and ESG folks are putting on cammo and burrowing in (the more clever ones anyway) - but they are not gone and are just waiting for the D’s to take back power - at which point they plan to turn it up to 11. We are in the midst of a genuine clash of civilizations within the borders of nations - how those battles get resolved will then inform relations between nations. In the old days it may have led to a devolution to tribal structures and complete redrawing of boundaries. But with nukes, chemical and biological weapons - who knows. Got the vanity installed and should finish paint today. Posted by: Biden's Dog sniffs a whole lotta malarkey, at March 12, 2025 05:26 AM (cV1WU) Something along those lines. I watched a video yesterday that showed the time the tanker anchored and the time the freighter left port and they said that the freighter would have had their track laid in before they could have known the tanker was there. The freighter never deviated from its track all the way into the allision (collision where only one object is moving, apparently the boating channels think this distinction is important). There may have been heavy fog in the area at the time (there was on land in the area). I don't understand why the freighter was doing 16 knots that close to an anchorage anyway... criminal incompetence. Posted by: I used to have a different nic at March 12, 2025 05:32 AM (ExV1e) 26

An English muffin is a pretty good base for some quick easy meal. A vegetable patty is just poor follow through! I always liked poached eggs, with a runny yolk with lots of butter. Add a slice of ham, sausage or bacon, maybe some cheddar. Tasty. Peanut butter if you’re feeling indolent. Little pizza bites would work too. Or SOS. Lots of possibilities with English muffins. (The Brits have no such thing, or at least they don’t call them English muffins)

And I know lots of people here groan about Starbucks, but there was a very nice worker there yesterday whom I had a chat with. He was cleaning under the tables and I thanked him for his work and told him how I appreciated someone making coffee in the morning( and yes, I am quite capable of making coffee and no, I don't go there everyday or even every other day. I can just do some work with being distracted by things at home. He said that he didn't mind working there and not making a big salary right now because the workers are very friendly with each other and are a support to each other. The other day I met a very nice RC guy who was reading a devotional on St. Benedict and he told me that he thinks all Christians should be able to take the Lord's Supper together which I appreciated. I understand the theology of closed communion for Catholics and no, I don't want to debate it. 😊

60 No, Fen, no interviews. Right now I am dealing with my various medical issues. Today I have an EEG at my neurologist’s office. I have to be sleep-deprived for that — no more than four hours the night before. So I stayed up until midnight last night, and set the alarm for 4. But I got almost no sleep at all, so when the alarm went off at 4, I decided to give it another couple of hours. I was actually able to get some sleep, but was afraid of inadvertently going over the four-hour limit, so got up about 6:20. Needless to say, I’m a miserable wreck this morning. Oh, did I mention that I can’t have caffeine beforehand, either? And the EEG isn’t until 1 PM. Ugh.

So for your amusement, a tale from last night's Aikido class.
We have a new student who is a black belt in Karate (Don't know the specifics of his style). He's a teacher at a school the next town over and he wanted to learn something new. I work with him regularly and I will say that it is a different experience working with someone who has had a lot of training prior to showing up to us. There have been a few times where I struggle with him and have to focus on what I am doing wrong. But it's fine. This is all part of the learning and it's not like I have much in the way of an ego over this. And he's actually said that I've helped him quite a lot so things balance out. It does seem like they weren’t all that experienced. Seems like IPs generally had about double the flight hours, maybe even more but I don’t recall.
But the VIP unit is a really good gig. I’d think higher ranking, more experienced pilots would be fighting for those jobs, and the VIPs, if they were smart would want the same. I preferred crusty W4s with about 9000 flight hours. Posted by: Common Tater at March 12, 2025 07:05 AM (zh/Tt) 118

A federal jury in Cleveland has found a senior software developer guilty of sabotaging his employer's systems – and he's now facing a potential ten years behind bars.
Davis Lu, 55, of Houston, Texas, was a seasoned coder employed by power-management biz Eaton Corporation between November 2007 to October 2019. In his last year with the outfit, there was a corporate restructuring and he was demoted, both in terms of job responsibilities and server access. Lu began sabotaging his employer’s systems. By Aug. 4, 2019, he introduced malicious code that caused system crashes and prevented user logins. Specifically, he created “infinite loops” (in this case, code designed to exhaust Java threads by repeatedly creating new threads without proper termination and resulting in server crashes or hangs), deleted coworker profile files, and implemented a “kill switch” that would lock out all users if his credentials in the company’s active directory were disabled. The “kill switch” code — which Lu named “IsDLEnabledinAD”, abbreviating “Is Davis Lu enabled in Active Directory” — was automatically activated upon his termination on Sept. 9, 2019, and impacted thousands of company users globally. Additionally, on the day he was directed to turn in his company laptop, Lu deleted encrypted data. His internet search history revealed he had researched methods to escalate privileges, hide processes, and rapidly delete files, indicating an intent to obstruct efforts of his co-workers to resolve the system disruptions. Lu’s employer suffered hundreds of thousands of dollars in losses as a result of Lu’s actions.

Well, I don't have Passmark scores for this particular chip, but the 24-core M2 Ultra was slower than a 12-core previous-generation AMD desktop chip, and the latest 16-core M4 Max is slower than a 12-core previous generation AMD laptop chip.
Passmark? Really? Here in the real world (not Australia), the M-series chips runs compilers and scripting languages like Python faster than any PC desktop CPU that isn't $700 by itself (a 7950X3D almost matches a stock M3 so the 9950X3D should get there). It's a major productivity advantage for those of us who do that kind of thing. And for AI types, the 512GB model makes it the only consumer desktop machine that can run the full-size versions of the popular models. Given a single Nvidia AI GPU by itself costs around the same as that configuration, it's a big deal in those circles. Posted by: Ian S. at March 12, 2025 07:41 AM (Aqf1y) 162
