Obviated Democracy

There was a European election a few months ago and it was perhaps an example of Our Sacred Democracy in action. At the end of November while the dust was still settling around Trump's re-election and the mad scramble was fully underway, Romania had an election of its own. A man called Calin Georgescu got enough votes in that election to proceed to the runoff. His platform is unacceptable, as he is a nationalist, a Ukraine skeptic, a COVID skeptic and, if reporting is to be believed, also a Nazi, a moon-landing denier and a stooge of Putin.

He was, of course, a "far-right candidate." Whether that's true or not, I have no idea. But in the wake of his electoral surge, there was an inevitable recount. He won that, too. Then it went to court. The opponents to the election outcome argued not that the election was fake, but that it was manipulated by Russian social media operations, unleashing dormant TikTok accounts and buying off influencers to back Georgescu without disclosure, in violation of the law.

Russia and Georgescu, of course, denied this. In the days after the election, however, the Romanian high court tersely annulled the election after being briefed by Romanian intelligence. As near as I can tell, nobody argued that the vote was manipulated or faked. They argued that there's no way Georgescu could have won absent foreign interference, pointed out some potentially suspicious social media activity, blamed Russia and voided the election.

This may be an example of the grand European electoral tradition of "the wrong guy won, so the election was canceled." In that fine tradition of European democracy, the Romanians will have a chance to vote right next time, when they have their replacement election in May. Like Ireland and France before them, the voting shall continue until the outcome improves. To help ensure the correct outcome, the Romanian government charged Georgescu criminally a couple of weeks ago. Is any of it true? Is Georgescu a Nazi, a Russian stooge, a money launderer or a moon-landing conspiracy theorist? I have no idea. It's possible, of course, but the press is also in the business of lying. There's no way that I as an outsider can know.

True or not, however, the fact remains that in Europe, canceling elections or even nullifying them when the wrong person or cause wins is fairly routine. Ireland and France both did it with the European Constitution debacle (which they eventually rammed through as a treaty instead). Vance had plenty of content when he sternly dressed down Germany and Europe more broadly during his recent visit to Munich. AfD was not forbidden from participating in their elections a couple of weeks ago, but the other parties are refusing to consider cooperation with the country's second-largest - and officially-labeled "right-wing extremist" - party to ensure it remains marginalized. This is the same country where a left-wing party allegedly came "back from the dead" thanks to TikTok - the same phenomenon behind Romania's annulment of its election.

On our own continent and more recently, it's more of the same. Trudeau fake-resigned until his party could determine a replacement, and will likely hang on for a bit until he finally begrudgingly hands the reins over to Carney. Our own elections weren't exactly an exemplar of honesty in '20. Occasionally, a Trump '24 slips through the cracks, but it's fairly rare and it's fairly rare by design and the operators gear up to thwart it when it happens.

For the ruling class, elections aren't usually a problem. Their systems are designed to obviate them.

As it becomes obvious that what Trump is doing is attempting to dismantle the government within a government, expect the resistance to ramp up. Not just the street spectacles but real resistance of the class of people who run the systems that obviate elections.

Sometimes, we need to suspend elections all together in the name of democracy. Honestly, the only confusing thing is why Russia is the bad guy, I mean they have the best democracy of all per the new rules of democracy saving. The point isn't that they are strong by themselves, it's that they are making a serious contribution to their defense. That's why fraction of GDP is the important metric.

If they're smart, they'll divide the labor, possibly focusing on what they can do best. As an example, Australia knows it can't fight China on its own, so it focuses on helping an American effort by controlling the sea lanes that go by Australia.

Yep. Stock market has a vague correlation with teh actual economy. E.g. job flash results show that Americans, for the first time in many months are getting the jobs instead of foreigners filling them in the US.

What you are seeing is that the DJIA has put its money for decades on globo homo and now that whole strategy appears to be going up in smoke requiring restructuring operations, onshoring, and a variety of other copes instead of leaning on outsourcing, hiring cheap indentured laborers at home, and endless trade deficits.

Trump is trying to pull of a controlled implosion of the old crumbling globo homo New World order world to save the US. That means peace abroad, taking America and its interests first by elected officials, and also by business.

No. The stock market will have to correct, but it's not directly tied to tariffs.

It's tied to the inflationary dollars from all over the world parked in the US stock market.

The government massively inflated the stock market (indirectly, via printing money) during covid.

This sell off is being triggered because currently there are a lot of US dollars that foreign companies and governments hold, which they parked in our stock market. If that trade imbalance is affected (ie: with tariffs), then that money will flow back to US companies and the US government (in the form of tariffs).

Which will cause the US markets to go down.

Kind of unavoidable.

In addition, our tax laws have seriously maimed the older safe dividend model and incentivized capital gains in stock prices over sober financial judgment.

Also corporations have substituted debt instead of recruiting new capital via preferred shares, etc. which makes them more subject to the vagaries of deleveraging when times are bad.

Makes it a dangerous playing field for retirees if they rely on the market to meet their expenses. Killing the stupid tax on SS benefits might help.

Too many people who quote the invisible hand never actually read the original Wealth of Nations. Even fewer have read a Theory of Moral Sentiment on which the Wealth of Nations was based in part (self interest). Instead, most modern economists resemble idiots shouting out platitudes that have as much relationship with reality as Jedi Knights do.

In this debased age, as a scholar, I took to actually using original sources for most of my work because the supposed betters in academia kept adding shit or deleting qualfiers to the original works. In most cases, it became apparent they had never actually read much of what they were citing.

Just downloaded the Babylonian Talmud for a project. Not looking forward to it in a sense but necessary to properly ground my research first.

Large deficits would conventionally drive interest rates up, but rates are artificially manipulated. We don't have a clear picture on what market rates would be.

Willowed but nope. Markets have not set Fed interest rates really in decades since the Big Put. Basically the Fed keeps interest rates below market rates by its securities buying and selling aka market operations.
