The Morning Rant: Minimalist Edition

punk-monkey.jpg

Arabs killing Christians? Nobody cares. Arabs killing Jews? Nobody cares. Arabs killing Arabs? Nobody cares.

Only when Jews or Christians kill Arabs, even during a just defensive war, does the world respond with its typical, fanatical calls for Restraint and Cease-fire and Return to former borders and Humanitarian Crisis and Disproportionate and even Genocide!

But real genocide happens all of the time, and often at the hands of Muslim Arabs, who seem to be involved in most sectarian killing across the world. The latest is in Syria, where the Great Hope of the Bien Pensant and The New York Times, Ahmed al-Shara, is turning out to be what anyone with a brain knew he would... Osama bin Laden in a crappy suit and a trimmed beard. Be careful what you wish for! Is he al-Qaeda? ISIS? Only his barber knows for sure, but the Christians being murdered by his terrorists-turned-Syrian-patriots probably don't care. Sure, he is knocking off the Alawites too, because they supported the Assad regime and their brand of Islam isn't quite savage enough for him and his psychotics. And who is next? The Druze? The Kurds? Sure! That will help Turkey, which is playing its usual game of talking out of both sides of its mouth...publicly declaring Hay'at Tahrir al-Sham a terrorist organization while privately supporting them. And they got what they wanted...Assad fell, and Syria is being run by their pet terrorist group.

Massacres without mercy in Syria -- The new Islamic regime is targeting Alawites & Christians

Northern Syria, especially the part towards the Mediterranean coast, is in the throes of an extremely bloody conflict with massacres against Alawites and Christians alike by the Turkish-backed Islamic regime and its jihadist militants.

The ethnic cleansing, which threatens to destabilize once again the country that has experienced endless warfare for 15 years, is unfolding under the gaze of the international community, which condemns but for now has not gone beyond…recommendations for “restraint“. The United States and Russia have, however, called for the United Nations Security Council to meet on Monday, behind closed doors to discuss the escalating violence.

The latest tally from the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights puts the death toll at least 1,311 in recent days. Of these, more than 830 were civilians, mostly Alawites, the majority of whom were executed. More than 480 are the armed dead from both sides.

Nobody cares about the Arabs being murdered by other Arabs, and certainly nobody cares about the Christians being murdered. Oh, there will be meetings and talk of boycotts and there will absolutely be a stern lecture from some United Nations functionary about the opportunity for peace and prosperity now that the Assad regime has fallen.

But very little will be done, and Syria will become another dysfunctional Muslim dictatorship, whose thugs will cruise around the country killing anyone they dislike or whose religion is inconvenient. Sort of like how it was under Assad, only nastier.

Israel was vilified when, soon after Hay'at Tahrir al-Sham conquered Syria, they entered the country and established a buffer zone, because unlike the naive and foolish NYT, Israel knows what Jihad means and what can happen. If al-Shara of the trimmed beard would send his henchmen to kill Muslims and Christians, what would he do with Israelis? Oh, Israel also destroyed the majority of the Syrian army's weaponry, because fanatical 7th century maniacs with missiles is a bad combination.

But the problem for Christians remains, and absent an Israeli invasion of Syria, who is going to protect them? The United Nations? The Pope? The American Army? The EU?

Maybe we can convince Putin to send troops...after all, he was a supporter of Assad!

A sad story in the Middle East replicated in other nations like Iraq is that Christians and other minority religious sects supported dictators for life as a survival technique against Sunni desires to kill them all. Now those dictators have fallen, supporters from the regime face vengeance for supporting the dictators and the natural impulse of Sunnis to exterminate others to purify their umma.
Something similar happened at the end of the Ottoman Empire where the Armenians got slaughtered among other minorities that used to be formally protected from Sunni savages by sultans.

Assad's fall was always going to result in bloody revenge on those that supported him just as the few remaining Christians and other minority sects got the heck out of Iraq before the same was done to them.

Copts in Egypt were on that road to extinction had the Muslim Brotherhood kept running it.

47 Muslims are the problem.

Anywhere they have power, they violently repress everyone else.

Anywhere they don't have power, they violently attack everyone else unless they are violently repressed themselves. (See: China) (Disclaimer*)

For all the evil that China is and does, they understand that they cannot allow Islam to operate freely or it will destroy them.

Disclaimer: If the population of Muslims is below ~5%, they will pretend to just want to live out their lives. Once they reach ~10% is when the violence starts. Europe is already experiencing this.

Posted by: long night...lifted

Assad's rule was failing anyway and part of it was the desire for vengeance by the majority Sunnis from being excluded from power and being slaughtered. I think there are also players in the Middle East regarding pipelines going through Syria, the interests of Erdogan in Turkey aimed at killing Kurds and promoting Turkish interests there. Etc.

Place has been a mess for decades now like Lebanon was for thirty years or so due both to a mix of internal populations that hate each other and outside countries with interests for economics and security.

He then choose to support the jihadis.

Now, Assad is a horrible human and leader and was a Soviet/Russian ally, so during the cold war this was reasonable, but with the collapse of the Soviets, Assad is less of a thread than the Jihadis are. You could argue Assad deserved to be punished for supporting the Jihadis in Iraq during the WoT, but that only works if you explicitly say that.

So as usual, Obama made the worst choice he could have made at each step from the perspective of American interests.

Three reasons:

1. Tech was up huge over the last 12 months. Any bad news was gonna trigger a correction.

2. Some tech companies were drastically and obviously over-valued even before any talk of tariffs. Tesla, Nvidia, etc. They were gonna come back to Earth no matter what.

A variant of standard old bigotry which is akin to racism, ethnicism based on language or culture, etc. People across the political divide can and have used it as a means to get power in whatever society. Orval Faubus ran a socialist college for awhile and was fine with black students, etc. when it was not a thing in the South. But, put him in as governor, he won multiple terms as the governor fighting Uncle Sam for segregation forever to his personal profit and power and eternal shame.

Wallace did something similar in Alabama but managed the trick of achieving a form of redemption by simply stripping and discarding his old mask. An American Talleyrand as it were--the unprincipled scoundrel as a political leader.

149 Three reasons:

1. Tech was up huge over the last 12 months. Any bad news was gonna trigger a correction.

2. Some tech companies were drastically and obviously over-valued even before any talk of tariffs. Tesla, Nvidia, etc. They were gonna come back to Earth no matter what.

3. Some big tech companies are dependent on China and thus could be affected by tariffs. Apple, for one.

And a bonus 4th reason: people are stupid and overreact to market-related news, whether it's good or bad.

Posted by: Elric Blade

You are on the mark. I would just add that many tech companies are so incredibly overvalued that it would take multiple decades of earnings to cover the stock price, which is not rational. Some people are finally waking up to this.

Yes. Poland voted out the pro-Polish political party and voted in the pro-globalist pro-EU political party, with lots and lots of assistance from abroad.

Because it's Poland, they haven't been able to implement the full EU agenda yet (like mass importation of Muslims), but they will get there, given enough time.

Personally, I think politics is better described as a cartesian 2-d graph of two axes (from libertarian guru Nolan) using personal freedom and economic freedom as its axes. This gives better positioning of pols than a simple right left which is a current day reference to the politics of the French legislature prior to and during the Revolution.

184 The Brits marvel, at least once an episode, on how dysfunctional the Reich is - yet they occupy England.

The German military was pretty well organized and oddly the early impact of Hitler on them was giving bright minded reformers more influence. Later, of course, his influence was mostly bad for them.

And the German government was mostly run by clowns and psychopaths but relied on the traditional German submissiveness to authority (kind of like the current German National Socialist government amusingly enough)

But how the Germans end up with a large enough military force on the British mainland to conquer them is...hard to believe, unless, I guess, they fully ally with the Soviets (and actual possibility historically) and ditch the Japanese so that they don't have to worry about the American Navy and the Soviets can take British India/Middle East.

AI is part of it and index funds are the rest of it. AI has the potential to unlock a vast fortune to those that can master its implications (even as expert systems applied narrowly to specific tasks). Google and Microsoft are legacy software companies desperately trying to keep their companies relevant by surging into the AI marketplace (Gemini re Google and Open AI re Microsoft). Netflix is commonly bundled with both companies as a 'tech' company.

So we have Deepseek by Chinese indicating that US companies might not become #1 in AI (first mover advantage), we have government uncertainty regarding the effects of cuts on investment (including AI) and consumers, and we have a disruption of trade regime of the last 70 years or so via Trump tariffs aimed at overturning those trans national patterns. Result: uncertainty.

I disagree. Not when any company can simply elect to not pay a dividend because - well - because they said so. Hence, Ford.

I bought a fair amount, varying between $12 and $14 a share, when they paid fifteen cents every quarter. There was a measurable ROI there.

And then they simply announced - "No". They would no longer pay that dividend. So why own it ? What's the value, other than finding another sucker that would pay more ?

207 I disagree.

Some people believe in total return investing, where they don't want dividends at all, just capital returns, and sell shares when they want cash. They believe this is beneficial from a taxable income standpoint.

I am not one of them, I expect a return in cold hard cash, and dividends are much less volatile than stock prices.

Posted by: Archimedes
========
I follow tech somewhat. Past several months, NVidia fluffed its launch of the 50 series of graphics cards (about 17-20 percent of revenue) but more seriously its Blackwell AI chips have some issues regarding power and durability and NVidia has to have them made by TSMC.

The demand for silicon wafers has exploded from all users which drives up raw material prices and Chinese Deepseek AI model which allegedly achieved results using cheap chips undermines the idea that NVidia will dominate AI chip supply in the future like they have the graphics chip market in video. So Nvidia's huge investment in Blackwell may result in significantly less demand than projected and higher costs (wafers). Drives the price premium down.

Over the long term stocks increase at a higher rate then just about any other investment, so this is sound advice.

But diversify. If you buy tech stocks (and you should), get manufacturing stocks too. And put some money in bonds, high yield savings accounts/CDs, and REITs to balance it out.

Also remember my comment last week or so about brokers and "professional" money managers. Some get paid by the trade. All want to show lots of trading to justify their existence. There is a built in advantage to capital gains versus dividends. Dividends are double taxed--at the corporate and individual level. Capital gains are only taxed at the individual level so far. In addition, tax laws benefit leveraging debt rather than issuing preferred or common stocks for expansion and mergers. In some cases, where no suitable investment is seen, companies actually buy back their own stock to drive the price up using borrowed money to do so. That tends to benefit the price only traders at the expense of long haul investors.

Not quite. And it appears that Deep Seek runs pretty well on less computer resources than required by its competitors right now. Part of that was apparently reliance on specific machine language coding optimizations for certain cpus that the models relying on CUDA do not have.

In a court filing, the Justice Department has dropped its earlier demand for Google to sell off its stakes in AI companies, which was aimed at bolstering competition in online search.

Instead, the company will now need to notify antitrust enforcers prior to any further AI investments, allowing for a review of such transactions.

272 AI. It wears me out. According to current definition, writing industrial software that can modify its own constants is AI. I did that twenty years ago, and trust me, nobody ran out to give me a start-up company and a cash transfusion.

Because they shouldn't have. Its just the software equivalent of self-adjusting breaks. Negative feedback. Tried and true shit in a slightly new form. No patents required or deserved.

AI reminds me of 5S and Six Sigma. Just another bullshit jargon term for the managerial class.

Depends. Intel has the advantage of being produced here to some degree and being a trustworthy partner for the US. Still has massive cpu sales in laptops and desktops for now. AMD primarily sells to individuals rather than manufacturers and like AMD in graphics, it runs a distant second in volume of chips actually sold. The major threat that AMD poses to Intel is in the most profitable minicomputer/server market with its EPYC chips going against the older Xenon chips. AMD is getting some serious increases in cpu share at this level which is costing Intel far more in profits than the stagnant desktop/laptop market. Intel (and to some extent AMD) have so far fluffed on their AI NPU chips with Gaudi being ignored by the market and the Ryzen HPCs not gaining any traction versus Blackwell. Primarily because Nvidia has a huge developer advantage.

Intel has a new chip making process and stories floated vary regarding the new 18A process which is VERY different approach to making chips using TSMC process.

They do but organizations not based on the profit incentive often buy those extra seat licenses regardless of usage because the resources used are 'free' to them. Libraries are a classic example with their e-databases based on seats. Send out a vague survey to faculty, students, etc. asking about usage and most people, who aren't directly paying the cost, will say sure, I might use that new XYZZ database of Chinese chemistry publications.

Trump is cancelling the remainder of Biden's Chips program,’

I know it must have sucked since it came from Biden, but what was specifically wrong with it.

Multi billion dollar give away to corporations already flush with cash.

--------------

That CHIPS program (stage one thinking) incentivized China to dump tens of billions of (dollars equivalent) into their own chip manufacturing -- which will create glut of Chinese semiconductors and put downward pressure on their prices worldwide (harming American chip manufacturers) -- thus distorting the global market, cutting off a major market for chip exports, and reducing China’s dependency on American manufacturing.

339 The board gave up on it and fired Gelsinger, so the strategy seems to be selling the company in pieces. Which is strategically bad, but it might accelerate adoption of Windows on ARM if someone makes chips for it that aren't as mediocre as Qualcomm's.

=======
The promise of ARM is like that of fusion. Works well enough for phones but due to it having to work with Windows that has been optimized for decades for CISC cpus, that is a rough lift.

There are many examples of technically 'better' being defeated by cheap and good enough in tech history. TSMC and Intel are not going to be a merger probably because of nat sec concerns which leaves Broadcom/Qualcomm as potential buyers but neither really wants the foundry which requires massive amounts of capital investment and has a smaller profit percentage compared with chip design. Global Foundries, and even Samsung are stumbling here partially because TSMC has the premier customer base right now and is able to leverage its current top cpu mfg techniques to essentially remove the most profitable cream from the market for other foundrys.

340 Christianity canonized a lot of saints-by-martyrdom in the pre-Constantine days and long thereafter during its proselytizing spread. And a lot of fast days commemorating the atrocious slaughter of their Christian forebears.

It's time to bring that back and make new ones from contemporary events. Official is official and then let others put two and two together.

341 Decreased government spending is inversely proportional to consumer spending. That isn't the issue I think.

President Trump is keeping business rocked back on its heels. How can they plan for the future when tariffs are being changed every day.

Once it calms down, the markets will probably calm down as well.

When you subtract G from C+I+G+Nx from the GNP equation, you do not necessarily get more C or I immediately and markets live mostly in the short run. That is going to hit specific companies and households that previously were making bucks by contracting to government.

The two transitions that I studied years ago in econ were that of WWI and WWII where the US economy had to transition to war and then back again to the peace time economy. Both were jumpy--WWI ending resulted in a very big mini Depression until the transition was complete and WWII (from policymakers wanting to avoid the WWI drop) instead pushed the US into massive inflation and debt suppression of consumer spending to get rid of the debt overhang from WWII.

343 Commies hate Christians. Diversity is our strength is bs commies spread. No real nation believes this shit. Look at Korea or Japan. Look at their poor, poverty stricken cultures. Look at Norway, Sweden, Finland, Scotland. Without Muslims and blacks they were so poor, now they have rape, crime, poverty. And divisions galore.
