The subject of The Oceanids (The Naiads of the Sea) is from the ancient Greek tragedy Prometheus Bound, traditionally attributed to Aeschylus. The painting depicts a group of Oceanids—ocean nymphs from Greek mythology—gathered at a rock in the ocean.

Speaking of boobies...
I watched 'Anyone But You' on Netflix last night. Easily the worst romantic 'comedy' to be shat out upon the small screen in the past five years. Of course the story revolved around a lesbian/mixed-race wedding, because of course it did. But on the plus side, Sydney Sweeney and her ample bosom are figured prominently throughout. So there's that. Today's art offering reminded me of that, somehow. Posted by: Grapefruit LaCroix at March 13, 2025 09:35 AM (xPSmT) 33

Hard to trust any news out of Russia/Ukraine, but the story out of Kursk is likely true. Still it’s a measure as to how pathetically weak Russia’s army’s have become (contra those who think they are about to overrun Europe). Given that both sides had homelands to defend, Lee could not simply reproduce Washington's later Fabian tactics because war had changed into something more industrial by that point. Plus South did not have France or UK dropping into the war like France did for the US. Absent perhaps a swift decapitation strike on DC or McClellan winning as president in 1864, I think the South would have lost anyway. This is wonderful. I'm so used to seeing Dore's etchings in classic literature (the Bible, The Ancient Mariner which is haunting, Paradise Lost, and many others) I forgot he also painted. This one captures his superb depiction of human anatomy (yes, I like the female nudes) as well as the mythological aspects. The women's languid, fluid poses reflect the movement of water. They belong in the ocean. I also like the many shades of blue in the water and sky, which are always in motion, against the solidity of the rocks and even the physical forms of the women. Posted by: Sebastian Melmoth ======== That is why uniparty grifters keep recapturing the GOP. Times get good, voters on the Right ignore cowardice, incompetence, and thievery, from their officeholders. I think a lot of the people on the Right simply want to be left alone and vote mainly to keep government off their backs. On the left, government is their idol and religion as Big Daddy dispensing goodies. Only way for the Right to win is destroy the machine and that means places like Ukraine, Euroland, etc. have to tend for themselves. The Cold War is over and both the Russians and the US lost. The Russians had their noses rubbed in it but to many of those on the Right of a certain age still can't keep from reverting back to Muh Cold War victory. At best, it was a pyrrhic victory where we lost our freedoms at home so that Eastern Euros could be free for a time. Posted by: whig at March 13, 2025 10:25 AM (ctrM5) 262

Criticized for being slow and methodical, but he also was in either full command or operational command of both of the total routes inflicted by Federal Troops on the Confederacy, being Missionary Ridge and Nashville. Also rescued the Federal Army by a brilliant last second defense at Chickamauga.
Almost unique among civil war generals, he was criticized by other officers for taking such pains in his battle plans to keep his own troops casualties to a minimum. US Grant never liked him. Posted by: Tom Servo at March 13, 2025 10:28 AM (uWKK8) 278

My favorite General was old stick' in the mud Gen'l George Thomas.
I fully understand that the US intervening in Ukrainian politics in 2014 was both counterproductive and ensured that Russia increased its animosity toward the Ukrainian state which is exactly what the CIA etc. wanted. But Putin took the bait because he cannot discard the programming of a lifetime about mythical Slav unity and traditional sphere of influence politics. He got a lot of Russians killed. Zelensky should have made a deal after the decap strike failed, and Putin set back Russian society several decades in economic development to gain Lebensraum using Russian blood and treasure to do so. I find justifications for stupid wars of choice from people here equally appalling. Posted by: Anonosaurus Wrecks, Soldier of the Persistence at March 13, 2025 10:31 AM (L/fGl) Franklin is the saddest battle of the entire war, I think. Although technically a win for the Confederacy, their entire remaining officer corps was wiped out there. It reads as though they knew they were losing the war, and so the entire army decided to go out in one last blaze of Seppuku rather than accept defeat. They charged and charged fortified union lines until the Federal Army ran out of ammunition and had to retreat, but the cost to them was horrific. In re Civil War tactics, the siege of Vicksburg, and similar battles, saw the development of trench warfare, so not all Civil War generals lined up their men to be shot. Nathan Bedford Forrest, on the Southern side, used high mobility forces to arrive at any battle “fastest with the mostest”. Thank God he didn’t turn to guerrilla tactics at the end of the war or fighting would have gone on intermittently for decades.

But Ukraine is a war where nobody looks good. Euroland, our Defense establishment, Putin, Ukraine, etc. About the only one benefitting strategically from the bloodletting from men and money is China. Putin has objected to NATO encroachment on Russia for many years. This is not something that just occurred a couple years ago. Everyone in the foreign policy world knew it because Putin said it over and over, NATO membership for Ukraine would cross his red line. 358 I believe Putin didn’t want Lebensraum. He wanted back country to support the port at Sebastopol. Putin wants to secure access to the Black Sea for Russia, and by and large he has accomplished this. I support neither side and in fact wish a pox on both houses. It would be good for remnant Ukraine to secure the port at Odessa.

"The End of History" in fact ... Posted by: ShainS ====== And yet, GHWB promptly involved us in nasty little actions in Somalia, The Gulf War, and Panama to set up a noxious New World Order. Simply put, if the US is to retain being a republic, we have to put away childish intentions to try to control the world around us by military power, subterfuge, and 'soft power'. The nature of a republic over time gets degraded when you add imperial trappings to it and it inevitably ends up with overextension, bankruptcy, and wars. I prefer another way. The president of Poland is out today saying he wants US nuclear missiles in his country. That seems just a tad provocative, no? Posted by: JackStraw ========== Tusk can ask, provocate, etc. but I don't think Trump has any intention in sending him nukes and the idea of moving US NATO bases out of Germany to Hungary is actually a disengagement move. Orban is the odd man out in Euroland (aside from the prezzie of Slovenia) and wants a peaceful relationship with Russia. So does Meloni in Italy. And my guess is that Putin ends up with most of Ukraine because he is in the driver's seat and Ukraine is collapsing just like Afghanistan did with the Taliban. When people no longer want to fight and die to keep a country; it will fold. Posted by: whig at March 13, 2025 11:09 AM (ctrM5) 404

It was Clinton who expanded the mission and then ran like a pussy . Posted by: Sebastian Melmoth ====== I don't care whether it was 'humanitarian' or not. Leave that shit to the UN if you must--our troops are not and should not be social workers of the World. The problems of the Horn of Africa and its awful societies are not solvable by mres and American troops. To reorder a society, you have to forcibly colonize and run the place for something more than 20-30 years and it helps if the place had civilization once like Germany, Japan or S. Korea. While running the place as a colonizer, you have to be ruthless and play internal games of divide and conquer with factions like the British did or simply ignore them and exploit like the French and Belgians did. Not a game worth playing and as a result, you have large Somalian colonies in the US in ME and Minnesota and a POS like Illhan Omar in Congress. Doesn't strike me as success from GHWB's adventure.
