22 Guy on the left froze his tail off....

Posted by: muldoon at March 14, 2025 09:35 AM (/iMjX)

23 That stormy sky (well, it is clearing a bit) lends a foreboding and chill air to the scene. As it should be for a painting called Two Horses in the Snow.

The one on the left has had his/her tail bobbed? And since the one on the right has such thickly-haired fetlocks, I'm inclined to think this is a breed suited to cold climates, perhaps in Scotland.

31 Come to think of it, both equines are rather stocky, without being as small as a Shetland or as large as a Clydesdale or Percheron. More clues that they are bred for this kind of weather.

76 I saw the darnedest thing on Wednesday, driving through Flagstaff on I-40.

The grassy and occasionally tree-lined median between the EB and WB lanes varies in spots and can be 50 - 100 yards wide.

Around 9:30 am I spotted a beautiful herd of four or five dozen elk huddled together in a group, like on an island, many lying down and some just looking around like "How the f*ck are we gonna get out of here with all these vehicles whizzing by on both sides?"

I'm guessing they crossed over the EB lanes (from the southern wilderness) during the middle of the night with little traffic.

In hindsight, I probably should have called the local police or state troopers (I'm guessing one or more other drivers did) as it could be quite a public safety issue if the herd bolted or decided to try and cross back over the freeway; maybe they could have arranged a temporary traffic break and coaxed them somehow "off of the island" ...

The pony had to whisper with great force
Which made his voice come off as rather coarse

It's not my fault, I'm just a little hoarse."

Posted by: BignJames at March 14, 2025 09:52 AM (Yj6Os)

82 I do like this kind of rural 18th century British scene. (John Constable, anyone?) They are what I think of as 'atmospheric' rather than highly realistic. In this painting there is no missing the cold weather of the scene: the way the horses are standing, the horse with his back to the wind, the crust of snow on the dead tree, and the crystal look of the snow indicating extreme cold. Very observant and effective.

George Morland was apparently a bit of a wastrel but his rural scenes are worth the time to look at.

116 Speaking of horses, I once knew a rancher who had a couple of old, broken down Shetland ponies. They were so docile and inactive that sparrows would actually build nests in their manes and raise their baby birds until they were ready to leave the nest. He told me that he had come upon an old folk remedy for this type of problem. He would take a cup or two of his wife's sourdough starter and massage it deeply into the ponies' manes first thing every spring. Problem solved. When I asked him how he had come up with this solution he said, "Well son, you know what they say...

"Yeast is yeast, and nest is nest and never the mane shall tweet!"

In her collection of short comic pieces, Please Don't Eat the Daisies, Jean Kerr included a parody of French ennui-laden "modern" fiction (modern as of the late Fifties, that is). The tone of it can be measured by the opening line, "The sky was as blue as a bruise," and by the female narrator's lover, who was named "Banal." Funny stuff.

The media is cheering all these orders, like it's business as usual. "Ha, ha! Trump loses!!"

And, "what do you mean it's illegal to cut this crazy spending? I pay my taxes and I don't get shit back."

If I were to take it seriously, I'd say that it's emblematic about how leftists don't believe anything politicians say.

So, when a politician promises something, it's understood that he doesn't mean a word of it.

Trump promised everything he's doing. Literally everything. And people voted for him.

So, to assume that the people who voted for him are unhappy is to assume that the people who voted for him didn't believe what he said.

I'd always just accepted as it was the way things were.

But the Constitution opens "We the People ..."

So, it seems to me, that it's not the courts that should decide Constitutional question, but the People.
That the 10th should have been the 1st default method for determination of Constitutionality.
I'd rather a state nullify a law, then the issue would be put to and decided by the people as a whole.

Learned reading a biography of Truman that he had no VP during his first term. The custom was that the VP became President and the office of Vice President was vacant for the remainder of the term.

Truman had to pick a VP to run with for his second term (Alben Barkley). The last person to become POTUS this way was Lyndon Johnson, and he had no VP during the remainder of his first term either, after which Hubert Humphrey became his second term VP.

Which we always hated from people like Tim Scott when he'd vote for cloture but against the bill. The vote against the bill is meaningless if you voted for cloture and the bill passes.

The problem is that this pisses off only the politically connected and everyone forgets it anyway by the time elections come around.

I remember predictions that Republicans would never win an election again because they "allowed the passage" of the Infrastructure bill in Biden's term.

--
As someone pointed out--and it's a brilliant observation--the average Democrat doesn't think their views are political at all, they think they're just common sense.

And that's a whole mindset that it foreign to us: We at least recognize our views are political, that there are alternatives.
They, however, can't even begin to understand why everyone doesn't agree with them.

Thanks.
