Al Green Censured, but 198 Democrats Vote Against Censure;
They Surround Him and Sing "We Shall Overcome"

It's Selma all over again. Any time you punish a black person for violating the rules or the law, it's Selma all over again.

It's a violation of civil rights to ever find fault with a black person. That's the true meaning of "racial equality."

Question: Green was ordered to stand in the well of the House and accept his censure.

Instead, he coordinated a mass protest against the censure and had his fellow diseased thugs sing for his glory.

He therefore defied the Congress. Is there a way to escalate this, then?

Congressmen can be excluded from Congress.

That guy who does the Cope files says that Al Green only won a Congressional seat because voters believed he was the Al Green. He said that there's video of people doing man-on-the-street interviews in his district, asking them why they voted for Al Green. And people said, "Because it's Al Green, man!"

They did not mean "it's the guy who CaliGirl says has 'the werewolf disease,' man!"

Dude looks like a werewolf and carries a cane. It's like he wants us to know about his savage nocturnal proclivities.

I managed at the time because Obama was in fact lying about the Citizen's United ruling with the justices of Scotus right there. Decorum means not lying about people right in front of their faces without them being able to politely respond. Joe Wilson simply did it for them as restorative justice.

This is why Hillary didn't have to cheat in Nevada to win the 2016 primary and the efforts to crown Kamala in January of 2019 lead to an easy victory for her.

The vaunted powers of the "elite" within the party to manipulate their own primary process is greatly oversold and diminishing with time.

They rely on rigged elections, and when you have to go through some place like SC which has relatively clean elections, well...the manipulation stops working.

EU leader touts major new defence plan at emergency summit
EU President Ursula von der Leyen said Europe was at a “watershed moment” as she touted an unprecedented $860bn defence plan to bolster the bloc’s military defences, reaffirm support for Ukraine and plug the gap left by the US’ freeze on aid. Published On 6 Mar 2025

Germany, France, and Britain have a combined defense budget of around $200B so I wonder how many years this supposed new defense plan is going to run for. If it really is a one year plan then that would put Europe on par with the US defense budget which I do not believe.

211 I support his efforts but it may have been counterproductive.

normalizing this shitgibbon isn't very productive, either. What hurt the effort here was that Al Green stood up alone.

With Democrats sitting while Rep Green was removed he was able to be portrayed as 'just another uppity black man' by the right.

the cult knows why Blacks are opposed to having a racist for president and they think it's funny. I've heard them joking about how upset Blacks are at efforts to claw back the civil rights movement -- they literally take it as "retribution" for being "uppity."

Anyone who has survived an abusive relationship knows sitting quietly does not work. Narcissists are going to do their thing, no matter what the reaction is. You will not "nice" them into anything.

Disgraceful. 10 dems voted for censure, trying to appear "reasonable" to their purple districts. In normal circumstances, I'd agree that the President deserves minimal respect when giving the State of the Union address -- but there's NOTHING normal about our reality now!

A constitutional amendment at this time is basically impractical because a mere 13 states (or even 13 legislative chambers in each state) can block it.

This is one of those things where we cannot get back to an ideal yesteryear (repealing popular election of senators is another such conundrum).

By the time that the 17th was adopted, a large majority of states used popular referenda to pick their senators due to legislative dysfunction in picking senators from the Civil War until the 17th was adopted. Repealing that would only return to that practice is my guess.

Easier to just do what Trump is doing and defund and defang the government in DC. Repealing the income tax in return for a tariff revenue would be more doable and arguably have a bigger impact.

This is not so easy. One complaint is that with such a scheme rural populations are always distributed and diluted.
The goal is to create "cohesive" sub units, say 10x the number of seats or more, and then just keep combining them with adjacent like units until the target population is reached.
It is doable but it is more complicated than our dumbed down system can accomplish.

Fun fact - Gerrymandering is as old as the country. NJ's Passaic county is one example, with a northern rural lobe intended to dilute the urban southern lobe.

I think the real fix is to eliminate all outside district campaign financing.

Studied under a name in that field who was hired nationally as a consultant in redistricting cases. Stack, pack, and crack was his term for redistricting. Some districts are stacked with a partisan imbalance for the majority party in the leg, the disadvantaged party has its partisans packed into few districts at nearly 90 percent or so, and strongholds of the disadvantaged party are cracked and dispersed into multiple losing districts when combined with stacking.

312 Supposedly Al Green's reason for shaking his Canes, shouting at the clouds, and wearing an onion on his belt (at the time, it was the fashion) was to protest "Trump cutting Medicaid".

I posted the below at legal insurrection, but I'll repeat it here.....

The elephant in the room for this incident is that Trump has repeatedly said he has no intention to reduce benefits for Medicaid. Or Medicare. Or Social Security. But once again (D) use the idea of (R)s want to push wheelchair bound folks over the edge of cliffs to cut costs. Ohhh, scary!

In fact, it was the (D)s who fiddled with how we determine cost-of-living by understating inflation to keep benefit increases low. It was NY’s own (D) governor who saved his state millions in costs by seeding uninfected nursing homes with COVID infected elders, reducing the “surplus population” as Ebenezer Scrooge might put it.

In fact, by making SS benefits and tips untaxed Trump will give a huge boost to many low income and elderly folks in 2025.

Now, he’s stated he want to cut costs, yes – but by going after FRAUD.
How many 150 year-old folks are still getting mailed SS checks?

323 That was their best idea, the one they thought resonated the most.

And they lost every swing state.

So now their brilliant idea is to run spin-offs of that ad?

It was so lame. It was the "Jerk Store" to Trump's "Kamala is for they/them" ad.

330 In fact, by making SS benefits and tips untaxed Trump will give a huge boost to many low income and elderly folks in 2025.

Now, he’s stated he want to cut costs, yes – but by going after FRAUD.
How many 150 year-old folks are still getting mailed SS checks?
How many docs are billing for procedures that aren’t performed
Posted by: BobM

Trump is being sly here. Basically the best social welfare program is promoting work. The trival tax revenues gained from retirees and waitresses in tips is outweighed negative consequences. Trump should go further and repeal the implicit reduction of benefits for those collecting SS but continuing to work from 62-70.

342 Say, start at the southeastern-most point of the state, draw a proportional square starting from that point large enough to contain the population of a voting district. Then add more squares with the same populatoin (which will be of different sizes, obviously) bordering the first one. Lather, rinse, repeat.

Divide the state into tiny grids, adjusted to be on streets and all that. Get the demographics of all of them. Parties alternate first in placing the center of the district on the state map in a reasonable spot, or moving it. Each placement has requirements to assure a relatively "correct" placement of centers

Then parties take turns assigning the small areas to a district, by adding from the center of a district marker or adjacent to another area touching a marker. As the districts fill in each district is checked for shape quality, perimeter to area and other simple checks. You could add a demographics check as well here but presumably the selection will help. A final cleanup and you are done and out in the open.

344 We have campaign finance laws, so this would just change that.
People would still have freedom of speech, as they do now, just not freedom to give money to candidates.

Posted by: bob
=====
Doesn't work that way. Buckley allowed for limits on contributions despite it being a technical violation of the first amendment (blame Tinker v. Des Moines School District for adding symbolic speech as protected). Thus, the court struck down limits on candidate expenditures as unconstitutional in Buckley but upheld some contribution limits due to the appearance of corruption.

A 2000 era Missouri Scotus decision allowed even draconian state limits on contributions but not allowing citizens of the US outside of a district most likely would not fly as constitutional as they can argue that it affects them, the national parties ditto, etc. etc. CU specifically continued to rule that limiting money was limiting speech core in Buckley v. Valeo. That is why Scotus also refuses to allow any limits on self funded candidates as even the figleaf of preventing corruption does not apply there. They equate contribution limits on a self funded candidate as limiting that candidate's own speech.

Easier to just elect representatives at large in each state. No legal issues per se but pita for voting on ballots in a large populous state. Basically, somewhere like California with 52 seats, you would get 52 votes to apply to candidates. There are variants to the scheme but does not violate the VRA nor does it violate the US Constitution.

Posted by: whig at March 06, 2025 05:30 PM (ctrM5)

347 Why do we need "voting districts" anyway?

"Equal representation?" Hardly. It was quaint at one time, but it's a monster now. I'd ditch it.

See what happens. We used to be "The Great Experiment."
Posted by: Martini Farmer at March 06, 2025 05:13 PM (Q4IgG)

It has nothing to do with equal representation, the citizen needs to be assigned 1-1 with one election and one representative so he can punish that fellow if he screws up. Thinking you might want to end up with candidates matching the ethnicity of the area is voluntary by the parties.
