  • Citigroup needed to credit $280 to a customer's account. They instead credited $81 trillion. (MSN)

That used to be a lot.
Regarding Citi's transformation, the company spent $11.8 billion on technology in 2024, CFO Mark Mason said during its Q4 2024 earnings call in January. The focus was on "digital innovation, new product development, client experience and other areas such as cybersecurity," Mason said.
They forgot "noticing individual transactions that approach the global GDP".

Two employees approved the transaction and it was deposited into the customer's account before it was noticed and reversed 90 minutes later.

    Which raised the question: How?

4 Evening and morning to all the early risers and late toilers on this Ash Wednesday, Woden's Day!

Pixy, I've always wondered how cyclones travel in the Southern Hemisphere. They begin fairly close to the equator, I suppose, as in the north. But ours travel in a generally west-to-northwest direction. The Wiki entry on the 1974 Darwin storm indicates that it traveled roughly *south*westward (until it turned and went SE and hit Darwin). This Brisbane one, did it travel roughly southwestward too?

A lady I knew once from Sao Paolo, Brazil, said she'd never heard of a hurricane hitting there. I guess the bulge of Brazil prevents most storms from affecting them?

9 So we did our first Shrove Tuesday Pancake dinner at the church last night.

Wonderful food.

Delicious pancakes. As much sausage and stuff as one could ever eat. All topped off with a fresh donut.

Then too tired to stay up for The Donald flame-spraying the Democrats in his speech.

And for the first time since July, maybe...the terrible heartburn that used to plague me almost nightly before my efforts to reduce carbohydrates and lose weight.

I guess it was a warning to me to not lose focus on how my health has changed since June, and to stay focused on diet and exercise.

11 $81 Trillion? I can't be the only person with bank alerts on their phone. If I saw that total pop up, I'd call a family member who happens to be a tax accountant, figure a good place to protect the loot from a clawback while we put our thinking caps, and see what shenanigans we can cause. I'd try to hold on to _some_ of it, but the rest will go to the most photogenic and heartbreaking causes I can find. Go ahead, take the money away from the adorable little girl who is finally getting that hare lip fixed.

Yes, though again it wandered around quite a bit. I'm not sure if this is generally true or nobody cares much about the ones that stay out to sea and only bother the fish.

16 81 Trillion ... "That used to be a lot."

That running gag line of yours is particularly funny when used in this circumstance.

On a more serious note though, what this proves to me is something I've suspected for a while: The big banks can just create money by putting a number in a database entry. Their system should have refused to do a deposit that large without a corresponding matching series of withdrawals that totaled the deposit... But it didn't.

House. Of. Cards.

17 Way back in the late 80s or early 90s our bank in Israel at the time inadvertently credited our account for over a million shekels. I called them up to tell them that I think they made a mistake. We got a thank you and the bank took their money back.

It felt nice for a few minutes.

Before I yelled "Bah!" and throw my remote at the TV I had concluded Nvidia would have been wiser to have bought a bunch of 5070 stickers and stuck them on a 4090 card instead of wasting all that money on developing the 5070 in the first place.

30 I had a bank screw up and withdraw thousands from my account that weren't there. And then charge me an overdraft fee. And then charge me an even larger service fee for the privilege of having been charged an overdraft fee.

It took weeks of rather strident phone calls culminating in something very close to threats of impending doom to get it resolved.

And then the jumped up little prick on the phone had the nerve to chirpily ask me why i was canceling my account...

38 Heros from 2002 ranks right there in my favorite Bowie performances of all time. It just has a certain perfect groove that only masterful musicians can get out of their bands.

I only saw David Bowie perform one time and that was the only time I've been to a Broadway play where he was starring in The Elephant Man. It was complete dumb luck that I ended up with a matinee rush ticket in the second road dead center at half price. It wasn't until years later I realized how fortunate I was that day.

Let it burn, once and for all, so the real work of civilization can start up again by all the people this fake "West" has subjugated for generations. "The West" was a euphemism for Judeo/Christian ethics, Roman Catholicism in particular, to be distinguished by the Islam and pantheism of The East, but The West in terms of North America, largely Protestant Calvinist.

Once Calvinism was replaced by DIY Salvation (aka Free Will) ushered in by The Great Awakening, Charles Finney, Billy Sunday, et al, the collapse of Western Civilization began as Jesus was moved over from the left seat to be everyone's "Co Pilot".

And thus it was OK for each man to do what was right in his own eyes.

165 Was it really the thing to call Christendom "The West" in centuries past?

Yes, anything "West" of Constantinople. Particularly after Rome and Greek Orthodox went their own ways.

Rodney Stark, in his book "Victory of Reason" explains how a high trust society based on Roman Catholicism (Stark is/was a Baylor professor) allowed what became modern banking and international trade. Instead of shipping large quantities of gold that was expatriated out of Central American mines, and often lost to pirates or hurricanes, it was easier to use letters of credit.

There is a lot more, but the benefits of a high trust society based on the commonly held belief of eventual accountability by a transcendent judge went a long way in bringing the world modernity.

The Left prefers low or no trust, and look where that takes us.

245 Nvidia is selling the 5070 for 5070 prices but if you look at the specs it’s about where the 5060 should be in performance.

The reviews show the 5070 performance at around 4070 Super levels.

In a new architecture you’d expect the 70 class to perform as well as the previous generation 80 class.

So Nvidia has basically moved performance down on the stack but not the price.

The 5070 should be able to do 60 fps with full ray tracing at 1440p with non frame gen or upscaling.
That’s what’s expected of a 70 class card these days. And it only has 12GB of VRAM which is killing it for higher rez gaming.

No wonder people are so disappointed by this generation from Nvidia - pricing too high for lower tier performance.

And I think they’ll make a 5050 and sell it at 4060 pricing.

Look for another “Super”/series next year where Nvidia gets the stack right and pricing corrected like the did for the 4080 Super.

Just about every review I watched recommended waiting until today for the review of the 9070 & 9070XT from Radeon today.

Gamers Nexus and Hardware Unboxed look like they will recommend the Radeon card.

Steve from HUB did his review from the roof he was so disappointed in the 5070.

253 I *REALLY* would like to see the post-mortem analysis of that Citigroup foul-up. How something like this could even happen, against checks and balances and any validation the system should have.

Where did the 'source' of the trillions come from? Accounting is "credits and debits", taking from the Peter account/bucket to put into the Paul account/bucket. The customer didn't have trillions in actual physical items, but that line item going to their account had to be balanced from somewhere else.

Also, what was required to reverse it? Were those two responsible for the mistake able to do the reversal themselves? What guards, notes, and other things did they have to do, bureaucracy-wise, to get the system to roll back? If they couldn't, and had to do frantic calls to higher ups to get it reversed? Malicious employees could simply prepare people in places, cut several of these unbalanced deposits, have their goons withdraw, and then run for Mexico.

They'd be criminals, but rich criminals. After all, banks are where the money is, per Willie Sutton. And it's easier to rob when you're the inside man.
