Because many of them had sinecures?

sinecure
noun
a position requiring little or no work but giving the holder status or financial benefit
mid 17th century: from Latin sine cura ‘without care’.

14 So many protest groups out there this weekend. From Tesla/Musk groups (200) to Ukraine (another small group) and others parading in the streets. Everyone has a cause, and the police try and keep them from meeting. Most people ignore them except the environment people who get in you face and scream.
So I feel lonely, its to cold to parade for anything.

16 In my working career I was always under the impression that I could be called into the directors office and fired. Never happened, but I saw so many, many given a box and a security guard visit to their ex office. One company layed off 20 K and not of a peep from the local media. So I never had a forever job, but hung in there.

20 O.K People are talking about songs on the ONT. I always thought "Only the good die young" by Billy Joel was silly, the persona of the character singing it was irritating ( He wants to get into her pants so her mocks her RC religion?) who had a too high opinion of himself ( "you didn't count on me while you were counting on your rosary") with an abysmal knowledge of Catholic Saints/ quite a number of whom were quite joyful and actually were known for their humor. This is aside from the fact that it's stupid to say "Only the good die young" when goodness and the age of death are not necessarily connected. I suppose it rather a catchy tune, however and yes, I probably have thought too much about music lyrics.

Posted by: FenelonSpoke at March 03, 2025 04:50 AM (vocDY)

21 Aside from the fact that when are RC girls confirmed anyway-12 or 13? Even if her parents had "locked her away" for a few years that would make her about 15? Great age for a teen girl to have sex./s

31 Speaking of Billy Joel...on Spotify...

Uptown Girl - 1.1 billion plays
Piano Man - 966 million plays
Vienna - 733 million plays
We Didn't Start the Fire - 565 million plays
She's Always a Woman to Me - 434 million plays
Only the Good Die Young - 217 million plays
Allentown - 33 million plays

I think he might do OK in the music business.

35 Waldo Jaquith, a former 18F technologist, said that the federal government has been a good, reliable employer for generations. "What the jobs lack in salary are made up for in stability. Untold millions have been lifted into the middle class or kept out of poverty by having a single family member in a federal job. Now that's gone."

This is an interesting statement. A completely 'reliable' job is one that does not mean anything.

Posted by: Aetius451AD at March 03, 2025 05:38 AM (bss/y)

36 Meanwhile back in Australia

Wendy Matthews on Spotify
The Day You Went Away - 9.3 million plays
Let's Kiss Like Angles Do - 1.2 million plays
Token Angel - 1.2 million plays

AC/DC
Highway to Hell - 1.87 billion plays
Back in Black - 1.79 billion plays
Thunderstruck - 1.75 billion plays
You Shook Me All Night Long - 1.3 9 billion plays
T.N.T - 811 million plays
Hell's Bells - 466 million plays
Shoot to Thrill - 435 million plays
Dirty Deeds Done Dirty Cheap - 405 million plays
Its a Long Way to the Top - 304 million plays

On second thought Billy Joel should just quit and start driving a semi.

84 I remember liking a lot of Billy Joel's lyrics. "Only the Good Die Young," his nostalgic-for-the-Fifties "Keepin' the Faith," and his classic, "Piano Man." The latter is like a small modern short story -- no plot, but beautifully etched portraits of the patrons he observed at the lounge when he played piano there.

Oh, and "We Didn't Start the Fire" -- a trip through fifty years of American (and some world) history in, what, four and half minutes?

He's talking with Davy, who's still in the Navy, and probably will be for life. . . ."

Yeah, that couplet suggests the two guys might be gay. But I've never gotten that from the other portraits.

Funny, but the last time I heard that song on the oldies station here, it was edited to *remove* that couplet! Neatly; if you didn't know the song you'd never have noticed. But I did.

He was actually only just one of the standards of the time.

There were so many musicians and groups that were talented and prolific that challenged and on many occasions bested him musically.
