Sefton: sefton at cutjibnewsletter.com | Sunday Overnight Open Thread - March 2, 2025 [Doof]![]() Howdy Hordelings, and welcome to the first Sunday ONT of March! Did the month come in like a lion for you, or like a lamb? Is that still a thing? Anyway, there's plenty of fun and interesting stuff here for you. Come on in! Dots in the Nighttime Sky Did you see the "parade of planets" on Friday night? I looked for it. I saw a bunch of twinkling stuff in the sky. Some were probably planets. Couldn't really tell you. But it supposedly was pretty cool. Photo captures 7 planets in a line over Earth — possibly for the 1st time ever ![]() A stunning photo has captured all seven of our neighboring planets in Earth's sky at the same time, possibly for the first time ever. The composite image, captured by astrophotographer Josh Dury, shows Mars, Jupiter, Uranus, Saturn, Venus, Neptune and Mercury in alignment thanks to a rare "planetary parade" [which took] place this weekend for the first time since 1982. *** "Seven (arguably, 8 ) is a feat that to my prior knowledge has not been achieved before," Dury told Live Science in an email — suggesting that if we include Earth itself, visible in the foreground, the image's planet total comes to eight. "This image could hold a record for being the first of its kind to photograph all the planets of the solar system, blended into a stitched panoramic image." Dury captured the image just after sundown on Feb. 22 from The Mendip Hills — a range of limestone hills in Somerset in the U.K. To achieve this photographic feat, Dury created a composite shot made up of several panes, with each pane captured in multiple exposures. ![]() ![]() Legislation under the moniker “right to repair” has now been introduced in all 50 states, marking a major milestone in this grassroots consumer movement. GNN has reported on the march of right to repair laws across the US, but also the kind of entrepreneurialism they engender: like an aftermarket auto parts company that makes replacements for well-known faulty components in automobiles. Passed in New York, Minnesota, Colorado, California, and Oregon, Wisconsin just became the final US state to introduce some sort of right to repair laws. In broad terms, all of these bills would generally guarantee a consumer’s right to access replacement parts for devices and machines, repair manuals or other relevant documents for expensive products, diagnostics data from original manufacturers, and even in some cases, such as automobiles, appropriate tools necessary for maintenance. They may also ban the use of technological protection measures, sometimes called “software locks” that are designed to restrict repair only to authorized repair technicians. “Americans are fed up with all the ways in which manufacturers of everything from toasters to tractors frustrate or block repairs, and lawmakers are hearing that frustration and taking action,” Nathan Proctor, right to repair director for consumer rights group PIRG, told 404 Media’s Jason Koebler, who has been tracking right to repair legislation for 10 years. He details that at first, big tech and big engineering, such as Apple, John Deere, and others, ardently lobbied against these bills, saying that trade secrets protections would be violated if they were forced to turn over diagnostics, telemetry, or other insider data to non-company actors. The progressive difficulty with which modern products, particularly electronics, are designed prevents most amateurs from being able to repair them if they break.AOP - you here tonight? This story likely gains your approval!
On this day in 2008: Canadian guitarist, singer, Jeff Healey, died of cancer. Healey lost his sight to retinoblastoma, a rare cancer of the eyes when he was 8 months old, resulting in his eyes being surgically removed. On this day in 1999: Dusty Springfield died after a long battle against cancer, aged 59. The British singer had her first UK hit single in 1963 with this song... Tucker Carlson
@TuckerCarlson One of the most striking things about yesterday’s Zelensky press conference was Lindsey Graham’s reaction to it. The two are old friends, but Graham disavowed him within the hour. This was more than just transactional disloyalty. It was scapegoating. Lindsey Graham knows what’s coming. Over the past three years, with the tacit support of its western patrons, the Ukrainian government has committed a remarkable number of serious crimes. The Ukrainians sold huge quantities of American weapons on the international black market at twenty cents on the dollar. These weapons are now in the hands of armed groups around the world, including Hamas, the Mexican drug cartels and the forces now controlling Syria. God knows what the Ukrainians have done with the pathogens in American biolabs in their country. Even US intel agencies aren’t sure. The Ukrainians have also murdered a number of people in various countries in political assassinations, and tried to murder others, including American journalists and a European head of state. This is all true, and it’s all going to come out at some point. Better to start blaming it on Zelensky now. Posted by: Mister Ghost at March 02, 2025 10:18 PM (TGPs7) 77

FAFO... Posted by: Romeo13 at March 02, 2025 10:17 PM (QAkQ3) I never believed the claims that this was a deliberate ambush by Trump and Vance. To me, it came off from the first as, they thought the deal was nailed down when the press conference started, Zelensky pulled the rug out from under them in front of the press, and they got pissed. This all comes of Zelensky believing the Western world has a moral obligation to support his country against Russia, and therefore he can set whatever terms he wants. That's not how foreign policy works. Posted by: Dr. T at March 02, 2025 10:21 PM (lHPJf) 83

The "chain" that connects the exterior handle to the flap valve had come off the flap valve, and on closer inspection, the "chain" is actually just a ribbon of plastic that had been cast when the flap valve had been cast, the whole thing was a single unit, now broken. so I used a small stainless wood screw to attach the ribbon back on the flush valve, and it works. I have a replacement valve as well, so when my bodge-up to get it functional finally stops working I can re do the whole thing. Posted by: Kindltot at March 02, 2025 10:21 PM (D7oie) 85

Born a little too early to appreciate Karen Carpenter. Deep into the Dead and the like, what little I knew of the Carpenters had them locked into the teeny bopper pop music category, which was studiously ignored.
Too bad, she did have a lovely voice. Can't say I knew she was a drummer at all. Posted by: From about That Time at March 02, 2025 10:22 PM (n4GiU) 87

They treated my like pharaoh. Radio was important back in the day, 60's and 70's. Teens listened to their favorite station. A top 40 station would play anything that was in the top 40. Hard rock, pop, soul, even some country (if it was sort of pop). Now days the stations stick to certain genre. But we listened to a lot of radio. Times were different, we didn't have the gadgets we have today. Television was limited to just a few channels. Going to the movies was kinda a thing. So were phone booths. The US seems to be shoving Europe into the a well deserved wastebin.
People in charge now think actually mildly cooperating with the Russians is more beneficial to the US than fighting them. This cuts off all the fake Cold War BS rice bowels we were all fed. The US wants its sphere of influence and Russia wants theirs. Most of Europe has already been conquered by their own hubris by the Muzzies. The Germans shouldn't have laughed in Trumps face. China and Islam are the real enemies of the West. Posted by: pawn at March 03, 2025 02:13 AM (QB+5g) 496

The rape gang situation in Britain is proof. Starmer a decade ago was the head of Crown Prosection Services, only covering up the crimes not seeking any justice for the girls. I just feel Trump does not like nor give two fucks for kiddy rape enabler Starmer. Trump stands up for children instead of trying to sniff them. No clue on how hard it would be to get parts since they haven't been made in 50 years. I'm sure like anything else collectable there is a dude out there with garage full of them, restores them, probably sleeps with one, and had a shit ton of parts. There are motorcycle enthusiasts out there that just have to have anything rare. I never saw one in person, and can't even find one for sale, so what does that tell you? Zelensky been getting away with his pushy attitude:
'YOU CAN BE A BIT MORE GRATEFUL': Joe Biden lost his temper with Zelensky after sending $1 BILLION in aid. Now, Trump & Vance call out Zelensky’s arrogance in the Oval Office—America saw it firsthand. Maybe this isn’t about Trump—maybe it’s about Zelensky. https://tinyurl.com/bdu23eet Posted by: Braenyard - some Absent Friends are more equal than others _ at March 03, 2025 02:48 AM (IkhKe) 509
