Things took a turn when Zelenskyy attempted to embarrass Trump and "re-litigate" his demands for unlimited US funding "in front of the media." Then Trump and Vance began shutting him down. Video here. Must watch. It starts out like a normal meeting, but then Zelenskyy starts doing what he always does, making demands on people like he's Greta Fucking Thunberg. Trump ultimately tells Zelenskyy that the US is out of Ukraine, one way or the other, so Zelenskyy can either begin negotiating or get ready to "fight it out" against Russia on his own.

The State Department, at Trump's public order, started ramping up massive retaliation, including sanctions against Colombian officials, and Colombia folded...in 90 minutes.

I'm going to suggest that the EU thought it would be a good idea to create this imagery. They, likely, didn't expect the WWE tag team effort in response. The EU wants the US leading the peace keeping force for two reasons. They want plausible deniability on any roadblocks that occur. To Trump, dressing appropriately and being arguably the best dressed person there for the occasion is very important. In the 1980's when he was the toast of NYC, he and Ivana dressed in formal business attire for a Sunday afternoon interview at their house with some TV personality. No khakis and golf shirt. The interviewer was put a bit off balance. I saw him on the Golf Channel TV take to task/needle his sons for wearing dress shorts in the summer for a round of golf. "What's with the shorts, I don't get the whole thing with shorts?"
Friendly challenge for anyone to find a picture of him in casual attire for any sort of meeting other than a sporting event. It's respect for the occasion and for the other parties if their is one. Impeccable business attire all the time.

An important point. Trump makes it clear that he is a neutral party. This applies to NATO as well. He makes it clear that there has to be a middle ground here that neither Ukraine or Russia will get everything they want and that there needs to be a negotiation. That is why a ceasefire is the first step. Zelensky needed to be told in public that he can;t win regardless of how much more money is spent and he has to come to the table.

The overriding US policy from Kennan's long telegram that kicked off the cold war, to this fiasco has been to keep China and Russia at odds. (Not difficult since they hate each other, but also it required effort to keep that animosity and distrust in place.)

I think the real story is 90% of this is going on behind the scenes.
The CIA organized a coup against the "Russian puppet" leader of Ukraine. Then the US / Z govt orchestrated events in a way that led to the skirmishes in the boarder regions. Etc.

Most of what western media has shown is false. What fighting there is going on is where and when Russia decides they can take back territory without taking too many casualties.
Otherwise, drones fly, missiles fly, and they occasionally hit people.
I've been saying for a long time, this "war" has been over for some time, and Russia has just been waiting for a day like today, when the U.S. will stop trying to appease that idiot in costume.

That said, when Trump was pre-celebrating the mineral rights deal yesterday, saying it'd be signed today, after Zelensky had been playing hardball on it lately... I was worried he was making Zelensky lose face / look weak, and in fairness to him / Ukraine, Zelensky can't look weak to Putin and expect a place in negotiations. Looked like he was daring Zelensky to challenge him (Trump), and this is what happened. Still, Zelensky is small potatoes and needs to be mindful of his place. But maybe Trump coulda kept his powder dry until *after* they signed the agreement... Arm-chair quarterbacking here...

The Uke war isn't like WWII where you get grand movements of armies and armored spearheads. Technology has changed so if you can see an enemy target you can kill it with drones, missiles or artillery.
So it is mostly small scale infantry movements (because infantry is cheap) - except the occasional WWI style Ukrainian frontal assault - lil Z fired his defense minister last year for demanding they stop doing that.

That being said, rare earth minerals are actually not that rare but mining it is nasty business. China managed to shut down all the other rare earth mines by lowballing price to get a monopoly. We even have at least one in the West that could be reopened fairly easily.
And, a lot of that rare earth mineral demand is for electric and hybrids. Nix EVs and the demand drops (and hits China hard as they now make EVs and mine rare earth minerals for world wide sale).

Putin already has control over Europe because of natural gas, without Russian natural gas, the Europeans would freeze in the winter. He knows that, the European capitals know that, but they know their damn roles and just yap at Putin like a house full of chihuahuas when a bigger dog walks in front of the house.
Secondly, Putin knows his armed forces have been fucked for the last 30 years. He knew it when they were in Afghanistan, and knew that he couldn't keep up with the industrial base of the US, so he looked to areas closer, some of the former Soviet states.

I feel as if he said or agreed to one thing, behind closed doors, then manipulated the press to say and act like the weenie he is to the world. Garnering sympathy from people who hate Trump more than Putin.

The shelling here was before SMO for 8 years, on civilian areas before there were any Russian troops there. In the war they often shelled civilian areas, including the first HIMARS shot after they had been driven out of range with normal guns.

He is the de-facto leader according to Ukraine, and until they hold elections 1) Z can not legally negotiate with Putin. They made a law. 2) and by Ukrainian Law Z is not the legal president once his term expired last year.
His gallivanting around trying to sell U assets is extrememly questionable and futile, since there are not resources on planet earth to re-equip his army at any cost nor does he have the manpower to hold his lines . Russia is gulping down the country a few KM at a time, and his Kursk incursion has been cut off and thousands of men will die or surrender there soon.
My guess was with the plan Putin and Trump acting as trustee for the assets would start closing down the fighting considerably

EU is deindustrialized. They tried to increase production of ARTY ammo for a few years. They failed, and gave up. If they had managed it they estimated 2 years to catch up to where Russia is NOW. Russia is increasing production and is at full 24 hour workshifts.
We aren't a ton better ourselves.

Neither. I'm grateful for the USA when they do act as a good neighbour. I've agreed with everything Trump has done up to this point. I think he's the best hope for the West to come along in decades. But he's not infallible.
The USA includes California. The USA includes the Democrats. If you hate what they stand for, is that hating Americans? Does everyone who doesn't agree with illegal immigrant invaders have to sign up with ICE before you'll listen to them? When Zelensky demanded a formal security guarantee it defeated the whole purpose of the meeting and upset the applecart. He tried to back the US into a corner publicly to get a concession. Obviously Trump is not manipulable in that fashion.
There are also reports that Z was on the phone with Obama's group of flunkies like Susan Powell who urged him to stand strong before the meeting. If blowing up an agreed upon deal is not a Logan Act violation then I don't know what is. It will be interesting to see if this pans out.

In 2017 we were in Ireland, Scotland and the UK. Once in a pub in the Cotswalds for lunch, a very rude man and his mates were discussing, with disdain, Americans and President Trump. They heard our accents. We ignored them, or I did as the rest did not notice. As we left I looked the old goat in the eye and won the stare contest as I can shoot lasers. Should have kicked him on the way out for emphasis that I heard him.
Let them dig out of their own messes. If I go again it will be Poland or Hungary.

It hasn't ended in the USA either. The UK politically is where the USA was four years ago. A lot of the people there are fed up with the uniparty, but if you vote against the Conservatives (think never-Trump RINOs), you get Labour (think Kamala), who are even worse. Last year, the right got totally fed up with the Conservatives stabbing them in the back, piling in ever more immigrants after promising not to, so they voted Reform and split the vote so Labour got in in a landslide. Two Tier Keir is less popular than typhoid, but until the right get their act together, that's who is running the show. How do you feel about being blamed for Biden's foreign policy? How do you think the Afghan women, weaker even than the Ukrainians, would have acted if invited to the Whitehouse to meet the most powerful man in the world to sign the surrender? You can't judge an entire nation on the basis of some of the people, even their leaders.
