It’s code for they could never play lead, or they weren’t attractive enough to become movie stars. But in Gene Hackman’s case it means he could play anything. He could be tough and cruel. He could be evil. He could be funny. He could be tender and sweet. Never has an actor done so much with what one might describe ordinary looks. I never felt that way. I always had a crush on Gene Hackman. All it took was just one look in Woody Allen’s Another Woman and I’ve been in love with him much of my adult life. Why Gene Hackman, people have always asked me. I don’t know why. He has what the Talking Heads would call a face with a view. He contains multitudes.Gene Hackman passed away today. Weird circumstances too, I wonder if we'll ever find out what happened? Brilliant actor. Never saw him in a role where he wasn't stellar.

At around 0300, on Sunday, 22 December, the Aegis cruiser USS Gettysburg (CG 64) shot down an F/A-18F preparing to land on USS Harry S Truman (CVN 75) while operating in the Red Sea. The Carrier Strike Group to which each of these units was assigned was an element of the U.S.-led Operation Prosperity Guardian, assigned to protect Red Sea merchant traffic from Yemen-based Houthi attacks. First, we all need to understand that there is only one man who knows what happened on that day, and that is the commanding officer of Gettysburg. Apart from the F/A-18F crew, which possesses a very small but critical piece of the puzzle, everyone else is just an observer, a post-exercise armchair quarterback. Having said that, while Gettysburg’s captain knows what happened in terms of the detailed, incredibly complex sequence of events, unless the failure was the result of discrete, identifiable human error, he may not, in the immediate aftermath, understand why certain things did happen. For example, if systems or off-ship persons failed to operate as advertised, he wouldn’t know exactly why those systems or persons failed. That level of detail may only be revealed in the post-mortem.The author commanded 3 Aegis cruisers in his career, so I'm going to assume he knows what he's talking about.
Slowly, those pieces are being put together, and each day more is understood as to what happened. That is a good thing, because this was a combat-level laboratory, in which strengths and weaknesses were on real-world display. We tend to give the Federalists too much credit. Pretty much anyone could foresee that a branch of government whose confirmed appointees have life tenure subject only to impeachment would have members who would exercise will rather than judgment. It's a problem baked into this kind of arrangement. Of the three branches, the judiciary was the one least well thought out.

Didn't read all the correspondence at the end of the article, but read up to it. Sad, and infuriating.
Never did buy into any of it. Never took the jab. Avoided places that required masks (except one visit to a clinic where I wrapped my scarf around my face going in), and realized all along what a tremendous mistake all the reaction was.
There were deep personal costs to our choices, but I could never go along with the madness in any case.

My buddy ToddMan has been in a wheelchair for 40 years. (Broken neck due to an idiot driver.)
He just suffered a heart attack, but they revived him. However, multiple systems are starting to fail on his frail body.
I fear his ultimate demise is drawing closer.
Any prayers for healing or peace would be greatly appreciated.

One thing the Euro governments have been ignoring for a while is that when you seize power and flout any sort of democract pretensions in how you gained and maintain power you do actually open yourself up to being replaced in a coup.
How many Euros would rush out to the streets to defend Fred Merz or Emanuel Macron if someone positioned with a plan and armed men deposed them? Dad is doing better. He had some tests and scans today. He has double pneumonia and he has several small cysts on both kidneys and one huge cyst on one kidney that is pushing out his abdomen and causing bowel blockage.
They were going to do surgery to remove the large cyst, but have decided to try treating with medication for now. I am assuming that is because of the pneumonia and not wanting to put him under in his current condition.
My sister has taken Dad his laptop, so he should be able to post himself now, but he was asleep when she dropped it off. That's all that we know for now.

Number One offspring started his career as a federal employee on December 2nd.

Technically, we have not had circuit courts since the 1890's. What we have are judicial circuits in which there are courts of appeals and federal district courts. What Roberts did was to issue a hold on a TRO (temporary restraining order) so that he can pass the issue up to the other justices. Each of the justices is assigned a circuit to supervise (historical reasons) and Roberts has the DC circuit--Court of Appeals and federal district courts there. The judges have been issuing TROs because they are not appealable to the Courts of Appeal normally as they are designed as very short term. In this case, they are being abused because once the money leaves the Treasury, it technically becomes 'property' of the contractor, etc. That implicates due process to get the money back. These judges could have just as easily issued a preliminary injunction after a hearing but that would mean it is appealable.

Well I'm alive. Very tired. Admitted. To my own room as I am contagion.
During the weak leading up to Saturday I had the flu but Saturday it blossomed again, more virulent. It weakened me to the point where walking, shuffling really, was hard. Plus I as suffering from a chronic diarrhea with gas. Accidents! My bladder suddenly lost control - more accidents. Wed night I slipped, lost my balance and then couldn't get up.
So I have double pneumonia, a huge cyst plus lots of smaller ones in my kidneys causing the diarrhea and gas.

Well no ethanol is a good thing. Ethanol is satan. I had a bike come in that sat for 4 years with the gas in it. The fuel pump was seized, the plastic fuel lines inside the tank were all cracked, the fuel pump filter/sock literally crumbled when I touched it, and the injectors were frozen shut. It was a mess. Didn't take long to fix it, maybe 4-5 hours, but the parts, holy shit the parts....

Thanks for that idea, Adriane. Yes, hubby had had some *bad nights* before his worst episodes. The care home has reviewed his meds/schedule and made adjustment. Hubs is better now but his disease is progressing and will, eventually, kill him.

The things I get fascinated with. Of late, I've been watching the rotation of the Erf. It's been trending a bit slow of late, but for the past so so many years, it's been faster more than slow. We haven't needed a leap second since Dec 31, 2016, and we're on the 9th year without one.
And now, I just read the way things are going, they are predicting a negative leap second needed in 2029. This will likely break the entire internet. Computer systems will likely crash. Not kidding.
I'm sort of hoping it happens, just to see what happens if a negative leap second has to be done.
