Top Story

Framework has announced three new models: The low-end education-focused Laptop 12, a new Laptop 13 with AMD's Ryzen 300 series chips, and the all-new Desktop. (Tom's Hardware)

The new Framework 13 keeps the upgradeable memory, with up to 96GB to accompany an up to Ryzen 370 twelve-core CPU. Still no Four Essential Keys though.

The Framework Desktop is a mini-ITX system in a compact 4"x8"x9" case.

Using AMD's latest Strix Halo CPUs, up to the Ryzen 395, with its 16 CPU cores and 40 graphics cores.

Memory this time is soldered, though you can specify up to 128GB of it, and it's only a 100% markup over retail. The company said that it worked "for months" with AMD but couldn't make the memory user-upgradeable while maintaining the 8000MHz target frequency. (The new Laptop 13 uses 5600MHz memory.)

There are two M.2 slots for storage, so you're free to upgrade that at least.

Plus two USB 4 ports, two DisplayPort ports, HDMI, 5Gb Ethernet, two regular USB ports, a headphone jack, and two of Framework's flexible expansion ports at the front, though the video is already prewired to the rear of the case so you can't put the DisplayPort or HDMI options there.

Price for the 128GB model is $1999, which is not exactly cheap, but a Mac Studio configured with 128GB of RAM will set you back $4799, which is even less exactly cheap.

Laptop 13 ships in April; Desktop ships in Q3.

The convo with the retirement counselor went well; I talk in about ten days with the fellow who can actually start the paperwork. As for the Gorgle Meet with the publisher, I couldn't get into the session and ended up just calling her by phone. It went well. She's enthusiastic about the book. And she seemed almost as if she were selling me on their handling my book; it was not a "Tell me why we should publish you" kind of thing. She's got to confer with her business partner, but sounds sanguine that she will love the story too.

13 OE, I didn't realize you were here! As I said above, she's enthusiastic and full of praise for the book, and she was on the same wavelength as I am about it kicking off a series. Points for me, that I told her I'd be fine on going to meet and talk with groups and helping to publicize the property. No advance, but she explained why, that they give their authors higher royalties than some in the business. The author, she says, is involved in each step of producing the book, too.

She hopes, if her partner agrees, to send me a draft contract in the next couple of weeks.

24 At work today, I have to continue doing battle with the dragon called The Budget. And I found last night that leaving early does not guarantee a swift short ride home -- not with Mawdi Graw seizing the city in its jaws. Took me an hour yesterday, and that was with my forcing my car into lines and using the HOV lane to come home (Linda was with me, so that was not illegal). There's a high school just up the street, too. From three to four p.m., there's a flood of cars and a crossing guard holding up traffic as well. So there is no point in my leaving before four.

This is the last time I'll have to deal with the MG crap, so there's that.

She tells me they invest some $20K in developing each property and getting it to market. No money ever is asked of the writer -- their website says so too. If it hadn't, I wouldn't have submitted to them. So they do things like a trad publisher.

If everything works out, the draft contract will tell me the fine details, I guess.

Yeah, tradpubs aren't just the Big Five. A lot of smaller publishers work the same way: no cost to the author, things like that. I think taking the marketing and sales into your own hands is probably the thing you need to do with a smaller pub. Although, I've heard of major houses doing very little for their writers except printing the book.

MP4, I submitted to them because of a link OrangeEnt or one of the Literary Horde posted to a site that lists contests and markets for books and short stories. I'll look it up and email you. In May I sent them two sample chapters and a query letter; they responded with a request for the whole manuscript. That was in October. Suddenly, early this month, I hear from Ms. Curtis there, the publisher and co-founder, that she is reading and loving it and thinks "a conversation is warranted." And here we are.

63 61 58 I took a chance on this revenue office, our newest one, due to parking. It's kinda like Yogi Berra said, nobody goes there, it's too crowded. Walked in, it's busy, but they have 10 windows, two of which are for photos. An amazing concept, all the windows were manned, so it was step right up. I could never understand that issuance of a temp license and mailing the real deal, but in PA's case it probably keeps a few people in Harrisburg working.

It was fun when I was a kid; the parades went by half a block away, and I didn't have to fight traffic, fight for a parking place, and then battle traffic to come back.

( I had my Bible with me.) Our text was "Jesus stilling the storm" which is found in the Gospel of Mark. They have such interesting comments to make. I am glad the activities director said I could do this after the old guy in his 90's ( God bless him!) had to stop because he had to give up driving.

Sadly, older women in Europe seem to be on the "demographic replacement" train. It's the chirrens who're voting to stop the madness. Further, from a purely utilitarian perspective, women outside the child-bearing years, absent some special skill, are unlikely to be a benefit to our country. History demonstrates that women are more likely to demand "social support" more than men. It's a bigger risk to grant entry to women, even if they profess conservative viewpoints.

If we were considering permitting mass refugees from Europe then we need to do so with an eye toward how to help the US be better, not how to accelerate our descent into another failed super-state.
