Posted by: Wolfus Aurelius, Dreaming of Elsewhere at February 25, 2025 04:01 AM (omVj0)

2 Well, whaddaya know! Did it without even trying!

Evening and morning, late toilers and early risers. How is your Tuesday so far? At noon I have a phone appt. with my retirement advisor, and then this evening at home, a Gorgle Meet with a publisher who is interested in a novel of mine. 'S gonna be a rough day -- or at the least, an interesting one.

4 From the ONT: The story about Trump sending a helicopter to keep Kathie Lee Gifford and her child safe from a stalker back in '93 was fascinating. And I think Rupert Holmes's "Him" is the song he should be remembered for. I like "Escape," but "Him" has everything that makes for a dramatic pop song.

6 Good luck Wolfus! Hope it all goes well.

I should be in bed because I also have a full day tomorrow - leading two separate meetings; one for those suffering from a loss of a spouse and another on the mission, purpose and vision of the parish. We have a new bishop so, changes are afoot.

7 BOING!

Was 32F/0C this morning. Back from big supermarket shop with Mrs. BD. Had to scrape the frost off the car windshield. Haven't done that in years.

Beautiful blue skies, a crisp 43F/6C outside with almost no wind. Wearing a sweater for a change.

20+ minutes ago, central Israel and even northern areas heard multiple loud explosions.

About 10 minutes ago, the window panes I'm sitting next to rattled for about 10 seconds straight.

I'll bring a book to pass the time with. I'm reading the third book of CS Lewis Space trilogy; 'That Hideous Strength'.

17 Hello. Sunday Night and Monday Night I listened some to an audiobook version of The Big Sleep. I'm up to the start of Disc 3 out of 5, and want to take a small break.

("...but who killed the chauffeur?" "Shut up.")

I also watched the first twenty minutes or so of Amazon Prime's Philip Marlowe thing, the one based on the novel "The Black Eyed Blonde," which wasn't by Chandler, and it's slightly jarring. I think the present-day Neesom may be too old to be a good Marlowe, although the role has been rewritten to make him older. I'm not sure it works, it's a dissonant note to me.

Posted by: Thing From Snowy Mountain at February 25, 2025 04:49 AM (gHSfI)

18 I haven't slept through a solid period, even if a short bathroom break in over a month.

Posted by: Skip at February 25, 2025 05:00 AM (fwDg9)

19 OK, the thing that bugs me about the chauffeur: I think the reader is supposed to read-between-the-lines and figure out that the older daughter, Vivian, did it as part of her ongoing coverup of the crimes connected with her sister's problems.

While you can do a superficial reading and conclude that Vivian is the better sister, the real truth is, she's just the more functional sociopath of the two.

But we can't talk about that in the movie, thanks to the Hayes Code, so.... "Gee, I dunno."

Posted by: Thing From Snowy Mountain at February 25, 2025 05:04 AM (gHSfI)

20 Can't say I like today's song. Lyrics are a tip-off to the transgender thing that's been pushed hard on today's kids. Doing some searching about the song confirms it.

24 Well I was pretty much against all this loose talk about annexing that frozen Communist waste.

But my 5 year old daughter came to crying and said "Daddy... Canada is an impudent second-tier client state and it's high damned time it was brought to heel. More to the point, it's unbefitting a world historical leader of Trump's stature to accept truculent insubordination from a worm like Freeland. Why won't Trump execute War Plan Red? Why, daddy? Why?!?!?"

When I saw her tears, all I could say I was "I don't know, princess. I wish you could ask him yourself." Then I cried, too.

50 "I've never understood forcing shift work on crews, just seems like a recipe for sleep deprivation and mistakes/accidents as a result."

You'd be surprised what people decide what's best. I was the OIC for the 2nd Brigade, 1st Armored Division, Emergency Operations Center back around Able Archer days. We had 4 NCOs to be the NCOIC of that entity, which ran 24 hours operations. I told them that I didn't care how they decided to split the work, other than if I walked in the room at any time during any day that there had better be one them present and awake.

Between the 4 of them, they decided that one of the 4 would have night duty for every night for a month. The other 3 would have one day on, 2 days off, for that month. They would then rotate the night duty slot to the next NCO. Rinse and repeat.

Worked for them. Worked for me, too. (OIC of that place was an additional duty, so I was always on the hook.)

MP4,

This has come a little late in life for me too. Fifty years ago, forty, even twenty, I'd have been over the moon. Now, I guess I'm merely too focused on "How is this going to work out for me? And knowing I have the Amazon-publish option, even if it means I have to do my own marketing, well, that's kind of freeing -- like having a backup job offer if the current interview doesn't work out.

As far as your situation: I'm reminded of advice they used to give runners and exercise people back in the '70s and '80s. "Stick with it. Go through the motions. Your enthusiasm will return." I'm finding my workouts to be boring, as I've traversed the exact same paths for decades. Once I have more time, and relocate too, who knows? A new venue and new experiences may jump-start my enthusiasm. It may work for you too. Take a trip!

"The United States and Canada are a natural unit - our technology and capital and population, their space and natural resources," Mallory said. "Canada has no authenticity as a political entity. It can’t support itself or even defend itself. The British designed it as a colony to be exploited. When the British Empire expired, naturally an enormous power like the United States absorbed Canada economically and culturally, and dominated its consciousness. Why not join the Canadians to us politically as well? It would have been good for Canada and good for the United States. We have that headache over energy and minerals, you know, and there are an awful lot of those things under the tundra."

I thought the new hotness was billionaires only since we have so many people in government that are millionaires and they don't want to draw attention to themselves.

What's worse, a billionaire who owns a company you don't have to use or 1000 bureaucrats who became millionaires on tax dollars extracted from you at gun point?

152 I enjoyed the clip on X where Trump explains the purpose of the “5 things” email; which is exactly what I’ve been trying to say here whenever it comes up. It has *nothin” to do with the actual answer given (unless its an intentionally vulgar one, I suppose) but rather, it is a ping sent out to see which employees actually exist, and which are just fraudulent names and accounts soaking up a check each month.
So of course it doesn’t matter if Kash exempts his department, because he’s capable of determining for himself if his people exist or not. This query is meant to ferret out thousands of names that exist only in the shadows, but which still collect a check each month.
