Sefton: sefton at cutjibnewsletter.com | Gun Thread: Pre-March Edition!![]() FUNdamentals Well let's kick things off wih this Colt Model 1911 from our pal and content submitter extraordinaire, EdL. ![]() At first glance, this Colt M1911 looks no different than any other old, worn M1911. Only a close look at its serial number and right-side slide markings reveals that it's a milestone firearm. Serial Number 561 was part of the first shipment of five hundred M1911 pistols delivered to the US Navy on March 9, 1912 (one month before RMS Titanic began her ill-fated maiden voyage) at the Brooklyn Navy Yard, NY. It is the 561st M1911 delivered by Colt and the 61st delivered to the US Navy. ![]() ![]() The M1911 pistols delivered in the early months of 1912 had several distinct features. The monogramed "WGP" above the magazine catch are the initials of Major Walter G. Penfield, the US Army Ordinance inspector at Colt. His initials signified US Army acceptance of the pistol. The left rear of the slide has the Colt rampant pony within a circle (and a slightly goofy facial expression upon magnification). M1911 pistols delivered in 1912 have rounded rear sights. This reduced wear and tear on the M1912 holsters carrying the M1911. Complaints about using this sight in service changed it to the more familiar rectangular rear sight used to the end of M1911A1 production. The "H" stamped just below the rear sight is the acceptance mark of Frank Hosmer, Major Penfield's civilian deputy. His "H" was placed on all major parts of the pistol (slide, barrel, frame) prior to final assembly. ![]() ![]() ![]() The magazine catch release has a concave (aka "dimpled") shape. In service, removing the magazine catch release proved difficult. A slip by the soldier attempting to remove the magazine catch would result in the spring holding the catch in place shooting off into the unknown. The Army ordered Colt to change the mechanism to use a convex screw so that a screwdriver could be used to remove the magazine catch. This is the only moving part in John Browning's 1911 design that required changing after entering service. As delivered, this M1911 would have had Colt's commercial "fire blue" finish, with the small parts sporting a bright blue color contrasting with the darker finish of the rest of the pistol. This example has had virtually all of the finish worn off with use. Only a remnant of the bright blue finish is still visible on the trigger and underside of the hammer. ![]() The magazine is one of the few surviving original magazines, identifiable by the exposed edges of the base plate. Magazine problems dogged the M1911 during its first year of service. The feed lips would bend with use. Cracks would form in the corners where metal was bent to shape the magazine. Colt had problems obtaining and working with an acceptable sheet steel with a low enough carbon content to prevent cracking. These problems would not be solved until well into 1913. It appears that the USN continued to use these early M1911s until their complete replacement by Beretta M9s. Serial number 538 now resides in the US Navy Museum's collection. The US Navy Museum received it from a decommissioning ship in 1991 after 79 continuous years of USN service. ![]() M1 Carbine! ![]() From Outdoor Life comes this article on the M1 Carbine. 22LR Ballistics Takeoff's in a Stearman Q: Weasel, do you have a Stearman video? Cigar of the Week ![]() CAO Pilon So on New Year's Eve afternoon, I finished the last cigar of my 2024 surprise package of assorted sticks. Fortunately I was good boy last year, so much so that Santa brought me another pack for 2025. Now that I think about it, Santa and Mrs. D look a lot alike. Except for the beard. Well, the length anyway. Anyway, I concluded the year with the CAO Pilon, of the signature series by Rick Rodriguez. Now I don't enjoy a cigar that when I first put it into my mouth to moisten the end, th first thing I am hit with is that burning, peppery taste. It's not a big thing mind you, but an annoyance that I endure. And I'm glad I did. This was the 5 x 52 stick that after the first 5 minutes, turned into pure smoking pleasure. I forgot about how chilly it was (smoking outside) and how cloudy it was (the Pacific NW after all) and I found myself enjoying a real fine cigar. This pilon boasted a smooth draw, even burn, and a real pleasant flavor. I saw nice smoke development and almost no after-taste. I paired it with a generous dollop of Buffalo Trace bourbon and was sorry to see both the end of the cigar and the bottom of the glass. I fully recommend this cigar to smokers. Again, if you are a beginner, work through the pepper flavor at the start. You will be glad you did.Excellent, Diogenes! Thank you very much!! The brick & mortar/online divide exists with cigars, as with guns, and most consumer products, with respect to price. As with guns - since both are "persecuted industries", basically - I make a conscious effort to source at least some of my cigars from my local store(s). It's a small thing, but the brick & mortar segment for both guns and tobacco are precious, and worth supporting where you can. And if you're lucky enough to have a good cigar store/lounge available, they're often a good social event with many dangerous people of the sort who own scary gunz, or read smart military blogs like this one. -rhomboid Anyone have others to include? Perhaps a small local roller who makes a cigar you like? Send me your recommendation and a link to the site! I'm really very seriously not kidding around anymore. So, with Kash Patel appointed the temporary Director of ATF along with his FBI gig, does that mean that we can finally look forward to Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives becoming merely the trademarked name of a new nationwide string of convenience stores? Add live bait, a deli counter, propane cylinder exchange, and a fuel plaza with 35 pumps, and they'll drive Bucee's out of business inside of a year!

Damn Ed L, you always have a nice firearm and a history or story to go with it. Nice!!
Anyways, I did make it to a gun range last weekend. The Lone Star Handgun range in San Antonio. I took my two Sigs with me and my buddy brought down four of his pistols to play with. Had a great time down there but the steel was not ringing as much as it should have been. Let me say, I need to get back and practice the FUNDAMENTALS. Weasel, I had my taxes done this past Friday. It was painful but expected with what I did last year.
Let's just say I will be holding back buying anything new (except ammo) and will be happy with what I have. As far as the TXMoMe in October goes, I have booked a hotel room for Thursday - Sunday but I am not booking airfare yet. I can cancel the hotel with no penalty, not so with airfare. Plan is to work a half day Thursday and get to Dallas in the evening. Attend the MoMe on Friday and Saturday and fly home Sunday. Work should be able to handle my supervisor and myself being out 1 day. Weasel, do you have a Stearman video?
I got to fly in a Stearman in Hawaii! I was going to ride in a Pitts Special, but it was down for annual maintenance when I arrived. So, while my wife and not-quite-6yo son got a sailplane ride, I got to ride in an open cockpit barnstormer. Since I had been medically grounded in the AF some years earlier, that was a real thrill. The only disappointment was I couldn't fly it for a bit, because there were no controls at my seat. But I still had bugs in my teeth from the flight. Range report: I headed out Friday to do some load development testing. I'm still amused I zero @ 100 yards and test @ 200 yards.
Anyway, loads tested well, though there were a couple of amusing side notes. I had two loads that didn't go where they were supposed to. One dropped low and the other was to the right of where it should have been. Both times, I checked the chronograph and the chronograph confirmed I must not have been as diligent as I should have been when I loaded the ammo. Anyway, ammo I tested confirmed I was on the right path so I put together some loads for the silhouette match on Saturday, Did okay, 15 for 20. It's nice to finally be competitive when shooting these matches. Posted by: blake - semi lurker in marginal standing (tT6L1) at February 23, 2025 07:27 PM (tT6L1) 47

Top 100-ish?
Finally some range time at an annual camping trip. Sighted in a Browning High-wall in 45-70 tang rear and globe front sights. Fun but punishing… I was using loads rather more stout than original 45-70 BP - the rifle can handle them but I think my shoulder would appreciate something a bit milder Chronographed my handloads for cowboy shooting and found they were a lot milder than I expected. Will have to step them up a bit as they probably wouldn’t meet power requirements. Dinner Saturday was a game stew with venison. Posted by: Coelacanth at February 23, 2025 07:33 PM (crcb1) 58

Since I had been medically grounded in the AF some years earlier, that was a real thrill. The only disappointment was I couldn't fly it for a bit, because there were no controls at my seat. But I still had bugs in my teeth from the flight.

I know it's not the most "tactical" - but I always tell them shotgun, then revolver. Just for ease of operation which is then safety by definition. Posted by: Short Answer at February 23, 2025 07:46 PM (kM5e4) 82

Well, I FINALLY found a load for the 178 g Hornady BTHP .308. And it was the tiniest node I’ve ever found. On either side the group was 2, 2.5, 3”.
This one came in at .93 - 1 MOA or less is all I’m asking for! So, how did I find it? That’s right, I went back to loading Fundamentals. . . The game changer was weighing each bullet. They ranged from 177.3 to 178.5. I used the 177.7s. So, the variables were as minimized as possible. The only thing left was the sweet spot in the powder charge. And I found it, dammit! Mrs. Splunge and I had a good day at the range yesterday. After shooting a really nice group with her little Glock 43 at 10 yards, she moved back to 15 yards for the first time ever, and did very respectably. It was a very fun outing. The range was hopping. A 4H group was firing off arrows; people in colorful Western costume, probably in town for the End of Trail event that starts tomorrow were doing...something, and there was some event for hunters that had attracted about 50 trucks worth of people.

Went to the range today with a smaller contingent of the DMV MGC - Hrothgar still on the disabled reserve list. He seems to be recovering well though.
Ed L. brought an M11A1 which is a military version of the Sig P229. I had never actually seen a P229 - I have a couple of P226s and my understanding of the 229 is that it is a 226 shortened by a half inch in height and length to make a "carry" gun. That makes it seem like it just isn't that different. But it is! It is about G19 size. But heavier! Otherwise the controls are the same. Posted by: Splunge at February 23, 2025 07:49 PM (afZ9r) The original finish on that 1911 would have been the same as that on the two Colt New Service revolvers seen here a few months back. The small parts like the screws, trigger, and pins would have had a bright peacock blue color, with the rest of the pistol having a "black chrome" appearance. With the original finish, this 1911 would likely command six figures at an auction today. But sea spray and humidity probably took a toll on the original finish. Range Report
Range was packed and took close to an hour to get our two lanes adjacent. I decided to shoot my G44 in 22lr today and decided I have been spoiled by the slimmer grip on my G48. I shot ikay but it just wasn;t as much fun. Had some issues with the new G48MOS which seemed to be resolved with 124 gr ammo. So, need more ammo. he highlight was shooting Ed's M11A1. What a fabulous trigger and the weight made it easy to keep steady. Although he said the sight was off a bit, I liked the clear white dot which is like my Glocks so had no trouble hitting the target. All in all a very satisfying day. Posted by: sharon(willow's apprentice) at February 23, 2025 08:02 PM (t/2Uw) 109
I scored a M1911 from CMP a couple years ago for $850. Based on it's serial number, it has no substantial provenance, never leaving the USA. But it is a piece of history.
Regarding revolvers, I was always a pistol fan. But I bought a Ruger Security Six off a friend and became an instant fan Posted by: Our Country is Screwed at February 23, 2025 08:03 PM (2AW7/) 110
The M11A1 prints low on a bullseye target. Not sure why. It appears to have the same sight Blaster had on his SIG P320 Legion, which might be a bit high for a compact sized pistol. I'll need to do more checking, though. The M11A1 is capable of shooting tight groups if the shooter can do their part. The short reset trigger is really nice in single action and comes standard on the M11A1.

Shooting Ed L.'s M11A1 though we had a problem - it shoots low. It has Sig XRAY3 sights on it, and I brought a Sig 320 to shoot today with Sig XRAY3 sights and we compared them.
The rear sights were the same height but the front sight was lower. I am familiar with these sights coming as #8 and #6 sights (I think #10 is suppressor height). Some pistols get #6 front and rear and some #8 in the rear and #6 up front. I THINK this is what this P229 has - and I also think that the correct fix is to replace the #8 rear with a #6. Range duty day was surprisingly busy. Not on the access road or beyond in BLM land, as the border crossing has stopped, as you might have heard (and had shifted east a few months back due to cartel decisions, according to a BP officer's speculation). But lots of shooters for our day.
No exotic or interesting firearms really. One interesting shooter, the last one, a Navy guy who turns out is from Burkina Faso (the former Upper Volta), who became a member. He was stunned that I had heard of his homeland, and amused with my limited pidgin French. Nice guy. Also was good to see two younger shooters (20/30 somethings) both with revolvers (Rugers, LP100 and a Redhawk/44) blasting away. Didn't touch a trigger all day. Barely slept the night before, so shooting was out, plus we lost one of our crew recently and another had to leave early, so short-handed. One should exercise caution when buying M1 carbines that have been extensively refinished and blued. One name comes to mind, and there are more. Alpine Arms. In addition to surplus sales, a lot of "condemned by inspector" carbines were demilled by chopping the receiver in half. A few companies bought these up, played mix and match with the front and rear of the receiver, and welded them together. Some did a good job, others not so good.

I still have some of his flight gear, and great photos. The tie? The initial training for these guys was in Stearman PT-17's Second, how can any history re the M1 Carbine not refer to 'Carbine Williams'. A NC boy, btw. Stearmans were a staple at the air shows I attended with my dad back in my yute. IIRC also was the tow-plane at the Torrey Pines glider port (which was located just across the fence from the South Course where they play the golf tournament). Real workhorses. Also unless I'm wrong think they still use them to tow advertising banners, still, around here.

Posted by: rhomboid at February 23, 2025 08:25 PM (1m82a) According to the books I've read about 1911 development, the specs for the 1911 competition didn't require the magazine catch to be removed. Therefore, JMB didn't make it easy to remove. But after adoption, the Army wanted to make the catch more removable. Therefore, the Army ordered the change be made. That's a hit on the Army, not JMB. Mike Hammer love that you have your dad's WWII stuff. Notebooks must be interesting. Where did he do the training? In CONUS?
WashingtonNearsider sent me a gracious and info-packed email a while back about researching WWII vets. Am hoping to find out a lot more about my sister's late FIL, who flew B-26s in the ETO. Have his (contrary to rules) notebook with telegraphic notes on each mission. Hope to find much more in terms of unit activity, location, etc. I was even able to find on the interwebs what was almost certainly one of his targets, a stone bridge in a French town, which is still there. Friedrich Merz, the new chancellor of Germany (CDU) announced in his victory speech that Germany will lead the way in becoming independent of the US.
"This could mean coordinating nuclear weapons programs with the United Kingdom and France, he said, and potentially even the disbanding of the North Atlantic Treaty Alliance (NATO). On some of my 1 lb. tanks, after I screw in the bottle, I have to use my left hand to keep the air release valve open (the wire ring). It often won't stay open on its own. Did some Dot Torture drills with my "church gun". It went ok. My church gun is a PSA Micro Dagger. Small, holds 15 rounds, has a red dot (the dot is too big) and is sufficiently accurate. Being small and light, you need to grip it a bit firmer than the PSA Dagger that's my usual EDC. But it will perform if you will. Also did some double tap drills with said PSA Dagger. Went fine. And now they're going to get an even worse govt than the Traffic Light. Posted by: publius, Rascally Mr. Miley (w6EFb) at February 23, 2025 09:34 PM (w6EFb) 237

Until today I didn't realize that Germans were still terrified of themselves, 80 years after Hitler killed Hitler.
I guess when you destroy Europe and kill 50 million people while doing it, the fear that such behavior might be hereditary is almost pathological. So the "Middle" will join with the Commies and the Greens, just to keep Hitler at bay for another generation. Good news, I guess, as long as they start paying for their own national defense. And start building really cool tanks, again. Posted by: Sharkman at February 23, 2025 09:45 PM (/RHNq) 254

I do especially recall how light it was, but shot with the stability of a much heavier pistol. I enjoyed shootng the Prodigy as well but it felt heavier.

Posted by: RI Red at February 23, 2025 09:45 PM (PhL0q) Heavy and long trigger pull. Loose barrel lock-up. The Gray Guns mods made the trigger an excellent and short reset, and the barrel lock-up was a thing of beauty. It went from a 3" group at 10 yards to a 1.5" group. Next time we shoot together I will bring it. Posted by: CharlieBrown'sDildo at February 23, 2025 09:48 PM (mWSu4) 261
And also, a unitary, independent executive, like we have. Parliamentary systems suck, all in all. Conceivably, Germany could go with a minority govt., a plurality govt, but the president has to approve that. If I'm understanding that mess of a system correctly. I got interested in this, reading Eugyppius. If they fail to put together a minority coalition (there are two phases of tries here), then the president can approve a plurality vote, whoever gets the greatest number of votes from the mess of parties can put together a govt if the president approves it. If he doesn't, then the president would call a new election. IOW, you fucked up, now do it over and try to elect a working parliament. Any wisdom re using spray-on dry moly lube on the springs and followers of the mags to reduce friction? Stuff goes on wet like paint, dries to a slippery solid film. I have had good luck with in other applications. Posted by: Alberta Oil Peon at February 23, 2025 09:56 PM (8zz6B) 275

We had a wonderful foreign exchange student at our school from Germany. When we found out that the game Risk was on a computer we were all so happy, and he said "Yes I vill take over ze world!"
Having grown up with Mel Brooks movies, I was in awe of how the opportunity to say something clever had been handed to me on a silver platter. And after that moment of freezing, not jumping at that easy layup, he kind of screwed his face up in horror and said "No not really." I tried to think of any time where someone was so burdened by blameless guilt, and only answer I could think of was someone who was beaten without mercy by their parents. Blameless guilt is a disgusting thing, and the younger generations see it as someone defeated, senseless and not any kind of moral stand. In the US we have raaaaacism that is the same.
