  • If you think you've got problems with your RTX 5090 that is broken, on fire, and doesn't even exist crypto exchange Bybit lost $1.46 billion. (CoinDesk)

Not in the sense that they failed to make a profit for the quarter, but in the old-fashioned sense that somebody walked in and took it when they weren't paying attention.

  • Do you want a pocket computer with a keyboard, a touchscreen, and great battery life? Abe did, so he built one. (Tom's Hardware)

It uses a Pimoroni PicoVsion. I don't remember if I knew about that, but it's a great idea that was obvious the moment people figured out how to get HDMI video out of a Raspberry Pi Pico.

You can do it, but it uses up most of the memory bandwidth of the Pico. But the RP2040 chip on the Pico is tiny and cheap, so why not just use two of them?

The PicoVision does, and this little pocket computer uses that.

  • Leaked benchmarks put the upcoming Radeon 9070 at the same speed as the 7800 XT, with the 9070 XT around 25% faster. (Tom's Hardware)

That's not good for AMD; the XT model needs to be more like 50% faster. But it does coincide with other leaks from last month and may well be accurate.

So grabbing a 7800 XT when I did continues to look like a good move. If the price leaks are also accurate, and the conversion rate for the AMD cards is the same as Nvidia's, the 9070 will cost 80% more in Australia than the 7800 XT for almost exactly the same performance.

And the 7800 XT is disappearing from shelves.

That was the calculation I made when I noped out of waiting for the new cards.

  • Apple's iCloud Data Protection - its end-to-end encryption protocol - is no longer available to new customers in the UK. (BBC)

It will soon no longer be available to existing customers, which may require downloading all of your data and then uploading it again.

This is to comply with UK law, which was written by the Stasi, in order that the cops can spy on whomever they please.

  • Microsoft's Majorana 1 is an eight bit computer. (Hot Hardware)

Well, sort of. It's a new form of quantum computer built around topological qubits, which are much more resistant to error than regular (presumably nontopological) qubits.

    Don't ask me why.

And it currently has eight of them.

And it can - get this - work for as long as a millisecond before it breaks.

    This is apparently good.

Musical Interlude

Song is Getting Along by Swedish band Royal Republic. Video is from Miss Kobayashi's Dragon Maid, the story of a maiden who pulls a sword from a dragon, and... Hijinks ensue. Also lowjinks. Also everywhere-we-go-jinks.

I looked for an original video for this song, but there isn't one. There are live performances, but I like the studio version, and this was the video that first introduced me to Royal Republic anyway.

Disclaimer: Despite appearances, it does actually make sense. Sometimes.

4 Hi Pixy

Here's a tech related question for you.

Say for instance there was a guy who didn't want to be found, a fugitive, but had a need for some degree of internet human interactions so that he commented on chat sites or operated a blog under a pseudonym. And say he had previously written a manifesto or posted on a blog or had written a book. Would it be possible to use a language model AI to "read" his known postings and build a linguistic profile (language, grammar, misspellings, usage, slang, regional idioms, etc. that could then be used to crawl the internet looking for matching writing styles and potentially locate him?

In theory you could do a probability match, yeah. And then point it at likely places looking for new activity. If you tried to crawl the whole internet though you'd get buried under false positives.

This business of identifying an author by writing style has a name: stylometry.

It's a whole field of research unto itself. Then there is anti-stylometry, trying to obfuscate your writing to foil stylometric analysis.

47 According to local sources, at around 4 a.m. last Thursday (13 February) militants from the Allied Democratic Forces (ADF) – a group with direct ties to the ISIS (Islamic State) terror group – seized 20 Christian men and women from their homes in Mayba in northeast DRC. Later, the militants surrounded the village and captured 50 more believers. All 70 were held hostage for a short period and then taken to a Protestant church in nearby Kasanga and slaughtered, reportedly with machetes.

You wouldn’t know any of this by checking in with the mainstream media, partly because they don’t care about the massacre of Christians anywhere in the world, partly because they can’t figure out how to blame Israel and the Jews for the beheadings of African Christians, and partly because they’re too busy ginning up outrage over Trump firing IRS employees and dismantling the DEI grift.

Feb. 22, 1732 is George Washington's proleptic Gregorian birthdate. When was actually born, the date was Feb. 11, 1731. That was the Julian calendar.

The Brits changed to the Gregorian in Sept of 1752. It is claimed there were riots in protest, the Calendar Riots. This didn't really happen, but many people didn't like it. They thought parliament had stolen 11 days from them.

Anyway, it was a matter of individual choice whether to continue to use your old birthday or proleptically (means retroactively in this case) change your birthdate.

Several of the Founders were affected by this.

It's funny. When the Brits changed to the Gregorian calendar, they didn't use the term Gregorian, because that was Catholic. No, no, no, don't use that. They called it the New Style calendar.

Besides adding the 11 days to sync up, they changed the start of the new year to Jan 1st, which had become common practice. Previously March 25 was the date of the new year.

This is why Washington's proleptic birthdate changed to 1732 from 1731.

56 In theory you could do a probability match, yeah. And then point it at likely places looking for new activity. If you tried to crawl the whole internet though you'd get buried under false positives.

So you would use AI, and common sense to whittle down that search list (eg. non-English, academic, tutorial, commercial, anything heavily edited by 3rd party, sacred, handy-man oriented, international) but concentrate on things already expressed as in GAINZ, film, etc.

For example, we haven't had GAINZ in a while, so its an interest that wains, which indicates patterns or following subsections of popular sentiment which has its own discernable signature.

Our geniuses in academia refer not to "proleptic" dates but, where the date clarification is necessary will list the birth date and the note "Old Style" or "New Style"

Apparently abbreviations for Julian or Gregorian wouldn't make things clear or would be some violation of DEI, in the same manner academics can't name AD or BC .

72
Old Style vs New Style is a Britishism. They didn't want to use the term Gregorian, because it was Catholic. There was opposition to using a "papist calendar". :-)

Anyway, there's an ambiguous period between the time the Gregorian was first implemented in 1582, and when it's usage became universal. Britain was one of the last to convert, all some may have been later.

One way to do it would be just proleptically extend the Gregorian back in time all the way. Or you could wait until everyone had adopted it. Or you could use 1582.

The latter is what was chosen. So the period between 1582 and 1752 for British history is the period of ambiguous dates.

78 This is why Washington's proleptic birthdate changed to 1732 from 1731.

From what I understand, while Julius Caesar began the New Year on what we consider January 1, Christian cultures (after Rome's fall) adopted the Feast of the Annunciation as the date that coincided with observing the New Year.

It was Pope Gregory that stripped away the religious aspects of the calendar and secularized it.

104 Something I've been thinking about for a while.
Isn't it time to stop using the term "mainstream media?"

Does it really exist anymore? If I were sitting in Pakistan right now and I wanted to know the scores from last week's high school basketball games in Podunk, Iowa, they're right at my fingertips. The iPhone began changing the definition of "media" in 2007. Which is a long time ago.
The "media" is wherever you choose to find it, and there are a lot of choices.
Newspapers are dead. Broadcast networks are dead. Cable is dead. Satellite likewise. The terms "mainstream media" and certainly " national news" have become passe.
We just don't know what terminology to use in their stead.

But I'm betting he'll still have to revisit those "who can board and ride" policies and his company will make him sign a statement saying he'll abide by them in future, because that's how bus companies (particularly the large conglomerates that own a ton of smaller ones) roll: One size fits nobody.

Ask FenSpouse, I'm betting he backs me up on this.

169 137 Granholm will be a board member for Edison International, a major utility holding company, and she will also sit on the board for Southern California Edison (SCE), a subsidiary of the holding company, Edison International announced on Thursday. SCE was part of a group of California-based entities that received $600 million in taxpayer cash from Granholm’s Department of Energy (DOE) in August 2024.

See this has to stop. The revolving door option needs to be legislated against. Someone here had some good ideas a few days ago, things like after leaving gov. employment one cannot join private entity in same or cognate field for 10 years and also for family members. Maybe 12 years (2 senatorial terms) or even 20?

The CNO has not been responsive to getting the Navy in a material condition to fight. Lack of pressure on NAVSEASYSCOM, lack of rigor in assignments, poor ammo logistics management, etc. etc.

These are the underlying causes.

But they don't have cash lying around and attempting to tax them would crash the economy even if they tried to comply. Then, after that was done, every single rich person in the country would move their money out of the country.
