Sefton: sefton at cutjibnewsletter.com | THE MORNING RANT: Taxpayer-Subsidized “Clean Tech” Ventures in Support of the “EV Transition” Are Starting to FoldA company that produces special materials to contain fires in electric vehicles has ceased construction of its partially built Georgia factory, jeopardizing a project that promised to employ 250 workers. Executives at Massachusetts-based Aspen Aerogels said Thursday during an investor call that the company is indefinitely halting construction on its 500,000-square-foot factory near Register, which is about 12 miles outside of Statesboro. The factory had already broken ground and received approval for a $671 million federal loan to assist with construction last fall. The loan was part of a flurry of construction financing approved for clean tech projects in the waning months of the Biden administration.Of course, Gov. Kemp and fellow Georgia leaders threw taxpayer dollars at Aspen Aerogels to incentivize it to build the plant for an industry that didn’t actually exist at the time. Reading the financial statements of these companies entertains me, and a quick glance reveals that over the past four-full years, Aspen Aerogels has never turned a profit, losing a cumulative $187 million. Its stock is down 85% from its peak in 2021. This is the kind of company in which Joe Biden and Brian Kemp like to “invest” taxpayer money. The factory would have built batteries to store electricity produced by renewable sources and release it later, company officials said. It would have been the second-largest battery factory worldwide when it was announced in 2023. But Freyr, a startup founded in 2018, never began construction on the 368-acre site.Freyr Battery is a start-up company with the stated goal of “decarbonizing transportation systems,” so of course Brian Kemp and the state of Georgia threw taxpayer money at it. Why wouldn’t a Republican governor give taxpayer money to a start-up whose goal is the elimination of gas-powered vehicles, and the freedom that comes with them. The Georgia Department of Economic Development said the state conveyed a $7 million grant to buy a site for Freyr in Newnan, about 35 miles southwest of Atlanta. Department spokesperson Jessica Atwell said the state and company are “working together” to ensure the money is “repaid expeditiously.”Good luck getting “repaid expeditiously.” Freyr Battery has lost $83 million through the first three quarters of its current fiscal year, and it lost a combined $173 million over the previous two full years. Its stock price has collapsed by 85% since its peak in 2022. The day before Novonix, an Australian battery manufacturing company, went before the Chattanooga City Council to ask its members to support a $54 million net tax incentive deal, its leaders laid off about a fifth of its Chattanooga-area employees. And…the awful financial report: Novonix has lost $28 million through the first two quarters of its current fiscal year, after losing $46 million in the previous full year. Its stock has collapsed by 94% since peaking after its public offering in 2022. And the cherry on top is that Novonix’s CPA is warning that “These conditions give rise to a material uncertainty which may cast significant doubt over the Group’s ability to continue as a going concern.” This is CPA talk meaning the company’s financial health is very bad, with a dire prognosis. Perhaps I shouldn’t be getting such pleasure from the failure of these ventures, but each of these failures is a significant victory in both the culture war and the overall battle for economic freedom. Central planners such as Joe Biden and Brian Kemp decided to choose “winners” that could only economically succeed if our freedom of choice was exterminated. The central planners lost, and freedom is winning. [buck.throckmorton at protonmail dot com] Comments(Jump to bottom of comments)1

TBH, I'm a little surprised that Aspen Aerogels didn't make it. If there's one thing that EVs require, it's a good way to put out fires. The Navy has developed new materials for extinguishing fires shipboard that replace the perfluorinated compounds that have everyone so exercised (especially lawyers), although I don't know how well they'd work for Li battery fires. I don't know what AA was pushing for their product line, or if they ever had a viable product line at all.

They portray themselves as leaders, but couldn't wait to get in line and be part of the "new thing" Too bad they got to use taxpayer money to do it. It might not be unrelated that a number of high-end hybrid vehicles have been delated because of problems sourcing batteries and hybrid components. The Lambo Revuelto was delayed almost two years. The Porsche GTS is delayed 6 months. This is anecdotal, but it seems odd that companies with this kind of clout are having sourcing problems.

A development company bought it and arranged a deal with Canadian battery company Zinc8 to build a large facility. The battery company fell apart , though the loans that were talked about weren't given out yet. When last seen that company is now a penny stock. Oh, and the head of the development company died

USPS is a quasi governmental agency.
"The U.S. Postal Service is the only delivery service that reaches every address in the nation: Nearly 167 million residences, businesses and Post Office Boxes. The Postal Service generally receives no tax dollars for operating expenses and relies on the sale of postage, products and services to fund its operations." The Postal Service is also the only independent federal establishment that can be assessed penalties and fines for noncompliance by OSHA. The latter is about worthless, too, imo. Search rendered page after page of #OrangeManTariffsBad headlines. I did find this bit of history fascinating (as I was unaware of it -- and presume the analysis is likely biased & flawed): [From AOL "News" (WTAF? AOL is still around?):] "Using Tariffs to Try to Annex Canada Backfired in the 1890s" [Pull Quote:] "The push to make Canada part of the U.S. reached a fever pitch following passage of the highly protectionist McKinley Tariff in 1890, which raised average tariff rates to around 50%. To pressure Canada into joining the U.S., the McKinley tariff explicitly declined to make an exception for Canadian products. Republicans hoped that Canadians, who were becoming ever more reliant on the U.S. market, would be eager to become the 45th state to avoid the punishing tariffs ... it actually had the opposite effect." https://is.gd/7ZMlwh Posted by: ShainS -- The Deep State Dies in Daylight AND Dharma at February 21, 2025 11:53 AM (1YwYn) 236

Without them to process tens of thousands of ballots, allowing the left to launder the fraudulent ballots, the steal doesn't happen. I am sure were several top-level USPS managers who worked closely with the left to help them identify the exact weak spots to insert the ballots into the mail stream. The only problem with this is the optics that the Left will use to show republicans as anti-progress at all costs. We need to restate that we support better, cleaner, more cost-effective alternatives to energy sources we rely on, but we're not ready or willing to commit national suicide to prop up untenable, costly non-alternatives for the sake of virtue signaling.

I was at the Toronto auto show last weekend, and every single manufacturer was pushing EVs _hard_. There were maybe a half dozen models total, across all manufacturers, that _weren't_ EVs or hybrids, and that includes trucks. Rivian was there, along with a number of EV vendors I've never heard of. (Notably absent: Toyota, Honda and Mazda).
Either they weren't able to adjust trajectory in time for the show, or Canada is going to be the dumping ground for these unsellable units since we still have all the subsidies. Posted by: Daniel Ream at February 21, 2025 01:45 PM (LgYtf) 283
Excellently timed Rant, Buckster. Excellent.
Brian Kemp... This is not different than USAID for godsakes. No wonder why Kemp allowed his election board to illegally change their election procedures in 2020. Taxpayer grift and kickbacks, all the way down and back. A$$holes. Posted by: Danimal28 at February 21, 2025 03:00 PM (1E4GV) Posted by: hate_the_deepstate at February 21, 2025 04:18 PM (8nX01) 285
