The Classical Saturday Morning Coffee Break & Prayer Revival

morejoecoffee.jpg

[H/T Hrothgar]

Good morning boys, girls and everything in between. Before we enter the Prayer Revival just a few housekeeping matters to go over. (Rulz for those of you in Bayfield)

1) This is an open thread. Feel free to lurk, opine and/or bloviate.
2) Be kind, be nice. And no jumping on or from the furniture.
3) Running with sharp objects is up to you. But this is a No Sympathy Zone for that.
D) Have a great weekend!

AoSHQ Weekly Prayer List

Please submit any prayer requests to me, “Annie’s Stew” at apaslo atsign hotmail dot com. Prayer
requests are generally removed after four weeks unless we receive an update.

Prayer Requests:
12/14 – Jewells is still in a lot of pain. The drain was put in on 12/11. She was supposed to receive a
sedative and medication for pain while they worked, and she received nothing. She felt everything and it
hurt like hell. It also hurts when it is being drained, and that is daily for the first week. She has a great
home health nurse coming in now, and she has shown Jewell’s daughter and husband how to do it.
1/31 Update – The excruciating pain in her left arm was because it was broken. The brittleness of her
bones from chemo caused the break to spontaneously occur. It now has a splint.
1/4 – Smell the Glove asked for prayers for an 80 year old aunt. The aunt was diagnosed with colon
cancer and started treatment this week.
1/31 Update – The aunt has gone through her 12 treatments and is doing well. It knocks her flat for a
couple of days but she’s a tough old bird. Prayers for all of the Horde and their loved ones in need.
1/4 – vmom deport deport deport asked for prayers for her eldest sister. It looks like her illness is
cancer.
1/12 Update – Please keep praying. Her sister has stage 4 breast cancer.
1/30 Update – Her sister has gone to her eternal rest. Please pray for her soul and for the consolation
of her daughters.
1/11 – Our Country is Screwed asked for prayers. He is having a double mastectomy. (He notes: Yes,
male breast cancer is a thing!) He is fortunate that it appears to be localized. Another request is for an
aunt (age 70+) who is facing lung cancer and having part of her lung removed. She is scared and needs
prayers too.
1/31 Update – The surgery went well (bilateral mastectomy). Now he is waiting for the pathology
report to learn what the next steps are – chemo and/or radiation. Thank you for the prayers for his 70
year old aunt. Her surgery was moved up to 2/3.
2/15 Update – Our Country is Screwed send thanks to everyone here for their thoughts and prayers as
he continues his cancer treatment. Radiation treatment is almost a definite, and chemo is still TBD.
There is no way he could have gotten through this thus far without God’s healing power and everyone’s
prayers. Thank you.
1/15 – Sponge gave an update on his wife. She met with the radiation oncologist, and he used the word
“cure”, so she is pretty happy about that. She has a couple more chemo treatments to go.
2/13 Update – His wife got a reprieve from the oncologist and does NOT need to get the last round of
chemo. She will start the process of radiation prep next week, and may start the 19 rounds next week as
well.
1/18 – FenelonSpoke asked for prayers for Chris, the new husband of a friend of hers. They have been
married since the summer, and are nice conservatives and Catholics. He is hospitalized with a high fever
and urinary issues, which he has had a long time.

1/25 Update – Chris came home on 1/20. He is doing better. The infection was removed by IV
antibiotics, but the doctors still need to determine why he’s having excessive urination – up to 20 times
a night – which is exhausting for them both. Continued prayers are appreciated.
1/18 – Jrgunn77 requested prayers for health, which was fine a few months ago, but recently has been
his with extremely high BP spikes, anxiety attacks, constant headaches, and hernia troubles. Jrgunn is on
meds for the BP and anxiety, scheduled for a colonoscopy, and has referrals for a cardiologist and
neurologist. These out of the blue anxieties are the worst. Jrgunn also asked for prayers for a friend from
church, Rodney, who has recently suffered lung failure and is on oxygen, to come home from the
hospital, and Pastor Ben and his brother, for comfort after the passing of their little sister from drug
addiction.
2/11 Update – Jrgunn77 is still stuck at home, trying to recovery from pneumonia. Rodney, his friend
from church, is in a bad way. His lungs have begun stiffening and his ability to breathe is severely
compromised. His only hope is a lung transplant. He is sedated, and surrounded by his family. In times
like these, it’s difficult to know how to pray, but please do.
1/18 - Teresa in Fort Worth said she could use some more Horde prayers. She had a CT scan on Monday.
The largest tumor has not increased, but at least 4 others have quadrupled in volume, despite 2 rounds
of chemo. Her third round of chemo stats on Wednesday. So far, she’s had exceptionally light nausea
which has been controlled with medication, which is a blessing.
2/12 Update – Teresa got the results of her tumor marker test back. After stopping the chemo (which
wasn’t working), and after 2 weeks of targeted gene therapy, her markers have dropped way down! This
means the therapy is working!
2/15 Update – Teresa posted good news and bad news. The good news is that her new medication is
working – her tumor marker test levels have dropped a lot (from 596 to 34.. The bad news is that she
is experiencing one of the side effects of this medication – blurred vision. They are going to stop with
the meds for 2 weeks, and see if her vision improves, she can go back on a lower dosage of the
medication. Her next CT scan is in April.
1/25 – Sal asked for prayers for a couple he volunteers with. The husband, a retired pastor, has been
diagnosed with congestive heart failure. They are both in their mid-80s and surgery is not an option for
him.
2/15 Update – Please continue prayes for Pastor Bill, who is very discouraged with the complications
from his tests and procedurs, and for his wife, who is his main caregiver at home.
1/25 – Grammie Winger asks for prayers that everything goes well, as Rev finally has his colostomy
reversed this week.
2/19 Update – Rev is back in the hospital. At his follow-up appointment on 2/18, the surgeon sent him
to ER. They said he had AFib and his blood pressure was bad, 80/39. Grammie Winger would appreciate
prayers.
1/25 – Lizzy requested prayers for her colleague, Sally, who was dealing with some GI issues. This week,
after a trip to ER, they found and removed a mass. They are waiting for more information now, and
praying it’s not cancer.
1/25 – A asked for prayers for her nephew’s wife, who was just diagnosed with brain cancer. Please pray
for a miracle that they are able to remove it all.

1/30 – KT had asked for prayers as she had a stroke earlier in the week. She is still at the hospital be
feels very lucky, considering what happened.
2/8 Update – KT is home from the hospital now and feeling grateful. She posted that her GP said to
light a candle to God, because He saved her life. There don’t seem to be many after-effects from the
stroke. She will need to keep working on staying healthy.
1/31 – BurtTC posted that his son, who had Down Syndrome, had died. BurtTC tried to give him as good
a life as possible. It wasn’t a protracted illness, but he was expected to recover. BurtTC says that he
doesn’t believe his son needs prayers; God now has the purest of souls to hold and protect. Please pray
for those of us who knew and loved him. The loss is immeasurable. BurtTC asks that instead of
condolences, that you would hold close those you love, and be kind to each other.
1/31 – From about that time asked for prayers for a SIL, who was suddenly terminated from the only job
he’s held in his adult lifetime, with the second child on the way. Please pray it works out for the best.
1/31 – Tonypete asked for prayers for his wife’s buddy Barb, who is either bi-polar or manic depressive
and doesn’t know it. She is a disaster and very unhappy. Prayers for healing would be greatly
appreciated.
1/31 – Just Sayin posted that s/he has brain cancer and will be gone soon, and asked that the Horde
keep fighting the good fight.
1/31 – L asked for prayers for her daughter, Shannon, who is scheduled for surgery on 3/11. She will be
traveling to Cleveland on 2/27 for a pre-op meeting. She will be staying in town for the weeks before the
operation, so they will have some time together. (As a Franciscan sister, she has spent much of the last
20 years in other states.) L thanks the Horde for their prayers. Shannon’s community will be praying, as
well.
1/31 – Bif Bewalski gave an update on Smash. The blood work confirmed that she does not have
pancreatitis. They gave her fluids, 3 types of digestive system meds via IV, and then ignored her for 8
hours. Anyway, she is home and feeling better.
2/7 – Weird Dave requested prayers for his sister, Susan, who had a major heart attack.
2/13 Update – Weird Dave posted his thanks for their prayers for his sister. She passed away, and her
organs have already saved several other lives. You’ll never know how much all of y’all’s support means
to his family.
2/8 – Sock Monkey posted that his family needs some serious prayers. He didn’t want to get into details,
but his daughter and 5 grandchildren are now living with them. There is abuse and addiction involved.
2/8 – MammaB asked for prayers. She said she needs surgery, and has been preparing for it for several
months, jumping through the hoops put up by the clinic and insurance. Last Wed. she was told
everything was complete and she could have surgery in 8-10 weeks. On 2/7, the surgeon’s office threw
up another roadblock, one that is very difficult to manage. She is feeling discouraged and asks for the
Horde’s prayers.
2/8 – Pollywog the Ette asked for prayers for Inspector. He injured his rotator cuff last weekend, and
even with muscle relaxants and narcotics he gets muscle spasms every time he tries to lay down. That

means he’s had to sleep in a chair all week, so he isn’t sleeping well. It’s also making his feet and legs
swell, which is bad. Besides the pain, he hasn’t been able to work for a full week because it’s his right
arm that’s injured and he can’t type – even if he could sit in his office chair. Please pray for healing and
continued forbearance by his employer. Mostly what he wants right now is to be able to sleep.
2/15 – FenelonSpoke requested prayers. She thinks that the church hierarchy is wanting her out, so they
can close her church and take the money from the sale of the land (which technically belongs to the
denomination anyway). They are a small congregation, but they love one another. Even if the
denomination doesn’t close the church, a new pastor would not be helpful at this point.
2/15 – Cannibal Bob posted his thanks, to God and the Prayer Warriors here. He had posted under the
name “Diddly Squat” about severe pain in his legs, and it was sent on to the prayer list. After several
misdiagnoses, he was told he would probably lose his leg above the calf. After more research, Heidi
found a genius surgeon in Albuquerque. Cannibal Bob has had surgery and will continue to have full use
of his leg. He says he is convinced it is due to the Prayer Warriors here. Thank you all. God is great, and
so are you.
2/15 – Ben Had asked for continued prayers for Jim SND. He hasn’t been on the ONT for a while now.
2/15 – screaming in digital posted an update on her mother. Mom was deemed eligible for LTC benefits
after 1 appeal. (Thanks again to Grateful for advice in bolstering the appeal!) She submitted the first
claim a couple of weeks ago. She hasn’t received the funds yet, but the online system says it was
approved. They are looking at assisted living options now. Screaming in digital realizes Mom can’t live
with her indefinitely, despite her continued sweetness and (usual) cheerfulness.
2/18 – Teresa in Fort Worth asked for prayers for her husband’s niece, Amanda, who has just been put on the waiting list for another new heart. After 4 years with her first donor heart, her body is starting to reject it. She is only 40 years old, and has had heart issues her entire adult life. Please pray that Amanda’s body would stay well long enough for her to have another transplant. And also prayers for the family of this as-yet-unknown donor. Amanda knows full well what her receiving a new heart “means”
to the donor family.

For submission guidelines and other relevant info, please contact Annie's Stew, who is managing the prayer list. You can contact her at apaslo at-sign hotmail dot com. If you see a prayer request posted ina thread comment, feel free to copy and paste it and e-mail it to Annie's Stew. She tries to keep up withthe requests in the threads, but she's not here all of the time, so she may not see it unless you e-mail it to her. Please note: Prayer requests are generally removed after four weeks or so unless we receive an
update.

2 Corinthians 4:8-9
We are troubled on every side, yet not distressed; we are perplexed, but not in despair, persecuted, butnot forsaken; cast down, but not destroyed.

I just finished a blog post (link in nic) about my frustration with the Catholic leadership, which keeps repeating that the immigration system is broken, but refuses to offer a solution.

I think the reason is obvious - they really want open borders, but to say that means embracing heresy, so they can't do that. They also can't name a number without having to defend it, so they say it's bad, without ever describing the nature of the badness.

The Killer Kittenz From Outer Space are sprawled on the carpet and thinking whatever cat thoughts they own -- possibly remembering the fun murder of a spider or a lizard.

The Annual Insanity -- "Festival!!! Festival!!!!", aka Mardi Gras -- has ramped up, including a family-oriented event out in the suburbs right across from the remaining big mall. Which we were thinking of going to. Unh-uh. It would be wise of me to avoid any unnecessary driving in town until Ash Wednesday. There's a parade in my neighborhood next Saturday, but it doesn't block my entrance to the complex here, so that's not too much of a worry.

This is the deep breath before the plunge into the Epstein Client List.

Also, FBI revelations will be ongoing. Now that real negotiations for peace are underway, Ukraine's troops are going to start disengaging because no one wants to be the last casualty in a lost war.

I expect DoD will also feature heavily as the generals are laid off.

70 Hoyt had an interesting post this morning:

https://accordingtohoyt.com/2025/02/21/battle-fatigue/

Apparently, there are folks of the Conservative and (glarp!) Libertarian persuasion who don't feel that "It's Christmas Every Morning!!!"(TM), but instead-

are falling for the most clever of the Leftard Psy-Ops, that says "Well, I didn't expect a chainsaw!!11!!! Maybe Trump should be using a scalpel. An itty bitty teeny tiny very limited in scope scalpel. A precise microscopic scalpel, as it were. Ima skeerd o'that chainsaw!!!1111!"

I get it. Even some of the morons/ettes on this here very blog have kinda sorta said the same thing.

I think basically that two things are at work here:

1) Like it or not, this is a kill the king moment as in, if you strike at the king, you must kill him. And the king is the Deep State. That is why things must move so fast and they need to keep moving fast in exposing and then eliminating the Deep State Hydra's power tooth by tooth, claw by claw.

The relentless aggression of this moment is probably scary for some. This is not a moment for politics. This is a moment for policy. If you get what I mean.

So, (con't)

76 I hope Trump can really get around to lifting the tax on Social Security, if not abolishing income tax entirely. My pension is a small enough income (by IRS standards) that, if SS is not taxed, I would owe very little each year. And once I buy a house, there are deductions one can take (right? still true?) that might exceed the standard deduction amount. This would be the first year of my working life where itemizing might work out better for me than taking the standard.

I think it is less a psyop than the fact that a lot of people aren't comfortable being happy. They need something to complain about, something that won't be fixed, because if it is fixed, their excuse for being unhappy is gone.

I had to end relationships with people over this, because at a certain point, all the complaining wears thin.

This is why I limit my time on the daily threads. When I first ended my exile, it was wonderful, but even if the people have changed, there are still the same negative personalities who want to bitch about everything.

Hand them a dollar and they ask for two. No, this one is crumpled. Three would be better. Why not five? No, that bill has a slight tear, see? I can't use that one.

And so on. This is especially true in people who make their living on complaining.

Property and Sales Tax deductions are capped at $10K.

Well, the standard deduction is $29k, for married filing jointly, so your SALT plus charitable donations would need to exceed that to make itemizing worthwhile. There is medical expenses too, but those have to exceed a percentage of your income to start counting.

This is the narrative they've chosen. They will push it relentlessly--every action, and of course any misstep, of DOGE or Trump's reforms will be proclaimed as a sign of an apocalyptic end of government and the abolition of safety nets by heartless zealots.

Trump and Vance need to cut this off at the pass. Trump just assumes everybody loves what he's doing. Maybe most do, but he, we cannot coast on that. I'd like to see a stronger PR drive for DOGE on the good it is doing and how it will reap benefits or average Americans. No, DOGE will not be painless in every sense. Americans were called to action for the good of the country in the past, and we need to be summoned again.

The media is the number one enemy. You cannot insult, degrade, humiliate and marginalize them enough. Just kicking out AP from the Oval Office isn't nearly enough.

Yeah, along with the "I worry that [insert amazing success] will lead to worse problems down the road" mentality.

It is much more rewarding to look for occasions of joy.

It's fine to be disappointed and sad when things go poorly, but then you need to contemplate all the good around you, and understand that everything is in alignment with God's purposes, and something that outwardly seems bad, often brings a hidden good. Our task is to find that good and be grateful for it.

Kind of like the fake borders in one of the eastern block countries were they'd convict you of trying to leave w/o an exit visa, put your ass in prison, and you believe you are guilty because you did try to get out?

"Why not both?" or several things, as I tend to think....

In the first few weeks it was hard for me to believe the Trump was going to keep up the attacks; getting ALL his nominees confirmed is a big help (and a signal that something has changed, wonder when or if we'll know the details of how that happened). We know 'no battle plan survives contact with the enemy' so there *will* be counter strikes, and this will cause pain and possibly some deaths.

I suspect some fear may derive from the realization that this process requires a degree of 'audience participation'.

It also helps that I believe whatever OrangeManBad's intentions may be, there is Someone who can use them for His own purposes.

A return this year from the state and the feds. Documents returned via Intuit by email in a pdf format. Open, electronically sign and return to the accountant. Invoice generated and payed via an email link. Print documents for our file and now the wait for the electronic deposits.
PDT/Vance hopefully draining the swamp and an easy tax season. Mr. nec and I even got through the prep without any arguing.

The entire viewing audience of MSNBC and CNN could fit into a single stadium. Think about that.

Rogan's most boring, underperforming podcast draws more eyeballs that all of the MSM combined.

Trump is at his highest approval ever, and the effects of his policies are only starting to be felt.

Let's also keep in mind that DOGE is an inside baseball kind of thing for most people. Far more impactful are keeping men out of the little girls' room, and the Dems have now TRIPLED down on that.

Also chemically castrating kids and cutting off their genitals. They have planted the flag on that hill.

These are visceral issues, 90-10 (they poll 80-20, but half who say they support it are just trying to back the Party, personally they find it abhorrent).

DOGE will recede in importance in the next few months, only surfacing during budget battles.

A lot of criminal activity is going to come out into the open on both sides. The Deep State has files to enforce compliance and Trump and Vance - who are squeaky clean - will release it.

There will also be election audits that may reverse the vote tallies in Michigan, Wisconsin and Arizona senate races. There is no earthly way CIA Slotkin got votes from Trump supporters, nor is it plausible that people would "undervote" by skipping the top of the ticket.

218 Procrastinators on their tax filings can always file a extension and then hope for some type of disaster declaration to hit their area. You might get several extra months to file as you're cleaning up.

Hurricane Beryl blew through Texas in early July 2024 and with the disaster declaration, the October 15th deadline for filing extended tax returns got further extended to February 3rd, 2025.

Can't say I recommend this strategy though.

219 >>>All my tax stuff is in piles ready to go to the CPA. I'm not about to try to figure this crap out. They use the TR software too.

I used to help my wife during tax season with entry of client data into the TR software. Other than the occasional hic-up which requires a phone call to TR tech support to unfuck, it's pretty slick.

And it should be as she pays an annual licensing fee of somewhere in the neighborhood of $12K for the tax portion of the software.

The whole point of keeping RUSSIA an antagonist was to force us to maintain overly large ground forces when we should be focusing on naval, aerial and space assets. The Army should have only 100,000 active soldiers with the rest going into reserve units, which could be vastly enlarged at less cost, especially when these pointless peacetime deployments stop.

The "tell" is the Army wanting all new tanks and rifles, when the experience of Ukraine fighting shows that neither are necessary. We we have will work just fine, but the contractors need money and they run the show.

245 It's nowhere as bad as portrayed in the MSM & by some loudmouths in Congress.

Government Executive, Broad exemptions to Trump's federal hiring freeze begin to take shape
The Defense Department is indicating it will allow hiring to continue for all civilian positions. January 22, 2025

Government Executive, Some fired probationary feds are receiving unexpected emails: 'You're re-hired'
Some offices within federal agencies are backtracking on their recent firing sprees. February 19, 2025

Then there'll be the shift by all interested parties and the next news will be: Oh, but the uncertainty of their futures! Like they don't have less of a problem than all at-will employees.

The new hires will find their biggest problem will be to stay out of the way, or be humble and very helpful to their senior level employees, especially those involved with union and managerial groups. There's no equality in gov. service.

BTW, so much drama because of Trump but all through federal civil service, up through the administrations of Bush/Cheney, there were RIFs, base closures, reorganizations, buy outs, and so on. And there were 30 day layoff/job loss notices - or less - too.

Nazi Germany was hugely hampered by the incredible greed of its weapons contractors. No effort to rationalize production and standardize designs until it was too late.

We're doing the same thing for the same reason - development is more profitable than actual production because once you put them in service, they have to actually work.

Pre-production and prototypes are basically freebies for the contractors. If they fail, oh well, back to the drawing board.

Its not the lack of air superiority - its picking your leadership because they are politically loyal, not because they have actual talent.

They are fighting a 1914 style war because they have military leaders less competent than the allies had in 1914 who've made their careers on learning nothing.

This is actually the case a lot in entrenched systems. I have pointed it out at numerous sites when I have been asked to take a look at them. Crappy supervisors pick people who are loyal (but can have any other negative trait like laziness, stupidity or whatever.) They do not want anyone who could be a threat.

People who actually want to fix things do not care if their underlings are ambitious and capable.

Got mine, too. I think they're routine for this time of the year and I've always tossed them.

I try to give generously, often through special funding locally (i.e, towards an elevator for a Parish Hall because it can't be made IDA compliant; food donations for local shelter aid programs, Christmas gift giving for families, etc.)

Thanks to redistricting, I'm on the dodgy side of the county but better off than many for now. Since the "end of C19 funding," property & school taxes are taking a serious toll on seniors, small businesses not NPs and being gov. backstopped, and the essential workers in grocery stores, assisted living facilities, etc.

I hope a lot of people can hang on to the point to they'll understand the good this new administration can achieve for them, too.

Its true. The way you fix this in companies is rewarding the managers of successful employees as well - so if line employee Smith solves a problem that earns the company a bunch of money you also reward his manager Jones because you WANT your managers to encourage problem solving and saving the company money. This is often how you can tell well managed companies from poorly managed ones.

This doesn't scale particularly well in private industry and often has negative implications in large bureaucracies.

So at ACME Inc if line employee Smith reduces the number of people you need on the factory line by 10% its an obvious win. If line employee Smith reduces the number of people you need pushing papers at the DoE though at some level of management you've reduced someone's empire and they will fire your ass for it. And your manager too.

Historically it was pretty common. If an enemy took your people hostage and you believed you could beat them in a war you would. Because to do otherwise would just encourage more hostage taking. And then generally if you did win and your enemies killed those hostages you'd just inflict more suffering on them and let the world know why because again the 1st goal of all this is to make sure other groups don't believe they can get an advantage by taking your people hostage.

Trump gets pretty agitated when discussing J6, and specifically the J6 committee. Although Pelosi got a pardon as part of the committee, she wasn't singled out for some of the other shit she's done.

She won't get to upstage anyone by tearing up Trump's SotU speech since she's not speaker right now.

Whether she's laying low because of her hip or something else is debatable. But I'd like Trump to politically take her down this year. Putting her in prison, where I think she belongs, would be sweet, but probably not going to happen.

Early on their were reports of them destroying tanks via drones, and I think this was likely true - I'd argue the first lesson of the Uke war was "if you can see it you can kill it"

But after the Russians changed their tactics to stop exposing tanks though 1940s style massed armor attacks there have been a bunch of videos of the Ukes using drones against infantry but reading the actual combat reports from both sides drones don't seem an important item anymore.

Moka pots are pretty cheap and make a good cup of coffee. I have a stainless steel one that I like better than any of the aluminium ones I have had. If you get the two or three cup ones, they make a single mug or two of coffee. It is essentially a stove top Keurig.
Bialetti is still a major maker, though a lot of companies make them now. Stainless steel IMHO is the best bet.

One, you have to keep them clean, and two, you can't let it sit too long on a hot burner or it will burn the rubber gasket and make all your subsequent cups taste like vulcanized rubber, until you replace the gasket

You can get get replacement gaskets, they are cheap. You should get a couple to start with because you will eventually burn the original one.

445 "There’s really no need for thousands [of] bureaucrats at the IRS."

And as another way to think about this, if there really is a bunch of tax money the government should be getting and isn't, the easier answer is to change the way the government collects taxes so it doesn't rely on normal people understanding the tax code and than auditing random people to find ones that are cheating.

Again in the private sector this sort of stuff is obvious - if you have an archaic payment system where your customers keep telling you they can't understand how much they are supposed to pay you change your payment system, you don't just start auditing random customers and assume fear will make the rest learn your system.

I've seen videos of Russian aircraft engaging Uke air defense. I assume they are mostly fake (what was the video game the Ghost of Kiev videos came from?) but...layered air defense is hard to defeat

And while the Russian airforce is stronger then the Ukes, I don't think it is really built for this sort of task like ours is. So if they engaged the Ukes along the front they'd take heavy losses and they can mostly hit things they want with cheap artillery anyway.

Ironically of course, if the Russian goal was to destroy Kiev and other Uke cities to deprive them of an industrial base than it would likely be worth it to use your air resources this way - just like we did in a limited fashion in Vietnam under Nixon for example.

Pissed me right off. In the '90s, one of my cousins discovered his ex did something similar. She withdrew their daughter to "homeschool" - as in, the poor girl went from first grade to being a housekeeper and a diaper-changer for her half-siblings. By the time the court got involved, she had missed years of school and interactions with children her age.

And still there's no follow-up to find out if the kids are okay.

I still see people who say "Russia can't even take Kiev."

Which is just one of those things that gets said, by people who are either ignorant or intentionally lie.

It would be roughly as silly as saying in 1991 "The U.S. can't even take Baghdad."

482 I still see people who say "Russia can't even take Kiev."

I suspect Russia doesn't want to take/heavily damage Kiev because:

1) It would give the FNM a sob story that they could use to try to persuade the US/Europe to send more resources to Ukraine

2) The entire Uke economy is being paid out by the US/Europe so Kiev is mostly an important rail line and nothing more

3) The Russians don't want to spend more of their own resources than they have to to take the disputed Eastern provinces. They don't want Kiev to take in an angry minority that will just cause trouble for decades...

The lie of "they can't take Kiev" is part of the bigger lie, that this war was about conquest and expansion by the Russians.

They didn't want Kiev, they don't want Kiev, they don't need Kiev. They took lands they believe are ethnically Russian, and are legitimately part of Russia. Kiev is not.

They don't want to rule Ukraine, and they don't want to expand to the west.

That's the lie the Americans and Euros have been keeping alive, to fool gullible voters.

490 Seriously, what was actually wrong with the M9? I'm not a fan of its ergonomics, but they had product improved versions with customizable grips. Why go to the massive expense of retiring it just to use another 9 that is less reliable?

Posted by: Ace-Endorsed Author A.H. Lloyd at February 22, 2025 10:23 AM

The military is obsessed with "modularity", which basic translates to anything new has to be a Swiss Army knife or Leatherman tool. They want everything to have as many functions and configurations as possible with the theory being that it saves money. The reality, of course, is that like a Swiss Army knife or Leatherman it does have all these functions, but it does none of them nearly as well as a tool designed and built for a singular purpose. And it ends up costing more.

They released "The Other Side of Life" in the late '80s and lots of teenagers heard them for the first time. I saw them in the '90s, opening for The Beach Boys, or what was left of them.

I miss cheap tickets to open-air venues. Three Dog Night, Huey Lewis & the News... there were a lot of fun groups I saw for less than a day's pay.

-----------------
The Russian air force spent a lot of time and resources on fielding long range anti-ship missiles to defeat American carrier groups in a hypothetical WWIII. Only recently have they focused on long range anti-surface (ground) missiles that don't have a nuke on them.

I think there was something like "worth the effort" going on in Russian air force circles. Plus, their bomber fleet is dwindling. Most are in the far east where they're safer.

They could use their vast supply of SRBM's, IRBM's to do the job... if so inclined.

I actually like the M9 but the military should have gone to the Glock !7 decades ago. Its less expensive easy to operate and clean and reliable. We aren't doing competition shooting on the battlefield.
