Mitch McConnell Makes the Stunning and Brave Decision to Not Seek Reelection At Age 85

christopherpike.jpg
Mitch McConnell announces his retirement with his One Yellow Light

How did Pike communicate with just one light? This continues to distress me.

McConnell is 83 now, but would be 85 when he's up again in 2026.

I thought we knew he wasn't running again, but we didn't. I assumed he would just finish out his term and retire when he was defenestrated from a leadership position. But apparently, until today, he was still debating whether America could survive without him.

Sen. Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., will not run for re-election in 2026 and will instead retire, the longtime senator announced Thursday.

McConnell has served in the Senate for decades, including as Senate majority leader under President Donald Trump's first administration. McConnell is the longest-serving Senate party leader in U.S. history, and he announced his retirement on his 83rd birthday.

"Seven times, my fellow Kentuckians have sent me to the Senate," McConnell said in prepared remarks to the Senate floor. "Every day in between, I've been humbled by the trust they've placed in me to do their business here. Representing our commonwealth has been the honor of a lifetime. I will not seek this honor an eighth time. My current term in the Senate will be my last."

McConnell was first elected in 1984, and he plans to serve out the rest of his term ending in January 2027.

The announcement comes after a series of health scares for McConnell, who has frozen up during statements to the public on multiple occasions.

His office never provided an explanation for the episodes.

Yeah, that announcement that he was stepping down from leadership did seem to sow confusion about his future.

I'm glad he's done.

Seems to me we were all discussing a year or so ago, if he would retire BEFORE the 2024 election deadline, thus allowing the seat to stay empty until the next special election could be held... or in other words, wait until '26.

KY legislature changed the law to require a public special election (no appointment power). The previous law tried to leave the governor with appointment power but only from a list of GOP provided names. KY Constitution technically is silent on US senate seat vacancies but has general language that gives the governor the right to appoint people to fill vacant offices.

Beshears didn't like the GOP's newest law but has to keep his mouth shut about it because a special election is far more popular in KY among voters to fill the vacancy than any placeholder until Mitch's term is up. My guess is Beshears would appoint a Dem if Mitch steps down or dies and the whole mess will go to court (unless the US Senate intervenes. Senate is judge of their members in Article I and can resolve disputes about who holds the seat. Was fairly common back when state legislatures picked the Senators.

Nah, it's something more than that, the dude who ran against Beshear had been elected to statewide office by a number greater than Beshear got for Governor, Cameron lost around 400k votes from when he ran as AG.

What I think is that the GOPe like having a Donk in the Governors mansion, it gives them lots of leeway and plausible deniability to do GOPe things.

I think Cameron had two problems. He was black which did not play well in E. Kentucky possibly (haven't looked at vote splits in detail but there was some indication he did more poorly there) and Mitch hated him because of his being identified as pro Trump, pro MAGA. McConnell apparently has a cheat machine in some of the rural counties that probably relies on payola for votes. Been that way for over a century in those parts.

This woman is divorcing her husband because he booed Taylor Swift at the Super Bowl.

"I still don't think he believes me. But he might want to start because I just filed my paperwork at the courthouse... I have loved Taylor Alison Swift since I was 12 years old."

"When they put Taylor up on the Jumbotron, all of his buddies started booing, and my husband joined in. And that just tells me everything I need to know about that man because he didn't care that that would hurt my feelings. He just wanted to fit in with his boys. He didn't even care."

"Thankfully, I have a prenup. I'll be retaining all of my assets as well as the assets that I inherited with peace and love. He probably will not be returning to the Super Bowl anytime soon, so that's one less booer for you, Taylor, I love you."

For once, I am speechless. I can't believe people like this exist.

At some point prior to the two-part episode "The Menagerie", set in the year 2267, Pike is promoted to fleet captain. He is severely injured while rescuing several cadets from a baffle plate rupture on board a J-class training vessel, the delta ray radiation leaving him paralyzed, unable to speak, badly scarred, and using a brainwave-operated wheelchair for mobility. His only means of communicating is through a light on the chair: one flash meaning "yes" and two flashes indicating "no".

But I don't think the Lt. Gov to Gov comparison is ever very good.

Lt. Gov is like voting for Vice President, even if the vote is separate. It's largely a blind, purely partisan choice and has little to nothing to do with individual candidates. Governor is not that, it's the centerpiece of the campaign and more reliant on things like personality of the candidates.

163 #6 Why was Roddenberry unable to come up with something like a speaker instead of a one light system?
------------------------

Mainly because the plot required Capt. Pike to be unable to communicate. If he'd been able to simply *tell* everyone what was going on and what Spock was up to, the "wrapper" storyline they used to recycle the original pilot episode wouldn't work.

Realistically, yes -- even if 23rd-century medical science wasn't yet able to actually tap into Pike's brain and give him an artificial voice, there's no reason he shouldn't have been able to at *least* blink the light in Morse Code to communicate something more than just "yes" and "no".

That technically meets with approval of the KY Constitution without overriding the state legislature or its voters.

Even with solar charging for cars, you can only get so far and then hours of downtime to charge .

It controls movement, it controls how big your home is, it controls your ability to do things like cook a meal. All WEF style control.

Tillis and the last minute allegations against Hegseth comes to mind.

I think he had an uphill battle to win before then but GOPe got the bat signal to abandon him (and the rest of the GOP statewide ticket for races like AG, etc.). - whig

I wouldn't be surprised. It doesn't seem as if there was much vetting. I also seem to recollect that within a mere matter of a few days after the allegations were made, the press stopped pushing the stories about Robinson allegedly leaving comments on a pron site. The damage had been done, I suppose.

I think James Madison is right, too. Robinson's very conservative position probably alienated some of the so-called "moderate" Republicans, and, personally, I was floored when Robinson came out with an ad admitting that his own wife had had one.

Some combination of:
1. They was a time crunch. They were out of scripts and had to use the framing story and footage from the unaired pilot to cover two episodes.
2. They were short on money and maybe an actor with no lines is cheaper/doesn't get royalties (possibly a voice actor does).
3. There was a scene where "he keeps beeping 'no'"; if he could talk with a speaker you can't have that scene.

No, I reject this, Cameron got over 900k votes as AG, he got 630k votes for Governor.

As I've noted, the max cieling for a Donk in Ky is around 800k or so votes, the max GOP is 1.3M votes, so why would GOP voters be on fire to elect Cameron as AG, but not Governor?

Average post tax salary per annum in America is $58,000.

A $5,000 check from the government because it saved money is 8.6% of the average American's entire yearly take home.

An 8.6% bonus.

Better than I'm going to get from my actual company...percentage wise.

Yep. Otherwise the Majority Leader does not schedule a vote-it is a major blow to a Majority Leader losing a vote as it is never supposed to come to that. Means you are incompetent at your job because you inform the WH of the whip count and they then make the call to continue, withdraw, or delay. Optics also looks bad trying to delay appointment of a lawman with a bunch of shady expenditures unearthed already.

420 OT question

Does anybody know why my cell phone would keep cutting off while I'm talking to people? Need new phone or new battery?

Posted by: FenelonSpoke at February 20, 2025 02:02 PM (42Vb+)

Any number of reasons, but most likely interference with the signal to the towers due to wind, precipitation, distance, ground interference. At the low end of the scale, your phone negotiates a connection with the tower(s), which may be minimally enough to support speech communication (which is quite technologically demanding compared to data), and you would get intermittent dropped data (voice data) when conditions varied as above.

Could be your end; could be their end.

I simply hang up and try again in attempt to negotiate a better connection, which seems to solve the problem.

If you're in an area with spotty connection at home (for instance), consider getting a cellular extender device if your provider enables such, which allows your phone to send cellular calls over your home WiFi. It makes the difference for us between spotty 1 bar calls and 4 bar crystal clear voice calls.

425 Control is the main motivation for the push for electric. Heating oil is filled at home, gas is filled into your car, but electric is from a central source.

Even with solar charging for cars, you can only get so far and then hours of downtime to charge .

It controls movement, it controls how big your home is, it controls your ability to do things like cook a meal. All WEF style control.

________________

Same thing with HIGH. SPEED. RAIL. The idea is to get people out of their cars, where they can travel wherever, whenever they want, and to get them on trains. One commissar on the train platform saying, "Papers, please. Was this travel approved by the Politburo?" can control a whole bunch of people's movements.

Which is essential to a command economy. The Party sets wages in each district and assigns workers to locations (through the Labor Exchange). Can't have people moving around willy-nilly. Messes up the whole system.

499 The media industry watchers in here will love this.

Ne Zha 2 just came out in China.
It's a Pixar-style animated film based on some Chinese myth.

With a production budget of US$80 million, the film grossed US$1.7 billion, breaking multiple box-office records. It surpassed Inside Out 2 (2024) to become the highest-grossing animated film of all time, marking the first time a non-American, non-English-language animated film achieved this milestone.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ne_Zha_2

--- ---

$80 million budget, $1.7 billion gross, so far.
It hasn't even released in North America yet.

Inside Out 2 was made for $200 million and grossed $1.69 billion.

He was also unafraid when speaking on those subjects. What cost him the election was black and white female aversion to Robinson because of his pro-life stance and his brusque working class campaign style. NC voters like their leaders wearing suits and ties and talking about their college days. Working class politicians representing a major party is a jarring sight to the political salons in Charlotte and Raleigh, and the the local chapters of the MSM played it up to the hilt. Add to that, the GOP stalwarts in the General Assembly and the state Senate are entrenched and prefer to run to the show themselves. They wanted no part of a political firedbrand like Robinson in the Governor's Mansion.

He kept forgetting and also looked like he was going to fall over at any moment. you'd think a reasonable police force that hasn't had any big incidents in 50 years might just call the house first to see if anythings up, particularly with it happening all over. It's corruption fueled by kickbacks.

Lots of that going around these days. Political loyalty is rewarded with pay & perks to the end. I've been reading Part 1 of Morris's biography of Theodore Roosevelt. Government office tenure wasn't guaranteed or lasting then! A man could do an excellent job, then be turned out because the other party now had the White House, and he was replaced. Men usually retired to enjoy their pensions and some quiet time in their golden years.

First of all, I'm really sure that's not how the phrase "thirst trap" should be used.

Second, you can't "fix" a man and "make him better" if he's already doing the work to better himself.

Japanese people are very angry about the game, not surprisingly. It's based on a story of a real black guy in Japan in the 1500s, but he was the butler for a samurai and didn't kill people. The wokes decided that was close enough, and I believe also threw in hints that he's gay.

Trump is playing it well, even the lefty judges are starting to reject them outright with hemming and hawing. The directive from on top is no, you can't block the President's picks and hiring and firing power.

That's why I am less bothered about confirmation votes for Dems. Barring a foreign threat of treason, if the Dem wants a farcical director you might as well let him have it.
