Howdy Hordelings, and welcome to the Sunday ONT! Hope you enjoyed Valentine's Day weekend. No details, please - this is a family friendly establishment. Actually - go ahead and share whatever details you want as you step inside!

Team USA Hockey Dominates a Bunch of Hoseheads

The NHL season is on hiatus to allow for the 4 Nations Face-Off -- an international best-on-best tournament featuring NHL players from the U.S., Canada, Finland, and Sweden.

Last night, team USA took on team Canada. Seems as though some political tensions between the 2 neighboring countries may have spilled over into the game. The first 9 seconds of game time saw multiple fights.

Here is an extended look (4 mins) at the 3 fights.

Another short video recap. "The red, white, and blue went north of the border and bullied Canada."

Eco-Wacky or Cool Idea?

As long as it's never a forced practice, this actually isn't a stupid idea.

Eco-Funerals Now Feature World’s First ‘Living Coffin’ Made Out of Mushrooms

doof-ecocoffin.jpg

In the UK, a funeral company says they can now bury you in the ‘world’s first living coffin’, which is made out of mushrooms.

Containing no wood, the coffins are formed out of a mat of fibers including pliable mycelium—the root structure of mushrooms—and up-cycled hemp plants.

The thread-like mycelium, aids decomposition by breaking down biological matter—and it biodegrades within 45 days.

Made by Dutch company Loop Biotech, the coffins can be grown in just a week and the eco-friendly burials “feed the earth” as they mix with nutrients from the human decomposition.

98 I watched the original Goonies recently and there is way more footage of Keri Green's butt from right behind as she is crawling through the tunnels then I remembered watching the movie as a kid.

And it reminded me, you can often tell when a female character in a movie/show is about to have an action scene when she uncharacteristically switches to pants right before. I understand perfectly why, but it is funny as apparently all these female characters have their own version of Spideysense

What I wanted to comment on was this: Senor was well-prepared. Always polite & professional. And all of his questions were designed to elicit real information from Gantz. The home audience never got a WHIFF of Senor's own political views.

The interview was a throwback in that respect to the days of Lawrence Spivak and John Cameron Swayze.

Culling Poultry is an Ineffective and Costly Biosecurity Measure

Mallard ducks continually reinfect farms with mild H5N1 bird flu. Paying farmers to kill healthy flocks is driving up price of eggs, creating egg shortages. Agriculture policy should shift to allow natural immunity, increase the egg supply, and quell the outbreak.

Seriously it is just a long tradtion that a generation is 20 yrs. And is really an estimate on the short side. If you dig into your history the average is much older I've found.
Posted by: Farmer

Generation as in "how old were your parents when they had you?" is one thing.

Generation as in "everyone born between Year A and Year B is a member of Generation C" is something else.

They don't have much to do with each other. Since the Boomers got 20 years, a lot of early boomers had late-boomer kids.

"Generations" since then have been about 15 years.
Baby Boom = about 1945 to 1965
X = about 1965 to 1980
Y/Millennial = about 1980 to 1995
Z/Post-millennial = about 1995 to 2010
Alpha = about 2010 to 2025?
Beta = incoming

It's about time to give Alpha a real name. "Generation Covid," so we never forget?

I would propose splitting Boomers into Boomers I ('46 - ~55) and Boomers II (~55 - 64), because speaking as a Boomer II, we suffered from all the fallout from the older boomers stupidity. From dumbed-down high school curricula and 'double-sessions' (half the school went in the morning, the other half went at night) ridiculous housing prices (thanks Prop 13 in Calif), hardly any jobs or career advancement because there was always a more experienced boomer ahead of you, we caught the worst of the boomers selfish 'I got mine' mentality.

An important point. My parents were quite unconventional even by today's standards. Mom was two years older than Dad. They married in 1955 when they were in their late 30's. Mom was 40 when she had me. Dad fought in WWII, a lot of my friend's dads were barely even school age in WWII.

So I had 'old' parents compared to many of my peers which gave me a different perspective on many things.

Strauss and Howe's generation archetypes are interesting, and if you're aren't familiar with them, give it read. There's some curve-fitting and shoe horning going on there, but it's interesting.

According to their theories, we have a cycle that takes 4 generations. It's sort of the children rebel against the parents, but that cycle takes 4 generations.

The boomers are what they call the "prophet" generation, and GenX is the "nomad" generation.

In the last cycle, the Nomads were called the Lost Generation. Eisenhower and Patton were Nomads.

Elon Musk is Gen X.

418 416 TBH I don't think the boomer slamming is helpful and I'm not a boomer myself. Yes there were plenty of terrible boomers. But I've known some amazing ones as well. Canada-USA sure don't like each other. 3 distinct fights, at 2 seconds, 3 seconds and 9 seconds. That brought a tear to my eye. That was the 1980s hockey I saw at the Garden and love. Real rivalries out for blood. Rangers vs Isles/Flyers/Bruins/Canadians. Those Islander-Ranger games were lit, even pre-season ones. (That was when the Isles were winning their 4 Cups.) I've seen the goalies go at it numerous times. I saw one preseaon Flyers game where each team only had about 7 players left on the bench there were so many fights/game miscondiucts. That game last night, though I only saw the highlights, was a bone-cruncher. Old school hockey.

Having a grasp of LBJ is to understand how political and presidential power can be used. He was a master of that for sure and a complete son of a bitch. I highly recommend Robert Caro's soon to be five volume biography of LBJ.

Relevant to today is one idea he had is that power is where power goes. Today at the Daytona 500 with Trump flying over the racetrack and then that lap in the Beast reminds me of one LBJ campaign where he used a helicopter and a megaphone over small Texas towns. Genius stuff. That whole political theater exemplifies power is where power goes as does Trump projecting his political power indirectly by having JD give that speech in Munich that completely scrambled the entire established European order.

Felonious D. 2.0 understands power like nobody I've witnessed since LBJ.

In that Fourth Turning theory, the Boomers are of the "Prophet" generation archetype. During the last cycle, of which the Depression/WWII was the Crisis, the previous prophet generation was dubbed the Missionary generation. FDR (and the elders during WWII mostly) were of that generation.

All the archetypes have their pluses and minuses, with common themes of such running throughout.

The hippies and beatnik types were the prophets in their youth. They reject the existing system, and go off in some spiritual direction. The previous ones were more explicitly religious, while this last one was well, it had religious character, just not explicitly religious and even rejecting of traditional religion and all that.

This is pretty accurate. Every generation of so-called liberals since then has gone further and further left until we are where we are today which ideologically is pretty indistinguishable from the Bolsheviks in the 1930s and is a light year or two away from Freedom Riding for civil rights well, at the same time not being afraid to let the KKK have a march.

Reading Prairie Fire, the Weather Underground's manifesto is worthwhile reading and enlightening about what's happening with the left today.

Donald John Trump, born in June of 1946, is a Boomer I, indeed one of the oldest Boomers.

The term "Grey Champion" is used for the leader during a Crisis, and that comes from this from Nathaniel Hawthorne:

"Who is this gray patriarch? His hour is one of darkness, and adversity, and peril. That stately form, combining the leader and the saint…could only belong to some old champion of the righteous cause, whom the oppressor’s drum had summoned from his grave."

492 The thing about the Brennan's view on free speech is that it puts the info out there. You can look it up and see it is a lie in about 5 seconds. But it gets out there.

The difference between '88 and '92 was the Big Lie. And the lies have just gotten bigger and more blatant.

493 >> Every generation of so-called liberals since then has gone further and further left until we are where we are today which ideologically is pretty indistinguishable from the Bolsheviks in the 1930s

The Bolshies sucked, but they would have shot our leftists. At least they had a halfway reasonable ideal of the people who do the hard work in society benefitting more fully from their labor.

Their methods and results were awful, but the Bolsheviks would have been disgusted by our commies who valorize sloth and criminal behavior, fetishize LGBTQ, emphasize race/ethnicity/sex/gender over class, and look down on coal miners, farmers, and factory workers.

The modern left are more like post war Stalin and Beria. Or rather Beria. They want to be the one who buries the bodies of their enemies, and they will never believe they will get buried themselves.

499 Morning to all the insomaniacals across the vast AoSHQ Empire! 'Tis Monday, yes. But remember. Compared to being on the wrong side of the ground, even a bad Monday is pretty small kumquats, nicht wahr?

JQ, if you're here, thanks for your hat tip last week re: my upcoming retirement. (I almost wrote "impending," but that sounds bad, and this event is not.) How's your hubby doing?

Posted by: Wolfus Aurelius, Dreaming of Elsewhere at February 17, 2025 03:27 AM (omVj0)

500 Mornin' Wolfus!

Yay for your retirement! Hope you find a perfect place to settle in & enjoy it.

Hubby is doing ok with physical therapy, but not gaining much cognitively. *sigh*

We meet with the "care team" again on Tuesday. Hospice is still a likely possibility.

501 Odd dream. From '99 to '04, I drove an '86 Mercedes 420SEL, one of the big sedans with a V-8. A fine car, totaled while parked. Anyway, in my dream I still had it.

But on the rear third, trunk and fenders, the metallic gray paint had turned into a fine grayish powder. The rest was dirty, but okay. Though this was a hot day, there was still some snow (!) on the rear bumper and the taillights, which I brushed away, and found that part of the bumper was gone. Getting into the car, I found for the first time that the steering wheel was *retractable* -- when you turned the key, the post emerged from the dash, and then it sprouted the horn and wheel.

Then I was driving down a busy state highway. Steam began to plume from a vent on the hood (which the real car didn't have) and a "tow truck" light blinked on the instruments. I pulled over into a wrecking yard, got out and lifted the hood to let the steam vent, and walked in to ask for some water. The guy grinned evilly at me. "Yeah, we got a hose." And then I woke up.

505 468 BC's not actually in boston. False advertising
Posted by: SFGoth at February 17, 2025 01:39 AM (KAi1n)

Ahem. BC Alum here. Although Boston College's address is on Commonwealth Avenue in Chestnut Hill, an unincorporated village/suburb that straddles Newton and Brighton, on the Newton side), the main campus actually is partially in Boston city limits (and significantly so: i.e. the whole lower part of the main campus is in Boston, it includes the stadium, the field hose and several major dorms, and there is the Brighton Campus (the old catholic seminary). When the college was founded in 1863, it was located on the South End of Boston, so it was very much inside city limits. It moved to the current Chestnut Hill site sometime after 1907. In a bit of randomness, the President of Boston College, Father John Leahy, SJ will be in Singapore and we are having a local dinner for him with BC Alumni, this week!

Well, I wouldn't exactly call this one a nightmare. Though I loved the big 420SEL and would have hated to see it decline like that. And I was afraid I'd damage the engine if I kept driving without coolant, just as in real life.

That big car and I drove all over Denver and a good part of eastern CO until I left in late '01, and it brought me down to Da Swamp when I came back. And while the streets here were not kind to it, I continued with it until its totalling at 198K miles. I still miss it. In late '19 I spotted a similar one for sale in Michigan, in an *indoor* classic car shop, and you could tell it had been cared for, no corrosion. I thought of flying up, having it checked out, buying it, and driving it back down here to be a second car. Then I got what I think was the Coof and when I looked again, the car'd been sold. Darn.

509 My big Buicks, the Park Avenue and now the LaCrosse, had and have the same quality of ride that the 420 did: the feeling that you're king of the road, and that at speed, you are traveling at least twenty mph less than you actually are. You think you're doing 55, you look down, and oops! It's 75!

525 Did anyone notice the stage setup for Sonny and Cher - The Beat Goes On?
Cher is standing in a pit next to Sonny to make him appear the same height as her. Then they walk to the back of the stage behind a half wall so that the camera doesn't see what they are standing on so again Sonny appears to be the same height as Cher.
