A question, kinda related to "fundamentals" of a certain kind:
If you knew TEOTWAWKI was coming next weekend, and you had to plan on cleaning your guns after all the Ballistol, BreakFree, Hoppes, CLP. etc. were gone, what would you use to clean your weapon, particularly if you had to make it yourself? Posted by: GWB at February 16, 2025 07:08 PM (hzHvq) 20

Terrible showing at the thousand yard match. Day was ideal for shooting and I was using loads which had previously performed quite well. Range day is necessary to see if I can find the lands again and squeeze a few more rounds out of the 06. The new barrel cannot arrive soon enough. This was day I should have easily kept everything inside the 9 ring. I had trouble keeping things inside the 8 ring. Yeesh.
Speaking of loads, I had near disaster. I was loading some brass and, without thinking, loaded some 208 grain bullets on a load which is hot even for a 174 grain bullet. Fortunately, I caught it in time and took the rounds apart before they found their way into my rife. Whew! An erroneous charge of powder is one of the easiest mistake to make in reloading but careful quality assurance observation before finishing the reloading process can prevent it from ever going boom in a chamber. Not the best day at the range.
I learned that 1911 mags are not necessarily interchangeable, and that the ones I bought have something sticking up in front that keeps them from seating properly. I've put in a support ticket with Wilson Combat to ask what to do about it. I'm hoping it's just a matter of getting some different basepads. So I couldn't fire that one at all. I did have another gun with me, but it seemed as though my bad habits decided to have a field day. Specifically, a tendency to dip the muzzle during the trigger pull. I don't know why. I'll have to ask my hands. Posted by: Splunge at February 16, 2025 07:45 PM (afZ9r) 62

(Although Art probably would have been shot for his trouble trying to go for Bill's favorite gun...) Posted by: Schnorflepuppy ====== To be honest, there were less accidental shootings when double action 9-12 lb triggers on revolvers were used for lawmen. Rigid trigger and muzzle discipline and training is needed as you make the trigger lighter and lighter with no safety, etc. But, using the heavier pull weight of a typical double action revolver can lead to bad habits when using other firearms. Posted by: GWB It's not great but ok as a CLP to float big carbon chunks etc. Dexron II or III ATF is what you want as I put up thread. Dexron II or III ATF is a component of Ed's Red home made formula and does pretty good on its own. Has anticorrosive and cleaning function due to its decent penetrating oil capabilities. Yup, Whig. I try to incorporate many QC checks throughout the loading process. At least with rifles you’ll know you have a double charge immediately when the powder starts spilling out of the case.
I really worry when I do pistols like .38 Spl and .45 APC. If you goofed you could easily double or triple charge with all that space in the case. Posted by: RI Red at February 16, 2025 08:00 PM (RsjDp) 77
Krazyfornia has a new tactic. Disabled person goes to range, cannot fully use the facilities, and files complaint. ADA folks show up, written notice to bring into compliance. How much does it cost to bring a small range into compliance, you might ask? North of a million dollars. Another local range, which is huge, was closed for "non-compliance". Anyone heard of this happening in other states?

Posted by: Alberta Oil Peon ====== 1950's were some of the peak of nice firearms--you had the better steels, etc. coupled with a bunch of very experienced machine operators turning out good product up to what CNC produces today for a skilled person. Have fun with the H&R as that is a classic 22 plinker. Get yourself some plastic wall anchors (either a #8 or 9, I forget) or snap caps though for dry firing. 22 LRs have stiffer mainsprings to make sure to hit that rim hard enough to ignite and the firing pins on those 22 LRs are pretty hard and brittle if you are drying firing. A few like the High Standard Sentinel actually can be dry fired safely for some models as they have actual slots in the cylinder for the firing pin to go without hitting the chamber entrance. That is often a common problem with used 22 LRs is a burr from dry firing on the edge of the chamber in rifles, pistols, and revolvers. Posted by: GWB Ammonia is fine but you make sure to rinse the bore out with hot water afterwards or something other like Hoppes No. 9. For a long time, ammonia was THE required ingredient to remove copper fouling in products like Butch's Bore Shine and Sweet's and still works decently by itself if you use Janitorial grade ammonia strength. 76 Yup, Whig.
I should look into some of those gun socks for rifles that Hickock45 mentioned in the video. I always have a silicone rag handy and use it whenever I handle a gun. The handguns are stored in trays with dividers to keep them apart and that has worked. But the rifles are a different story. Most are second (or third or more) hand and were never pristine when I got them but I do want to keep them rust free and not add to the wear from storage. Honest wear from use is another matter. I'm especially careful about the black powder guns and that has worked for decades.

Posted by: JTB ======= I've used gunsocks for years to protect rifles and shotguns from dings, etc. in the safe or during transit. They work well and if you want to spend a bit more, I think Browning and a couple of others have gun socks impregnated with anti corrosive vapor release agents. Or you can buy some of the anti corrosive paper and stuff it in the sock to achieve the same result for a bit cheaper. VCI bags are also pretty cheap in bulk from Amazon but pay the extra freight for the zip lock sealed ones rather than fiddling with taping the end etc. Posted by: whig at February 16, 2025 08:31 PM (ctrM5) 106

Posted by: Ed L ======= To add to what Ed L is saying, the P229 is steel framed and about as heavy as your P226 while being a bit more compact. Most people shoot them at least as well as the P226 if not better. For shooting 40 S&W or 357 Sig, you want the P229 over the P226. The older single stack P225 (9mm) or the P220 (45 ACP mostly), are also nicely done but the P225, including the revised version I think, is not made anymore. The P220 though is and is on par with a tuned 1911 in accuracy. Posted by: whig at February 16, 2025 08:40 PM (ctrM5) 110

Posted by: Ed L ========== For collectibles in deep storage, I would use gunsocks inside PCI anti corrosive bags coupled with RIG grease/or Renaissance Wax on metal surfaces, chamber and bore. Rig, unlike Cosmolene, does not harden with age and is easy to remove. Some of the safes coming out of China has had issues in the past with toxic drywall in the walls of safes as a fire insulator. Basically the drywall contains a bacteria that eats some of the material in the drywall gypsum and the result is release of sulfuric acid inside the safe. FIL had a Winchester with that problem which is how I got deeply into preventing corrosion in a corrosive atmosphere. Posted by: whig at February 16, 2025 08:47 PM (ctrM5) 122

Posted by: Ed L ========= I went with Rhino. Nearly went with Liberty but an LGS was a Rhino dealer. As I mentioned above, Browning and I think at least one other namebrand make gun socks for long guns that release the anticorrosive vapor but the socks definitely help if you have a crowded safe as most of us tend to do. The ones to watch out for Chinese drywall are those you find in chain stores. If you find your weapons rusting despite using dehumidification, keeping it in air conditioning, etc, then that is the likely culprit. Chinese drywall created a really big problem for awhile about a decade or so ago in the building industry as causing corrosion in pipes, wires, etc. which resulted in that drywall being withdrawn from the American market. But it has been snuck in at times as fireproofing for safes among other things. Caveat emptor. Posted by: whig at February 16, 2025 09:00 PM (ctrM5) 149

Open Carry: The Dumbest Thing You Can Do
https://is.gd/2eBTJG *Anything hanging off your body is an Invitation for thievery, be it a phone, a knife, pocketbook, a gun, a wallet, keys, a wig if you're maxine waters... Posted by: Soothsayer Depends on what and why you are carrying it openly. A lot of store owners carry openly simply to ward off problems and I know of at least one such person who started doing it when he was robbed once at gunpoint at the register. After he started carrying openly, no such trouble. Out tramping around in the wilderness, open carry makes all kind of sense because the threat there is as much varmints as it is humans. In a crowded areas like a store, etc., not that prudent if not a cop, security guard, etc. Too many assholes will either report to the police about a man with a gun or some will even try to take it from the holster to prove they are a tough dude etc. That is leaving aside criminals attracted by it. You become an attractive nuisance which is the last thing you want to be if carrying defensively. Posted by: whig at February 16, 2025 09:07 PM (ctrM5) 168

Collin Rugg@CollinRugg NEW: Secretary of State Marco Rubio smacks down CBS News' Margaret Brennan after she bizarrely claimed the Holocaust happened because of too much free speech. Brennan verbally struggled as she tried relating JD Vance's comments on free speech to Nazis. Brennan: "[Vance] was standing in a country where free speech was weaponized to conduct a genocide..." Rubio: "I have to disagree with you. Free speech was not used to conduct a genocide." "The genocide was conducted by an authoritarian Nazi regime that happened to also be genocidal because they hated Jews... There was no free speech in Nazi Germany. There was none." - The Nazis were well known for their strong support of free speech. Posted by: Schnorflepuppy ======== They make smaller ones for handguns too. Even some for rifles with scopes and ARs specifically. The problem with leaving them inside travel cases, etc. is that those can trap moisture and may create corrosion problems. Gun socks take up less space in a safe, are breathable so they don't trap moisture (the good ones have silicone impregnation, the best ones have VCI corrosion inhibiters added to them and run about the same as a cheap gun case in price. You can also use gunsocks when transporting a firearm in a case as additional protection. But, avoid the cheap Chinese knockoffs on Amazon, amazingly cheap price but who knows what material or or whether it wicks and then releases water vapor later among other things. Range gear. I got some T posts and T post hangers and a 2x4 to make a quick solar panel rack. The T post hangers are sold as target hangers. They slip over the T post and are sheet steel bent to catch on the knobs on the T post and then a j hook for the 2x4. You can screw them down or not. For my use just resting in the hook was fine I think if you are shooting at it seems likely you would want to screw them down.

read it and the comments this morning but have nothing so much to say. I worked for a couple of years in a gun rights group at the state level and one of the issues that always created a problem with perfectionism and absolutism. In one case, it torpedoed a bill delaying progress in carry restriction removals. That cost us two years in our state.

Oh blaster,
I meant to mention that old tires can serve as a very good barrier on ranges when filled with sand. No tracer rounds of course but tires are seriously overbuilt with kevlar belts, etc. for something like a handgun or 22 LR range back barrier. A double wall of them filled with sand could probably handle some rifle cartridges as well. There is also a company that made blocks of bullet absorbing foam etc. for ranges. Something like Bullet blox or something like that. Might find that information useful, dunno. Posted by: whig at February 16, 2025 09:49 PM (ctrM5) 273

Posted by: Itinerant Alley Butcher ======== Reverse Osmosis setup. You can do it powered or unpowered (hand pump type). Works in some pretty nasty water but best if sediment can be removed first to avoid stopping up the ceramic filters used for Reverse Osmosis. Posted by: whig at February 16, 2025 09:51 PM (ctrM5) 275

Posted by: Weasel at February 16, 2025 09:15 PM (iu4Pw) Right now I would rather lose city water. If I lost power I would lose propane fueled central heat and it is 14 degrees with about 8" of snow. I have a canal behind my house that connects to Saginaw Bay/Lake Huron. I could chop a hole in the ice on the canal and use a 5 gallon bucket to get water to flush the toilet and I could boil water in my microwave. I have portable heaters that use kerosene and propane for power outages and kerosene and Colman lanterns. Thanks Weasel.
