  • Could AMD's announcement that there would be no 32GB model of the 9070 XT have been a modified limited hangout? (WCCFTech)

Alleged leaks from alleged graphics card partners are that there is indeed at 32GB model on the way, just that it may have a different model number.

  • The Khadas Mind 2s is a very expensive mini-PC. (Notebook Check)

Its 16 core Intel 255H has good single-threaded performance but is well behind AMD's 12 core Ryzen 370 on multi-threaded tests.

That's coupled with soldered RAM (bad) but 64GB of it (good), and a single M.2 2230 slot for storage (meh).

    That costs you $1599.

Then you need to buy a dock (a more reasonable $179) and probably a graphics module ($999 for and 8GB 4060 Ti, or $1099 for 16GB).

    And an M.2 2230 SSD.

It's not badly designed, as such. It would be quite interesting at one third the price.

  • Some monkey: Sri Lanka is scrambling to restore electricity after a monkey triggered three days of nationwide power cuts. (Reuters) (archive site)

Power has been partly restored but cuts continue as does the work
An outage lasting six hours on Sunday was blamed by power minister, Kumara Jayakody, on a monkey that disrupted a grid station in a Colombo suburb. No power cuts were implemented on Wednesday, which was a holiday in Sri Lanka.
    That's... Whatever.
The animal had come into contact with the transformer at the station, disrupting supply to the entire country. There were no immediate details on whether the monkey survived the incident.
Given that it shut down a gigawatt power grid, I'm guessing not.

13 The Chumbawamba Tubthumping musical interlude from yesterday or the day before that sent me down a Chumbawamba rabbit hole. They are communists and seem to be pretty fun communists. Their canon is rather extensive but one album stuck out: English Rebel Songs: 1381 - 1984. It a gem of an album and shows what great singers they are/were. Degree of difficulty: acapella.

20 Another rabbit hole I have been down lately is Australia's delightful history. For example, the wreck of the Dutch ship Batavia off the coast of Western Australia in 1629.

It shows a couple things. GPS is better than no GPS, and we are all about 30 minutes from devolving into a Lord the Flies existence. On the plus side, the first European structure, Haye's Fort, was built. Parts of it still exists along the ad-hoc graveyards.

The funny thing about Lord of the Flies is that it actually happened. A group of boys from Tonga was stranded on an abandoned island for more than a year - and they did just fine.

39 Evening and morning, Sunday toilers and early risers! The weather has changed here. From a damp high of 80 yesterday, the temp (after a rainstorm passed) has dropped to 65, and is supposed to drop further during the day.

Big black Stirling woke me up about an hour before the alarm, by nuzzling around me and then settling into the crook of my arm and milk-treading, as he did as a kitten. For a bit I managed to settle back into a dream about having to rush my (now late) cat Arizona, who needed a special diet, home from the vet early before work so he could get his Rx food. Apparently I still lived in the French Quarter, and was trying to drive down there and drop him off just before dawn. Clearly it was a dream: There was no traffic!

We went out to Marshall's last night to see if we could find a Valentine's Day gift for Miss L.; she wants a new purse. There were lots of black ones, but she wants real leather and something mid-sized, not small or huge. Note that she herself suggested Marshall's and not a big and pricey department store. Part of why I love her, you see.

We had pizza, and then watched part of Ssssss, a 1973 horror movie on Svengoolie. She is not bothered by snakes and, though she does not care for Sven's shtick, found at least a few scenes, those with the snakes themselves, to be interesting.

They won't sell at those prices, not against Nvidia's $550 5070 and $750 5070 Ti. AMD is done in graphics.

-

It's funny to think that Nvidia is massively overpriced for what they are and offer, and, instead of undercutting them by 10% and selling cards hand over fist to customers who would might be AMD curious, AMD decides to match prices for a less useful / valuable product.

They have been fantastic. The first six or so months was kind of hit or miss, but Intel rolls updates out constantly. I haven't had any problems with new games like Red Dead or Cyberpunk. I suspect you could have some hiccups if you leaned towards only playing 2000s era stuff or bleeding-edge beta testing games, but nothing I've run from GOG has given me any problems.

It transcodes like crazy, too, which is why I bought it. Turns out it can run Stable Diffusion via Automatic1111 just fine, too. You just have to direct it to the non-Nvidia card during setup.

I found that card for just over $200 factory refurbished and with a two year warranty, straight from Acer via ebay. It's been one of if not the best computer purchase I've made in a very long time.

If you could find one for really cheap I'd definitely recommend it, but I wouldn't begin to consider one for much more than $100-150 with the new Intel GPUs (Battlemage IIRC) out now. From what I've seen on reviews they're pretty incredible and achieving what AMD should've been going for re: performance vs price.

Note to Patty Murray: the way that DC bureaucrat protection labor laws are written its illegal to perform discriminating cuts and deliberate mass firings.

But he was always a loyal communist who paid off the right people so too bad, so sad, nothing to see here, no charges ever filed.

156 My suspicion is Hollywood or music biz is similar. You will make various full throated pronouncements - say, “environmentalist” green things, support of various sex perversions, icky Republicans, etc. It just comes with the territory

Crow has been caught in pictures pictured hanging out with Harvey Weinstein so she could get into movies. I assume that means she's actually walked the walk on sex perversions, so to speak.

158 142 Acshually, one does need to show a DL to purchase a new car. Or ID anyhow, a new one.

Show up with cash and try to buy one and I bet the dealer would call “homeland security”

Posted by: Common Tater at February 16, 2025 08:21 AM (V+4tn)
----
The only reason for ID (not necessarily a DL) is to secure a loan, credit check, etc. not for the actual handing over of the vehicle. I doubt there is any legislation specifying that. Rocking up to a dealer with $40,000 in cash in a suitcase would raise eyebrows as to the possible uttering of counterfeit money hence a need for action. OTOH $2000 in cash for a clunker would probably go smoothly.
Anyway I should have said Background Check and not DL when buying a car. If the dealer wants to see a DL it doesn't go further than that, no calls to FBI, State Cops, etc.

I believe Trump was quoting or paraphrasing Napoleon.

Trump left himself open to criticism with this vague statement. I'm sure he could have written something just as powerful without the same negative associations.

Did AP refer to Alaska's tallest mountain as McKinley or Denali? Is it Fort Liberty or Bragg? Can an XY person be a "woman" or is always a "man"?

Is Mexico not part of Central America?

Why is AP so bigoted and hatefilled?

When my beautiful Bonneville got totaled on hitting a deer at ahem speed ahem, wife and I drove around in our Ford van to various dealers looking for a used car. When we drove in to Dodge the salesman came out and showed us a 2000 Dodge Intrepid after I explained my requirements, got the keys and let us drive off for a test. Of course he had our van there in exchange, just in case. Never had to show anything. (I did buy that car and I still have it).
Also can always do a straw purchase: a licensed person buys the car on another's behalf and sells it down the line. No law against that.

192 I entered the car buying fray last year after having abstained for decades (long story). So I did what everybody does today to prepare and began watching videos. One tip I came across was to make some paper copies of your DL (with the birth date redacted) and give one of those to the dealer. Then they can't hold you hostage when they inevitably enter into the scripted the shenanigans phase.
