Gun Thread: Super Bowling Edition!

super bowl 2025 sm scaled.jpg

Howdy, Y'all! Welcome to the wondrously fabulous Gun Thread! As always, I want to thank all of our regulars for being here week in and week out, and also offer a bigly Gun Thread welcome to any newcomers who may be joining us tonight. Howdy and thank you for stopping by! I hope you find our wacky conversation on the subject of guns 'n shooting both enjoyable and informative. You are always welcome to lurk in the shadows of shame, but I'd like to invite you to jump into the conversation, say howdy, and tell us what kind of shooting you like to do!

Holy Halftime guys and gals!! How in the ever-loving Hell did it get to be Super Bowl Sunday? It's the LIXth Super Bowl game, by the way, and is scheduled to start at 6:30pm Eastern, although the pre-game show started approximately three weeks earlier (or so it seems).

Q: Weasel, won't you pleeeeze give us your thoughts on the game?
A: Well, if you insist.

I used to like pro football games, back in the days before the NFL went all nutty over "player safety" and insisted on requiring face masks on helmets and moving the goal posts to the back of the end zone. Still, with the likes of John Unitas and Dick Butkis and Larry Czonka the game was mostly still watchable. Unfortunately, a bunch of sissy-boys took over so instead I simply watched the Super Bowl for the clever and funny commercials. Then the retards of the left took over, becoming the self-appointed arbiters of what was funny and clever and did what they typically do by taking the fun out of everything and made the whole thing an unwatchable and woke shit-show. It was then I stopped watching altogether.

The End

Having said that, our glorious leader President Donald J. Trump, today becomes the first sitting president to attend the game so suddenly I can tolerate football again. Another Trump miracle! Anyhoo, I figure at least some of you are interested, so feel free to discuss the game tonight in the comments.

With that, step into the dojo and let's get to the gun stuff below, shall we?

10 I haven't been interested in pro football since Tom Landry retired. It was about then it started becoming the Major League Felon sport. And, about then that people really stopped having allegiance to their teams based on where they lived and, instead, on who won. Which isn't really loyalty, IMO.

12 I've never come across that weird name for Deckard's blaster, it was always called "Deckard's blaster."

Here is my writeup on it as part of the Geek Guns series where I looked at movie props vs real-world performance:

https://tinyurl.com/4cnsct9d

TL;DR version: it's a Charter Arms Bulldog in .44 Special, and that was my first EDC gun, which - liked Deckard - I kept in a cross draw holster because it was a serious piece of metal. Eventually sold it and used a Taurus 85 instead.

16 Revolvers make great prop guns, because blanks don't have to cycle the action.

Of course, you have to be wary of bore obstructions or people who keep live ammo on set.

No range report this week and you will not get one next week either as I will be down in Texas for the weekend. Going there to see a concert but my friend is persuading me to bring along my two handguns. He knows of a range there ( I am sure in Texas there are many ranges within a stones throw) for us to put freedom seeds down range.
And if I am lucky and the range is like the one I visited in Houston a few years ago, I just might try out a full auto pew pew. :-D

20 In prep for this thread I bought mags and ammo. Stopped by PSA website looking for suppressors because they said they were going to be selling suppressors and were partnering with a company to make it a one stop shop kind of deal. Does not yet appear to be a thing.

So since I was there I picked up six 27 round Magpul 27 round Glock mags (because if you bought 5 or more you get free shipping) and 120 rounds of .308.

35 I got a little shooting in this week, mostly .22 and a couple magazines of .25 through the Jetfire, just to let the little feller know I haven't forgot him. Now, I saw something that took me down memory lane. When I was a kid I used to drool over the mail order gun ads, mostly surplus, but some with really odd, sometimes very bad imports. Some though, were good. Guy at the pawn/gun shop showed me one that came in as loan collateral, a Sharps derringer replace (sometimes called Sharps Pepperbox). These were pretty cheap in the 60s, sold mostly by Navy Arms. They command pretty big bucks now due to cowboy action shooters. contd below

44 Range time this weekend consisted of test driving a couple of new purchases: a .32 ACP Walther PPK/S SD fitted with a suppressor and a SIG Sauer M11A1. The PPK/S SD fitted with a suppressor was very gassy. It would hit you with a dose of gas in the face when fired. But it's fairly quiet (given that this was an indoor range). The suppressor blocks the sights, so it's only good to about 5 yards. I shot one handed at 3 yards and was able to get five rounds into a pretty tight group.

The M11A1 is essentially the compact version of the P226. Fired in single action, it's surprisingly accurate with SIG's short reset trigger making rapid fire quite doable. It's not cheap ($1149 MSRP new). I bought mine used for $899. It does come with 15 round magazines and tritium sights as standard, though.

I will always wonder how far the Dolphins could have gone if they had Barry Sanders on the team during the Marino years.
To be able to switch between giving the ball to probably the best running back ever and Marino's passing would have been a joy to see.

Alas, something like that will only be seen in my dreams.

52 Took the 06 out for a spin on Friday. And the new plate rack. I'd just done a good scrub of the bore, so, I'm going to claim the trip was more about fouling the bore than going for acceptable accuracy.

Yeah, that's the ticket.

Seriously, though, even with the rather stiff breeze, I did manager to hit the 12, 10 and 8" plate. I thought I had the 6" but, alas, I missed. Along with the 4" and 2". Still, though, I did get in some decent practice while prone. Which I need to do if I'm going to shoot a real F class match at some point.

It might hit you in the face with the gas, but the PPK/S fitted with a suppressor looks pretty cool. It caught the eye of the people in the lanes next to mine who wanted to take a look at it. I think I'll look for a smaller suppressor too. The one I used was really big compared to the small PPK/S it was attached to. As expected, shooting cheap .32 ACP ammo made the insides of the PPK VERY dirty.

80 For those who didn't peruse the Food Thread (and you know who you are), CBD threw down the gauntlet to his minions and toadies:

So you people will have to open up a can of whoop-ass on the Gun Thread snobs and put them in their rightful place at the bottom of the famous and coveted AoSHQ 4:00pm-10:00pm Sunday Time Slot! Can you do it without the guiding hands of Dildo? Wait... what?

By the way, does anyone know where this competition came from? I suspect it was from a 9mm enthusiast, but who knows, it might even be a shaken Manhattan troglodyte!

Insults! Gun Thread snobs? 9mm in place of .355 Euroweenie enthusiast??

Still, it appears to have enflamed his minions and toadies. They have posted over 385 comments. We've had heroic 4th Quarter efforts in the last two weeks, and managed to keep Weasel in bed, not to mention keep him from the angst and emotional distress that only an Ewok explosive outburst can trigger on an 0700 hrs Zoom call.

Can we win this one for The Weasel??

Neck tension: How tightly the bullet is held by the brass on a rifle cartridge. I'm not sufficiently versed on the subject to know if some rife cartridges are crimped rather than using neck tension.

My two cents is that the QC on the Turkish firearms (of any kind) can be hit or miss. For example, you'll find tons of Turkish made clones of the Benelli M4 shotgun at gun shows and on the web. Some say that their Turkish made clones are just as good as the Italian originals. But others will complain bitterly about how their clone copy M4 has jamming and feeding problems with all sorts of ammo they feed it. And durability is a known issue. See TFB TV's test of a "Turknelli" clone of a Benelli M4. Ask yourself what you'll use the gun for. If it's just a range toy, it'll be OK. If you're going to bet your life on it when SHTF, you might want to think twice.

For practically all of the times I had to submit the background check for a security clearance, I had to provide the fingerprints. The local PD where I lived would do them for you for a fee. Before everything went electronic, I'd just ask the fingerprint tech to make up some extra fingerprint cards (which I paid for, of course). I'd be surprised if you couldn't get that done at the NYPD. If I could get fingerprint cards done by the Pennington County Sheriff's Department, I'd be shocked if the NYPD can't do them for you.

156 But as for guns!

Range trip this week was with beloved XD9 and it did not disappoint. Did a clean Dot Torture drill which isn't common. I think this is one of the best striker fired pistols out there and I do NOT get the hate and memes about it. I suspect there's a literal conspiracy against Springfield Armory. I'm not saying MAC from Military Arms Channel is behind it but....

Seriously, this gun eats EVERY ammo I've ever put in it, groups tight as any gun I own (and that's saying something) and has good ergonomics and trigger. At this point, I have around 30k rounds through the XD9 spread between two guns and I've never had a problem with it.

It's not perfect. It is a bit top-heavy ala SIG pistols and the takedown lever, nice as it is, bangs my hand sometimes during firing. But...damn good pistol.

159 136 Back decades ago we were still shooting up the abandoned quarry with WW2 German steel case 7.92. This stuff was heavily lacquered for corrosion resistance and crimp seal. After many rounds you would feel chambering getting sluggish, as a build up of laquer in the chamber would occur. Remedy was a cleaning rod section with patch jag in an electric drill. Dampen patch and a lot of scouring powder like Bon Ami or Comet. Run it for a couple minutes and it would get the junk out.

Posted by: Erik In Texas at February 09, 2025 07:30 PM (gpEfD)

Worth watching if only to understand something that was hugely important to the culture at the time. I've been going back and watching films that I was too young to understand just to see what all the grownups were talking about. I recognize a lot of the music, which helps.

Okay, I'm putting down a marker. The FBI has been sitting on Matt Weiss and the gambling side of Michigan football for well over a year. They have been saving the story for a rainy day and right now the FBI is getting trashed. In the next couple of weeks they will do their big arrest/rollout, timed to give them good ink right when Patel is sworn in.

Cheating is not just an NCAA issue. Big amounts of money changed hands, and if the FBI was willing prosecute assistants for hiring hookers, you can be damn sure trying to fix the entire playoff, caught their attention.

Why have they held back? Well, the NCAA had the lead, and they can compel testimony, as well as voluntary surrender of materials. That phase is over, so now it's just the FIBers needing a good media cycle, just like arresting sitcom stars for college fraud.

352 For that matter, Bangor Punta's ownership of Smith and Wesson caused quality to slip there during the mid 70s to the mid 80s.

K frame revolver production was particularly affected which gave Bill Ruger and his Security series a big boost. Colt was moribund at the time in competing for security and cop revolvers. The Security Series was built from the beginning for a steady diet of 357 magnums instead of the retrofitted k frame. A Security series Ruger will fit in a k frame holster so Bill did his homework.

The Security design lives on in the Redhawk line of Ruger revolvers. The Super Redhawk takes after the later mid 80s GP 100 design.

I'd wager that in the vast majority of the South you'd be hard pressed to get many 200+ yard opportunities. Trees, terrain, etc. There might be a cotton field or similar here and there, but you probably wouldn't be shooting over them but angled in.

Oh boy! Here’s my chance! My hand shot up. He points at me.

“Sir! The Code of Conduct is an executive order passed in 1955 which provides guidance to soldiers who have become captured or prisoners of war during hostilities. Much more than that, however it embodies the spirit of pride necessary to be the most effective fighting man.”

He was suitably impressed, “Outstanding!”

Buffalo (and Baltimore) were wildly better AFC teams.
Buffalo beat Baltimore.
And the refs beat Buffalo for the Chiefs...

Hard to call the fouls on Philly b/c their D is built on size AND speed. They don't touch WRs in the backend and their Dline just blows up O lines...

The Eagles D as a whole should be MVP right now...but I doubt someone makes that call. I mean, really, maybe it should be all 53 b/c all 53 are beating the KC 53.

436 Regarding hunting, local laws vary greatly. Michigan has this thing called the "rifle line," which cuts across the Lower Peninsula. North of that line, use whatever you want. South of it, one may only hunt deer with shotguns or straight-walled cartridges of at least .35 caliber.

Sightline and geography therefore are irrelevant. So before making a purchase, check with the local regs.

I decided to go in for a .44 magnum single-shot scout rifle, but of course I never see deer when I hunt for them, because they're sitting in my yard, eating the shrubs and crapping everywhere. I could drill these bastards from my front door with a .38, but no hunting within the city limits.

Posted by: Former Gun Owner A.H. Lloyd at February 09, 2025 08:56 PM (ZOv7s)

437 I know this is a really broad question, but in the East (Mid- and Lower-Atlantic states, maybe those just across the Appalachians, too) what sort of ranges are we normally talking about with deer hunting?

Do I need a "long range" gun and caliber? Is something in the 300-400 yard range adequate?

I'm looking for general advice to start with, just based on any experience.
Posted by: GWB at February 09, 2025 08:37 PM

I grew up hunting out West. Even out there, 300+ yard shots for deer were rare. And, to be honest, for most of the hunters I've known, 200 (maybe 250) yards is as far as they can reliably hit. For the area you're talking about, a good lever action will likely suffice, range-wise.

What are you hunting for, meat or trophy? If meat, a lot of calibers chew up meat. I've seen deer with both front quarters pretty much unusable. Over the years, I've gravitated more and more to .33 and .35 caliber cartridges, which seem to anchor game more reliably.

A good .308 will do everything you need, ammo is reliably available, and would give you the capability to reach out to 500 yards (with scope, and *much* more importantly, practice), if you ever wanted/needed to.

455 For whatever-reason I listened to Ministry's first album With Sympathy (1983) for the first time. (I had a roommate really REALLY into their later hardcore stuff, never heard the first one.)
Al Jourgenson famously has hated that first album, calling it an "abortion" in one interview I can recall. Although he's warming up to it, since hearing a band cover it.

My thought: an American trying to sound like Soft Cell's edgier stuff, complete with fake English accent, but less gay. Frontloaded, with the best songs on the A-side, although the B-side could have been better with proper production and editing. On the A-side, "Work For Love" could have been made listenable just by telling Al not to shout "WORK WORK WORK WORK" all the time. And "Revenge" had too many words, the music holds up on its own.
Some of the lyrics are better: "Should Have Known Better", "Here We Go", although on inferior songs.
6/10, decent effort, overall.
Oh, and Aimee Mann sings backup, lol. Before she fronted Til Tuesday. Al Jourgenson the right-on leftie doesn't give her credit.

Not a Stoopid Bowl story, but one of favorite stories from when I cared about foozball was during Jimmy J's first season with the 'Pokes where they went 1-15. Near the end of the season, someone changed one of the directional signs on 183 to read "Loop 12 Cowboys 0." I used to have the clipping from the Ft Worth Startlegram...but it's long lost now.

I saw a thread on Farcebook demanding people not opine they didn't like rap - because rap is how black people "share their stories" and therefore if you don't like it you are racist.

And...the lack of knowledge of history of people is astounding. If you were to go back to the 80s when rap was first getting popular in black communities and were to ask the average black person if THIS was singular way black people could express themselves they'd be offended...and if you then let them see that most of these stories are about pimps, hoes, and murdering competitors well...they were already offended...

It sounds like I could start with something I already have and work up rom there.

While researching for sra blaster's long range rifle - ended up getting her a Howa 1500 in an Australian Precision Chassis as it came all in one with decent glass and a bipod and a bitchin Merican Flag cerkote job - but if you are building, there are barreled actions you can get in all the different calibers and different manufacturers - Howa, Remington, etc. mated up to barrels from 18-24 inches. Then get a stock or precision chassis to your taste/budget.

On the one hand, I totally understand the "screw with us, pay with your (corporate) life" thinking but on the other hand, if the purpose of a boycott is to change a company's behavior, maybe it's counterproductive to continue the punishment once the behavior is changed. That's a reasonable point. A change in course is certainly a good start. I'm personally more interested in knowing that the people ultimately responsible for the shit ad campaigns have been sacked before would I consider forgiveness; otherwise, I'll just consider it pandering whilst the cancer remains.

I'm in the same boat as you re: Budweiser but have used Gillette products in the past. Though the tranny beer episode had more visibility, I found Gillette's "straight white men are evil" ad campaign significantly more egregious so I doubt I'll touch any of their products ever again, regardless.

635 193 MAE,
I agree Springfield XD's get little respect. One, the company/importer owner got into a fight with 2A Activists regarding some Bill Ruger-like activity where Illinois govt carved out an exception for Springfield Armory. Two, for some reason, some trainers spread the word that XD's were not reliable, Three, some folks prefer higher priced or brand names. A few dislike grip safeties.
Posted by: whig's phone at February 09, 2025 08:06 PM (ctrM5)

It really feels like a semi-organized plot.
I've never seen anyone reputable say the XD9 was not reliable.

They are inexpensive, but that's a good thing. Their magazines are slick AF.

I do get the grip safety complaint but many folks want the extra security and honestly, in 30k rounds, I've never had the gun fail because of the grip safety....or for anything else. If you hate it, duct tape is cheap.

653 The most entertaining thing about this Super Bowl is seeing the team that doesn't belong there being completely humiliated.

The announcers are completely humiliating themselves too. They keep fawning over "Patrick" - the QB sacked 6 times, with 2 INTS, and is behind 6 to 40, which maybe some sort of record. I'm not sure if they've mentioned the other team's QB's given name. Seems like they barely talk about him.

Earlier, they were fawning over the celebrities in attendence. Neglected to mention the POTUS. Clown show.
