Tuesday Overnight Open Thread - February 11, 2025 [scampydog]

Masked Doggo.JPG

Good evening, Horde. A very happy Tuesday to all of you. Felonious ONT of thieves, cads, and the law.

"We hang the petty thieves and appoint the great ones to public office." - Aesop

Correction from the ONT on February 4th. I erroneously posted that China was the largest holder of US debt. Japan.

Sisi Star - sisimuseum.JPG

Mastermind? He got caught. Points for skydiving in for the heist.

Blanchard stole the Star of Empress Sisi. Also reported that he swiped $750k from ATM's.

And there it was: in a cavernous room, in an alarmed case, behind bulletproof glass, on a weight sensitive pedestal -- a delicate but dazzling ten-pointed star of diamonds fanned around one monstrous pearl: the Koechert Diamond Pearl, better known as the Sisi Star.

Aerial approaches are a tricky business and Blanchard almost overshot the castle, slowing himself just enough by skidding along a pitched gable. Sliding down the tiles, arms and legs flailing for a grip, Blanchard managed to save himself from falling four storeys by grabbing a railing at the roof's edge. For a moment, he lay motionless. Then he took a deep breath, unhooked the chute, retrieved a rope from his pack, wrapped it around a marble column and lowered himself down the side of the building.

Societe Generale.JPG

Cash, and jewels. It was the largest bank robbery heist to that date.

Sewer Bank Heist. And a daring escape from custody.

During the hearing in the Palais de Justice in Old Nice, Spaggiari was called to the judge's chambers on the third floor, facing rue de la Prefecture, and at a moment when the judge and attorneys were distracted, he leaped out the window! He landed on the hood of a car, and then jumped on the back a waiting motorcycle driven by an accomplice, and waived to the judge and attorneys as he was whisked away.

He fled to Paris where he was hidden in the house of a bored young heiress, "Audi", who fell so in love with him that she renounced her fortune to flee to Argentina with him to live out their lives on the lam. In the ensuing years, he tried in vain to get his part of the take from his Marseillais co-conspirators, while simultaneously playing a cat-and-mouse game with the French police, often evading capture with outlandish costumes. He died of cancer in Italy in '89, with Audi by his side. None of the proceeds of the robbery were ever found.

ML Stolen.jpg

Heist that made the Mona Lisa famous?

The lone hitch in the thief's plan came when he tried to exit the stairwell into a courtyard. Finding the door locked, he placed the Mona Lisa-now wrapped in a white sheet-on the floor and tried to take apart the doorknob. He made little progress before one of the Louvre's plumbers appeared on the stairwell. Rather than apprehending him, however, the plumber took the man for a trapped co-worker and assisted him in opening the door. With a friendly thank you, the thief made his getaway. Just a few moments later, he waltzed out of the Louvre with one of the world's most valuable paintings tucked beneath his apron.

Scream Stolen Twice.JPG

The Scream, twice stolen.

Cheeky bastards.

In the 1994 theft, writes Puchko, "bandits placed a ladder up to the window of the National Gallery in Oslo, slunk inside, and made off with the other version of The Scream." They left a note saying "Thanks for the poor security," she writes.

Round up of non-masterminds.

Ninja. Naked guy. And more.

In 2010, Frank Taylor was arrested in Texas for robbing a convenience store while dressed as a ninja. Taylor had apparently walked into the store wearing a black ninja suit and wielding a sword, demanding money from the cashiers. However, the police were able to track him down and arrest him.

A. I refuse to answer that question.

Q. Did you ever stay all night with this man in Chicago?

A. I refuse to answer that question.

Q. Did you ever stay all night with this man in Miami?

A. No.

Q. And what did he do then?

A. He came home, and next morning he was dead.

Q. So when he woke up the next morning he was dead?

Courtrooms and brainiacs.

Judge Rosemarie Aquilina had us in tears when she told us about an exotic dancer who, having pleaded guilty on a drug charge, was sentenced to wearing an ankle monitor. Just a few days after sentencing, however, the woman was back in the courtroom, seeking an exception because the ankle monitor was kind of "ruining her vibe" at the strip club. In response, Judge Aquilina offered a veritable Solomon-esque solution: "Bedazzle that thing to match your outfits. Motion denied."

May need an assist from AoSHQ regular, Muldoon.

Parody and clever in the opinions.

United States v. Batson, 782 F.2d 1307 (5th Cir. 1986)

In the opening sentence of this case about the cotton set-aside program, Judge Goldberg recites:

Some farmers from Gaines had a plan.
It amounted to quite a big scam.
But the payments for cotton
began to smell rotten.
T'was a mugging of poor Uncle Sam.
The ASCS and its crew
uncovered this fraudulent stew.
After quite a few hearings,
the end is now nearing -
It awaits our judicial review.

I'm dealing with something similar.

If Trump can thwart the plans of literally single person in our psycho dickweed regime, wind this thing down to a peaceable conclusion, and avert American involvement in a Slavic pisspot kleptocracy death match, that alone would be worth it.

77 Saw this on Facebook a couple of days ago.
A team of physicists says there may be another universe running backward in time prior to the Big Bang:
Scientists, led by University of Edinburgh professor Neil Turok, have a new theory about how our universe operates. They say that another universe may have existed before the Big Bang, moving in reverse through time.
They call it the "anti-universe," and it's basically a reflection of our own with oppositional time.
The paper was accepted for publication in the journal Annals of Physics.

Now, after that, Venus quickly drops and disappears into the Sun, then whips back around after inferior solar conjunction on the morning side, and puts on the Morning Star show, hitting max brightness there in late April.

And then there's another universe that exists transcendentally, where time runs sideways.

In the perpendicular universe, time slides up and down. (See stripper with ankle monitor.)

1972, chemically enhanced college "brainstorm" session, we pondered how the big bang could eventually run out of steam and revert to the big collapse, which would end up as a singularity, and start all over again in an endless cycle.

In more sober contemplations since then, I have concluded that we don't have to go all the way to absolute entropy and back to a singularity, that we just expand and collapse to certain limits, space respiration. We're currently in the "inhale" cycle.

And time flies like a banana.

I saw the 'ticker tape' parade Dickens had for Mandela in 1990; my 21st floor office window overlooked lower Broadway.

The 'ticker tape' had a lot of bundles of holed computer paper tossed out by the ream. Huge stacks of that printer paper. They'd try to let it stream down but, you know. Anyway, Mandela was a commie prick; they like to portray him as a kindly nice old guy like the commies did with Lenin; they both suck commie balls. But black and commie is cool for some reason. Just look at black Democrats in the House.

The SD legislature passed the first state bill that would save girls from the tranny menace. She vetoed the bill after the NCAA said they would boycott the state. A few weeks later, FL and TX passed similar bills and told the NCAA to pound sand. The SD legislature re-passed the bill with some very minor changes and she signed it. Basically, she showed that the NCAA could intimidate her. That, and the dog thing.

All that said (and I was firmly on the "she can't be trusted when the chips are down" side), she is making very good use of her second chance.

Maybe not so much in Russian prison. I have a buddy who did some time with a Russian guy (here in the States). He would tell him about the many differences between Russian and American corrections.

One that I found interesting was that he said the gay shit, rape, prostitution, etc. wasn't really an issue there - because one thing the guards and inmates could see eye to eye about was relentlessly tormenting all known homosexuals so they wouldn't get out of line.

One of the things he mentioned was that his prison in Russia mostly served soup, and every inmate was issued a bowl and a spoon... So they would confiscate the gay inmates' bowls and spoons to starve them, since the guards would make them wait days for new ones.

Let's recap: I slept until 9:00 am. Got up had a blueberry muffin and coffee while watching the news and completing a couple crosswords. After I went to the store to get the fixings for a pot of green chile stew. That took me an hour or so to prepare and while it was cooking I was screwing around in the comments here. Then I ate a bowl of stew - it is was excellent.

Exhausted I took a nap. After that I have memory gap for a couple of hours, so I am thinking my second personality was up to something, probably something that will be a problem a few days from now.

To top off the day I went the store again for smoothie fixings: ice cream, milk, and black berries - it was excellent but it could have used some scotch; next time. And just like that here I am.

Yeah, it was a hard day now that I am thinking about it.

I question her judgement in including the story about shooting her dog in the book, and I find her need to wear a uniform everywhere she goes slightly annoying, but she looks good and I'll make allowances for the vanity of a beautiful woman.

Pretty tacky to hire her lover, though. If she were a Dem, we would be appalled.

309 294 My Garmin just watched determined I had a hard day.

344 The you-know-whos did a lot of sick research into breaking people, split personalities, hypnosis, drugs, everything. Research that was carried on in this country after the war.

The most effective way they reported, was multiple repeated abuse, usually rape, on children. “Trauma based conditioning”. I think that’s what is going on here. Very effective as a new form of political weaponization. With the added bonus of psychotic time-bombs that can go off at any time, going forward. For decades. It’s a win-win-win-win for the “The Worse the Better” crowd.

The one thing that has struck me, they have to make sure, somehow, that these unfortunate victims don’t ever connect the dots and perhaps focus their justifiable outrage where it belongs. Seems like that’s a tall order.

People do go crazy en masse, but only come to their senses one by one, it is said.

For example, I don’t want RFK near anything else, but as HHS he’d be great. Better than any GOPe pharmacuck.

Same with Tulsi: she’s a perennial enemy of the “interagency” and will clean stuff up there. I don’t want her anywhere else, though.

I declined an invitation to go one night....

Group of four gals went and were driving home after... the driver rolled her Datsun b210 at 70 mph on I90. Driver flew out the window and embedded pavement into her face. Was the nastiest thing I ever saw. She survived. Multiple plastic surgeries. She was never ever the same person. Completely changed personality. Awful.

Reagan changed the drinking ages to be uniform shortly thereafter. Don't know that it helped but that state line situation was a total debacle. Encouraged drinking and driving.

IMO, RFK Jr is on a mission, a mission he's been on for decades: Healthy food. And stopping Big Pharma. Can't argue with that. He's not crazy, just wants to look at things a little more closely than we currently are, like drug research, like childhood vaccine schedules and other similar health issues most Americans have no objection to being exposed. But boy did those Dem senators scream in agony when RFK mentioned all the money they take from Big Pharma. They really let their hypocrisy slip show with that bit of badly-written melodrama.

The book is pure anecdote without analysis, The first bit involved the Dutch Tulip Craze which could have been extended into the economic issues surrounding speculation, and why it was so rampant in that situation, but the writer did not care about economics, he just was telling stories about irrational behavior.
The following chapters were about witches and similar things, which I found to be boring.

by the way, rampant speculation is at the heart of events like the Mississippi bubble, the inflationary bubble in Spain under the influx of the gold and silver and Chinese goods from the exploitation of the new world colonies and the Asia trade, and of course Beanie Babies. All of these are economic stories, not irrationally high animal spirits.

That is doable. Printing a test page would do the trick.

The advantage of the ink cartridge printers is the print head is in the cartridge - get an issue - slap in a new cartridge. The downside is the cost of the ink cartridges.

Imagine a printer without consumables (other than the paper). They did exist: thermal printers. Print quality was sub-wonderful, but adequate for some uses.

Suggestion: modern thermal printers that do full color. Specially-coated paper contains millions of micro-capsules of yellow, blue, cyan, and black ink. The capsules of each ink color are tuned to strongly absorb IR light of a specific wavelength, and reflect all others. So capsules of yellow ink will heat up, and burst, and generate a yellow pixel when hit by the beam from a "yellow-tuned" IR laser, and likewise for the other inks. Make the solvent for the inks from some chemical that slowly polymerizes to a solid when exposed to UV or plain white light, thus "fixing" the print.

Huh? Quick Internet search says 971C for silver, easily attained with a propane torch. I have a roll of 65% silver solder on my desk right now that says on the label that "liquidus" (flow) temperature is 1326 F, or 719 C. Solders, of course are alloys, and they typically melt at lower temperatures than pure end-members.

I expect casting silver bullets with aluminum bullet molds might be a problem, simply in heating the molds enough to ensure the cavities are filled before the metal freezes. And molten silver might well bond to aluminum, too. You could probably sand-cast silver bullets.

My 17 x 22 photo printer uses pigmented ink. This is a mandatory requirement when producing high quality archival prints. You don't want to know how much it costs to keep it running. For my next life I have put in to come back as a street person so I don't have deal with the trauma that printer, the ink and the necessary paper have caused me over the years.

Hate to use the term, but "dead-man switch" is nearly applicable here. Someone with dementia cannot be relied upon to activate the device on their own behalf in the event of a fall or medical event. I think you would need some sort of program that would alert the alarm provider if the wearer failed to respond to a prompt signal in a reasonable time. Also perhaps a G-force sensor that send an alert if the wearer suddenly went from upright to horizontal, with a sudden stop. This is the sort of thing where an AI could be useful.

Yes, with my mom. Tried a watch type device first, because she's always worn one. It rang occasionally, and thoroughly confused her. Ditto the necklace type, and she also forgot why she had it and constantly took it off.

Your milage my vary, but if the dementia is such that the person can't connect dots any more, it might not work.

For comparison, my mom's dementia is considered mild. In a brief encounter, you might not notice it, other than she might repeat herself a lot. But she can't do her checkbook any more, can't handle taking her meds any more, occasionally confuses the TV remote with her land line phone. I don't think she can count past 3 any more, either.

Friends in a similar situation got their mom a Ring phone, or something similar, where the entire family has the app on their phones and they can all see her from different locations. She lives by herself. I have privacy concerns, but am considering it for my mom.

It's always easier on the outside looking in. But as you say, living it day to day wears you down. Most are never given a break by family or friends, either. It's mentally and physically exhausting, moreso with the latter if there is belligerance/anger present as can be the case. But it's like child-proofing your house all over again, except this time the crawling toddler is 5 foot 5 and has arms that work. My uncle had a devil of a time keeping my aunt in the house at night. She'd wander the neighborhood in her nightgown like some ghostly apparition. He was worn out just trying to keep her safe, forget the rest of the stuff like feeding and changing and washing and . . . .

522 One wonders how the State Nazis would be able to ascertain how many miles you drive. Old cars with speedometer cables you can disconnect would become much more desirable.
Posted by: Alberta Oil Peon

I know Wa St. This crap has been in the works for years, my best guess is the legislation will require as part of the annual licensing process one to buy and pay to have installed a GPS enabled transponder that tracks your mileage. And you can bet annual inspections will be mandatory to boot. The state has been running trials on this for years - they must feel they have it nailed down cold. This is awful. The goal is to drive you out of your car.

She isn't as bad as I'm probably making it sound, but she probably shouldn't be alone for very long. We live next door, well at the moment our house is rented out, because we were taking a year or 2 to travel the country in an RV, but once we got her away from familiar surroundings, it became obvious how bad she actually was, and we came back.

539 New Mexico Democrats want more kids exposed to fentanyl

This is classic Santa Fe Communist insanity. The state has the legal system so screwed up that DAs can barely keep violent offender is a jail pending trial. Everybody else is released back to the street. The reason fentanyl enhancement is because of some minor corner case that is so unlikely it would never happen: Meanwhile 65% of drug deaths in the state are caused by fentanyl and with the state ranked number in total drug related deaths. Here Las Cruces you see drug addicts stoned to the max all the time. A semi regular occurrence is them wandering into traffic at night and getting killed. It is madness. The crime businesses have to endure is off the charts and the city, the DAs, and the courts all point the finger at each and go, "not our problem."

Elon discussed this today. The reason only 10K can be processed per month is because that is the maximum number of retirements the mine elevator can handle per month. If the elevator has issues, well, your retirement just got delayed. This has been going on since the mid 50s and not once has anybody in government tire to modernize the system. Fire them all and start over.

I'm fighting putting her in a home, because who wants to be the asshole that puts their mom in a nursing home. But she left home at 14 to work for room and board at a nursing home, became one of the first nurse practioners in the country and was director of nursing at a nursing home for many years in Missouri, not far from here. She has no fear of them and I think she would enjoy the company. We're very isolated here, and my aunt, who was her neighbor on the other side, died unexpectedly last June,so she has no ther contact but us.

And it's not just about Jews or Israelis.

But it's 99.9% about Muslims in medical practice.

Happens here in Israel, too. That is, when they get caught.

On the other hand, a few years ago I was hospitalized and received very good care from the Arab doctors and nurses who attended to me.

But I'd rather be safe than sorry. Islam is simply poison.

Your Mom sounds like a terrific person! She deserves the Best Of Care, yes? And if she's a "people person" she'll definitely enjoy the extra company.

God bless you and your Mom. And Thor!

It's a tough decision. I cried for a couple days after placing hubby, but I know he's safer there than here. He would've broken a hip *anyway* methinks, given how he would wander at night and get into stuff.

I'd hidden car & shop keys, taken knobs off the range, locked-out the oven controls, yadda yadda...

You can't always save them from themselves, I've found.
