Trump Preparing to Dismantle the Department of Education?
So says the WSJ. They report that Trump's team is discussing an EO to end all functions of the Department of Education except those encoded into law. That is, a lot of functions of the DoE "evolved" without express Congressional authorization, and the EO would aim to end all of those currently-tolderated-but-unauthorized functions, leaving only the parts of the DoE that Trump can't end via EO.

IF they just followed what had worked for the past century it wouldn't be a problem- teaching isn't that hard.

This isn't true at all.
What's happening is that Trump is acting like he's chief executive of the Executive branch of the federal government.
Democrats (and Republicans) were able to act like this to create new functions and regulations at a whim. They've been doing it for decades.
This is just the one time since probably Andrew Jackson that a chief executive has chosen to lessen the power of the federal government on balance.

I can’t tell you how huge this is. The growth of our federal government into an unresponsive behemoth relied on a lack of transparency, accountability, oversight and management. Congress would just allocate money in huge amounts without any idea where that money went. They never bothered to really take agencies to task or pass audits with this type of detail.
Meanwhile Musk and a bunch of twenty something talents, really patriots are doing the job for them.
You can blame the agencies themselves and you should. But in the end it is Congress who let this happen and it won’t last unless they get off their lilly white corrupt lazy asses and make sure they watch where the money goes. And that doesn’t mean their favorite causes they write into each bill.

A town near mine had a big budget fight over the school budget. The state had been giving "emergency COVID funds" which the town had used to hire a bunch of school bureaucrats.
When the "emergency" funds ended though they still had to pay these people. So they asked for a massive increase in taxes to pay for the shortfall. I remember someone posted a graph showing the number of students had declined by 30% over the last 10 years yet the budget for schools had doubled.
And the response from the left to that one? Well its inflation! Then they remembered they weren't supposed to admit inflation was a problem so they stumbled onto...of course things are more expensive now...uh...because of COVID!

What's happening is that Trump is acting like he's chief executive of the Executive branch of the federal government.
Democrats (and Republicans) were able to act like this to create new functions and regulations at a whim. They've been doing it for decades.

They average teacher salary is $70K/year, pretty much the same as median *household* income for families of non-teachers.
Gotta hand it to them, that was very clever to constantly poor mouth like that while raking in more than two-person households AND only working 9 or 10 months out of the year.

the average is brought up blue state cities with powerful teacher unions -- if you look at the average by state it paints a different picture. Yes cost of living and all that but some states are very low. Teachers in Missouri start at about $30k a year.

Most people working in the private sector don't have delineated sick and vacation days, they get PTO days they can use however they want, they don't get to bank them, they have to use them within a specified period and they can only carry over a limited number to the next PTO period and have to utilize them before the next PTO period.
I was listening to Mike Slater and he had a government worker call in who said he would probably take the buyout offer but needed to know if they would pay him out his sick/vacation ban he had accrued from working the government for 25 years, he said he had over $75k dollars in his bank.
That sh*t would not fly in the private sector.

most districts pay scales include raises around $300-$600 a year, so it takes awhile to get to $52k. A teacher with 10 years experience in most districts will make mid $40s, abit more than $20 an hour.. The average is pulled up by teachers who teach 20+ years. Admins are the ones getting high salaries.
Local incentives do not add up to much. Usually a few hundred a year.
I get this is a teacher hate thread, and fine, but I roll my eyes at the posts every time that act like teachers nationwide are getting paid like the grifters in large blue cities.

It ain't the teachers whose salaries are exploding--it is the full time 365 day admin and support staff. Simply put, more educational spending goes to admin and support staff in personnel salaries and bennies, than the actual teaching staff. The figures are worse in higher ed because of the coolie adjunct and t/a low wages. Tenured teaching staff levels has been dropping for decades.
Many researchers at universities are dependent now on grants to keep their jobs because somewhere between 33-50 percent of those are raked off by institutions for slush funds and admin hires.
Admin and support staff costs and student expectations of resort living are what is driving the massive increase in higher ed spending, not teaching staff so much because of using coolie labor (adjuncts make anywhere from 3-5k per class with no benefits for example). T/A's make even less when you consider other duties.
Then you also have research coolies where post docs and research assistants work for peanuts while the head cheese/moneymaker/grant recipients live very nicely

Oh please. The scale is relative to cost of living. Teachers in bumfuck get paid an exorbitant amount relative to their cost of living or a similar job. No different than in LA or Seattle.
Teacher making $120k in Seattle but where a home costs $1M is paid the same relatively speaking as a teacher in bumfuck making $45k 60k but where a house is $300k.
They’re both paid to do nothing all day, retire at 50 and take summers off.

Re student loans, how about instead of making more and more money available for grants and loans, we make college cheaper? Tuition free if possible? Make it so cheap a kid with a part time job can easily afford it. And make admissions strictly merit based.
