Top Story

  • AI systems with unacceptable risk are now banned in the EU. (Tech Crunch)

    What risk, we ask.

The EU actually answers that, sort of.

"Unacceptable risk" AI is Class 4, and Class 3, which is not banned but regulated, includes AI systems for recommending medical treatment. Fair enough; medical anything tends to be regulated, and there's no reason not to subject medical AI to standards and tests.

Under Class 4, banned outright, we see:

    * AI used for social scoring, where the social scores are applied outside the context in which they are calculated - e.g. firing someone because of their Reddit posts
    * Inferring a person's likelihood to commit a crime unless you are the police and already have the criminal banged up because you think they done it
    * Subliminal advertising, which doesn't work anyway
    * Something so broad that it encompasses all advertising, which will be interesting
    * Anything that can infer someone's emotional state
    * Biometric analysis except when the government really wants to

So yes, commies gonna commie, and the legislation has enough holes to drive the Bagger-288 through.

Companies - anyone operating however tangentially in Europe - are expected to be in full compliance by, uh, yesterday.

17 F60 is an conveyor bridge used in brown coal opencast mining in the Lusatian coalfields in Germany. It is largest movable technical industrial machine in the world. It is described as the lying Eiffel Tower, making these behemoths not only the longest vehicle ever made—beating Prelude FLNG, the longest ship—but the largest vehicle by physical dimensions ever made by humankind. In operating condition, it weighs 13,600 metric tons making the F60 also one of the heaviest land vehicles ever made, beaten only by Bagger 293, which is a giant bucket-wheel excavator.

Thanks Pixy, for sending me down this rabbit hole.

29 CNBC: Dow futures drop more than 650 points after Trump hits U.S. trading partners with tariffs.

Oops.

Actually that's not that big of drop considering the fundamental changes to the global economy these tariffs are going to cause. The real action is when Trump clobbers Europe with tariffs in excess of 10%. The same can be said for China which is currently subject to a 10% tariff.

US automobile prices are going to be most interesting to watch. Toyota, for example, builds most of their RAV4s, one of the world's most popular cars, in Canada.

Oops.

Meanwhile, the LA Communists are requiring homeowners to get a permit to go look at their property that burned to the ground. The red tape these Communists going impose to actually get started on rebuilding Is most likely going to be epic.

38 @29/Alteria Pilgram: "The red tape these Communists going impose to actually get started on rebuilding Is most likely going to be epic."

Current property tax values are only protected within a two year window, after which there's a re-assessment at current market values which results in increased revenue to the state.

Thus, expect red tape to delay rebuilding efforts by two years and a few months.

If you combined the economies of Canada and Mexico, how close to even equaling the economy of the United States would they come?

46 Refresh my memory. What products do Canada and Mexico produce that the United States absolutely can't survive without?

I think we get about 10% of our oil from Canada which is not trivial. A 10% tariff on that is going to show up pretty fast. On the other hand, it should provide plenty of incentive to start poking holes here in the USA to avoid that which is sort of the point of the tariff in the first place.

Between that and Valentine's Day, the checking account gets beaten.

With regards to the tariffs, my annoyance is this: One of the main reasons behind it is Canada and Mexico not securing their border and allowing people and drugs to get to our country. Perhaps they could focus on that problem instead.

49 "I think we get about 10% of our oil from Canada which is not trivial."

We have more than enough oil here in the United states. It will be coming up out of the ground very soon. We will be energy independent again with no need of that Canadian oil.

What won't change is the need for that Canadian oil to be refined. Which is going to cost Canada and not the U.S.

My minimum standard for a new laptop these days is a 13.8 screen, 16GB of RAM, and 512 GB SSD. And just like that you spent $1,300 If you stick with Apple.

As a comparison point, the current Microsoft Surface laptop with the Snapdragon plus CPU with the same specs runs $1080. This is directly comparable to the MacBook Air.

Or you could go with a Dell Inspiron for about half the price as CBD noted earlier.

Getting ANWR oil to market is the big challenge. It does look like the Purdhoe pipeline could be tapped into which could cut down on the lead time. What is certain is sitting around doing nothing is not an option as that delays getting a necessary resource into the economy and gives the Left future opportunities to shut it down again.

79 @46/Alteria Pilgram: "Refresh my memory. What products do Canada and Mexico produce that the United States absolutely can't survive without?"

I don't know what, specifically, you can do without. Our markets are pretty tightly tied.

From the "USMCA Trade & Investment Summary" section:
https://tinyurl.com/dx3edrb6

"U.S. goods and services trade with USMCA totaled an estimated $1.8 trillion in 2022. Exports were $789.7 billion; imports were $974.3 billion. The U.S. goods and services trade deficit with USMCA was $184.6 billion in 2022."

That's a LOT of trade to disrupt suddenly. Remember when governments suddenly interfered in the markets by shutting down business and forcing everyone home and printing free money that wasn't backed by actual wealth generation, and what that did to our prices now?

Disrupting the free market flow comes at a price, and at one's peril.

We're all about to find out what we can do without... Find out as the latter part of "FAFO".

82 A lot of otherwise intelligent people ran their mouths off about DeepSeek only spending $6 million to train R1 to such an extent that it caused a crash on the stock market with Nvidia leading the pack on losses.

I thought it was an overreaction to another Chinese exercise in BS PR, which it turned out to be.

When will people learn that you must take everything coming out of China with a gigantic grain of salt?

If OpenAI is correct about the situation DeepSeek basically copied their model, “distilled” it, deployed their CCP-controlled App version, and then released open source versions for anybody with capable hardware to use it.

Has this not been China’s entire industrial strategy for the past 30 years summed up in a nutshell?
Spy, Cheat, Copy, Lie, Sell. Repeat.

The only difference this time is the Open Source part, but they only did that to gain praise as it was “China’s Gift to Humanity” and screw OpenAI over in the process.

If only they’d had this gift in 2019 maybe their AI could’ve told them how to keep deadly synthetic novel viruses in the lab?

Good idea. We could just fully automate the lab, put it in control of an AI system, and sit back and enjoy the 'lab leaks', I mean, 'products'.

I will never understand why society doesn't hold social media companies accountable for this. It's a terrible idea to automatically scrub dead people's reputations. And on top of that, we taxpayers probably paid for it in this instance.

The most charitable reading of scrubbing her SM is simply to maintain her in a sympathetic light, a more sinister reading is they want to hide the fact that she had no business flying that bird.

104 To follow up on my post at 89, I think urgent care providers are different. You're generally not going to get labs drawn there (except limited point of care testing for flu, etc.), and the good ones have to be skilled at coming to a gestalt on whether the patient looks "sick enough" to send to the ER.

There are a number of training indicators in the helo pipeline. These are unmentioned. If she was a great pilot, there would be signs. In my experience, good helo pilots are not shy, and the truth would be out there.

Bottom line, this was a team failure, where one key indicator, altitude, was not read correctly and action taken as they were too high.

I think the suspicion was that, due to the timing, it would not have been possible to have done all of the required training. Hard to say, early information is often wrong, and all of that confusion.

108 is there any reason why a woman who passed all the required training and tests with high scores and did well couldn't be a helicopter pilot?

Nope. But when you lower standards because you have a need to show that women can do the same job, that's a problem.

I use my mother as an example. Before becoming a nurse, she started life as an EMT and a Paramedic. She had to meet the same physical qualifications as the men and kept up with her education despite color blindness and dyslexia.

(Side note: I'm not making any comment about the pilot in question or the crash. I'm staying the hell out of this discussion until the facts come out.)
