Panama Caves; Will Stop Ceding Canal Privilges and Authorities to China

Panama's president vowed Sunday to end a key development deal with China after meeting with Secretary of State Marco Rubio and after complaints from President Donald Trump that the Latin American country had ceded control over its critical shipping canal to Beijing.José Raúl Mulino, Panama's president, said his nation's sovereignty over the 51-mile waterway, which connects the Pacific Ocean and the Caribbean Sea, will remain unchanged. But he said he would not renew a 2017 memorandum of understanding to join China's Belt and Road global development initiative and that Panama would instead look to work more closely with the U.S.
"I think this visit opens the door to build new relations ... and try to increase as much as possible U.S. investments in Panama," Mulino told reporters after meeting with Rubio on his first international trip since being confirmed.
Rubio, who was a senator representing Florida before Trump tapped him to be America's top diplomat, said his team is ready to push the U.S. agenda.
"Had the pleasure of meeting the incredible @USEmbPAN team during my first embassy meet and greet in my new role as Secretary of State!" Rubio wrote in a post on X. "Thankful for their dedication and ongoing efforts to promoting President Trump's vision of an America First foreign policy."
During his visit, Rubio wrote in a post on X that "the United States cannot, and will not, allow the Chinese Communist Party to continue with its effective and growing control over the Panama Canal area."

President Donald Trump defended his recent tariffs against Canada, Mexico and China while speaking to reporters at Joint Base Andrews on Sunday night -- and hinted that the European Union may suffer a similar fate.The tariffs, which were authorized in an executive order on Saturday, will go into effect Tuesday. Under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA), a 25% additional tariff will be levied on imports from Canada and Mexico, and a 10% tariff on imports from China.
In the executive order, Trump said that the tariffs stem from an "extraordinary threat posed by illegal aliens and drugs, including deadly fentanyl, [that] constitutes a national emergency."
The tariffs have invited international criticism from leaders and citizens alike in Canada and Mexico. During his exchange with reporters on Sunday evening, Trump accused Canada of being "abusive" toward the U.S. in terms of trade.
"Canada has been very abusive of the United States for many years. They don't allow our banks," Trump claimed. "And you know that Canada does not allow banks to go in, if you think about it. That's pretty amazing. If we have a U.S. bank, they don't allow them to go in."
"Canada has been very tough for oil on energy. They don't allow our farm products in, essentially. They don't allow a lot of things in. And we allow everything to come in as being a one-way street."
Trump also claimed that the U.S. subsidizes Canada "by the tune of about $200 billion a year."
"And for what? What do we get out of it? We don't get anything out of it," he added. "I love the people of Canada. I disagree with the leadership of Canada and something is going to happen there."
The Republican leader also said that he will "definitely" impose tariffs against the European Union, which he said the U.S. has a $300 billion trade deficit with.
"They don't take our cars, they don't take our farm products, they take almost nothing," Trump said. "And we take everything from them. Millions of cars, tremendous amounts of food and farm products. So the UK is way out of line and we'll see the UK, but the European Union is really out of line."

We have literally never had a debate on the arch-libertarian theory that unfair trade somehow benefits us, and the people certainly never agreed in any election to this theory, but the Regime likes it because they do in fact get rich off trade (and bribes), and that's that. They don't have to seek the consent of the governed, they'll just steamroll over the governed as they've always done.
If unfair trade practices directed at America by foreign countries is actually good for America, doesn't that also mean that American tariffs slapped on foreign countries will likewise be good for their economies, too?

I think this is a lot of what is going on in the Western world.
What the people haven't fully caught on to yet is that the biggest asset and negotiating power BY FAR that the powers that be have access to is the US treasury and US policies.
How much money do we think our "leaders" have made (as individuals) on selling access to US markets around the world? Or, on the other side of the grift, how much have they made using US dollars to buy influence around the world? We're being sold out constantly by our politicians / business leaders / Deep State / etc so that they can personally profit.

You are giving too much credit here TBH. When I've explored what the left means when it says the tariffs will be inflationary is just that prices will go up. No, they don't know that isn't inflation. And hilariously if you point out putting a tariff on something which then raises its cost is the same as putting a direct tax on that same product and that raising its cost they don't get it.

Back around 2004, Greenspan testified to congress that he had found a flaw in his theory. I don't recall specifics, but Greenspan had long said that trade imbalances didn't matter, it was still in our benefit to trade.
I think that was a big part of his flaw.

While Canada is geographically a large country, the population is like 10% of the US's, and it's cold as balls throughout the vast majority of the country. So much so that nearly the entire country lives within an hour or two of the US border.
Their major exports are natural resources.
Yes, if they stopped exporting trees, oil and "green" hydro electricity to the US, it would cause some disruptions.
But on the flip side of that -- NAFTA really fucked up our own domestic tree harvesting industries, the electricity we get from Canada is because of govt green mandates, and we have plenty of oil. So it may be beneficial for us in the long run to stop exporting money to Canada at the cost of our domestic industries.

Yes. The CA machine is doing everything it can to steal seats. We know this. It has a limited life with the 2030 census and (please, God, please) a sudden reapportionment of the 2020 census.
But...CA isn't everywhere.
TX Democrats losing funding means a lost seat here or there. Same with FL Democrats. And NC Democrats.
We can't hope for more than a 5-10 seat majority until the census gets fixed, but that's not a problem that's going to get overall harder with massive money issues happening on the left, along with a federal DOJ focused on election integrity issues.

Trump sort of fixed some of this with his re-do of NAFTA, but for many years (due to canadian subsidies), it was cheaper to chop drown trees in Maine, send them to Canada to be processed, then ship the paper and/or lumber back to the US to be sold.
That annihilated the New England logging industry. Similar things happened out West, too.
The subsidies are now gone (I think), but the industry hasn't really bounced back as of yet. I think it's possible to fix that, especially if there are tariffs on Canadian lumber.

1- Even if they don't do much, it's still a significant expense for Mexico. The poster said it cost virtually nothing...when last week they said it was ridiculously expensive for the US to move 1500 troops to the border.
2- During Trump's last term, "Remain in Mexico", supported by Mexican troops, was very successful in reducing illegal immigrants numbers.
3- as this DUer says: Trump only cares about optics. The optics he can play was that he got concessions. And that's what he'll do. He'll say he leveraged a deal to protect our border.
This isn't going to play out that Trump folded. He's still dangling the tariffs. He got concessions from Mexico, even if they are trivial, and that's how it's going to be presented.

Allegedly, there are still some pine trees deep in the white mountains that still exist and were marked by royal british tree people with an arrow. Those were the king's trees, and they were to be used for making masts for the navy. I have a hard time believing that, but I guess it's possible some of the pine trees are still around from the 1700's.

It just hit me. What DOGE is finding with USAID is a YUGE example of "the bezzle", a term coined by Galbraith.
The Bezzle is all the grift and corruption that goes on a system, say a corporation. Imagine the stuff like padding the expense accounts, stealing office supplies, etc etc. In good time when the money is rolling in, the Bezzle gets going and nobody pays attention or really cares. They're getting ripped off, but the money is rolling in and they don't really notice.
Now, come the downturn, the hard times, the Bezzle gets discovered, they start zealously tracking down all the grift going on.

Fentanyl deaths are hard to track because in many cases its mixed with other drugs when there's a fatal OD. So if you want to lower the number of fentanyl deaths, you could exclude those many cases where fentanyl might not have been the sole drug of death.
Plus, even if fentanyl isn't actually killing as many people as Trump claims, it's a devastating drug that causes pain and misery wherever it's found. The government also spends a fortune trying to keep addicts from ODing on it.

I'm rewatching The Chosen, and there's the Jewish architect who said his life goal was to design a synagogue where you looked at it, and walked around in it, and felt like you were hearing God speak to you, or saw the face of God.
Especially in a time when the majority of people couldn't read, and went to church for illumination, I feel that importance. And I've been in some of amazing religious buildings, and loved the feeling I had of seeing the beauty of God manifest on Earth.
Beautiful buildings are one thing. But the personal excesses that modern religious leaders, of any religion, are doing? It's gross, and I'm sure God finds it an abomination.

I dunno. This is basically what Trump did his first term -- Mexican troops at the border and remain-in-Mexico -- and it was very successful. It bears mentioning that Mexico initially told Trump to fuck off when he proposed this. They only agreed after he threatened tariffs. Mexico certainly isn't acting like sending the troops is nothing and will have no effect.

Operation Plowshare, pushed by the US in the 1950's, would have dug a sea level canal across Nicaragua in a single afternoon with about 50 buried nukes. Plan fell apart when it was difficult to get Nicaragua agree to allowing their country to be nuked by the US. (but it would have worked)

It would be ridiculously easy from an engineering standpoint. The "mountain range" between the lake and the Pacific is a range of low hills. Maybe 20 miles of digging down a couple hundred feet. And if you processed all the waste rock from that dig through sluice boxes, I'll bet you could recover enough gold to make it worthwhile doing.
