Sunday Overnight Open Thread - February 2, 2025 [Doof]

doof-ghdtrump.jpg

Beyond a SHADOW of a doubt!

Howdy Hordelings, and a happy Sunday evening to you all! Here we are in Feb-you-air-ee. That's right, the first "r" in February should always remain silent. Today is Groundhog Day, in case anyone wasn't aware. No word on how much ground was hogged in Punxsutawney. Anyway, thanks for stopping by tonight's ONT!

New DNC Chair and Vice-Chair Chosen

Minnesota state party chair Ken Martin was elected on Saturday to serve as the next chairman of the Democratic National Committee (DNC)

"Every single candidate running to chair the Democratic National Committee (DNC) blamed former Vice President Kamala Harris’s loss to President Donald Trump on"...

Go ahead, take a guess. Bet you'll NEVER get it

The committee’s final chair candidate forum, hosted by MSNBC at Washington, DC’s Georgetown University on Thursday, featured former presidential candidate Marianne Williamson, former Maryland Gov. Martin O’Malley, DNC Vice Chair Ken Martin, Wisconsin Democrat party Chair Ben Wikler, former Bernie Sanders campaign manager Faiz Shakir, former Department of Homeland Security (DHS) official Nate Snyder, and Newton, Massachusetts Democratic City Committee executive member Jason Paul.

When MSNBC host Jonathan Capehart asked who “believes that racism and misogyny played a role in Vice President Harris’s defeat,” every candidate quickly raised their hand

***

Social media users pointed out that the consensus meant that Democrats “didn’t learn anything” from their November 2024 loss

***

While DNC leaders continue to push the narrative that American voters chose Trump over Harris due to sexism and racism, 40 percent of women under 30-years-old went for the Republican candidate, and ethnic minority groups made record shifts to the right.

Gun control activist David Hogg was elected to the position of vice chair.

Yes - this guy

Well done, DNC! Looks like the Democrats may never lose a national election ever again.

I posted quite a bit last week about Hogg running for this spot, and we all had a good laugh at the absurdity of it.

I didn't think they'd be dumb/crazy enough to do it! I'm sure he'll really help with their outreach to the young male "bro" vote lol.

In the 90s, when I was traveling here and there, when I stayed overnight in a motel, they'd have cable of course. I'd leave it on a weather channel just for the chill music. The motels usually would have something like 'weather on the 8s' but it was 24 hours. Not sure if it was affiliated with the weather channel or something special for hotel/motels but I dug the music. 86 Farcebook gave some reels from a young female comedian and it was funny and different. For example she had a party for "the sciences" where she played each one and when it gets to her as astronomy she freaked out when saw astrology had showed up "WHO INVITED HER!?!" but while chemistry is consoling physics and telling her it will be ok alchemy shows up as well making chemistry's head explode...

So I went to look at more of her content and it was a mixed bag. She had "she/they" pronouns listed but...the next video was her riffing on big pharma for not wanting to heal people instead wanting profits. And it wasn't funny honestly, but here's the thing, the party that supposedly represents people like her is trying to torpedo RFK for agreeing with her/them. Its...an odd moment politically isn't it?

98 I once managed to have a dodgeball match where on the opposing side were the football team's QB AND the basketball team's point guard.

It was a massacre and perhaps the worst part of it was that I was the last man standing on my side. I managed to dodge for quite a while until I ran into the divider separating the gym into two halves one for boys and one for girls at fall speed with my attention completely focused on the game and not the wall...

99 84 Evenin'.

Put me right to sleep.

102 @FlaDems 🎉Congratulations to our new DNC Vice Chair, David Hogg—a fellow Floridian and the first member of Gen Z to hold this role. His passion and perspective will help energize young voters and shape the future of the Democratic Party.

EXCELLENT! Now let's hear some noise against fascism from the Democratic Party! He's SO much more mature than any other 20-something I know. And always has been wise way beyond his years. He's got a great future and we're lucky he's with us.

David Hogg's DNC/gun control strategy will win exactly one county in Florida and no battleground states. Hogg is not an asset to make Gen Z'ers vote for a younger set of DNC candidates.

You may be right. Leadership didn't learn from the disaster last November. I've seen him call for de-funding the police, eliminating immigration enforcement, and calling the NRA a terrorist organization. While many may agree with him, those people are already solid Democratic voters. These sort of positions are among the reasons we lost the election. As much as I like him, he is the wrong person for this job.

138 86 Farcebook gave some reels from a young female comedian and it was funny and different.

176 Around the pool, in the summer, we used a dodge ball for ball tag, partly-deflated so you could grab with one hand. My nine-years-older brother (RIP) was a crack shot from all the way across the pool. My other brother (also RIP) also had good aim. A wet, partly-deflated rubber ball, at supersonic velocity on bare skin - quite a sound, and sting. Very memorable, six decades later.

It's going to be beautiful. He struck so fast, so hard, and in so many directions, the opposition was off balance. They're slowly regaining they're footing and putting up some token resistance slowing things down, but many loyal foot soldiers of the Establishment have been cut down when trying their usual non-compliance, underming strategy.

In my universe, many people in other countries breathed a sigh of relief when Trump won, but in their alternate universe, those people were really looking forward to a Kamala administration.

I don't view Trump's first term as a failure. It was the opening battle in the war to take back the country.

Trump didn't really know DC in 2016 and they laid a trap for him and his team a year before he even took office. Half of his own party was fighting for the other side. It's a miracle he even survived 4 years and accomplished what he did.

He's had 4 years to plan when he wasn't dealing with lawfare against him, his family and supporters or dodging assassination attempts. And now he knows the game and the players. The fact that he is going after USAID right out of the gate means he knows.

Gonna be a lot of fun.

254 There was a fairly sizable demonstration across the street from me this afternoon. Lots of mezzicans and loud cars and screaming women and flags, not American flags.

If they want to be here so badly, why do they fly the flag of the country they left?

I so wanted to walk out there with an AR slung over my shoulder and my MAGA hat on.

255 With all the fires and devastation, one would think the people of LA would have other priorities.

But go ahead and protest while other people are sifting through the burnt wreckage that used to be their houses and their lives.

And all I can see is that scene of those eco-protestors blocking the road that would mean salvation as the tsunami bears down in the book Lucifer's Hammer.

258 While it's certainly a good thing, I never thought I'd see the day when I'd be relieved to have "only" a one trillion dollar deficit.
Posted by: Archimedes
========
As part of GDP, that would take the US from 6.5 percent deficit to 3.25 percent. That is on par with the first term of Trump from 2016-2018. Also removes a LOT of inflationary pressures allowing a decline in interest rates which accelerates cutting government spending.

The rest will be tougher and more incremental but each step makes it easier to reduce debt further, lowers inflation, and creates a virtuous budget cycle. Get the deficit below the growth in the GDP and it will decline further which is the real key. We ain't gonna be paying off the existing debt in any case but we can create a society where that debt matters less if we grow the economy faster than the debt rises.

263 Or you can just point and laugh. And revel in their internal discord and circular firing squad. Poor a glass of brandy, give a toast of "confusion to our enemies", and read a little DU.

The inflation thing is one of those amazing individual items that really shows the insanity of the left. I've posted it here a few times that the left, and often individual members of the left, claimed all three of these things were true at the same time:

1) There is no inflation, its a right wing racist myth
2) Of course there is inflation and its Trump's fault
3) Of course there is inflation, it is a sign Biden has the economy recovering. You should be thanking him.

So how did they get to this point? Well the narrative said that massive federal "investments" wouldn't cause inflation...so they couldn't engage with reality without dumping the narrative. And they would much rather dump reality then their narrative.

The ace athlete on the other side caught the ball and smashed him so hard in the legs he spun in the air. Everyone just died laughing for an hour.

Academia is the feeding system for the Deep State and it has been getting dumber and dumber since the 1980's. Arguably, mass general education and college was at its peak in the 1960's and has declined since then.

One can argue for superior literacy and reading ability during the 1800's which was true for the learned classes, but uneven for the rest of society.

342 During the Obama years the Democrats moved away from the notion that you had to appeal to moderates to win elections - all you had to do was pay off the right groups and enough ballots would show up - and Harris tripled down on this.

While I think Trump ran a strong campaign...imagine if Harris had come out against tranny surgery for kids, limited but real border enforcement, and some modest but real spending cuts...

While it was known for some time, 2024 showed how the Dems are the party of the rich and the elite, not the little guy. 2 plus million to Oprah? 10 million to Beyonce (who didn't even sing for her supper)? Homos For Kamala? A total flip politics-wise. The Dems threw out Trump, Gabbard, RFK, Jr., Musk, Rogan, et.al. Now the Dems have what? David Hogg? Alas, it could not endure the stresses of this journey. It came apart like the Challenger on one of the other kid's ride down. Parts flew in all directions. We reassembled it (without fixing it) on the spot we borrowed it from. There was a thorough investigation. We were not exonerated.

How about from me Emmie, I agree with Jack Straw's take. Essentially a lot of federal money has ended up being routed through Soros via overseas spending by Uncle Sam.

Since money is fungible, a dollar for Open Society in Hungary from the US treasury means that the Open Society Soros crowd can spend one dollar here on prosecutor races. Ditto for illegal foreign money in US elections which is what Share Blue and other crowdsourcing grants have been doing.

The real killer for the kindergarten set was at Paul Bunyan Land, in Brainerd, MN. One of the kiddie rides there was a self-powered train car. Sort of a bicycle-pedal set-up linked to the train wheels, but you cranked it with your little kindergartener arms, not your legs. Brutal. I hated that thing by the time I was half way around the track, but I think my parents were happy to have me all tired out for the drive home.

My guess is he has the goods on a lot of current politicians in Congress and states because he is friends with the Deep State and intel operations.

From his profile and early past history including his seemingly miraculous exit visa post 1956 unrest to attend the LSE in London, it is entirely possible that Soros was a Eastern bloc agent sent to the West in order to become a deep cover agent of influence. Or he could have had Western Intel links. But, definitely some connections to intel operations even as a youth.

Posted by: Emmie

Emmie, FWIW, I am a retired academic and often had this problem when conducting research on difficult topics. Basically you have to do something like the Russians did to become informed in the later days of the Soviet Union. Pick a source--mebbe the NYT (leave tv/radio media alone as it is less dense than printed information--basically an entire newscast contains about the front page of the NYT as far as content). The NYT is biased, but you a) ignore headlines, b) drill way down to the end of the article and c) look for any information that appears to contradict the main thrust of the article. If you add another source to that same story that does not use AP or the NYT, but perhaps the Daily Mail in the UK, then you get a bit more information. Then look up the original press release from gubmint over the same event, and so on. Then you can tackle social media sources with some idea about what is immediately false, what is possible, and what is likely to fill in the blanks

"Democratic states and their economies depend much more on Washington largesse than Republican states do. This year, New York received roughly $4,900 per capita from the feds and California $4,300—two to three times as much as Florida ($1,700) and Texas ($1,500). That’s because Democratic states provide more generous social welfare. . .

Democratic states also received a disproportionate share of the more than $1 trillion that Congress sent to state and local governments in 2020 and 2021 as pandemic relief. Between 2018 and 2022, federal dollars flowing to state and local governments increased by about $515 billion, more than the rise in Social Security and Medicare combined.

Most Covid funds are running out, though the Biden Federal Emergency Management Agency planned to hand out disaster-relief funds to states and cities for pandemic “emergency” spending through August 2026. This year’s Los Angeles city budget includes $208.2 million in FEMA Covid funds, including for housing vagrants in hotels. New York state’s budget this year includes nearly $3.5 billion. . ."

I'm referring to "MAGA Inc.". Not referring to everyone who voted for Trump. The ones who think EVERYTHING Trump does is flawlessly perfect 18-D chess and how dare anyone question it.
I support Trump's agenda and proudly voted for him 3 times. But he is not our king. And if I disagree with him on something like the shit sandwich continuing resolution, there are a bunch of people who will call me a traitor. Trump pushed for Thune to be Senate leader. Many of us wanted someone less squishy. Some people just reflexively say whatever Trump says or does is right. Fine - that's their right. But questioning him is valid and doesn't make one a traitor.

417 Emmie, the problem is always going to be "who do I trust"

I spent years talking to people (performing collections actually) on the phone, and I got lied to a lot. It taught me to a) not worry so much about the lies, b) set up my life that the lies do not betray me, and c) always check statements against known or suspected facts AND not be so wedded to my own beliefs that I will reject anything that is against what I have learned to date just because I was too busy to learn new stuff.

I would tell people I was teaching to never depend on a single source of information, and if I find multiple sources that say the same thing, try to make sure they are not all linked. One of the ways to check is to see if they say the same thing the same way. Another is if they have the same source for information.
a third is if you have been lied to before.
These are tools to back up your nose for falsehood.

The line of succession in the Senate was done years ago. There was no chance anyone other than Thune was going to get the job no matter what Trump said or did.

What irritates many Trump supporters about the idiotic "cult" slur is that most who use it don't actually understand how things work. Trump was never going to get a MAGA Senator to be the Majority Leader. The play was to try and get him on the team. He "pushed" for Thune only to the extent of trying to get him to not by Mitch 2.0.

433 My opinion, Rubio made peace with never being president. That's not a knock, but I think he'll do the best he can in any other job. DeSantis is still a maybe for the presidency while Vance is highly probable for the presidency, the electorate being fickle. But Trump has created a coalition I think the smart Pubbies see as the way to keep control in the hands of common sense. I guess I'm saying those who now support Trump will want it to continue which means I think we'll see less infighting from the in crowd. And that's good because it's about time we were unified on at least some issues. The Dems are always lock-step. I don't want that but I do want common sense at all times. Period. If that's to be Trump's legacy, then it's a well-earned legacy.

Politics is always the art of the possible and true believers of any policy will always be disappointed by the tradeoffs in a representational government setup.

What is possible and what should be done at any given moment is always arguable. But cultist is a slur and poorly chosen whether it is directed at Trump supporters, DeSantis supporters, heck, even Jeb supporters. I would not even direct it at the Democrat party because I believe them to be a criminal organization, not so much a cult.

Nasty word with nasty implications. And with that, I bow out this evening.

444 Back in my day with the nearby foothills to bike in mid 60's we had the venerable Schwinn Stingray which came along at the same as all terrain motorcycles just before "MOTOCROSS"
and we as kids began to do mods on the bike. Shortened the handlebars, clamped (or welded a solid crossbar if you had a dad with a welder), ditched the banana seat for a 10 speed road bike seat and then the best was the "Knobby" tires that came out but our forks front and back were too narrow so we bent them out to fit the new tires (many a kid in my hood and the inevitable front fork failure at speed.

But yeah!!! My neighborhood went wild on this and even went to the next level when the Classic "On Any Sunday" movie came out. Two of the kids on my street actually went Pro with sponsors and motorcycles supplied.

Got a catheterization, 2 arteries 100% blocked, widowmaker 95% blocked, 4th artery 80% blocked. Time bomb was an understatement. I never had a heart attack, but I was right on verge. I didn't even have symptoms til that one week. No chest pains, no pain in the right arm, no sever shortness of breath. All through the move there was nothing that said ok dude you're in trouble. 491 478 When I was a kid, my mom would solve the problem of my growth (jean leg hems moving up my legs) by sewing a 2 inch wide decorative fabric around the leg bottoms of my jeans.

They didn't come out with "Petite" sizing until I was well out of the growing spurts - I would just roll the cuffs up when I first got the jeans, and then unroll them as needed.

When you are only 5'0" tall (which I didn't hit until my Sophomore year in HS) and everything is made for people 6-7" taller than that, that's a lot of cuffing! Fortunately, I learned how to sew, so I made most of my clothes for a few years.

I had a silent heart attack. Went on around 6 months before it got bad enough to go to a hospital (with what I thought was a bad flu). Around 15% of the heart attacks are silent ones; there are no obvious symptoms. Most heart attacks there's shortness of breath, tingling in the left arm, chest pains. With a silent one, nothing, not until enough damage has been done to the heart to make you notice -- if you're lucky enough to still be alive to notice.

So I won something. Yippee!

Always read your posts, unlike a certain German filmmaker. Anyway, you have been steadfast, I'll give you that. There were times even I had doubts, fearful the legal crap would work. But Trump fought because he had to and had the money to legally fight, an expensive proposition. That we had Kamala as a candidate meant she was close to being president. That's a scary thought, the cheat would have won had we no prepared to fight the cheat.

Trump has a lot on his plate. Election reform is just one more. That states can now purge voter roles of illegals is a huge legal win. But it's a start as to what needs to be done. How many seats did the Dems steal in 2024? They kept counting for weeks. That's bullshit and has to stop. I want one day voting in person, photo ID, finally dipping a thumb into an indelible ink jar. This Congress needs to increase penalties for vote fraud.

They make foreign goods more costly for American consumers. The tariff money, basically a tax, goes to the US gubmint. Trump hopes the other countries will give in when they see their US sales drop. Tariff "wars" were a contributing factor to the Great Depression. Don't worry, though. The biggest factor was the Federal Reserve, run by idiots. And FDR.

Modern heart medicine is amazing.

I know of what Bers speaks, feeling younger. I had an ablation a couple of years ago; I was feeling more sluggish than usual for my condition. I left the hospital after an overnight, walking out down the stairs and jogging to get a bus. Then changed to the subway to get home. The ablation was amazing. And my heart will never get above 50% power as heart damage is permanent. So I have a pacemaker with defib paddles in my chest. 10 times I was out when I was shocked. But that one time I was awake -- whoo, boy! That was not a fun ride.

That and to the extent possible he's looking to incentivize the businesses to move here to avoid the tariffs regardless of what their government does.

I honestly had no clue. The only reason I went to the doctor was to see if they could give me a better antacid than an over the counter. I never even considered it could be a heart attack.

I was lucky, mine was pretty mild.

DOGE says it is now at $1B/day savings for federal spending. I take that means they have reduced the rate of federal spending by $1B/day. That's ~350B per year.

In my neighborhood, AOC's District, Queens part, the sidewalks are sidewalks again, not open air bazaars where illegals throw down blankets and lay out fake goods, like 'POOLO' underwear, all the while blocking pedestrian traffic. I knew there would be mostly beer drinkers, but I figured they would do some shots. The bubba burnt sugar whiskey was 3/4 gone, and very little was missing from the 2 good bottles. I finished the 2 good bottles on my own in the last 2 months. I figured I would hit this burnt sugar weenie shit last thinking it must be ok since they drank most of it. Nope, I was wrong. Yeah, sweetie, "trans have always existed" that's true. Usually, however, they existed as part of circus side shows, vaudeville performances, etc.

In other words: people only saw them when people *wanted* to see them. Not having them stuffed into their faces all the damned time!

Oh, dear. I may need to step off?

She looks better in that lycra than nude. It's really vulgar...and stunning. How does Kayne make money? Surely they don't pay him to parade her around naked?

628 "Not a Lutheran but the church split in two. One part traditional the other liberal. "

As some of you may know, we have very recently begun attending a local Lutheran church.

One of the traditional ones.

The message is pretty clear from the Pulpit.

God loves you.
And there are rules.

So far we enjoy attending.

Plus....big old Pot Luck yesterday after the service.

Apparently Lutherans like to eat.

629 They are reporting that she apparently played for the other team, and left behind a partner.

Perhaps another example of promotion based on criteria other than skill and ability.

And that crap has been proven to kill people, and lose wars.

That whole flight was a clusterfuck. Sounds like another participation trophy seeker wanting the accolades without any real commitment or work. 500 hours in 4-5 years? That don't sound like shit. I think an electrician or plumber needs like 6000 hours in the field ( 3 years of 40 hour weeks), with W2's to prove it, before even being allowed to take a test for their license.

630 625: South of the Virginia border maybe. A golf trip, though none is planned at the moment. Thinking Hilton Head or Charleston/Kiawah Island, at some point in the future. Maybe.

Tamaulipas is on the TX border. Matamoros is the border town opposite Brownsville which is just down the road from Boca Chica (Space City).

Great, just great. The dishwasher isn't getting any water and I'm leaving the house for a week tomorrow morning. When I get back I'll have to try to figure out how to fix the float switch. And my dirty dishes will have a week's worth of gunk hardened onto them.

634 I really would like to play crappy golf at Kiawah Island. It looks lovely.

I might take you up on that offer, VIA.

You might want to rinse them or hand wash them before you go, or they might become science experiments by the time you get back.

I guess that in theory, they could be washed by hand.

Sometimes old ways are not just best ways, but the only way.

Ha! You didn't say freak show or geek. You were, in fact, polite.

638 "I might take you up on that offer, VIA."

Please consider it.

Google Summerville SC, and see how close it is to where you want to be.

Historic Charleston is about 22 miles.

And at least two spare bedrooms.

Ask Doof.

He's been here often enough, he knows the front door lock code.

I posted this analysis yesterday. Lots of potential human error on all sides and at least some of it might not be DEI related but due to circumstances:
