Sefton: sefton at cutjibnewsletter.com | THE MORNING RANT: New Transportation Secretary Issues Order Directing NHTSA to Rescind or Replace Existing Corporate Average Fuel Economy (CAFE) StandardsAs expected, US regulators are moving to roll back fuel economy standards on new vehicles following Trump’s assumption of office. [Duffy’s] first official act was to sign a memorandum directing staff to start the process of resetting Corporate Average Fuel Economy (CAFE) standards. It specifically directs the Office of the General Counsel, the Office of the Undersecretary for Policy, and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) to immediately initiate rulemaking “to rescind or replace all existing CAFE standards.” The rules currently in place require a 2% improvement in fuel economy every year for all passenger cars and light trucks between model years (MY) 2027 and 2031. By MY2031, the final standard would require 50.4mpg.Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy’s Memo dated 01/28/2025 and titled “Fixing the CAFE Program” is at this link. Here are some highlights: I hereby direct NHTSA to commence an immediate review and reconsideration of all existing fuel economy standards applicable to all models of motor vehicles…” And I direct NHTSA to propose the rescission or replacement of any fuel economy standards as determined necessary to bring the CAFE program into compliance with Administration policy and the requirement of the law. These fuel economy standards are set at such aggressive levels that automakers cannot, as a practical matter, satisfy the standards without rapidly shifting production away from internal-combustion engine (ICE) vehicles to alternative electric technologies.Concurrently, there is great news over at the Environmental Protection Agency, where Lee Zeldin has just been confirmed as its new Administrator, a Cabinet level position. The EPA has long since transitioned from being an entity focused on clean air and water into a powerful and punitive force seeking to impose the radical anti-carbon agenda. Things are about to change at the EPA. This will also allow auto manufacturers to focus on actual customer demand rather than making products demanded by climate communists at government regulatory agencies.
The League of Conservation Voters, a national environmental advocacy group, has panned Zeldin’s lifetime environmental record, giving him a 14 percent score. Like all Republicans at the time, he voted against the 2022 Inflation Reduction Act aimed at boosting renewable energy and manufacturing and fighting climate change. With Sean Duffy and Lee Zeldin freeing the auto industry to once again respond to market demand for automobiles, the leaders of General Motors and Ford are now in an interesting situation. General Motors’ CEO Mary Barra has handled her role as little more than an order-taking clerk obediently implementing the instructions given to her by regulators in the Obama/Biden regime. It is doubtful that she has the ability to answer to the marketplace rather than to government handlers. She has a very short window of time to announce that GM is abandoning its promised all-electric future before it becomes clear she cannot run the company. On the other hand, Ford CEO Jim Farley is a true believer in the globalist left’s climate agenda to impose restrictions on consumers’ driving choices. Like Bill Ford, Mr. Farley has made clear his contempt for Ford’s traditional products and its traditional customer base. It is doubtful that Farley can lead a company whose customers want to buy products that he and Bill Ford detest and do not want to sell. The Boards at both Ford and GM likely need to take action quickly to install leadership that can prosper in the impending era of auto manufacturing freedom. CAFE was a typical idiotic commie plot that had the opposite of its intended effect.
Originally designed to push people into smaller and (allegedly) more fuel-efficient cars, what it really did was encourage car manufacturers to push much bigger trucks and SUVs. Then, realizing the devastation left in its wake, the CAFE champions then tried to fix the problems they themselves causes by trying to mandate EVs. Which caused more devastation. They should have left everything alone. If fuel economy and emissions was the true goal (it really wasn't, but let's assume), then imagine how much better modern gas motors would be if the trillions in money pissed down the shitter on EV was instead invested in new motor tech? There's a LOT of promising tech out there that could significantly increase economy and lower emissions in gas motors. But nobody spent the money to develop it, because all the money was wasted on EVs. Posted by: Elric The Blade at February 03, 2025 11:07 AM (iFTx/) 37

While I'd love the death and destruction of the CAFE standard - none of this is going to last until and unless Congress passes a law. None of the auto manufacturers are going to retool their product strategies for what will likely be a 4 year vacation from the CAFE standards. They know, as probably everyone here does as well - that as soon as the Democrats get back into power, they're going to come in and re-implement the CAFE standards and make them even more onerous and destructive as they are now. Which is why I'm starting to get nervous about all of the wonderful chaos that DJT is invoking. I just know that the bill will be due when the Democrats retake power. They will be even more ruthless and punitive and petty next time they get the levers of power. USAID also frequently launders money through front organizations. USAID did not give money directly to Kristol, it gave money to a branch of the Rockefeller Brothers Fund, which then gave the money to Kristol. Same trick that public radio uses when they claim that they don't really get money from the Federal government, because the money is laundered through the Corporation For Public Broadcasting. I just got an email from Cosmopolitan in Telluride. It's a restaurant. I skied in Telluride so I must be on an email list. The email reads:
"Today, Cosmo will remain closed as we stand in solidarity with the hardworking immigrants who are the backbone of our industry, our town, and our nation." LOLGF. Someone alert Tom "Hulk" Homan. I think I've got a line on a company intentionally using illegal labor. It's called Cosmopolitan in Telluride. I interpret that as Tom Homan *already* got their illegals. Donald J. Trump @realDonaldTrump I just spoke with President Claudia Sheinbaum of Mexico. It was a very friendly conversation wherein she agreed to immediately supply 10,000 Mexican Soldiers on the Border separating Mexico and the United States. These soldiers will be specifically designated to stop the flow of fentanyl, and illegal migrants into our Country. We further agreed to immediately pause the anticipated tariffs for a one month period during which we will have negotiations headed by Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Secretary of Treasury Scott Bessent, and Secretary of Commerce Howard Lutnick, and high-level Representatives of Mexico. I look forward to participating in those negotiations, with President Sheinbaum, as we attempt to achieve a “deal” between our two Countries. Because the Deep State controlled all the information. The Left is screaming that Musk's geniuses are stealing everyone's social security numbers by taking over the Treasury disbursement unit, but what they are really doing is seeing where Treasury money actually goes. Normally the idea that people move to a state and "turn it blue" is false.

It's not just that the CAFE regs that f**k us, the US auto manufacturers jack up prices on US vehicles to basically subsidize the rest of the world and UAW.
You can get a Ford Ranger 4x4 with a 6'-1/2 foot bed, diesel engine and tow package for $35k US. You can't touch anything in the US for that price. Another fun fact, there is no separate destination charge on cars sold in Australia, so the price you see on the website is the total charge for the vehicle, minus tax and whatever nonsense Australian auto dealers add on. Which is why I'm starting to get nervous about all of the wonderful chaos that DJT is invoking. I just know that the bill will be due when the Democrats retake power. They will be even more ruthless and punitive and petty next time they get the levers of power. This is why I wish congress would actually get off their asses and do something to enshrine energy security and affordability into law that cannot be ignored by the next administration (which will likely be democrat).

Not "just" the Democrats and not "just" USAID.
It's starting to dawn on people that literally every NGO and grant the Feds have been pushing out the door, for decades, has been a huge source of the grift every member of Congress gets. Get on a board of directors of one of the entities that gets grant monies, or a NGO and voilà, you're getting a check every month that hardly anyone knows about. That these politicos try to hand wave it all away as some sort of non-paying, charitable contribution to the betterment of mankind is total horseshit.
