The Ace of Spades Pet Thread

*****

Good afternoon and welcome to the almost world famous Ace of Spades Pet Thread. I cut my teeth with this thread going on 9 years ago. It was handed off to KT who gladly took it on. Unfortunately KT is ill and won't be your Cob today. You get stuck with me.

Just one simple rule. Leave all politics and current events out at the front curb. Don't even think about bringing them to the front porch. Thank you.

Funny how KT has been running the Pet Thread for quite some time and yet I receive emails from our readers about their pets.

This week has been no different.

Let's see what is in the old mail bag.

FB_IMG_1738377609576.jpg
Attached is a picture of Daphne, the Maltese that came into our home from a rescue organization after an unknown number of years on the mean streets of NYC. She has had health problems since before we had her, and this past week came down with sepsis. My wife had her put down today. Beautiful little dog who will be missed.

I hope there is room for her in an upcoming Pet Thread (she's a Maltese, thus tiny; she doesn't need much space.)

Thank you,
tankdemon

Losing a pet hurts badly! So sorry for your loss.

Thanks for stopping by today. The Pet Thread and its support staff, sponsors, advertisers and local bookie appreciates your time this afternoon.

If you have something pet and/or animal related, please contact KT at ktinthegarden at the gmail thingy dot com.

Hopefully KT will be back next week with a spring in her step and and whistling happy tunes.
Have a great week!

Always sad when I see a cute pet, like Daphne, then read that it has passed.

10 Here, I'll note that MisHum is out of practice and forgot to close the centering tag, so it will already have been fixed and my comment will look stupid. 😁

After many weeks of sleeping on the couch, or on the bed in the second bedroom, we've managed to coax her into sleeping on her proper bed in our bedroom.

With the door closed to keep her in. After the other night when she decided to bark bark bark at the front door in the middle of the night.

45 Took our "part-time" cat Bean (she's Bravo and Charlie's mama, an alley cat but she hangs out in our basement when the weather's cold) to the vet after noticing a big patch of fur gone from her hind leg. After examining her, the vet concluded she was overgrooming and after eliminating fleas and food allergies as a cause, determined it to be "stress." Which I think may actually be boredom from being stuck inside due to the extremely cold weather the last two weeks. Anyway, she prescribed Feliway and Purina Calm Care supplements, and moving on to CBD if those don't bring about improvement.

A friend of mine had a Himalayan, who was a gorgeous kittuh. Died a few year ago. I'd visit once a year and kittuh would remember me and run into my lap and start purring, chirping, meowing, and making all kinds of happy kittuh noises. I suspect he was telling me about those annoying German Shepards my friend had. Beautiful and friendly kittuh.

53 Precious the Bichon has a new interest in fine dining: Kraft Singes American cheese. (Mrs. JTB likes them for grilled cheese sammies.) Precious got a taste and her eyes lit up. Now every time we come from the kitchen she looks at us like "Where's the cheese?" And she ain't subtle about it. She gets a special canned food which she likes and keeps her healthy but that cheese slice is a big freaking deal.

I suspect she now thinks of the kitchen as 'the cheese room'.

I love the way they look; one of the few shorthaired breeds that really appeals to me. But it's been said that the banshees take wailing lessons from Siamese cats in heat.

I knew one Siamese as a boy. The cat, Martini, would visit from the shop in front of our place. My brother was very small, and wanted to play with her -- not roughly, but Martini was suspicious. She knew that he was not allowed on the stairs to our loft by himself. She'd run part way up there and settle down to watch my brother toddle over, but he wouldn't go up, and she wouldn't come down until Mom led him away. Right smart, that cat.

Posted by: Piper

O.k. We need someone with cats named Soy and Sushi.

Posted by: FenelonSpoke at February 01, 2025 04:29 PM (W7GAF)

79 Another point on Siamese: They've been bred now to look like anorexic fashion models, which I dislike. There are breeders who specialize, their ads say, in "traditional" Siamese, "Siamese the way they used to look," with normal bodies, heads, and ears in proportion, instead of these attenuated alien cats. If I ever adopted a purebred Siamese, I'd go with one of those.

The points, the markings, can be had in other breeds like Ragdolls and Birmans, longhairs, as well as Himalayans. So you can have your Siamese look on a longhaired cat too. Siberians don't have the seal point or chocolate point markings, yet, but they do have the tabby point markings. Linda's late Angelique was one: a "Neva Masquerade," they are called, a special color set within Siberians.

The cats.... they are.... intrigued. 🙀

87 Wasabi is a good name for a spicy cat and it was good of you both to rescue them.

I named his tuxedo cat sister "Aurora." She was even spicier. My fingers were all bitten and bloodied after we took her from the car wash. But she grew into a pretty girl too.

88 O.k. We need someone with cats named Soy and Sushi.

I am calling our latest transient backyard stray cat "Shinobu."

89 63 CaliGirl, how is your pup doing?
Posted by: Ben Had at February 01, 2025 04:08 PM (mB6WH)

She's doing so well. She's the friendliest dog I've ever had. She's a complete joy. She's on hawk patrol. She thinks she keeps the yard free of hawks and vultures. The red tail hawk is almost teasing her, it keeps circling over the grass where the dog is.

She's small but fierce.

91 We are trying pretty litter for the first time. The packaging is great. I admit I’m a sucker for nice packaging on products. Has anyone else tried it?

92 We tried Pretty Litter, and thought it was OK, but not worth the 2x our normal litter cost.

95 Daphne may be small but she occupies big space in our hearts today. Rescue is hard.

Hrothgar's relative is a fine gentleman who obviously loves his dogs. We don't know the name, so let's call this pic: Terrier, focused on rat.

97 84 So many pair names to be had.

when I got my two at the same time, a male and female, I considered Bonnie and Clyde (mostly because I like saying Clyde) , Fred and Ginger, Archer and Lana.

I settled on Bogie and Bacall.

One of the pair of cats I grew up we named R2 and D2. My parents had some friends who live in a lighthouse on one of the Great Lakes. They named there cats Fleabag and Fishbreath.

98 I almost lost Stirling just now!

I'd stepped outside to tap out my pipe on the rubber lawn sprinkler outside my door. Probably I left the screen door open. Suddenly I heard a cat crying outside, and went to look. There was a solid black cat with, I thought, a bushier tail than Stirling's. We have ferals in the area, but this one did not seem feral, and kept meowing. At last I realized, *that was Stirling*! He'd slid out, and wanted to come back in "naowww!" I let him back in and gave him some kitty treats and petting.

I'm surprised at myself, that I didn't recognize my own cat at first. But I'm flattered too that he did not leave the doorway and wanted to get back in as soon as possible.

103 Pairs of cats . . . When I rescued the obviously-purebred cat who would be known as Angelique, I still had litle black-and-white longhair Oreo. If I had kept the rescue myself instead of giving her to Linda, I was going to name her Cameo -- after the vanilla sandwich cookie Nabisco used to sell.

Aside from that, I've never been tempted to give obvious pair-names to cats. When I had Chekov and adopted Wolf, I was not tempted to name the second cat Gogol (ugh) or Tolstoy!

105 So my wife runs a boarding service for greyhounds. We just found out this morning that instead of one of our guests going home today, they're picking him up tomorrow. And she's getting people asking her for reservations as far ahead as May.

She likes her home business.

I have had a couple Himalayans-ish. My first was in the great dumping of 2008 and she was a bicolor Himmy. (think tuxedo + Siamese coloring). She wasn't super loud like Siamese. She loved making biscuits on you if you lay down, i had to have towels about for armor.

Persians are themselves being redefined to be super flat nozed to the point of health issues which you can reduce by going to breeds and colors that use the older Persian body style to build on. So they top out about 10 pounds for males. They are pretty quiet as well. So my new senior male cat spends a lot of time at the fringe of group watching the doors, escoring me downstairs if I go there.

His name is Marshal Davout, Napoleon's best Marshal
