Daily Tech News 1 February 2025

Top Story

  • The Minimal Phone is a minimal phone. (Liliputing)

Well, technically it's a minimal smartphone. It runs Android 14 and has an 800x600 display and supports 4G - though not 5G. And it has a camera - optionally two - and USB-C.

And a physical keyboard and a genuine headphone jack and a microSD slot, all of which are becoming less common. And the screen is a relatively tiny 4.25".

Also less common is the use of an e-ink display, which gives much better battery life but is not great for watching videos or checking your photos, since it's black and white. The video review attached to that article suggests it's not the most responsive device ever created either, likely directly tied to the slow e-ink display.

Price is $399 despite the lower-end specs, presumably because phones that aren't bloated and annoying don't sell.

Ahh, but the unpicked blueberries that's... that's where I had them. They laughed at me and made jokes but I proved beyond the shadow of a doubt and with... geometric logic... that their duplicitous plan to have blueberry picking grind to a halt DID exist, and I'd have exposed that plan if they hadn't of begun expelling our little brown workers prematurely. I, I, I know now they were only trying to deprive us of low wage earners who'd vote for me and mine because we'd sustain them in their enclaves with table scraps...

38 is there anyway to get rid of stories that Apple/ Microsoft Bing feels I might be interested in based on what I type.

Short Answer: No.

On the MSN homepage, clicking the gear icon then Page settings menu you can select "Content off".

Unfortunately, every "story" that gets pushed to you is click-bait a/o straight-up propaganda. Many are advertisements and pre-suasion articles wrapped up as "news". Many generated and more in the future likely generated by AI. MSN is still a Communist news organization. Dittos with Apple, their content directors and engineers are hard core Progressives and Marxists and you will forever get the enemy's Tokyo Rose "entertainment".

It is also 100% true that your content is based on algorithms that study your cookies, browser history, and whatever background app is recording and sending what it hears over your device's microphone for content/sentiment analysis.

42 And the other tech question is that my screen seems to be jumping all over the place.

When the co-bloggers drop images or other foreign content elements into an article and fail to clue the browser to the dimensions of the element, the browser will dynamically keep shifting the page as new elements are coming in asynchronously and in parallel.

The fix is that the co-bloggers need to give the browser clues so that when it is rendering the page, the placeholder for the incoming design element will fit in without forcing a re-arrangement.

That, or you can buy a faster computer and faster download speed and move closer (in terms of network hops) to the CDN where the elements are hosted.

Howdy, C.,

Ive dealt with that a lot in the last couple of years. A dose of melatonin helps me get to sleep, but not stay there more than five hours. I've been taking a Unisom, or half a tablet, the OTC sleep aid that does not have diphenhydramine. You could try that. Or valerian root.

I was thinking that they would make superior trail cameras to what is being offered now.

As it is the state of the art in cellular deer cams is a grainy picture and hope no one steals the SD card.

OTOH, the Samsung A15, while it has a crappy batter life compared to the trail cam, can be coupled to an external power pack, has a superior camera, can stream video, and has a fairly good water resistance rating for bungy-tying to a tree.

I'm looking forward to that! During the Snow Surprise two weeks ago, I napped about ninety minutes each afternoon and slept six hours at night.

The Unisom has doxylamine succinate, which does not send me to the head every two hours like diphenhydramine does. The name brand is not cheap at Walmart -- but they have their own brand for much less.

69 House Bill 5164 would remove restrictions on illegal immigrants wishing to change their names. It passed both houses of Illinois Congress earlier this month and was sent to Pritzker’s desk last week.

The legislation would also protect criminal offenders and ensure that “filing fees for a petition for change name may not exceed $25.” it would also allow the court to waive the filing fee "for good cause shown."

Dems do love their criminals.

70 The pages jumping up & down while loading here on AoSHQ are mainly due to X embeds.

It’s gotten worse since Elon took over Twitter and clamped down on excessive bandwidth to save money.

It’s takes awhile for X posts to load and that causes the pages to jump every time the embedded tweet(s) loads in.

I’ve noticed that it takes a few minutes to completely download everything if Ace embeds several tweets in a post, especially if X is being particularly slow on certain days.

And my computers/tablets and internet connection speeds aren’t slow. This is all on X, mostly.

It’s particularly painful trying to load up AoSHQ homepage on an iPhone over a 4G connection for some reason as I’ve tried it several times and it’s almost like being back in the dial-up internet days.

73 I'm downsizing. Lots of decluttering. My present focus is digitizing boxes and envelopes of photos, instead of just packing them into another box and deferring the exercise into the future.

My three in one printer will scan them so that's an option, especially set to a high resolution for facial images. But it's a little time consuming. The result is a PDF.

Option two is photographing a photograph with my phone's camera. I think that may be faster and the result is a JPG file which provides a nice thumbnail and not just the Adobe icon in the folder.
Will do some experiments today to help me decide which approach to take.

The Global Warming Climate Change (tm) proponents always cite temperature in Celsius. They do this for several reasons: an increase from 20 deg.C to 21 deg. C becomes "ZOMG!!! We're gonna die!!! reee!!!", and 0 deg. C is not a true zero, so it allows them to exaggerate change.

Global temperature, since it is an astronomical phenomena, should be expressed in Kelvin. Kelven has an absolute zero. We'd see global temperature of the Earth bouncing around 297 K +/- a bit. Suddenly it's not so scary.

Unfortunately, every "story" that gets pushed to you is click-bait a/o straight-up propaganda. Many are advertisements and pre-suasion articles wrapped up as "news".

88 The Global Warming Climate Change ™ proponents always cite temperature in Celsius. They do this for several reasons: an increase from 20 deg.C to 21 deg. C becomes "ZOMG!!! We're gonna die!!! reee!!!", and 0 deg. C is not a true zero, so it allows them to exaggerate change.

They use 'C' because Metric System and the Climate Change™ Hoax is international.

The variation of temperature over the next century, they allege, is the same variation that the thermostat in your home has for when it cycles the HVAC.

What would be both a great public service, and a way to generate advert revenue for AoS, is that JJ's most recent Morning Report has a persistent link suitable for replacing the default home page for anyone's browser.

Second Phase would be to use AI/Tensor or some image generating AI to produce corresponding images to the headline (or at least use the first paragraph) then post the MR into a grid fashion. Instant MSN replacement and one doesn't need to be a Moron or regular AoS lurker to benefit from JJ's clipping service.

93 For such a huge fireball I don't see a lot of burn damage. Either a lot of debris has already been removed or the plane may have simply vaporized. It looked as if impact was at speed.

Aircraft have a lot of void-space and are manufactured of relatively light-weight materials. The engines tend to be the heaviest components. Thus I'd expect impact damage surrounding the wreckage to be confined within a relatively small area.

I've heard that some witnesses saw what appeared to be a fireball while the aircraft was climbing after takeoff. I wonder if one of the engines experienced an Uncontained High Energy Release, and thrown turbine blades hit the onboard patient oxygen system.

97 I just regard those click-bait "articles" as clues from the Deep State, and I can then safely assume it's a lie and believe the opposite case is true.

The art of what they are doing is "presuasion", that is, they implant a thought or desire subconsciously. (I don't think that they actually believe sentient beings click on the bait)

Enough people around you also see this same dreck, the images + teaser headline, and next thing you know, you bring up a topic, totally out of context of browsing, and think its your idea and then next time you see the landing page campaign, you think that they read your mind - they didn't - they implanted your mind earlier.

Still, the default is to run your history through a filter and auction your eyes to the highest bidder who want you to see their placement ad/article.

Go to autotrader and then a Genesis website, don't clear your cookie cache and you will be pummeled with SUV click bait and "Dont buy this" or "Top 10 SUVs".

I disagree, the hoaxers use Celsius because it allows them to exaggerate the delta-temperature.

The delta-T from 20 deg. C to 21 deg. C is the same as seen in going from 293.15 K to 294.15 K.

100 Intel said the chips were delayed because the market "had not materialised", which is a curious statement since these are the first such chips Intel has produced.

AMD meanwhile is selling all the server CPUs it can make and has another year of runway to devour the market.

Intel is actually correct here. Sales of high-end server chips are through the roof because of AI. Sales of lower-end server chips (which would include all-E-core ones) have fallen off a cliff because the big players reallocated their budgets to AI.

Chutzpah.

A very crude description of Mimetic Theory claims that the vast majority of people don't know what they desire, but those desires are implanted by influencers.

So people stand around and live their lives, this epic disaster comes along and psychopath opportunists instantly make the unsubstantiated claim that Government, particularly them, are best suited to deal with this epic disaster. The Presuasion is the propaganda that government must be involved. This is followed up by a propaganda campaign to assume that government control is already accepted and now its only a function of selecting the Blue Ribbon Committee to follow through.

This disaster has been engineered, for years, if not decades ago to happen and that the steps you are seeing have been long ago agreed. We are witnessing them fine tuning the grift and the vectors on how the hundreds of billions of dollars will be stolen.

What caused the Dali cargo ship to crash into the Francis Scott Key Bridge almost a year ago? Who was the captain of that ship? Why were security bollards not in place on Bourbon Street when a terrorist attacked New Orleans on New Year's Day? What was the ISIS-inspired jihadist who carried out that attack doing in Egypt and Canada in the summer of 2023? And why did a gunman shoot and attempt to assassinate Donald Trump last July in Butler, Pennsylvania?

Temperature scales are a bit weird. Fahrenheit is practical for day-to-day life. Celsius is practical because it makes mathematical calculations easier. Kelvin is used for comparisons of astronomical bodies and phenomena (Absolute Zero = 0 K = -293.15C).

The thermal energy required to change the temperature of an object of a given material/mass is the same to go from:

20 deg. C to 21 deg. C
68 deg. F to 69.8 deg. F
293.15 K to 294.15 K

Again, which temperature scale allows the most dramatic-appearing delta-T? All three scales are reading the same radiated heat.

137 The pages jumping up & down while loading here on AoSHQ are mainly due to X embeds.

The mass of people think they know temperature. I agree that Celsius sounds "sciency" but that's because it's commonly used to make the maths easier. Kelvin is "sciency" too, but the hoaxers don't use that scale.

People now choose LED bulbs based on whether they are 2700 K (warm yellowish) or 5000 K ("daylight"). Kelvin never used to be encountered in day-to-day life.

The climate hoaxers will never use Kelvin because the change in temperature is not as frightening; even though it expresses the same heat.

Windows 10

So... I don't have Win 10 but on my latest version of Bing I have turned off most of the "personalized" feeds.

My version of Bing is 132 (upper right hand corner 3 dots) right click and choose "about Bing." That will give you your version. Most of what follows should work on your version too...

Find the settings icon, usually a gear like icon. Any option that says "sidebar" or "privacy, search or services" should have an option to turn features on, or off. If you find something in the settings called "Feed Layout" or "Feed Control" that will also have options to turn off various streams of stuff.

Hope that gives you a bit of a starting point.

Nothing you turn off or on there will crash or kill Windows or Bing.

The problem is much bigger than you think. I quiz my students regularly. Mostly slow reviews of older material, without advancing.

We need a new system. Demonstrate mastery, and you move up in subject matter. Put teachers that do not improve their students out of work. Reply on AI-game tech to teach. There was a promising experiment in Kenya about that.

Yes it is.

20 deg C to 21 deg. C == 293.15 K to 294.15 K

Using degrees Celsius, we see a 5% increase in temperature.

Using Kelvin, we see a 0.35% increase in temperature.

The two scales are measuring the same radiated heat. Which change looks more frighteng?

I agree.

"Unknown Drip Under Pressure" is either missing my point, or (I suspect) being deliberately obtuse and contrarian. I have given repeated examples that show using degrees Celsius permits expressing changes in temperature that appear to be more frightening than expressing temperature in Kelvin.

But you're measuring the same thing. Which object is longer? The object that is 1 inch long? Or, the object that is 25.4mm long? (Spoiler: they're the same length)

Well got to go run errands.

190 All that goes away tomorrow and our economy will collapse within a month. Which is why some of our political betters are so keen on bringing back manufacturing to the US. They realize the risk.

I'm intrigued by the instant desire to generate massive quantities of electrical power Right Now. Pretty much most conversation is in terms of thermal power generators.

Being that AI is this generation's Pet Rock, these data centers that are allegedly relying on NVidia chips may end up just being huge data stores for human telemetry.

So what about all that extra energy? Manufacturing uses far more than what the US can generate Right Now. If the former US wants to restore independence from a failed or warring China, we are going to need at least 10x of what we can generate and distribute.

Which sucks because we don't make grid components here in the US at scale but rely heavily on China.

Trump's encouraging them to waste and lose their political power in the arena of ideas.
